sn’t God awesome? I praise God that he has ordered your steps and led you to this book. I’ve been praying for you! The 40 Days of Delight Fasting Calendar & Journal is not your typical calendar or journal. It is prepared specifically for those who have decided to join the 40 Days of Delight Journey -- the 40 day fast.

Fasting is abstaining from food for a period of time. 40 Days of Delight is a modified fast allowing limited food intake. Participants are asked to give up 1 to 2 meals a day. The general restrictions are no bread, no meat, and no sweets for 40 days. Drink 2-4 quarts of water each day.

During this experience you will learn to enjoy the Lord and draw near to Him each day of the journey. When we learn to trust God and take delight in doing so it comes with a very special promise found in Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself also in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Therefore, the focus of this 40 day journey, is not on what you give up, but on what you gain. The focus is on how to draw near to God and learning to hear from Jesus, through the Holy Spirit (John 16:13).

Each week has a different prayer focus covering six areas of life: The Body, Mind/Soul, Spirit/Heart, Love, Give, and Serve. Each day you are instructed to read a short biblical passage, write, pray, meditate in silence, connect through worship, and reflect by recording your thoughts in the journal.

IMPORTANT: A 3-day preparation period is recommended prior to beginning this fast. This will allow you time to plan your simple meals, pray and seek God’s purpose for you in the fast. Be sure to share with your spouse and/or family as they may be affected by your involvement in the fast. If you pray, the Lord will guide you in these things.

FASTING GUIDELINES The 40 Days of Delight Fast is designed as a modified or partial fast.

HOW TO EAT Simplicity and moderation are key. Assuming you eat three meals a day, begin with giving up 1--2 meals a day.

Scheduling It is better to eat at the same time every day. For example, you may fast from the time you awake until 1:00 or 2:00pm and then take your meal OR eat your meal during the early part of the day then fast the remainder of the evening. Plan your meals. It can be more difficult if you wait until you are hungry to decide what to eat.

What You May Eat & Drink Vegetables, Fish, Fruits, Soups, Beans and Brown rice Tea, Juice (preferably organic, low or no sugar), or water Salad Dressing and vinegrettes in moderation What You Should Avoid No Fast Food. No Fried Foods. No sodas. No diet sodas.

No alcohol. No bread. No meat. No sweets.

THINGS THAT HELP • Eating slowly. Take about 20-30 minutes to eat your meal.

• Eating with someone else may be helpful.

• Putting your food on a plate, rather than eating out of a box or commercial container.

• Prayer, Worship and Praise.

• Eating good food. Enjoy your food. When you fast, your taste buds will come alive! Enjoy every meal and every flavor.

• If you dine alone, put on good worship music in the background.

YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS FAST BECAUSE: You will rely on the Holy Spirit, our Helper and Guide.

We have the best Helper and Comforter available! This is a time where you will learn to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. If the Spirit of God indicates that you should not eat something, listen to Him. If you sense hesitation from your heart, slow down and pray. Hold off until you have peace about eating or drinking that particular thing. When you eat, you should have His peace about eating.

You are not alone.

Others are fasting with you. Though not required, you may want to have a fasting partner. This person could be a spouse, friend, family member, colleague or someone in your church. This person should be someone who will encourage and pray with you. Share your experience with us at www.40daysofdelight.com.

No need to fear. Refuse to be fearful of failure or anything else.

Allow yourself to be loved by God. Be aware of how much He loves you. There is no need to be fearful of anything! Don’t worry about slipping or failing! When we are weak God shows Himself strong in us.

God’s perfect love drives out fear. When you are afraid, remind yourself how Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners. Remember how far your Father God will go to save and rescue his children. He is with you on the fast. (Romans 5:8, 2 Timothy 1:7) Know that you are not condemned.

Know that you are not condemned by God for any weakness you may experience. Romans 8:13 says, “there is therefore now, no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God Himself will help us. We only need to turn to Him. If you get weak or miss a day, pick up where you left off and keep going. There are no fasting police!

Cry out to the Lord when weak. God is your strength!

Mandatory silence periods = no talking, texting, telephone, surfing the internet, or watching television. During this time, you may take a nap, walk, read, or listen to music or write in your journal.

A Season of Consecration Is God first? One could argue that God is first because He is God. God cannot be second to anything or anyone because He is preeminent and by definition is not only above and superior to all, but He is before all. Here’s a better question.

Is God first in your life? Is He above, superior and before all others and all things in your life?

