REFLECTION Since my last portfolio, there has been a lot of growth, both academically and professionally. It is not easy for a student and future architect, such as myself, to find a job in the architectural industry when she is only in her early years of architectural study. I frequently run into a common roadblock; namely, most employers will not entertain the idea of hiring a second-year architecture student - rather, they prefer students who can claim to have five or more years of architectural study completed. Nevertheless, I came across a recruiting agency that contracts temporary positions at local firms outside of the city, which helped me land my first jobs. Although these roles may not have been what I was hoping for in terms of long-term work, it was fantastic having the opportunity to get my foot in the door and gain some valuable experience in the field. In these roles I was in charge of developing multiple sets of project specifications for various ongoing projects with a team of architects. In addition, I collaborated with senior architects on small-scale commercial and non-profit projects, executed various office-related tasks using Microsoft and other applications, and assisted with a range of duties including research and administration. After these temporary positions, I landed a few exciting yet very different jobs, with very different responsibilities. I learned how to manage a book of business ranging from 1-3 clients at a time, and I consulted with clients to better understand their design preferences. I planned, designed, and revised layouts based on the clients’ needs, created client-facing presentations on various design options for each project, and learned how to source materials from vendors based on the requests of project managers.

Additionally, I collaborated with project managers on 2-3 projects at a time and gained a more thorough understanding of the production side of design, engineering, and architecture. I was able to produce high-quality documents and became a go-to person for fast and accurate document completion.

While working in firms, I was also working part-time, creating a foundation for my own business. The idea for starting my own company arose from my desire to find a solution to being less marketable to employers than other future architects who have completed more than two years of study.

For the architect in training, so to speak, I believe that it is fundamental to her mastery of the discipline that she experience work in the field as early as possible, regardless of whether or not she has finished five or more years of study. My opinion is based on the belief that the talent of young, advanced architecture students should not suffer overlooking by potential employers or even the general public. The ability to work for myself has challenged me immensely, yet has taught me some of the most essential lessons: communication, listening, responsibility, self-motivation, time management, and execution. This portfolio showcases the level of work that exceptional underclassmen are capable of producing. The design process includes research, analysis, and integration of knowledge into the creative process to satisfy the client’s needs. Concept sketches, drawings, and models are provided to showcase my unique creative processes; I believe this is essential to one’s appreciation and understanding of business and the final product.

For myself, my next steps are passing segment 2 portfolio, taking degree project 1 & 2, and graduating with my Bachelor of Architecture Degree.

Following that, I would like to study and sit for my licensure so that my goals to be an architect and own my own firm may become a reality.

DESIGN STATEMENT The main goals for this project was to understand how to employ analysis and abstraction to generate architectural relationships.

This project uses architecture and its tectonic language as an active participant in human experience thorughout the site and environment.

My design intent was to frame the process of cider making by creating architectural moments throughout the design where one could stop and and let the building tell its own story. The idea was to form an inner core, represented indoors, outdoors, or both, and zones that highlight connections between above and below. These connections were designed using short sets of stairs or ramps, nothing too steep to allow an inhabitant to flow effortlessly thoughout the facility.

Due to its proximity to major transportation, residential communities, and sites such as hospitals, schools, and farmer’s markets, this location is ideal for amenities such as an apple cider production facility.

HISTORY Years ago, the area served as a home to the McCarthy Quarry. The quarry provided puddingstone, which was first used in foundations since it was softer than granite, making it easier to cut. To negotiate the slope of the Calumet St. site, I knew I wanted to designed a plinth made of puddingstone servicing as the foundation and connector for the new cider facility.

After further analyzing the sloped site, I decided to divide it into three specific zones.

As an inhabitant, each zone would serve a different purpose. The idea was to form an inner core, represented indoors, outdoors, or both, and zones that highlight connections between above and below. These ideas can be visualized in both the concept models above and within the skethces to the right.

PROGRAMMING To further develop the design, I added a program of a 3000 sqft apple orchard and a maker space of 2000 sqft to test developing schemes on the given site. Designing grids by the specific placement of trees & structural columns will define spatial relationships and create thresholds between different parameters, including the bustling sidewalk and the slope of the site.

