Farewell 2020, so long four

seasons of winter. I shall not miss you. There were a lot of things to say goodbye to in what seems like a topsy-turvy year that went from 0 – 100 from day one. From the bush fires in Australia, to the Corona virus causing havoc out of China as it quickly spread into the international territories, earning its pandemic status. All the while; in the UK folks reeled from the nation’s polarizing political economy that was Brexit.

Closer to home, among other scandals; the royal family grappled with Prince Andrew’s fall from grace, while the Mexit affair gave the royals a final punch of dirty sexy money shaming headlines.

Add a little bit of body text

Further afield in the Global South, Africa’s economy was taking a nosedive as the majority of the African nation’s leaders continued to squander the little there is from its own people. While Africa lost a son; in football legend Papa Bouba Diop, youngest daughter of Madiba; Zindzi Mandela died from Covid. Tunisian Activist Lina Ben Mhenni lost her long illness battle.

On the other side of the Atlantic, came the end of the most fractious term in US politics as Trump refused to concede to an election, he lost by 7 million votes.

Saying goodbye to the most tumultuous year (at least in my lifetime) sounds like an understatement under the grand scheme of things, as we witnessed the WHO counter of Covid-19 related deaths reach the ‘R’ value peak again just after Christmas as if to say; am not done with you all yet!

A NOTE FROM

THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Despite this bleak picture, 2020 was also an amazing year of growth and self-actualization for most people.

Also known as the greatest equalizer year of the century! It also birthed an awakening of Social Justice. For the most part a lot of people were WOKE! Albeit, a lot of lives were lost and amidst the pain and suffering, a lot of LOVE flowed within communities and on social media globally. The world shrunk as Globalization took centre stage once again. On one hand the economy took a tumble; on the other hand humanity showed up i.e. families and communities rooted for, recognizing, and finally acknowledging the most unrepresented and often marginalized un-sung heroes in our society. Indeed it was a sobering end to a year that no one in their wildest dreams could’ve ever predicted.

Although most of us are still bruised and continue to suffer loss way into the dawn of 2021, from where I stand, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Indeed a glimmer of hope and a silver lining as we embrace the Covid-19 vaccines and awake to our ‘new normal of WFH lifestyles. Society and families came out resilient and at the end of the day, LOVE won.

So in this inaugural issue of 2021, we celebrate with LOVE LETTERS from Global Women who, at the heart of it all, held the fault and held the families and nations in their hands literally while multi-tasking for the most part as mothers, wives, teachers, and co-workers. We celebrate in this edition a Spotlight-On-Women from all over the world with a 180-degree turn to making this black woman owned magazine to be the first Thought Leadership publication written by women for women.

Even more so, we now officially and fully ascribe to the idea of Spotlight magazine being a Diversity, Equality and Inclusion advocacy magazine casting a Spotlight on Female Entrepreneurs by amplifying their voices.

Our vision is to enhance locally expert Global Wired Women with global visibility and help them earn the credibility as authorities in their field. Please join me in welcoming back our regular Contributing Editors, along with a host of new ones. CLUBHOUSE: IS THERE ROOM IN ‘THE CLUB’ FOR BRANDS?

There is a lot of hype about the app Clubhouse. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerburg and other celebrities are feeding its invite-only exclusivity. The result is exponential growth, to more than 6 million users, as of Feb 1, 2021.In his market forecast for social audio, Jeremiah Owyang mused that Clubhouse is the Goldilocks medium of the 2020s: "Text is not enough, and video is too much; social audio is just right."He adds, "Clubhouse represents the opportunity for social connection and empathy without the downsides of video."Clubhouse is not alone in the social audio sector; other players include Discord, Yak, and LockerRoom. It is, however, the one app that has people talking.The premise is simple: users can enter into different rooms to listen, or participate in a conversation. They're able to see who else is there and also view profiles.Some compare it to Twitter: however, in Clubhouse you listen to live conversations in the background. It's interactive and unrecorded. Because it is a real-time conversation, content on Clubhouse is sticky, engaging, and amplified by the human voice's pathos. Twitter is widely testing Twitter Spaces, a potential competitor to Clubhouse.

