Let The Travel Bug Bite!

Many people have stayed in their ‘comfort zones’ for far too long and for lots of different reasons. Three years ago, the world shifted, perspectives changed, and bucket-lists were set aside for other priorities. But now that the Safari-Season is upon us, we are seeing a world of travellers like never before. And Africa is ready!

Over the past few months, all of us at Jenman African Safaris have been gearing up for this – welcoming guests to top-notch destinations, developing and tweaking our packages, reaching out to trusted agents and partners to collaborate and make sure that all the details are in place for each of our exclusive tours and destinations. With 30-years of experience in the Safari Industry, Jenman African Safaris is prepared for a bumper-year ahead!

While the continent is known for an incredible array of wildlife and stunningly beautiful landscapes, there are many more reasons to come on safari, and one of the main drawing cards in 2023 is to experience our people – up close and personal – like never before. The Bridge between Challenges

DINGANI PRIMARY SCHOOL

and Solutions, Good Will and Action

Dingani Primary is a rural school in Zimbabwe, close to Hwange National Park and the Hideaways eco-lodge Elephant’s Eye, Hwange. As well as supporting a variety of conservation awareness projects and school maintenance programs, our foundation supports the school through the following initiatives:

The Grow Africa Foundation was created by Jenman African Safaris and Hideaways with the aim of making a positive and sustainable impact on the environment, society and economy in the places we visit.

Early Childhood Development Teacher The ECD class at Dingani typically has in excess of 100 students aged 3 to 5 years old and only one government subsidised teacher. The Grow Africa Foundation is looking to maintain the ECD teacher position at the school long-term.

You Can Help: By sponsoring a teacher’s salary at US$200 a month Dingani Scholarship Fund More than 50 % of the students cannot afford school fees (US$ 30 / Year). In 2019 the Grow Africa Foundation awarded scholarships to 12 students and in 2023 we intend to increase this to 14 students.

You Can Help: By sponsoring a child’s education for one year with a donation of US$ 30 Project Penya: Each year we supply a set of washable sanitary pads and panties to every Grade 6 girl at Dingani Primary, allowing them to continue coming to school during their monthly menstruation. This is accompanied by an invaluable 3-day life-skills workshop for the whole class covering topics as diverse as health and hygiene, conflict resolution and leadership. As part of our pledge to support local businesses, the washable pads are made for us in the community.

THE GROW AFRICA FOUNDATION

ROSMEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL Rosmead Primary in Cape Town is close to our office and close to our hearts. The Big Five Club, made up of Jenman volunteers, visits the school weekly to assist with the school’s aftercare and Jenman provides transport for educational day trips and local hikes. In 2019, with the help of the Belgotex foundation, we re-surfaced the preprimary playground, giving them a green and safe space to play. Our next fundraising initiative is for a much-needed dining area for the children.

GROW AFRICA LEVY The Grow Africa Levy contributes towards education, conservation and community upliftment in the Hwange area. This ensures the area and its surrounds are secure and protected

Walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral before reaching the next camp. Shira Hut 4-5 hours hike – 9.9 miles – elevation: +1,000ft Day 5: Barranco Valley, Tanzania A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. We continue to the bottom of the Barranco Valley where we reach our next camp. Barranco Camp 5-7 hours hike – 6.3 miles – elevation: +200ft Day 6: Barranco Wall, Tanzania A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern

flank of Kibo. There is only a short distance to our next camp, which is the last water point on the way to the summit. Karanga Camp 4-6 hours hike – 3.2 miles – elevation: +300ft Day 7: Barafu, Tanzania We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu Hut for lunch. There is a short acclimatization walk to the plateau in the southeast valley.

Barafu Hut 3-5 hours hike – 3.4 miles – elevation: +1,700ft Day 8: Uhuru Peak, Tanzania We start our ascent by headlamp about 1 a.m. so that we can be on the crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded switchbacks and a slow, steady pace will take us to Stella Point. Continue a two-hour round trip to Uhuru Peak, passing close to the spectacular glaciers that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, after some refreshments we continue to descend to reach our final campsite. Millenium Camp 11-15 hours hike – 8.2 miles – elevation: +4,545ft gain, –6,845ft loss Day 9: Moshi, Tanzania A sustained descent on a well-constructed path takes us through a tropical forest. Our route winds down to the Kilimanjaro Natonal Park gate at Mweka, where we are transferred to your lodge in Moshi.

Seeing the wildebeest migration in East Africa is one of the most spectacular wildlife sightings in the world. Almost two million animals roam the plains of East Africa, but it can be surprisingly hard to find them in the vast area that they cover as their movement is governed by the rains and predicting their location can be a gamble.