I have designed the program to respond to the process of making cider. When an inhabitant enters the facility, they would be able to follow the production step by step.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT To advance the idea of three zones translated throughout the entire site - I continued to sketch more iterations to explore all design opportunities.

I asked myself, what would the site be like with one building that served every purpose? Should I place the building on the lower, more narrow part of the site or higher? Should the building be located close to the street or situated to the rear? Where should trees be placed?

FINAL ITERATION

FINAL DESIGN The final iteration incorporated my original idea of allowing people to move effortlessly throughout the space. My vision was based on a conception of transition and movement as a threshold, allowing effortless flow within the building and allowing users to experience these thresholds through my construction. A puddingstone plinth foundation connected two separate buildings. The larger space in the center may be used to house the orchard, which requires direct sunlight, and would allow the sun to reach the trees throughout the day. It may also be utilized as a perfect space for outdoor seasonal markets, which also require full sunlight. If used in this way, the trees, too, would be able to be reached by the sun throughout the day. The street edge of the site would experience sunlight all morning and through the afternoon, while the separation would provide sunlight in the evening as the sun sets.

DESIGN STATEMENT This studio focused on site work and had no determined design limit or boundary. However, there were two requirements, the site had to be a Boston Harbor Island, and the program must be recreational. For my project, I chose Grape Island, located in the Hingham Bay area of Boston Harbor. This studio explores the transitional boundaries of geography and explores how one engages with physical borders such as land/ water, artificial/ natural, exterior/ interior, private/ public, and more. It also explores temporal, seasonal, and social dynamics that extend one’s understanding of place.

SITE & CONTEXT Accessible by the Boston Harbor Ferry System, Grape Island, 54 acres during high tide and 101 acres during low tide, is an island in the Boston Harbor that offers trails, rocky beaches, and campsites. Grape Island is composed of two drumlins, one reaching 70’ above sea level and the other at 30’, both drumlins are connected by a marshy lowland where inhabitant can dig for clams. Grape Island contains two freshwater springs, one on the north side of the western drumlin underneath a large boulder that faces Peddock’s Island, and another located behind the marsh situated in the marshy lowland between the two drumlins.

HISTORY Grape Island was farmed and grazed for three hundred years until about the 1940s. Since the abandonment of agricultural use, the natural succession of vegetation has created a wooded and shrubby landscape. Over time vegetation on the island has changed in response to the climate and rising sea levels. In 1775, Grape Island, although never hosted any military fortifications, was a battle site over hay during the American Revolution, this was known as the “Battle of Grape Island.”

My design strategy is to transform Grape Island into an educational and engaging urban hydroponics farm for visitors to explore and interact with their contingent boundaries the island has to offer and unify nature with the built environment. The infrastructure on the island will serve as a community resource and reestablish the tradition of local organic farming that has dissipated over time. While sea-levels rise, the idea is that visitors would learn to use the hydroponic system to grow food such as vegetables and herbs to promote long term food security and resiliency. The site will also promote well-being by providing spaces for hiking, lounging, and viewing.

DESIGN INTENT The design intent is to generate a new presence and purpose of the island while enhancing its resiliency over time. The design strategy of using compression and release, wrap, and intersect, will be applied to different scenarios throughout the site to achieve the recreational transformation of the island.

The process of hydroponics and desalination is to be translated into the design of the building and site. So the more the visitor explores and navigates the site they understand and learn about the farming, hydroponics, and desalination process.

PROGRAM EXPERIENCE Since Grape Island is particularly small, one of my main ideas was to give the illusion of it being quite large. I wanted each space and activity to feel isolated and to conduct its own experience.

By doing so, the designed environment forces users to explore certain boundaries and transitions in order to explore the entire site further and discover/ interact with the resourceful conveniences the island has to offer.

I applied the predicted sea level rise diagram as my base drawing to futher investigate the organization of the island. I studied the nodes and paths that existed on the site to understand that main axis and from there divided the site into 3 zones. I looked at what each of those 3 zones would be and what program and experience would happen there.

