H.E.A.R.T. El Paso Children’s Hospital is the largest expansion of pediatric medical services in West Texas. El Paso Children’s Hospital, which is located near the U.S./Mexico border, opened its doors to the public on February 14, 1012. El Paso Children’s Hospital is the first and only separately licensed, independent, 501(c)(3) not-forprofit children’s hospital in the El Paso region and is the only dedicated Pediatric Hospital within a 250-mile radius of El Paso, Texas. El Paso Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission and the College of American Pathologists.

It is one of eight children’s hospitals in the State of Texas and is a member of the Children’s Hospital Association of Texas. El Paso Children’s Hospital is one of 221 members of the Children’s Hospital Association, and is the designated hospital in El Paso County for Children’s Miracle Network.

Nathan’s Story

M

y son Nathan’s story essentially begins through us, his parents in 2007, when we voted for a children’s hospital in our amazing city. Nathan’s pediatrician, Dr. Carlos Gutierrez was a very strong proponent for a children’s hospital in El Paso and we trusted his professional opinion. I remember that bond proposition passed by a very slim margin and deep inside we were thankful for it...just in case.

Forward to Aug. 11, 2012

We read in the El Paso Times that a “pediatric neurosurgeon” was hired by the recently opened El Paso Children’s Hospital. At that time, we were not completely knowledgeable as to what a neurosurgeon did...but knew that our Children’s Hospital was deserving of pediatric physicians of every specialty. A sense of relief came over me. Somehow an answer to an unasked question.

A little background about Nathan...he loves tennis! That summer, he had spent the majority of vacation was spent at Tennis West. He had started complaining about his vision. Unfortunately, we attributed his complaints to the fact that both of us need prescription/corrective lenses and figured he would also need glasses soon.

Nathan began middle school later that month. His vision complaints continued and we went to see Dr. Gutierrez on September 15, 2012. After examining Nathan, he mentioned the possibility of a condition called esotropia and was going to refer us to the pediatric opthalmologist. But, his instinct advised us to go to the El Paso Children’s Hospital immediately for an emergency MRI.

Thus begins our amazing journey at the El Paso Children’s Hospital

Once in the pediatric ER, we were seen immediately. The care and professionalism of each nurse and doctor we saw was outstanding. The radiology professionals that performed the MRI were thorough in explaining the procedure for the MRI - which could be very frightening in itself! It was at that point that we realized something may be wrong with our child - a parent’s worst nightmare.

We were then taken back to the ER and waited a short while before Dr. Bruce Storrs walked in. THE Dr. Bruce Storrs I had read about just a few weeks back. Dr. Bruce Storrs who treats pediatric issues with the brain. We were aghast as to his presence.

He began to ask questions about Nathan’s past.

Car accidents? No. Sports injuries? No.

Problems with vision? Yes. History of headaches/migraines? Yes. What he proceeded to explain to me is a blur - all we could do was hold our child. Now on paper, the results of the MRI were obstructive hydrocephalus - an abnormal build up of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricle of the brain. A shunting procedure was ordered for the following Monday.

Nathan’s hydrocephalus does not have a happy ending. It will be monitored his entire life. He will have to endure MRI’s throughout and there’s always a possibility of a shunt malfunction. But more importantly, Nathan’s recovery does have a very happy chapter in his life. He has not suffered from any debilitating headaches since his procedure. He has had almost two years of no complications with his shunt. He continues to be bright, funny, and still loves tennis.

He hasn’t recovered the vision in his right eye and the MRI’s have revealed the possibility of a glioma or lesion in the area of the aqueduct - which is inoperable.

Whatever happens from this time forward, we have hope! Hope that if his condition ever needs to be treated again, Nathan can be treated at home. In El Paso. At our amazing El Paso Children’s Hospital!