In addition, Facebook has something in the works.

BRANDS ENTERING THE CLUBHOUSE? Very quietly, brands are investigating Clubhouse. At least three major retail brands are testing the waters with very short, 30- 45-minute general Clubhouse rooms. They're looking at reaction and engagement."Clubhouse provides access and authenticity that feels unprecedented and is reinventing the constructs of how we communicate using social as a utility," said Matt Barash, SVP, global publishing & platform partnerships at Zeotap.

"Brands can be interactive entertainment, and it's our duty on Clubhouse to provide democratized access to the show."There is also Clubhouse's 'serendipity factor.' People find themselves listening to dialogues between reporters, celebrities, scientists, artists. For example, recently I was in a small Clubhouse room with Zendaya and director Sam Levinson as they chatted about their new Netflix movie, premiering that night.

What can brand managers be doing right now?

Score invites and familiarize yourself with the app. There are many online tutorials and Clubhouse rooms within Clubhouse that cover everything from Clubhouse tips and tricks to creating a profile.Take the lead. Make the app known to IT/legal and HR partners, departments and companies you represent. Brand managers can help develop policy and procedures around the app and make senior leadership aware of opportunities and risks.Monitor. Brand managers and communicators can start social listening and monitoring in Clubhouse rooms for their teams and clients.Last, since . Clubhouse is in beta, new tools, functionalities and analytics could be just around the corner. Some predictions for features that could benefit brands include sponsored rooms.

The content brands can place in sponsored rooms is endless: product launches, earnings calls, employee experiences, town halls, customer service issues, brand acts, social good/CSR programs.Moreover, Clubhouse will force companies to reinvestigate/ reinvigorate brand ambassador and evangelist training and programs. "Clubhouse presents a huge opportunity for brands. You’ve made yet another cup of tea, checked Twitter and scrolled through Instagram for ‘research purposes’ and made absolutely no headway with work. What’s the point? Maybe you should just chuck it all in and see who’s recruiting? Who do you think you are, anyway, Ms Solopreneur?! If this thought spiral feels a bit too familiar, then you might just need a motivation boost to get you back on track. Working as the sole custodian of your destiny is liberating, wonderful and… really hard work.

You’ve got a lot of time in your own head and motivation can feel like a slog. Enter (with a slight fanfare) the radical idea of self-love. When we love ourselves we make kinder choices and build selftrust, which adds to our motivation. The idea is radical because so many of us have been brought up to put ourselves last. We might be people pleasers but we don’t always add ourselves to that list.

Why does self-love help us stay motivated?

Research from compassion expert, Professor Kristin Neff, shows that those who are kinder and more tolerant of their own mistakes tend to feel more motivated and get more done in the long term. If this shocks you, it’s probably because your self-talk is more stick than carrot. Do you have a secret fear that if you’re kind to yourself, you’ll let yourself lie around all day eating Ben and Jerry’s instead of furthering your biz? Let’s get realistic. You started your business because you have something to add to the world. A drive to make something work. Yes, you might take an afternoon off watching Netflix, but the scientists say that you’ll get back on track more quickly if you don’t beat yourself up for doing so.

IF THIS SHOCKS YOU, IT’S PROBABLY BECAUSE YOUR SELFTALK IS MORE STICK THAN CARROT.

Tricks that are proven to help If self-love feels like a fantasy or just a bit too outthere, then here are some tools for starting the process:

I promise, there’s science behind this. According to Professor B. Fogg, founder of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University, celebrating immediately after taking action or scoring a small win gets our brains to command the release of a hit of dopamine. This activates our reward

1. Random acts of kindness.

According to Professor Martin Seligman, doing something kind for others produces ‘the single most reliable momentary increase in well-being of any exercise we have tested’. What better way to increase self-love than by doing nice things for others? It’s a win-win. The exercise they tested was to figure out a completely unexpected kind thing to do for someone tomorrow and just do it.

Your mood will jump. If you keep doing it, the benefits accrue.