I designed a suspended bridge above the water that would be a direct route for visitors to move from the entrance plaza where ferry drops you off to the urban farming facility on the northern part of the island.

DESIGN STATEMENT Boston is amidst a serious housing crisis. The mayor had identified that the city must build 53,000 units by 2030 to meet the demand.

Simultaneously, the City itself is in its third demographic revolution.

The city’s makeup is changing drastically from when its housing stock was constructed, and varying significantly from the demographics of the greater New England region and the country as a whole. This demographic shift is placing immense stress on low-income residents.

This studio investigates a network of responses to the urban housing crisis in Roxbury, one of the most at-risk neighborhoods in Boston. After critical site and demographic analysis, I designed an urban, mixed-use development that responds to my research, focusing on strategies that make a housing development affordable through construction methods and materials, systems, plan layouts and efficient uses of space.

SITE & CONTEXT In this project, we were given the option to choose from three different sites. I chose site option 1, which currently serves as a parking lot and home of the Haley House Cafe. The Haley House Cafe is an essential place within the Roxbury community. The Cafe supports the physical, economic, and social well-being of the city, one meal at a time. My idea was to design a housing development that would align with the mission of the Haley House Cafe to promote community and positive interaction amongst residents and neighbors.

DESIGN STRATEGY Inspired by the barcelona grid. I wanted to explore various ways a block could be divided to expose the interior courtyards by folding, and shifting opposite edges. Areas of compression and expansion in both section and plan view by lifting specific volumes to create more private intimate spaces, but not feel so confined to one area.

DESIGN STATEMENT This course introduces environmental factors and passive design strategies in order to design sustainably with climate. Topics include energy, passive heating and cooling, daylighting, indoor air quality, and psychometrics. Coursework includes both the qualitative and quantitative analysis through the use of various performance assessment tools. For my project I was assigned a Climate Zone from the Koppen-Geiger Climate Classification map. I then chose a city, Marseille, France, to research the city’s climate through cultural, technical, social, historical, and ecological lenses. I used weather data to understand climatic conditions, develop representation that meaningfully explains the energetic phenomena of the city and how humans have historically and contemporarily adapted to that climate.

PROJECT STATEMENT Just east of downtown Seattle, is home to The Bullitt Center, a six story commercial office building that sits on an oddly shaped site, wedged between E. Madison Street and E. Pike Street. The Bullitt Center is located in Seattles central business district betwwen Capitol Hill and downtown in a mixed-used neighborhood surrounded by shops, restaurants, parks, hospitals, and schools.

Chosen for its visibility and accessibility, the site prior to the Bullitt Center stood a 3,317 sqft, 1-story, wood and brick building, leaving the remaining 6,750 sqft a beaten-up asphalt parking lot.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM MATERIALS

HEAVY TIMBER support gravity load, three-inch-thick concrete floors and the six-inch-thick wood substructure. To qualify as “heavy timber,” the beams were required to have a minimum thickness of six inches (measured in any direction) and columns were required to have a minimum dimension of eight inches. Both must retain their structural supportive capabilities in a fire for at least one hour. the project relied on glued-laminated timbers (also known as glu-lams) made by Calvert Glulams in Vancouver, wa. Wood functions well for vertical loading, and is quite ductile in the case of earthquakes.

Steel is still an optimum material for carrying horizontal loads in the case of high wind or earthquakes. A steel core with cross-tension members helps the Bullitt Center bring horizontal loading to the ground. Using wood sequesters carbon for the life of the building, with 545 metric tons of carbon locked away in the Bullitt Center for the next 250 years. One challenge involved finding methods that take into account the shrinkage and distortions of wood over time, especially at the places where beams and columns meet.

STEEL for lateral support The team created special steel connectors—called buckets— that secure the horizontal beams to the vertical columns and transfer the weight from one to the other. the system allowed for each beam to be lifted by crane and easily placed into the connectors without any temporary shoring or scaffolding before it gets fastened by the framers.

