As we emerge from lock down, everyone is doing their bit to keep things 'normal' with a positive mental attitude. All things considered, as a human race we are emerging stronger together albeit apart! At a micro-level we just so grateful to have completed our first quarter as a Startup business which launched albeit at the peak of the global crisis.

At macro level, from sports such as the FA Cup Finals where Emeli Sandé took us to Church with the epic hair raising English traditional hymn Abide With Me . The global stage where politicians and Philanthropists are doing more to make life easier for folks everywhere. It been so uplifting to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Let’s Explore with an attitude of gratitude the good, bad and ugly.

In this issue; we illuminate The Spotlight on the NGO ‘spotted’ is Sadie Sharpe who is doing an amazing job to help the Youth find and gain employability skills in The Platform Project, for which she has won numerous accords. THOUGHT LEADERSHIP 101: KEYNOTE SPEAKING WRITTEN BY CERI-JANE HACKLING

There are a variety of ways to enhance your reputation as a Thought Leader. As we’ve already discussed, editorial coverage in the media to target your key audience is a great way to demonstrate your experience and expertise, however another effective way to reach your audience is by embarking on public speaking engagements.

Taking advantage of public speaking opportunities is a very effective way to raise your profile and to position yourself an expert in your field.

Public speaking also allows you to engage with your audience in a way that you can’t necessarily through other mediums. For example, when your audience sees you speaking at an event, they start to feel like they know you which engenders trust. Your body language also helps to engage with them... Contd on next page

An audience can tell when a speaker is passionate about their subject and the body language you use communicates this. Without even realising it, when you care about your topic and are keen to help your audience to understand it, it comes across in the way in which you communicate. How you use your hands, your intonation, your manner and your enthusiasm tells your audience that you know and care about your subject and that they’re in safe hands.

Speaking live also allows interaction between you and your audience which you can’t get through other mediums. During lock-down I’ve done various presentations and webinars on Zoom which has been a solution to the immediate problem, but there’s nothing like standing in front of a group of people and getting that instant feedback.

When you’re speaking directly to an audience, you know if they’re finding you interesting or entertaining and you can feed off their reactions to alter your approach. For example, if they’re a serious audience, it’s worth toning things down a bit but if they’re interacting with you, you can afford to ad lib a little more.

As I explained in last issue's column, many people avoid undertaking PR because they don’t recognise themselves as an expert and are nervous about putting themselves front and centre but keep in mind that if people have turned up to see you speak, it’s because they don’t understand the topic or need to know more.

It can be daunting to speak in front of an audience so if you’re nervous about it, start small. There are plenty of networking groups which are looking for speakers to educate members about specific topics so contact them and find out whether they might be interested in hosting you.

Public speaking is a great way to enhance your reputation as a thought leader so it’s well worth looking into and there are plenty of resources to help you feel more comfortable speaking, from presentation coaches to speaking groups, and the more you practise, the better you’ll get.

One thing that I find helpful both as a speaker and an audience member, is a Q&A session at the end of a presentation. This is valuable for a number of reasons. Firstly, from a research perspective, it helps you to identify the questions people still have so you can include them in your next presentation if you feel they’re relevant.

It can also lead to discussions that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

When someone asks a question, it can often lead you to use examples which people can relate to and see how an approach can work in real life. Seeing you explain how a specific approach has worked for you, or how you dealt with a certain situation can really resonate with an audience.

There are hundreds of opportunities with conferences and exhibitions which are looking for people with expertise in certain areas so look at your target audience and see where you might find them and approach the events which might be interested in hosting you for workshops or speaking engagements.

Keynote speaking also offers other opportunities for PR exposure.

Use your social media channels to tell your audience where you’ll be speaking next, ask them to submit questions that they’d like answered, even if they won’t be there. If possible, get someone to film the presentation so that you can use clips and images on social media which will demonstrate to people that you are an experienced public speaker and are available for other speaking opportunities. The more you publicise them, the more opportunities you have to reach your target audience and potentially, encourage them to attend your events.

“Do you really think I’m ready?” I asked my squad leader.

Sergeant Brown was an amazing powerhouse of a Soldier.