2. What went well?

Seligman is also responsible for finding out that writing about positive events really does boost happiness – and happiness boosts motivation. It can seem a bit cringey and forced but try setting aside ten minutes at the end of the day to write down 3 things that went well today and, more importantly, WHY they went well. Try this for a week, two weeks or more and see if you can boost your mood and your motivation.

3. Get your Shine on!

I’ve kept the weirdest tip until last. Every time you do something on your to-do list, or keep a commitment, take a moment to celebrate. Yes, you read that correctly. A little celebratory fist pump, a great big ‘Yes!’, even a ‘dance like no one is watching’ moment (and just check you haven’t left your Zoom session open).

Celebration can be your lifeline.’How does that sound? Make a loving promise to yourself that you’ll try out one of these tips today and move closer to loving yourself in a way that creates positive momentum. In fact, I’m about to high-five myself (ok, it’s actually hilarious to watch me try) for finishing this article. Good luck and good love!

ON WOMEN I work from home – don't we all! Well mainly yes! And after 20 years of racing around the world delivering training to clients in a classroom, this has been a BIG change in my life…sitting on my behind gathering the “Corona Stone’, yes the weights piled on, but it was my mind that concerned me more…how do you shake things up a bit these days? How do you stay connected? Is anybody out there? So, I'm passing this on as I experienced this myself…not from a boss or a client but from an associate. It was so good I had to share and what a great practice to get into…sharing the love!!! A virtual spa evening with other ladies, who I didn't know well, all on Zoom.

But how can it work?!! Well, it did and kudos to the Spa lady and Joanne Webb from The Girls Club. We were sent a box of goodies for a small fee with clear instructions and even a chocolate mint and tea bag … though a lot of us chose a glass of wine!The lovely spa lady took us through the products yes, but had helped to set up the home scene, suggesting a candle, low light and bowl of steaming hot water and muslin cloth.

We were in our pj’s, make-up free and ready to embrace the closest thing to a spa!

Music was playing as we were led through how to use the products and the ladies got into conversation throughout, where we shared how we were affected by the WFH life-style experience! Anyone can do this by the way… it’s a pampered Zoom session that's all! It was fun and we got a few things off our chest too, result!

So, ideas flowed from this experience because we can use this type of session for work colleagues, families and friendship groups, it’s not limited to any particular group. Think about what you would like to experience, meditation (yes I'm in one of those groups too…and men have joined recently) or a ‘let's just get together for-the-hell of it group!’ Luckily they occur every 2 or 3 weeks, which makes it something to look forward to rather than another laborious scheduled meeting.

The List

These are like drop-in calls, no need to commit if you don't want to! So how can you send and feel love and appreciation with your work family? So much to choose from people! Let me list a few: 1 Send personalised cards for work anniversary, birthdays, awards, better still fake awards! They are so funny- you can make anything up!

2. Virtual this that and the other days - spa, meditation, book club, make-up sessions, singing, art and design, drumming, comedy club!

3. The obligatory quiz nights! Try before you cry ha ha…

4. Personalised cookie/cupcakes - who could refuse?!

5. Surprise someone for doing a great job…or just for surviving a tough week or taking heat from disgruntled customers.

6. A simple THANK YOU for anything they have done, you may want to do it publicly or privately - know your audience folks!‘One-on-one’ conversations, always check in on them as individuals and remember the important things about them and their life and familyAdhoc calls may be a pleasant surprise and draw out any worries they may have. People just want to be listened to sometimes…Virtual coffee breaks are the ‘in thing’ now, so schedule them in and enjoy!Give opportunities for people to articulate how they are feeling, in coaching or groups, they all need to be heard and offered the chance to help othersEncourage well-being, introduce fun sessions or guest speakers in mindfulness, health and well-being and moreThemed Video calls – PJ day, hat day, dress as a celebrity or staff member…now that's hilarious!There really is no limit, whatever you call it. It’s all about connecting to those who are doing their best to work with or for, or alongside you. We are human, we need love, affection, appreciation, contact…so think how you would like to be connected with and duplicate that, as a starting point….Just share the love! The thing about being self employed is that you have to put your heart and soul into the business because there are times when you really have to dig deep and remember why you jumped ship in the first place. I remember standing in my kitchen with baby Amelia in my arms and selling £6000 of training to a local ferry operator and feeling like I could do anything I put my mind to. I so loved the experience at Pitman Training, and I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to work there as a result of my Microsoft Word Expert training. I really picked up that ball and ran with it.

