WELCOME TO JEKYLL ISLAND Jekyll Island’s natural beauty has long drawn guests to its shores. From the early settlers, to the Jekyll Island Club members, to the thousands of guests who arrive today, this island is a retreat of history and wonder. With miles of beach, marsh, and maritime forest, Jekyll Island is a haven of discovery. Around every corner, a new adventure awaits.

This publication is here to serve as your personal guide to experiencing this special island. Jekyll Island has something for everyone, and in this portable digest we detail all the points of interest – from activities and events to shopping and dining, and everything in between.

Schedule a tour at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, book a tennis court or tee time, stroll through a piece of American history, or hit the beach and do nothing at all. Whatever you need, we have it. We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and come back again and again to explore and experience everything it has to offer.

PARKING FEE

The parking fee for entry to Jekyll Island is used to support conservation and stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of the Island.

Special projects funded by the parking fee include beach crossovers, bicycle path extensions, and picnic area improvements. Annual decals can be purchased at the Guest Information Center.

• When you visit Jekyll Island, you are

a guest in this wild habitat. Treat all

wildlife with respect. Feeding, harassing, approaching, injuring, or removing any wildlife, including alligators, deer, turtles, raccoons, birds, and snakes is prohibited by law.

• If you encounter an injured, sick, or

dead animal do not attempt to handle or assist it. Please call 912.222.5992.

• No fishing or swimming in freshwater lakes or ponds.

• Use caution on sandbars as they can be covered by as much as 10’ of water at high tide.

• Golf carts must have a braking system, reflectors, horn, rear view mirror, seat belts, and hand holds for each passenger.

• No golf carts on bike paths.

• Bikes should be ridden on the bike paths.

• Bike helmets are required for riders age 16 & younger.

• When riding on bike paths, bicyclists must remain single file.

• No vehicles on the beach.

• ATVs are not allowed on Jekyll Island per Georgia state law.

• No fires on the beach.

• No glass containers on the beach.

• Stay off dunes.

• Only take home empty shells and dead sand dollars.

• Stay away from marked turtle nests.

• Fill in sand castles and holes on the beach.

• Pets must be under immediate control of their owners and on a leash no longer than 16’ at all times.

• No pets allowed on South Beach between South Dunes Picnic Area and 2,000-feet northeast of St. Andrews Sound Picnic Area.

• Pet owners are to remove and dispose of pet fecal material.

• Metal or mineral detection devices are prohibited.

• No overnight parking in public areas.

• Lock all cars and secure belongings.

LIVING IN HARMONY ON JEKYLL ISLAND Jekyll Island is a place where nature and humans peacefully co-exist, and one of our treasured island residents is the American alligator. A top predator, we depend on the alligator to keep other predators – like raccoons and foxes – in check, which protects other wildlife, such as sea turtles and shorebirds. Because few other animals threaten them, humans have become alligators’ biggest predator, but Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) researchers on Jekyll Island are working to better understand how alligators and humans can live in harmony.

Through collaborative studies with the University of Georgia, GSTC researchers have used regular surveys and radio transmitters to discover there are far more alligators living on Jekyll than are easily seen. Many spend time in culverts, under roads and parking areas, or in underground burrows and dens. However, you can often see Jekyll’s alligators basking in the sun at the golf courses or on the platform at Horton Pond.

This “sun-bathing” helps keep the cold-blooded alligator warm, active, and healthy.

GATOROLOGY 101 To learn more about the American alligator, join Jekyll Island’s wildlife researchers for an all-things gator class.

During this hands-on experience you will learn about the American alligator’s biology, behavior, and conservation while we demystify common misperceptions about these amazing reptiles.

Ensure your alligator encounters are both safe and fun by following these simple guidelines:

• Do not feed alligators. It is illegal to do so, and is unsafe for both you and them.

• Be aware of your surroundings – alligators may be present in open water.

• Do not approach an alligator of any size. Should you find an alligator somewhere it shouldn’t be, please call Jekyll Island Wildlife Response at 912.222.5992.

• Do not attempt to retrieve a golf ball that has fallen in water or near an alligator.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a rehabilitation, research, and educational facility that offers the public a chance to learn about sea turtles and see rehabilitation efforts in action.

A hide-and-seek style game played on Jekyll Island. Each day, volunteers called Beach Buddies hide glass floats, created by local artisans hand-picked from around the world, throughout the island for lucky guests to find and keep.

J E K Y L L’S B E AC H E S The beaches on Jekyll Island are unlike those of any other coastal destination. Best known for their natural bounty, each of Jekyll Island’s beaches is completely different than the other. From bird watching on St. Andrews to photo ops on Driftwood Beach, these sun-drenched sanctuaries offer a truly invigorating experience.

DRIFTWOOD BEACH Consistently voted one

of America’s “Ten Most Romantic Beaches,” Driftwood Beach is an escape to another world. Ancient driftwood monuments line the waterfront, creating an unforgettable backdrop. Perhaps that’s one reason USA TODAY featured it as one of the best Southern beaches for a weekend escape.

GREAT DUNES* This is Jekyll Island’s most

popular beach for families. The 20-acre, beachfront park is easily accessible and offers several picnic pavilions, an activities deck, play areas, and bocce ball and volleyball courts.

Ample parking and public beach access with restrooms and showers are available.

SOUTH DUNES With an elevated boardwalk crossing 20-foot sand dunes, this park features beach access, an observation deck, and a freshwater pond. Picnic tables and grills along with open-air and screened-in picnic pavilions make this park the perfect spot for a relaxing family event.

ST. ANDREWS* This beach is a short walk from Jekyll Point, the southern-most tip of the Island. It’s a popular spot for watching migratory birds as well as groups of dolphins. The picnic area features a twostory wildlife viewing platform and the Wanderer historical marker.

GLORY BEACH Graceful sea oats and pristine sand dunes line Glory Beach on the south end of Jekyll Island. You’ll be amazed at how wide this beach is – and you’ll see why movie scouts chose to film portions of “Glory” here. Glory Boardwalk is next to the soccer complex on the Island’s south end.

The Wanderer Memorial

Enjoy the charming chapel which Club Member Frederic Baker wanted to be “worthy of the island.” Delight in the architectural whimsy of its animal carvings, terracotta gargoyles, and Tiffany and Armstrong stained glass windows.

The Memorial commemorates survivors of the slave ship Wanderer, one of the last known groups of enslaved Africans sold in the United States, nearly 50 years after the importation of slaves was outlawed.