I was always envious of how she led the pack during our physical training. Not to mention, she had done some cool intelligence work at her previous duty station before deploying with me to Afghanistan. “Andrews, you’re going to blow it out of the water. I’ll practice with you so you smoke that board.

Those First Sergeants won’t know what hit them.” In order to get promoted from E-4, a lower enlisted rank, to the first Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) rank of E-5, I needed to sit before a board made up of First Sergeants (E-8). They would ask me a series of questions in a variety of topics: weapons, security, physical training, leadership, and more.

If they gave me the green light, then I would be promoted.

She had confidence in me when I didn’t. When I went for Staff Sergeant (E-6), I knew I could do it. At that point, I had developed almost an overconfidence in my abilities. I felt like I could handle anything.

All of that disappeared when I became an entrepreneur. As I looked around online for freelance writing opportunities, I avoided any opportunities I wasn’t already 100% qualified for. Turns out I’m not alone. An internal report at Hewlett Packard showed that women wouldn’t apply for a promotion or job unless they were 100% qualified for it.

Men pulled the trigger at 60% [2].

Talk about a confidence gap. I was brand new to the marketing industry. I didn’t have any industry experience at all, so I avoided any jobs I wasn’t absolutely positive I could do. I held myself back by not believing in me.

That means they were more confident in their ability to succeed. The research, published in 2013, showed that men focused more on the possibility of success, while women focused on the potential for failure.

So for every job that I passed on, there was a man willing to at least shoot his shot. This inclination is introduced to children at an early age, at least in the United States. Boys are taught to “keep their eyes on the prize” while girls have to be careful and “play it safe.”

It was true that I didn’t have industry experience. But I confused that with not having any experience at all. I had been a Soldier for crying out loud. I deployed to a combat zone for 12 months and influenced battleground decisions with my analysis work. I did 6 fitness competitions and 2 half marathons that took months to physically and mentally prepare for. I managed training and logistics for over 200 Soldiers, and I was good at it!

Then I became a mother and homesteader on top of it. I have heaps of great experience that applied to the business world I had decided to venture into. Once I claimed that, my business grew and opportunities flowed abundantly.

As women, we often point to the outside world that won’t give us opportunities. We say “You don’t think we’re good enough.” And that’s true. At large, the world shows us over and over that it believes we aren’t as strong, competent, or intelligent.

Men overestimate their abilities while women underestimate themselves. In another study published in the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, men demonstrated more confidence in their entrepreneurial self-efficacy [1].

You better get a pathological attitude towards controlling your cash flow...or else..

Poor beginnings do not mean you have to live a poor life.

It’s your life and you choose. That pretty much sums up Christine’s philosophy on life. After leaving school with a few O’levels, she worked in a local bank for a few years and realised that her horizons needed to be expanded before she started to settle for a lesser life. She joined the Royal Navy and was quickly fulfilling her lust for adventure as well as a sense of duty.

Christine learned from her mentors that if you let others put limits on you, you will always be leading a lesser life. Her mentors impacted her life so much that she is now committed to paying it forward as an Accredited Business Mentor herself. By her own admission, she has stood on the shoulders of giants, yet each of her extraordinary mentors has been outwardly very ordinary.

After years of experience she is an expert in starting, growing and selling businesses and with such a track record of success she has earned the respect of her peers.

In 2019 she co-founded Succession Plus UK after seeing too many business owners leaving their businesses in a way that left them less than satisfied.

“More than 35% of business owners discover after they’ve sold their business that they’re living poorer lives than they should be, due to rushing their exit strategy,” Christine explains. “Fact is, 80% of business owners rely on their business for their retirement income, but they spend far more time and effort preparing their house for sale than they do preparing their business for sale. The result is a very bad exit that doesn’t give the business owner all that they should have.”

This is a natural step for Christine to take, having founded, built and advised in multiple other successful businesses.

“One client was millions of pounds in debt, but I got them on track and instilled in the team a pathological attitude towards knowing the numbers and controlling cash flow. Around 18 months later, the company was ideally placed when the owner wanted to sell for an eight-figure exit.”