2 years later, when the business was for sale, I bought it. Literally paid more than we paid for our home for what has become the foundation for my every evolving business. Franchises are great, so much is already done for you. The brand, the product, the platform for delivery. In fact, I love franchises so much that I and now involved in three.

After 12 years of being a sole trader, I decided to form a limited company. It created a corporate feel for our large clients and satisfied due diligence for funding organisations. It allowed me to begin the process of disentangling myself from the organisation and enabling it to operate without me in it at all times.

With the support of a superb business manager, I have been able to enjoy time with my daughters, attend school events and be there for them. In fact, I even named the Berelia business with a mash up of Amber and Amelia.

Working for myself has given me freedom to perform on my own terms. Not that its been easy, it really hasn’t, believe me I have had my moments, but on the whole I have been able to do what fulfils me.

I support people in their careers, point them in the direction of vacancies, assist with their employment applications and provide references where required.

Qualifying as a Microsoft Office Specialist Master Instructor in 2006 was a real highlight. A combination of the Advanced Certificate in Education and Microsoft Office Specialist and Expert exams has proven my competence and commitment to engaging people in learning and proving that qualifications really do count 3 years ago I really found my niche. Bringing together likeminded business owners and managers at “Ladies who latte” for informal networking each month, hasformed lifelong relationships. The peer to peer support that we have created across a varied range of sectors is the ultimate reward of being in business. Even during the challenges of 2020, we have switched to Zoom networking and stayed in touch. We have also taken it one step further and collaborated with groups across the South East. Our motto is “There’s no point being fabulous on your own”. Spread your wings ladies!

My latest challenge to myself is embarking on the rewarding role as a Coach. Training with The Coaching Academy, I am undertaking the Personal Performance and Small Business Diplomas. All business owners need an exit strategy. Coaching and networking will be my reason to keep going in business for the foreseeable future. My daughters have their own lives to lead and I really don’t expect them to step into my seat as I move towards a long and happy retirement with my husband, Glenn.

However, if I can provide them with employment related skills, relevant experience, a strong work ethic and a positive mindset, I am sure they will hit the ground running when they embark on their own adventures into the wonderful world of business.

As we’ve already discussed, editorial coverage in the media to target your key audience is a great way to demonstrate your experience and expertise, however another effective way to reach your audience is by embarking on public speaking engagements.

Taking advantage of public speaking opportunities is a very effective way to raise your profile and to position yourself an expert in your field.

Public speaking also allows you to engage with your audience in a way that you can’t necessarily through other mediums. For example, when your audience sees you speaking at an event, they start to feel like they know you which engenders trust. Your body language also helps to engage with them... Contd on next page

An audience can tell when a speaker is passionate about their subject and the body language you use communicates this. Without even realising it, when you care about your topic and are keen to help your audience to understand it, it comes across in the way in which you communicate. How you use your hands, your intonation, your manner and your enthusiasm tells your audience that you know and care about your subject and that they’re in safe hands.

Speaking live also allows interaction between you and your audience which you can’t get through other mediums. During lock-down I’ve done various presentations and webinars on Zoom which has been a solution to the immediate problem, but there’s nothing like standing in front of a group of people and getting that instant feedback.

When you’re speaking directly to an audience, you know if they’re finding you interesting or entertaining and you can feed off their reactions to alter your approach. For example, if they’re a serious audience, it’s worth toning things down a bit but if they’re interacting with you, you can afford to ad lib a little more.

As I explained in last issue's column, many people avoid undertaking PR because they don’t recognise themselves as an expert and are nervous about putting themselves front and centre but keep in mind that if people have turned up to see you speak, it’s because they don’t understand the topic or need to know more.