Glulams were used for all the beams and columns. all lumber members were dried and sealed with a wax-based finish in order to prevent moisture to be absorbed by the wood. The product is comprised of many layers of timber, bonded together with durable CONCRETE

moisture resistant, structural adhesives. In the construction of the bullitt center there was approximately 119,000 ft of boards used.

The framing connects back to the internal steel structure bracing for lateral stability. The load is transfered laterally from the beams then down through the columns.

EXTERIOR WALL ASSEMBLY METAL PANEL AT LEVEL 5 The above-grade walls are constructed of standard metal stud construction. The thermal performance of steel stud walls are sub-optimal. The non-combustable requirement for the construction type created fewer options for lightweight, flexible, and replaceable wall systems.

The stud walls contain exterior mineral wool semi-rigid insulation that goes over a fluid-applied, vapor permeable, air and weather barrier. This building was one of the first installations of a thermal clip system for the exterior cladding support.

The spacers are made of fiberglass to reduce thermal bridging through the exterior insulation. Since the stud cavity insulation and exterior insulation is constructed as a curtain wall balloontype framing the performance of the wall system exceeds R-25.

The curtain wall system was manufactured by a German company called Schuco and Goldfinch Brothers. This building is extremely insulated measuring 2” thick and weighing 468 pounds. The mullion mitigates thermal bridging and rests the glass on a foam extrusion between it and the aluminum. While the exterior pressure fully seals the glazing unit and a caulked 4” wide “Schuco Flap” wraps around the entire exterior window frame in order to prevent cold air from leaking. These design moves create a super tight seal.

The curtain wall system unit also opens straight outward so the straight motion puts and even amount of pressure on the entire gasket and window assembly to help the system last longer. A digital controller operates this window opening system to properly adjust to interior as well as exterior conditions. These following design moves result in a U-value of .17 and a condensation rating of 86.

The curtain wall system placement is optimized for both daylight and cross ventilation. As a result of the system’s triple pane construction on low E-coatings the windows obtained U-value is .17. This gives the curtain wall system an R-value of 26.6. The combination resulted in an overall R-value of 10 for the enclosure. This surpasses Seattle’s energy code requirement of 7.2 and more strength than Ashrae’s requirement of 4.9. The Miller-Hull team estimates that the buildings envelope efficiencies contributed to an energy cost reduction of 3% verses a typical office building.

This building employs a number of common passive strategies such as light, cool, and heat. Some of these include daylighting and natural ventilation. The building and its tenants practice behavioral strategies to further reduce energy consumption. This includes the “irresistible stair” which helps to reduce elevator use. The fully-conditioned spaces during the cooler morning hours adopt an office dress code that includes shorts in the summer time.

CLIMATE CONTROL SOLAR ENERGY

HOW BIG OF A ROOF IS NEEDED AT THE BULLITT CENTER

The building contains 575 PV panels at 425 watts per panel that are mounted on the roof.

These were manufactured by Sunpower Corporation of San Jose. The benefit to the low-slope array is that it is positioned to focus on summer energy collection when there are long days that mostly contain overhead sun at the latitude. Even thought these panels are operating at less than optimum output due to their low angle relative to the sun more of the highly efficient modules are able to fit within the available area so that maximum amount of energy possible for the site can be produced. The roof that is under the solar array is white. This helps to reduce the cooling load by about 15%. This does not include the solar PV shading. Since the panels are shading the roof itself doubles the lifespan of the roof.

On the roof of the building there are about 13,400 square feet of solar collection area and the photovoltaic arrayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s DC (direct current) rating is 244.38KW. There are 19 string inverters located under the array in the designed mechanical area along with an AC combining panel board, a utility required disconnect, and the other required building fire safety systems. The solar array is designed by Solar Design Associates of Harvard, MA and installed by Northwest Wind and Solar of Seattle.