These are typical of the many success stories that Christine can tell at the drop of a hat. After years of hearing “you should write a book”, she finally did and has now written five business books. “Getting started and believing in yourself are the two essential components – the 3rd is sticking with it” she says. Her favourite quote on tenacity is Madonna, who said “The most controversial thing I did was stick around” With Succession Plus, Christine is working with founder-led businesses and focusing on growth and exit planning. It’s a process that takes time. It’s a step-by-step process that can’t be rushed and needs to be started sooner rather than later. Trying to put in place something when you’re 55 that should have begun 10 or 15 years previously might be achievable, but it’s not advisable. It’s the 30 second advert instead of the 120 second version.

Have an open dialogue Communicate your values. Have a two-way conversation about when you will all be working and available, based on your other responsibilities. Build a framework that works for you all during this unusual time.

Build a best-in-class network Covid-19 has created a world in which it doesn’t matter where people are located. Temporarily, everyone is stuck where they landed. The talent pool is now infinite, and you can now (also post-pandemic) choose the best people for your business. We believe we are successful because we allowed our team to work flexibly from day one which meant we weren’t limited to the best people in London.

Embrace technology There is technology to support every area of business operation.

We use Google Meet, Lifesize (our client) or Zoom for video calls, Slack to collaborate with our virtual teams, Dropbox and Google for doc sharing. We also use software for e-contract signing, Receipt Bank for documenting receipts and Xero for accounts. Technology can propel your business forward.

Respect your time Just because you’re not going back and forth to an office doesn’t mean you should spend all your time ‘at work’. Be protective of your time, say no to unnecessary virtual meetings and establish a workday that suits your natural rhythm and work ethic. Don’t burn yourself out.

Here are 5 top tips for successful virtual working adapted for the pandemic

I’ve run a business for 15 years and I’ve never worked in the same place as my colleagues for more than a day! We all WFH or from co-working spaces, meeting regularly in London.

In between, we’re catching up on video calls to discuss agency business and plan campaigns. In 2005 my business partner Georgina Blizzard and I came up with the idea of a new model of PR agency which would be resourced not by the people we could afford to hire - which would stunt growth - but on expert freelancers who we would bring in to support each client brief. We wouldn’t need an office, because the freelance network we were already building would stretch way beyond London. Instead, we’d invest in solid tech platforms to support campaigns and underpin business operations. 15 years ago this was a radical idea and we faced plenty of scepticism.

We were lucky to kick off our business life by supporting Sony with the launch of its Bravia TV range. Later, we built a regional network of PR experts to launch the Apple stores around the UK. More recently, we’ve helped Vodadone with its 5G launch and launched EVs (electric cars) for Zipcar. In 2019 we ran projects in over 40 countries and turned over £3.2m.We are now no longer an outlier but a forerunner of an accepted mode of working.

Spotlight Q: Why did you write it?

DB Answers: I remember the first time a reporter hung up on me. I was at my first internship and his angry tone and the click on the other end of the line bruised my ego. I thought to myself … is this normal?

Are reporters all angry and what did I do. It was early on in my internship and I didn’t feel comfortable asking anyone or sharing the rejection I had encountered.

DB Answers: My hope for future generations of students and pros is that they ask as many questions as possible and share their answers too. When you have Q&A and open dialogue, it’s a chance to learn on both sides. Reverse mentoring is a way for professionals of all ages and experience can learn together.

There are questions asked by every generation of PR and marketing professionals. It’s a new age, new channels, new technologies, but some questions are timeless. I began mentoring to help students and professionals navigate these questions. But, mentoring in the 1990s into 2000 was one-on-one and usually in person or by phone. Today, mentoring is around every corner of the social media landscape.

There is mentoring on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and more.

That’s why I wrote my book, Answers for Modern Communicators. When the questions started to pour into my email inbox, and even more so through my social media channels, I knew that every communication professional had a question. There were so many changes going on, in PR, marketing, and social media. I started to answer everyone and it became a daily practice. Stepping back the questions and my answers started to fall into categories or buckets.

There were so many about building relationships and media relations, reputation management, branding ad social media, content marketing, measurement and yes, there were even questions on mentoring.

These buckets of questions formed the chapters in my book.

Learning through someone else's experience is a great way to look at your own situation and take what applies.

You can then challenge yourself to add to an answer. In my book, there are questions in the form of challenges and the answers didn’t always show the right steps.