It can be daunting to speak in front of an audience so if you’re nervous about it, start small. There are plenty of networking groups which are looking for speakers to educate members about specific topics so contact them and find out whether they might be interested in hosting you.

Public speaking is a great way to enhance your reputation as a thought leader so it’s well worth looking into and there are plenty of resources to help you feel more comfortable speaking, from presentation coaches to speaking groups, and the more you practise, the better you’ll get.

One thing that I find helpful both as a speaker and an audience member, is a Q&A session at the end of a presentation. This is valuable for a number of reasons. Firstly, from a research perspective, it helps you to identify the questions people still have so you can include them in your next presentation if you feel they’re relevant.

It can also lead to discussions that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

When someone asks a question, it can often lead you to use examples which people can relate to and see how an approach can work in real life. Seeing you explain how a specific approach has worked for you, or how you dealt with a certain situation can really resonate with an audience.

There are hundreds of opportunities with conferences and exhibitions which are looking for people with expertise in certain areas so look at your target audience and see where you might find them and approach the events which might be interested in hosting you for workshops or speaking engagements.

Keynote speaking also offers other opportunities for PR exposure.

Use your social media channels to tell your audience where you’ll be speaking next, ask them to submit questions that they’d like answered, even if they won’t be there. If possible, get someone to film the presentation so that you can use clips and images on social media which will demonstrate to people that you are an experienced public speaker and are available for other speaking opportunities. The more you publicise them, the more opportunities you have to reach your target audience and potentially, encourage them to attend your events.

The magazine illuminating a Spotlight on Diversity, Equality & Inclusion

W hen we started the magazine we were resistant to putting a label on the magazine. As a woman from an ethnic background (note: I refuse to use the word 'minority' as I don't believe that I'm a minority)! I also resisted focusing on a Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DE&I) themed magazine for fear of being too niched. I did however, have a change of heart as you may have noticed from the theme of my editor's letter in this issue is 'LOVE LETTERS' with a Spotlight on women!

After spending a semester at Oxford Brookes University in International Relations learning about the theory and practice of Global Politics and in particular Political Economy; I was disgusted to say the least to learn more in-depth the mindsets behind the power of political Hegemony and how the 1% rule the world from their ivory towers of middle-aged white male dominated boardrooms. The uneven distribution of power, from politics of gender, to politics of capitalistic driven globalization, to the indecent distribution of wealth driven by coercion and dominance of the global north. I could not grapple with the idea of being a passive student studying the theory that drives a literal sword through the hearts of so many underrepresented and marginalized - and yes majority of humans!

And so being an an unapologetic activist; and a rebel with a cause - I had to do something! Even if it meant just a drop of ink to make (less) than a million think then so be it! That is why I have taken it upon myself as a call-of-duty to make this magazine an official mouth piece amplifying the visibility of so many authentic stories that remain untold due to lack of exposure.

The challenge most people have is where to start from...I mentioned in my editor's letter that 2020 was known as the greatest equalizer year of the century. Social action became a norm and using social media became a community platform for everyone to state their opinions. Albeit non-verbal in form or a blank black post or a pro maga symbol (whatever your opinion on that is)...to the CNN Ad campaign: A MASK CAN SAY A LOT ABOUT THE PERSON WHO WEARS IT, EVEN MORE ABOUT THE PERSON WHO DOESN'T

Let's challenge the Hegemony and how the 1% rule the world from their ivory towers of privilege. What if we could step down from our towers and walk a mile in someone else's shoes? Would that be so wrong?

t the very least and if nothing else; let's A at least ALL challenge the status quo.The idea is to See Something. Say Something.

Do Something about the lack of Diversity, the inequality brought about by systemic implicit bias and the blind-eye turned on lack of inclusion in the work place, boardrooms and politics.

