It was an unprecedented year.

During the summer months of 2020, school districts across the country were facing monumental decisions and staggering questions. How do you operate schools safely and successfully in the midst of a global pandemic? How do you reassure families and staff members? What can be done to support the academic and mental health needs of our students when so much has changed?

Although there were doubts and there was division across the nation and within our own Jenks community, our employees never lost sight of the mission. Every choice, every detail of every strategy, revolved around the idea of doing what is best for students. This fundamental principle guided us throughout the 2020-21 school year. Even as the world around us felt like it was often descending into chaos, our teachers, staff members, and administrators, continued to pour themselves into the daily work of educating students and attending to their needs no matter the circumstance.

Some will look back on this school year and focus solely on learning loss or test scores or the overwhelming challenges. However, I want to reflect on what we gained. We learned just how resilient our students can be when faced with extraordinary changes. We developed a new appreciation for things we always took for granted such as learning inside a classroom, gathering with our peers, or simply being able to see someone smile. We discovered just how much our schools mean to our community. Once again, we learned how to put aside our differences and come together as a Trojan family. It was a year unlike any other in the rich history of this District. If we can navigate through this year, I am convinced we can conquer anything when we properly place our focus on serving and supporting our students above all else.

It is clear we will not all agree on policies and protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We must continue to find common ground in our desire to provide the best possible future for our children. As a District, we will always operate with the highest levels of transparency and trust. We value your feedback and support, and we look forward to the day when this pandemic is finally behind us. Until then, let us continue to show each other kindness, respect, and understanding. None of this is easy, but I sincerely believe trying times are a perfect opportunity for Trojans to lead the way.

The Jenks Public Schools Board of Education establishes policies and procedures for the operation of the school system. The Board evaluates the needs of the District and community while acting within the framework of Oklahoma and federal laws. Each member of the five-person Board must live within the District boundaries, and each member is elected to a five-year term by patrons of the Jenks Public Schools District. Board members must follow a strict code of ethics, and in order to enact school policy, members are expected to study issues relating to public education and familiarize themselves with students, staff members, and school sites within the District.

Morgan Brown, art and global studies teacher at Jenks Middle School, is the 2020-21 Jenks Public Schools District Teacher of the Year. Brown was selected from a group of 10 JPS Site Teachers of the Year by a committee of JPS administrators, school board members, and Jenks teachers who previously qualified as finalists for Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year.

“I am shocked and overwhelmed to be the JPS Teacher of the Year because there are so many amazing educators in this district, and I am in awe of every single one of them,” Brown remarked. “I cannot express how proud I am to work in this district and to have the opportunity to represent the teachers at Jenks is truly an incredible honor.”

A native of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Brown began her teaching career in Yuma, Arizona before accepting a position at Jenks Middle School prior to the 2015-16 school year. In the last four years, she has steadily introduced innovative new classes and programs to enhance the educational experience for JMS students. Brown helped create the JMS Global Studies program in which students learn about the history, art, and culture of a particular country or region, before traveling to the country to complete an immersive experience. She has journeyed with students to the Netherlands, Argentina, Central Europe, and Greece since the creation of the program. In addition, Brown added an advanced art class and initiated a collaborative art class where special education students and general education students work together in a creative large-scale art experience. The designs from those students are displayed throughout the halls of Jenks Middle School.

“I don’t sit still well,” laughed Brown. “I am constantly thinking about what can be done to tap into the creativity of our students. I am always pushing them to be better, and I love watching the process of creative problem-solving taking place in my classroom every single day. I am so fortunate to play a part in helping students express themselves in ways that are so personal and so powerful. It is why I am drawn to teaching art, and it is why I absolutely love my job.”

Digital Day One

ADDING TO THE TRAD

With COVID-19 case numbers rising in the community, the 202021 school year began in distance learning for all grade levels.

Teachers used a variety of digital platforms to connect with students, provide assignments, and create conversations. After two weeks of distance learning to start the year, students returned to school for in-person learning on September 10, 2020. For the first time in six months, students were able to enter JPS classrooms.

Library on Wheels

The JPS Bookmobile provides FREE books to students of all ages by traveling throughout the district during summer months. Unveiled in June 2021, the Bookmobile is part of the Trojans Read the Way initiative and was made possible by the Jenks Public Schools Foundation and the generosity of JPS patrons. The retrofitted school bus is truly a mobile library, complete with stocked shelves, seating areas, and even a freezer for popsicles. The Bookmobile was recognized with an “Outstanding Program” award by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence.

A Winning Tribute

Hannah Brown, a student at the Freshman Academy, created an original design to honor the hard-working heroes of the healthcare industry. Hannah won a city-wide contest with her design, and had her artwork prominently displayed on an outdoor billboard at Hillcrest Hospital near downtown Tulsa.

Home of Champions

Jenks captured state championships in six sports during the 202021 school year. Baseball earned its first title in 19 years, while the football team punctuated a 12-1 season with the 17th gold ball in program history. Boys swimming won a third consecutive title, and girls swimming won for the second year in a row. Boys tennis added a 15th state championship, and girls track outraced the competition to cruise to its first title since 2015.

Best Supporting Employee

Julie Wortham was named the 2020-21 JPS Classified Employee of the Year. Julie, who serves the district as a Human Resources Specialist and Deputy Clerk of the Board, has worked at JPS since 2009. She was selected from a group of 17 outstanding finalists representing every school site and department in the district.

ITION OF EXCELLENCE Enhancing the Experience

The Jenks Public Schools Foundation contributed $317,472 to JPS in 2020-21 to fund academic programs including donor directed donations supporting student activities.

Home Improvement

A new JPS Soccer Training Complex opened in January complete with locker rooms for boys and girls, state-of-the-art weight room, coaches offices, and turf practice fields. The facility was paid for by bond dollars approved by Jenks voters.

The Show Must Go On!

Performing in a pandemic wasn’t easy, but students and staff members in the Jenks Vocal Music program overcame the challenges to safely and successfully dazzle the audience with “A Grand Night for Singing.” The show was available to view inperson or online.

Protecting Our Own

JPS partnered with Total Wellness to set up COVID-19 vaccination clinics for all district employees. Hundreds of JPS staff members took advantage of the opportunity to get vaccinated.

Connecting Students to History

The construction of a low-water crossing is just one step JPS is taking to restore the original outdoor learning trails between East Elementary and East Intermediate, while seeking to honor the historical significance of the area. The two schools sit on the original townsite of Rentie Grove, an African American community established before Oklahoma statehood.

The new low-water crossing ensures many future generations of students will learn the history and cultural significance of Rentie Grove and its citizens.

2021 bond issue On February 9, 2021, voters in the Jenks Public Schools District approved two separate bond propositions totaling $16.1 million by a margin of 78 percent to 22 percent. Jenks’ voters have now approved 57 of the past 58 bond issues for Jenks Public Schools.

Bond dollars from the 2021 propositions will be used for the following purposes:

• District-wide equipment • District-wide facilities management equipment/repairs • District-wide printing improvements • District-wide safety improvements • District-wide technology • District-wide textbooks and media equipment • District-wide transportation • Improvements to baseball and softball facilities • Improvements to East Elementary parking lot • Phase II expansion at Freshman Academy • Updates to Performing Arts Center