That’s right … it’s through missteps that you learn and don’t make the same mistake twice. For example, don’t lie for anyone … yes, I can check that box. Speak truth to power and always be forthright with information, or it will come back to “bite” you later.

Having a resource with Q&A is a way to check your own boxes and to also expand on the answers. Answers for Modern Communicators is a discussion starter or the what would you do and what have you learned in your experience. The more professionals can come together to share, the more we all learn.

By Tim Nash Review of Waco (Miniseries: 2018 - ALIBI / On Demand) Michael Shannon & Taylor Kitsch There are some geographical names that instantly draw to mind an event that overshadows the very place itself. Lockerbie, Oklahoma and most recently Wuhan City. Think of these places and you remember their sad relevance. The same can be said for Waco, Texas, since 1993 instantly labelled by the events which unfolded as the FBI clashed with the Branch Davidian lead by the now infamous David Koresh.

Described by some as a religious sect, Koresh was on the FBI's watch list as a potential threat but through a series of events which still to this day remain rather hazy in detail, what should have been a simple arrest rapidly descended into a full blown siege that would last 51 days before a tragic and violent finale.

This miniseries is careful to depict both sides with a degree of sympathy while never really pointing any fingers of blame. Shannon is excellent as the somewhat put upon but ultimately peaceful family man who just happens to work for the FBI. Kitsch is everything one imagines Koresh must have been, slightly charismatic and yet oddly creepy at the same time.

Over six episodes the tension is carefully choreographed, and viewing becomes compelling.

For those of us who know the outcome, it's a long hard holding of breath to see how we get there but one thing is for sure, whoever was ultimately to blame, the human cost was unacceptable and, arguably avoidable.

We spotted The Platform Project on Facebook! The project was founded by Sadie Shape, in Swindon, UK. She tells her story below.

I founded The Platform Project as a social enterprise 3 years ago because I believed that there was a gap in the market to help young people develop the entrepreneurial skills they need to thrive in the work market of the future, but in a way that enabled them to EXPERIENCE it, rather than just be TAUGHT it. The growth of the Gig economy and the common occurrence of multi-careers / side-hustle jobs etc mean that the opportunities in life are so much more varied, but the skills required to spot those opportunities, carve your own path and figure out how to make money from those options are a tall order for adults, let alone young people.

3 years ago we started out in a local community hall for a 1-week enterprise challenge like The Apprentice. We had a small group of 6 young people aged all the way between 13 and 21, 2 volunteers, 2 shared laptops, and £500 of my own money to get it up and running. The project was to prove that my ideas of getting young people to actually run a real business project and earn money was feasible, despite most experienced professionals telling me I was naively optimistic.

However, I was stubborn, and I wanted to find out for myself whether it actually worked or not.

And I’m glad I was stubborn, because the results were astounding. The team made a range of customised printed products, from t-shirts to phone covers and mugs, and within days of pitching to our own version of ‘Dragons Den’ at the end of the week they were getting requests to buy their goods,and many had ignited a desire to enter graphic design etc as a career choice.

We ran another 8 projects that year, started to get a few small funding bids, and then secured sponsored premises after Nationwide saw what we were doing, and that’s when it all started taking off. From our small 4-person office we launched a real trading youth led business called #iDare, which was a Youth’s Issues magazine. The youth team do everything from writing content to designing the layouts, posting social media, and updating the website. They do EVERYTHING you would do in a full scale “adult” run business. And it works so well you wonder why more youth businesses don’t exist.

We now have a number of trading youth led businesses, including a Digital Media Agency that provides (paid for) services to small businesses and not-for-profits (video production, social media management, website design etc), the #iDare youth magazine, a creative careers project helping artistic young people earn money from their talents. We are about to launch a mentoring service that will help our young people start their own business and work for themselves. When I started the project, never in a million years did I think that we would get so big so quickly, and to be expanding into other towns already is just amazing. It’s been hard work, but it’s so incredibly worth it, and just goes to show that if you believe strongly enough in what you want to do that you can make anything happen.

From that point on, we have gone from strength to strength – quadrupling in size every year. We now have our own 2,00 square foot dedicated youth led shared workspace, are about to launch projects in 2 new towns, and we are selling our youth enterprise projects into schools as an alternative curriculum for students who aren’t thriving in the mainstream curriculum lessons.