CLIMATE CONTROL GEOTHERMAL HEATING AND COOLING The building is heated and cooled by a dense system of veins. This is also known as hydronic radiant tubing that coils a few inches beneath the concrete overlay of each floor. This was formerly known as “cross-linked polyethylene”. These tubes are commonly called PEX. Inside the tubes is a special mix of water and glycol run quickly, warming or cooling the concrete slab, which efficiently radiates into the occupied spaces. The source of the heat for the radiant system actually starts 400 feet below the building, where 26 geothermal wells are 400 feet below the building. This ground-source heat pump uses a closed-loop tube containing a mixture of water and glycol that receives and gives off heat quickly to the surrounding soil and groundwater, which remains at a constant temperature of 53 degrees F. When heating the building, the glycol mixture absorbs the ground’s warmth, before it is pumped back up and run through heat pumps in the mechanical room that warm 53° F fluid into 90° F fluid. In the winter, the system removes heat from the ground. In the summer, the system can be run in reverse, restoring this heat back into the ground. In this sense, the ground is used as a battery for heat. The geothermal well field is under the west side of the building, in an area with a constant lens of groundwater moving slowly toward Puget Sound. As a result, any heat pollution from the wells dissipate within approximately 12 inches. Since the Living Building Challenge requires all of the energy used in the building has to be generated onsite, it was critical to use an energy efficient heating and cooling system. While electric resistance heating is the cheapest and most direct way to heat a building with electricity, it is incredibly inefficient. The hydronic system uses relatively little electricity which is consumed mostly to run a compressor to exchange heat from one place to another with amazing efficiency.

LIGHTING Daylight illuminates the interior of the Bullitt Center for 90% of the time without the need for electric lighting. By keeping electrical lighting at a minimum to reduce energy use was a design driver throughout the process. The lighting design incorporates simple lighting controls such as manual dimming, occupancy sensors, photocells, and plain old wall switches. Some areas of the building have an occupancy sensor which turns the lights on and off. In other areas the occupant switches the lights on and an auto control system will turn them off.

The circulation spaces use carefully placed wall washing light fixtures that dim to 50% after a programmed time. Then they turn off after another set time which guides people with areas of strong vertical illumination. The lighting in the stair area is monitored by an occupancy sensor.

This allows the lighting to follow the person as they move up and down the stairs turning off the fixtures when the stair is unoccupied. Tenant spaces will use task lighting to augment the daylight to keep the lighting power densities very low with minimal need for ambient lighting.

Occupancy sensor power strips are located at each desk to keep lights and computers off when the desk in unoccupied. Simple systems like this and green switches are used to turn off power to the floor at night to help eliminate phantom load of systems that typically run all night. Occupancy sensors turn off emergency lights after hours and all external building entries have motion sensors so when there is no foot traffic the building can fall truly dark. The core building control system is a Digital Addressable Lighting Interface also known as DALI. This allows flexible control of individual fixtures and modularity in the future expansion of the system. The lighting design was by Luma Lighting Design of Portland, Oregon. The use of electricity is carefully monitored and controlled throughout the building through a circuit level monitoring system designed by the electrical engineers at PAE. This system will verify tenant energy use. Each tenant will have an overall energy budget incorporated into their lease.

DESIGN STATEMENT Structures 1 helped develop an understanding of the science and art of structural design by applying essential formulas and graphical techniques in order to find form and forces for long span suspension, arch, shell, truss, and cable-stayed structures of my own design. Through these exercises, I developed a working familiarity with the fundamentals of statics and the concept of funicular form. The course also provided an introduction to formulas and graphical techniques to analyze bending, shear and moment of beams, columns and slabs.

In Structures 2, I develop an understanding of the manner in which buildings carry load. The course investigated the behaviors of structures through the analysis of material systems, sub-systems, and elements. I analyzed torsional stresses, dead, live, wind, and seismic loads in order to understand the behavior of a variety of structural systems for my own building.

DESIGN STATEMENT Chelsea, Massachusetts is a dense and diverse urban community of 40,000 just north of Boston. Over the past few decades the city has grown and changed rigerously. As the city continues to develop and change services for the community must adapt and evolve as well.

Located on an 18 acre waterfront site in Chelsea, Massachusetts, is a mixed-use, waterfront community. The area was previously used as an industrial complex, including an old printing factory. The idea is that Forbes Park will soon transform into 225 live/work loft residences and become home to a new sustainable Community Library.