Lauren’s Story

Andrew’s Story

A

n March of 2013, Lauren was finally diagnosed with pancreatitis at El Paso Children’s Hospital. Lauren spent a week in the hospital to review other sources of her pain. Everyone was very nice and we were very impressed with the environment and the attention of the staff. We met Dr. Aldo Maspons and other GI doctors who assured her that she would be well taken care of.

ndrew was born in Spokane, Washington with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. By the time he was two years old, he had received 5-6 surgeries by physicians in the Spokane area.

At age 2.5, Andrew moved with his family to El Paso where they searched for providers to work with. After several meetings with different physicians, Andrew’s parents felt very comfortable and confident that Andrew would receive the best care at El Paso Children’s Hospital.

It has been a rough year and she has been at El Paso Children’s Hospital for ER visits and other exams. Dr. Othman has been taking care of her and will continue to do so until she gets well.

Dr. Agullo has performed two surgeries so far on Andrew, and Dr. Burke will perform the third, and biggest procedure on July 21, where he will receive a bone graft from his hip to restructure his dental arch.

We took a trip to the Mayo Clinic in December to find out the cause of her pancreatic stones, and they were very impressed with the exams and results from El Paso Children’s Hospital. She is doing very well due to the care she received with El Paso Children’s.

Andrew’s mom, Heather, teaches ananatomy at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and says “Working with, and knowing the doctors and types of people involved with the care of my son, gives me great confidence that he is receiving the best care available.”

Due to the attention and care she has received from the hospital, she is considering becoming a doctor to help children get better!

Heather also gave a great deal of praise to the nursing staff on the surgical floor. She mentioned that they were very comforting and calm to Andrew and also enjoyed joking around with him which helped him to relax.

This secure system allows you and whomever you designate with a private login to access your child’s video feed.

NICVIEW does not require any downloads and works across all major browsers. Additionally, NICVIEW is availabe from all mobile devices, no app required.

We are thrilled to offer this wonderful system to the parents and family of our children.

When children don’t understand why they hurt, or why they have to have a procedure done, they get anxious, fearful and upset. El Paso Children’s Hospital is thrilled be the ONLY hospital in El Paso to offer the Vecta Distraction Station in several departments.

This multi-sensory station is equipped with a Solor 250 projector, interactive bubble column with 7 color changes, Ping Pong insert, Ball switch, Aromatherapy Diffuser and 100 tail fiberoptics to help distract and entertain your child during procedures.

Exclusively for Children MRI’s can be an intimidating procedure for adults.

Imagine how a child feels. El Paso Children’s Hospital is the ONLY hospital in the city that makes an MRI entertaining and fun. By providing special goggles during the MRI, we help minimize anxiety and discomfort. Children can watch a movie from our wide selection during their MRI procedure. Paired with MRI safe headphones, children can be immersed into the movie and remain calm during the noisy MRI procedure.

How many times have you heard of a medication error causing some major medical illness or death?

Here at El Paso Children’s Hospital, we have the ONLY MedCarousel in El Paso. This amazing system is unique because it runs on a lighting and scanning system to help prevent errors. As the operator scans the requested medicine, the carousel rotates, bringing the operator exactly to the place that the desired medicine is stored. Once there, the lighting system directs the operator to the exact bin where the medication is. The operator scans the medicine to ensure accuracy and visually inspects the label and orders. These dual controls have led to no medication errors at EPCH. The MedCarousel works hand in hand with the Pyxis Automatic Dispensing Machines on the Unit floors. As soon as a medication in the Pyxis is low, the Pyxis alerts the MedCarousel, which in turn alerts the operators to the exact medicaton on the exact floor which needs to be restocked.

In addition, the MedCarousel system keeps a tight control on inventory and generates accurate reports for yearly inspections.

El paso Children’s Hospital thrives on family-centered care and understands that family plays an important role in the healing and well-being of children. Designed with children and families in mind, El Paso Children’s Hospital features 122 private pediatric rooms, state of the art equipment and technology, family friendly space, kids “pain free” playrooms, a dedicated family resource center, kitchenettes, washer and dryers on each unit, and a playground designed just for children. Each private room has a bed suitable for children and a sofa bed allowing parents or designated loved ones to stay with their child at all times.
