Tornado Exhibit

The project is a tornado exhibit, an interactive exhibit that provides an immersive experience. Consisting of three main spaces: a projection room, a safe room, and an open exhibit gallery.

THERE IS RESEARCH TO SUPPORT THE NOTION THAT AMERICANS ARE CARING LESS FOR OTHERS AND MORE ABOUT THEMSELVES. THIS EXHIBIT WILL OFFER AN EMPATHETIC TEACHING STYLE TO PROMOTE VISITORS TO THINK ABOUT OTHERS.

2016 Lucas Drive, Dallas TX

A tornado exhibition will generate situational awareness to a state that receives the most tornado activity in Tornado Alley. Tornado Alley is a region of the United States, nicknamed for its high tornado activity. This region includes Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas. Texas experiences the most activity, with an average of 120 tornadoes per year.

How Tornadoes Change Lives

*Hand drawn representations of real people

Peña arrived at Briarwood Elementary School, searching for his son. He found him, along with three other boys, hiding in a restroom. Peña protected this group of children by positioning himself over the water close to hinder the walls from falling on top of the boys. After the storm passed, Peña lifted the boys out of the rubble one by one.

Chandler left work early that afternoon simply hoping to see a tornado. He was then tasked with digging through debris to uncover survivors. Chandler helped rebuild his community in the coming weeks after the storm and used this experience to become a firefighter.

Sanchez was a Graves County Inmate on a work release program on the night the tornado hit. He was responsible for saving four people. The community helped save his life in return: released from his sentence early, given temporary housing, and a car to get around.

The site is a detached garage being converted into an office space. It will be shared by multiple workers: a full time event planner, part time food coordinator, part time photographer, and an intern to greet clients.

Located in Athens, Georgia. There are many different needs of each business relative to location. For example: weddings, baby showers, and college graduations. This means that the office needs to be suitable to host varying age groups and genders.

Retail

Located in Portland, on a peninsula in Casco Bay. Portland is a very walkable city. Residents are very supportive of small businesses. Car ownership rates have been declining for years, and ridership on the local bus system has gone up.

A lifestyle store that brings you reusable products, meant to make you smile. The store brings a sense of nostalgia and child-like wonder.

SIGHT

The store is colorful, the muted primary colors are meant to be nostalgic, so that you feel youthful as you are shopping.

SOUND

Horns are a familiar sound at a carnival fair. To subtly remind you of the rush, the soundtrack chosen for this store contains many brass instruments.

SMELL

Carnivals smell like candy, salt, and fried dough. Although these smells aren’t practical for a store, the smell of clean fressh hair makes you feel as though you are walking through fair grounds.

Mural

The mural was originally done on a smaller scale on the inside of a closet door, before it was enlarged to fit a common area wall in Michael Graves College.

The project was carried out by the Interior Design Student Organization (IDSO), led by Jennie Moreines.

A master list of colors was first created by the IDSO board members, before being divided into three sessions.

Each club member was assigned a (column) number, before a screenshot of a row was released into the club’s group chat. Each person would align their column with their row to find the color swatch that they would need to match and paint. After three coats of each color were done, the next row of colors would be released.