MISSION STATEMENT

LOCATION// The existing Chelsea Public Library is located at 569 Broadway, Chelsea, Massachusetts. Although the library is geographly located conveniently in the center of the city, it is not the most desirable or safest place for a Library. The area has a history of crime and poverty. The idea is to relocate the Public Library to a larger lot in a much quieter section of the city. By doing so, we hope to create a safer more enriching learning environment for all.

“The Public Library of the City of Chelsea is to be a community library whose circulating collections and public information services reflect the needs of a constituency and to make the availability of its collections and services attractive to all. It is a recognized responsibility and priority of the library to make its services available to prospective users of all ages and backgrounds. The library is the city’s principal organization for serving the adult as an individual by providing resources for continuing education, general and technical information, and cultural development. The library also serves these purposes for those of student age by acting as a supplement to the city’s public and private schools. The prevalence of preschool use of the library and the present recognition of its vital importance are also important factors in the planning of services and collection development.”

TRANSPORTATION// In the Broadway/Eastern Ave neighborhood, carpooling is still a popular way to get to and from work, 25.0% of commuters carpool here, which is more than in 98.3% of all U.S. neighborhoods. The neighborhood is walkable, however, by locating the proposed library away from the center of Chelsea, some residents would agree public transportation is necessary for easier accessibility.

The Chinatown Branch Library serves as a new civic, educational, and social hub for Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood, providing a much-needed public gathering place geared toward inclusive community activities and driven by technology-based learning.

The library is designed to achieve LEED® Gold status. Sustainable design features include radiant cooling and heating, in-ground thermal storage tanks, a green roof and in-ground stormwater retention system, and natural daylighting technologies. A solar shading screen integrated into the building’s glass curtain wall reduces heat gain without compromising views out to the neighborhood, resulting in a building that consumes 30 percent less energy than a typical library while providing 70 percent vision glazing.

The library is designed to increase student gathering space and to provide a sustainable facility. Increasing space for students is achieved through the creation of a study café that is incorporated into the library’s study area, in additon, wireless access makes the study café a natural interaction hub for all.

Sustainable design techniques and materials were considered throughout the entire design process and contributed toward LEED-NC Silver certification. Green features include the use of geothermal heat pumps, energy-efficient and natural lighting, high efficiency insulation practices, use of high efficiency plumbing fixtures, and drought-resistant landscaping.

Temperature of the two-story, 43,000 square foot facility is regulated through geothermal methods. Water is either heated up or cooled off as it is pumped through varying depths of its many wells.

OVERVIEW: The Tootell Aquatic Center was opened in 1970 and is the only pool on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI. The facility is highly utilized year round and serves an extensive base of constituents including the general student body, faculty/staff, intercollegiate athletics, academic research departments, as well as the broader Kingston and Washington County community for learn-to swim programs, senior swim, camps, high schools, and physical therapy.

Unlike many projects, this study investigated several site options within the athletics precinct, each of which posed a number of unique challenges and solutions toward the university’s design drivers and goals. Throughout the study, the options were narrowed to four sites – three of which are additions on the east side of the Athletic Complex and one of which is the renovation of Tootell itself. This program’s unique feature is that this study, and therefore the program, is solely focused on aquatics. This aspect leads to a large amount of the program being located adjacent to one another, and specifically to the pool/deck. This has the implication of a large footprint in relation to the overall program area and was challenging to accommodate the full program within the spaces designated as available.

At the onset of the project the team was advised there were no specific, pre-determined sites to be considered, the only exception was the need to maintain the renovation of Tootell as an option. The team was tasked with investigating all areas within the Athletics precinct.

There were several aspects of this project that helped me grow as a designer. The ability to think critically about the various site options available, rather than just one, helped me work on my time management skills. Since deadlines were strict and involved may individuals, it was essential to stay on track. I was responsible for preparing existing conditions assessment diagrams and developing program component blocks used to test-fit the aquatic program on various sites. These diagrams helped the team, consutants, and clients and really pushed my abilities to jump between multiple programs like AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, and SketchUp while again staying conscious of my time to deliver the job on time.