The sign are everywhere, the disparities start from micro-levels and spread into the great universe. From treating and accepting patriarchal families as a norm to allowing a few nations use IMF and NATO to drive and manipulate the world economy and politics in tandem. As a woman of colour, I refuse to be silenced. I refused to be told to stay in my lane. I refuse to be told 'No' this is not society's norm. I vow to use my skills and talents to represent those that otherwise cannot speak, be seen or be heard. It has to start right here. It has to start right now -with a Spotlight On Women!

By Tim Nash Review of Waco (Miniseries: 2018 - ALIBI / On Demand) Michael Shannon & Taylor Kitsch There are some geographical names that instantly draw to mind an event that overshadows the very place itself. Lockerbie, Oklahoma and most recently Wuhan City. Think of these places and you remember their sad relevance. The same can be said for Waco, Texas, since 1993 instantly labelled by the events which unfolded as the FBI clashed with the Branch Davidian lead by the now infamous David Koresh.

Described by some as a religious sect, Koresh was on the FBI's watch list as a potential threat but through a series of events which still to this day remain rather hazy in detail, what should have been a simple arrest rapidly descended into a full blown siege that would last 51 days before a tragic and violent finale.

This miniseries is careful to depict both sides with a degree of sympathy while never really pointing any fingers of blame. Shannon is excellent as the somewhat put upon but ultimately peaceful family man who just happens to work for the FBI. Kitsch is everything one imagines Koresh must have been, slightly charismatic and yet oddly creepy at the same time.

Over six episodes the tension is carefully choreographed, and viewing becomes compelling.

For those of us who know the outcome, it's a long hard holding of breath to see how we get there but one thing is for sure, whoever was ultimately to blame, the human cost was unacceptable and, arguably avoidable.

I founded The Platform Project as a social enterprise 3 years ago because I believed that there was a gap in the market to help young people develop the entrepreneurial skills they need to thrive in the work market of the future, but in a way that enabled them to EXPERIENCE it, rather than just be TAUGHT it. The growth of the Gig economy and the common occurrence of multi-careers / side-hustle jobs etc mean that the opportunities in life are so much more varied, but the skills required to spot those opportunities, carve your own path and figure out how to make money from those options are a tall order for adults, let alone young people.

3 years ago we started out in a local community hall for a 1-week enterprise challenge like The Apprentice. We had a small group of 6 young people aged all the way between 13 and 21, 2 volunteers, 2 shared laptops, and £500 of my own money to get it up and running. The project was to prove that my ideas of getting young people to actually run a real business project and earn money was feasible, despite most experienced professionals telling me I was naively optimistic.

However, I was stubborn, and I wanted to find out for myself whether it actually worked or not.

And I’m glad I was stubborn, because the results were astounding. The team made a range of customised printed products, from t-shirts to phone covers and mugs, and within days of pitching to our own version of ‘Dragons Den’ at the end of the week they were getting requests to buy their goods,and many had ignited a desire to enter graphic design etc as a career choice.

We ran another 8 projects that year, started to get a few small funding bids, and then secured sponsored premises after Nationwide saw what we were doing, and that’s when it all started taking off. From our small 4-person office we launched a real trading youth led business called #iDare, which was a Youth’s Issues magazine. The youth team do everything from writing content to designing the layouts, posting social media, and updating the website. They do EVERYTHING you would do in a full scale “adult” run business. And it works so well you wonder why more youth businesses don’t exist.

We now have a number of trading youth led businesses, including a Digital Media Agency that provides (paid for) services to small businesses and not-for-profits (video production, social media management, website design etc), the #iDare youth magazine, a creative careers project helping artistic young people earn money from their talents. We are about to launch a mentoring service that will help our young people start their own business and work for themselves. When I started the project, never in a million years did I think that we would get so big so quickly, and to be expanding into other towns already is just amazing. It’s been hard work, but it’s so incredibly worth it, and just goes to show that if you believe strongly enough in what you want to do that you can make anything happen.

From that point on, we have gone from strength to strength – quadrupling in size every year. We now have our own 2,00 square foot dedicated youth led shared workspace, are about to launch projects in 2 new towns, and we are selling our youth enterprise projects into schools as an alternative curriculum for students who aren’t thriving in the mainstream curriculum lessons.