Let’s examine a few scriptures.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Exodus 20:3

“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God. Isaiah 44:6

To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him. Deuteronomy 4:35

Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. Deuteronomy 4:39

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.” Mathew 10:37-38

A Season of Consecration These scriptures give us God’s view of things but does it line up with your view? Is it necessary for God to be first? Is the Lord Jesus a bully wanting to throw his weight around? No, neither is God on an ego trip. The truth is, we need Him to be first to set the rest of our lives in order.

I remember teaching my children how to button their shirts when they were small. They were so proud and happy when they learned to button on their own! Every now and then, however, they would miss one button and I had to re-do it. When a shirt is fastened incorrectly, it throws the whole shirt out of alignment. In the same way, our lives are out of alignment and off track when the Lord is not first.

Even if we tuck in the parts that seem to hang out, it doesn’t change the truth. When God is not first, our lives are out of whack.

The good news is, that this problem is easily solved! We have holy help – The Holy Spirit. He can and will help us get properly aligned with Him and with one another!

To move a car in any direction, you need the key.

No matter how many bells and whistles come with a brand new car, it sits on the showroom floor or sales lot going nowhere. The car may shine, sparkle, get great mileage and stop on a dime, but without the key it cannot do what it was designed to do.

A Season of Consecration To remove our lives from the showroom floor, realize and fulfill our God-given purpose we need God who is the key to purpose and promises fulfilled. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned John 15:5-6 NIV. Jesus’ powerful words cut to the chase. Here He reveals the secret to an overcoming life. Not a problem-free life, but a life wherein your victory is tied to “abiding” that is, “remaining” in Christ. We abide when we yield to His preeminence – His first-ness – day by day. David, the Psalmist said, “…let them say continually, “Let the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.”

In other words, the Lord takes pleasure in blessing us, the same way earthly parents want to bless their children. The key to that blessing and victory is to let the Lord be bigger than the desire or problem, greater than the obstacle and more powerful than the opposition.

Over the next 40 days we will “re-button” our priorities through a season of consecration and hone in on the sacred and holy things of God. In fasting, prayer and reflection with the help of The Helper, the Holy Spirit, we will steal away for a special time of communion with the Lord and step away from the things that easily distract and pull us away from him.

I encourage you to approach this time with great expectation, hear our Lord’s sweet invitation, “My beloved spoke, and said to me: “Rise up, my love, my fair one, And come away.” Song of Solomon 2:10 Approach this time of 40 days with the Lord as treasured time. In this special season, you are setting yourself and time apart for sweet and holy fellowship. It is a special time of devotion and dedication where you are saying to the Lord that you want to go deeper with Him. Record His whispers and sayings to you. Write down your thoughts during the journey. When the 40 days are over, your journal will serve as a cherished and everlasting remembrance of a time when it was just you and God alone. What a blessing it will be!

You will not be the same.

FASTING FAITH CONFESSIONS My fasting is to be seen by God only. The Faith Confessions will encourage you. Read the scriptures and say the confessions aloud. Your words have power and shape your life. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” Proverbs 18:21.

When you are in need, God Himself will help you. We only need to turn to Him. If you get weak or miss a day, read this fasting faith confession. Turn to the Lord in prayer.

MY SOUL/MIND We are more than just a body. God has created us in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). We are spirit, soul and body. Man is a spirit. He has a soul and he lives in a body. The soul is made up of the mind, will and emotions. In Week Two of 40 Days of Delight, we will focus on the soul (mind, will and emotions).

God is love and love is powerful. Love is the engine that causes our faith to work. The Christian life hangs on the commandment of love. It is our responsibility to walk in love toward others and trust the God-kind of love -- agape-to never, ever fail. Week Four focuses on putting love to work in our lives.

Giving is a form of worship. Giving blesses both the giver and the receiver. We can also bless God when we give. How can we bless God? God is blessed when we give with the right attitude and from the heart. Week Five focuses on putting love in action through giving.

A life of service is honorable. Each of us ought to follow Jesus’ example of loving, no-strings-attached service to mankind. A life of service is a rich life. We may not all become missionaries in foreign countries but there is much work to be done and we can each begin where we are.

Let us commit to a life of service that is pleasing to God. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.”

About the Author Carmen C. Marshall is a licensed and ordained minister. She is the former Executive Pastor and servant leader of the historic Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the first woman ever to lead the church in its 107year history. In this role as undershepherd, Reverend Carmen C. Marshall provided pastoral care to the 400-plus congregants, 60 leaders and 23 ministries.

In addition, she has authored several bible studies, trainings, leadership development and ministry tools for the church and faith community such as Excellence in Ministry: A Leadership Training Manual for Church Leaders.

Carmen is an entrepreneur, certified professional coach, master trainer and facilitator.