The proposed massing encourages visibility and transparency to the pools from the outside by introducing a glass facade to show case the activities inside. The building has two entrances from the quad and the parking that helps tie the building to the site.

From the start of the Advanced Planning study for the University of Rhode Island, I was responsible for drawing up the initial pool options in AutoCAD and preparing existing conditions assessment diagrams (plans and sections for a 112,000 GSF multi level sports facility). I helped develop program component blocks that were used convey options and to test-fit program on a variety of sites; and for assisting with the development of design concepts for both build new and renovation scenarios.

After a few iterations, for each scheme, we started to intoduce sections to the clients in order to further analyze which components of the old would be perserved and which to be removed. It was also important for them to understand the connections between spaces vertically.

My role was to clean up the original scans of the exisitng drawings in photoshop, then bring them into Illustrator where I conceptually drew up a section of our proposed scheme. I added color that easily corresponds with the plans and lables to make it easy to orient oneself.

Tootell Addition (Option 5) – The Tootell addition is located at the north end of the existing Athletics-Recreation quadrangle, the proposed building engages with Keaney and Tootell to create a new face to the AthleticsRecreation Complex and define the adjacent reshaped quad open space.

Tootell Renovation (Option 6) - A proposed entry plaza extends the arrival experience and activity of the center onto the quad east to Keaney Road and engages the adjacent Ryan Center drop off.

Additionally, an improved service access and limited ADA parking is proposed on the west side along Tootell Road. The renovation option includes a new building entry to improve internal circulation and accessibility as well as provides an opportunity for new identity for the aquatic center.

This Option renovates the existing facility in varying capacities – some areas would undergo extensive changes and others might receive only minor cosmetic work. The overall strategy is to improve accessibility and increase the amount of space directly off the pool deck by “inserting floors” that better align with the deck elevation. The varying level changes posed a major concern for safety and accessibility.

A lot of collaboration took place during this project both internally and externally. CannonDesign team members, who were both architects and engineers, came together to discuss design relating to the exisitng building and the various site options available. There was also collaboration with project consultants, such as VHB for matters pertaining to the landscape, and ELLANA, who was in charge of construction costs. Collectively as the team we developed a martix that identified and explored potential sites, listing a wide range of criteria for the team to weigh advantages and disadvantages. This was a great learning opportunity working together with other professionals all trying to reach and achieve the same goal. It taught me a lot about clear and effective communication, since errors in this domain may lead to changes in the project budget, timeline and much more.

The above diagram illustrates the initial phase as blue and the future phase as green for each option. The initial phase was used as the limit of work for cost estimating. CannonDesign, togther with VHB, decided what should be taken into consideration for Phase 1 and what should follow. The center spreadsheet and below indicate the programmatic needs for Aquatics Facility at the University of Rhode Island. These spreadsheets where important when designing the floor plans for each scheme as they help guide and influence design decisions.

The Client

OVERVIEW: Transform a small studio apartement under $1000 by restoring, repurposing, and refinishing gently used furniture. During this project I learned how to collaborate with other young entrepreneurs & small businesses to make a dream come true. I also learned about managing client expectations, budgets, and goals. Together Alexa and I picthed this project to the Boston Globe Magazine.

Alexa Curtis, who at the time was a young fashion blogger of A Life in the Fashion Lane, a platform for her to express her feelings around everything relating to teens, body image and mental health, had just moved into her first apartment in Boston, June 2016. When Alexa is not hard at work, she mediates frequently and makes time for hobbies like cooking, exercising, and spending time with friends to keep herself grounded.

Design I designed the space to function around the idea of flexibility. Since Alexaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apartment was no more than 400 sqft, I was faced with the challenge of accomodating her enitre life into one small box.

“my first apartment I’ve ever lived in alone. I paid a [bunch] of money upfront to keep the place, and decided to live on an air mattress until I got the time and energy to buy furniture. With my travel schedule, buying furniture seemed like the least important thing on my mind.”

