Quick and Easy Content Ideas with Tim Schmitt, Project Manager, GateHouse Media Heritage D Looking for a few story ideas you can start working on immediately? Tim Schmitt of GateHouse Media offers up creative ideas in a session that will be fast-paced. The presentation will include references to the original stories as well as some great techniques to help you execute these stories in any size newsroom.

Tim Schmitt has spent decades in various newsrooms — some print, and some broadcast. He was a sports reporter, news reporter, and then managing editor of his hometown paper, the Tonawanda (N.Y.) News, where he led an award-winning editorial page. He's worked as an editor, staffer or longtime contributor with the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, the Mesa Tribune, the Arizona Republic, the alt-weekly Buffalo Current, and the Niagara Falls Gazette, where he was executive sports editor over four dailies — spearheading coverage of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. He also worked as a weekend anchor and reporter at Buffalo's ABC-TV affiliate, WKBW, and was the news director of WLVL-AM in the Buffalo market, where he hosted a daily two-hour talk show covering local politics and current events. He moved to Austin to join GateHouse in early 2015.

You'll come away completely stymied ... or invigorated. This is a how-to session filled with why-nots.

Bill Church is a two-time Pulitzer jurist and joined GateHouse in 2013 as the executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He recently served as southeast regional editor for GateHouse. Church was named GateHouse Media’s 2014 national Editor of the Year. The Herald-Tribune has won numerous national awards during his tenure, including a Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting in 2016.

Fame Lewis Timothy 1699-1738 Lewis Timothy became the founder of the state’s oldest colonial newspaper dynasty when he reestablished the South Carolina Gazette in Charleston on February 2, 1734.

The son of a French Protestant refugee, Timothy changed his name from Louis Timothee when he immigrated from France to Holland after Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes and forbade Protestant rites. Timothy became a printer in Holland before he and his wife, Elizabeth, who had been born in Holland, immigrated to Philadelphia on September 21, 1731, bringing with them their four children, Peter, Louis, Charles and Mary, ages 1 to 6.

Timothy became a partner of Benjamin Franklin, who originally planned to use Timothy’s skills as a multilingual printer to start a German newspaper in Pennsylvania as soon as 300 subscribers could be found. However, the venture failed in June 1732 after only two issues. Instead, Timothy became the first librarian in America at the Philadelphia Library Company, the first circulating or public library in the colonies.

While Timothy was working in Philadelphia, Thomas Whitmarsh founded the South Carolina Gazette on January 8, 1732, but after publishing for almost two years, he died of yellow fever on September 8, 1733. After Whitmarsh died, Franklin sent Timothy to Charleston to take over The Gazette’s press, types and nameplate. With Franklin’s assistance, the Timothy family published South Carolina’s most enduring colonial newspaper from February 2, 1734 until the end of the 18th century.

Timothy’s print shop became the distribution point for mail long before a formal postal service was established, and John Wesley visited Charleston to consult with Timothy on the first publication of Wesley’s hymn book, which predated the London edition by a year.

After publishing his newspaper for four years, Timothy died at age 39 in what The Gazette described simply as “an unhappy Accident” on December 29, 1738. He is buried in St. Phillips Episcopal Cemetery. His widow, Elizabeth, with six children and a seventh on the way, became the first female publisher in America on January 4, 1739.

After starts and stops and nameplate changes caused by the Revolutionary War, Timothy’s great grandson, Peter Timothy Marchant, restarted the family’s last newspaper in 1800, but the Federal Carolina Gazette did not last through the year. Before he could start another newspaper, Aaron Smith Willington, Loring Andrews, and Stephen Cullen Carpenter started the Charleston Courier on January 10, 1803, and brought Marchant in as a senior partner. He left in 1807 but never returned to the newspaper business.