To get an understanding of what Alexa was looking to achive, it was important for me to get into her head. I requested some inspiration photos of furniture and style that she was envisioning for her new place. From there I searched online for pieces that where in her budget that I could potentially refinish and reuse that fit her aesthetic.

Another major challege I was faced with was communicating my ideas with someone not in the field of design. I created PDF’s to show options I came across to continue the conversation and ideas for each piece. From there we were able to make design decisions together to continue pushing the design process forward.

I primarily used SketchUp for this entire design. It was quick and efficient as a design and communication tool. It was easy to jump back and forth between iterations by creating new schemes within SketchUp itself and was notably valuable when designing custom pieces of furniture that fit this specific design.

It certainly felt a bit tedious at first, but it was a good way to keep track of my spending and keeping the project on budget. Collaboration Skills While working with Alexa to make her dream apartment a reality, I also learned how to work along with other companies to complete her vision.

I worked with Bostonean of Everett MA to find the perfect piece of stone for the custom designed island. They gave me the piece of stone for free in exchange for referrals. I then worked with Room and Board, who helped me out by lending furniture to properly stage the house in preparation for the Boston Globe photoshoot we had coming up. I also contacted a local photographer, Trenten Kelly, who photographed the entire project for both his and my portfolio.

Being the first freelance project Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked on meant this project came with many learning curves. The Mastoras project improved my confidence while working with others in diverse groups, which can often be stressful due to deadlines. Throughout this project I developed a stronger ability to communicate verbally and thoroughly through plans, sections, elevations, and diagrams to execute client expectations.

When I first met George, he described his vision for his new home as simple.

At our kickoff meeting George expressed how he wanted everyroom to have a purpose - there would be no room that he didnt use daily. When he first sent over inspiration photos, he had his mind set on a traditional style home with stone - nothing too fancy. I tried to sway him in a more modern transitional direction from the start, but ultimately had to leave those decisions up to him; it is my job to navigate but not impose.

After my initial site visit to survey and list my client’s project expectations, I sent out a propoals documenting the scope of work. The proposal was to be signed and returned with a retainer fee before any work began. Throughout this project I learned that time is money and it is important to undestand and forsee how much time is needed and necessary for a job of such size. I really learned the business side of freelance architecture. I was definilty not as time-concious as I should have been throughout the project, spending ample time on small details; this was largely motivated by perfectionism, as I felt like my first job had to be completely flawless. I quickly learned that saying yes to everything a client requests is not always realistic when it comes to time restraints.

The first iteration consisted of a more coastal exterior as oppose to the more traditional style the client originally favored while still keeping true to the desired shape. The idea for the interior was to keep a continous line of site from the front door all the way through to the ocean veiws beyond.

Technical Skills Throughout the design process there were alot of conversations to be had. One major conversation regarded the staircase - namely, which staircase would provide the views the client was hoping to achieve while also keeping costs controlled. There was also a major conversation that revoloved around the kitchen layout. Many factors played a role when thinking about the kitchen design. We wanted the kitchen to be easily accessible from the garage, and we also wanted to utilize the existing patio to the left of and behind the garage by having a controlled entry allowing easy passage from the kitchen to the outdoors.

In order to get a final polished drawing for the contractor to be able to start building I had to collaborate with many engineers, primarily structural to get the foundations right.

Since this was my first project coordinating these efforts on my own it took a few trial and error rounds of drawings and many meetings for me to be brought up to speed on how residential foundations work.

Working on my own with the engineers was a huge learning experience since it was almost like a crash course in engineering.

During the construction phase of the project we had weekly progress meetings on site with my self, the owner and the contractor. These meetings were run by me, we would go through the meeting minutes and field report from the week before that I prepared and distributed prior to the meeting, then that was followed by a site walkthrough led by the contractor.

Since the visits happened weekly I got to witness a large majority of the construction process from site excavating to finishing the interior. This was a huge learning experience because i was finally able to see first hand many of the details I was constantly drawing but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fully understand. This in return helped me with reviewing submittals and responding to a few rfis that came in since I had a better picture of how all the building elements came together as one.
