History sixties beginning In Finland in 1964 Pentti Viitala and a friend bought a lorry and began reupholstering used sofas in the hay barn on his family farm. They sold these sofas door-to-door. His wife Viola and son Timo (now chairman of the Board) are pictured helping sewing and making buttons in these early years.

seventies schoolhouse days The Viitala family lived and operated a factory from an old schoolhouse. During this time, they made the transition from reupholstering to manufacturing new sofas. To reduce lead times and meet the rising demand, the family began to warehouse all the raw materials needed for the expanding production line. As additional lorries were purchased, home delivery services expanded all over Finland.

eighties growth years After acquiring a local sawmill, operations expanded to include the frame building step. The business was primed for increased production, initiated a B2B Sales Model, and hired twenty full time employees to aide production and sales. After a decade of strong growth, the business began construction of the Kurikka factory. And to highlight the significance of this time, Pentti and Viola named their children as partners in the family business.

nineties globalization Timo Viitala, a born leader and visionary with an intimate understanding of the business, was named CEO. Today, Timo remains an active member of our team as Chairman of the Board where he continues to mentor and share his vision. Immediately after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the business began to export to Russia and its neighboring countries. This boosted the company and saved it from the recession that gripped the Scandinavian market. As exports and market share in Finland grew, so did the need for capacity. The second production line was completed and outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment

millenium further expansion Growth continued to demand additional resource and capacity. The business acquired its third production line along with 400 full time employees. With its new output capability, the business could better support its export market, and supply furniture to roughly 550 retailer location across 15 countries around the globe.

twenty-tens a new chapter Luonto Furniture, Inc. came to North America in 2012 and established a strong footing in the market. With showrooms at both High Point and Las Vegas Markets and more than 300 Authorized Retailer locations across the continent, we have developed a strong foundation for sustainable growth. In 2019, Luonto strategically relocated to Charleston, SC for better access to the ports, and opened the Luonto Distribution Center. This center has enabled us to elevate our fulfillment experience and provide better service to our customers. Sustainable Heritage Our Sustainable Heritage

“it’s done simply because it’s who we are and where we come from”

Our sustainable manufacturing practices are just part of our heritage, it’s done simply because it’s who we are and where we come from. Whether it’s how we re-purpose our sawdust into pellets for fuel for heating our production lines, or how we partner with local artisans who use our scraps instead of writing it off as waste. We strive to partner with vendors who support our efforts, minimize our carbon foot print, secure our longevity and deliver fine functional furniture for many years to come. Forests in Finland are typically harvested once per generation, roughly every eighty years. Our family’s forest is nearing the end of its life cycle and will soon be harvested. Afterward, preparations are made for the following generation’s care until it’s again ready for harvest. Since the 17th century management of Finland’s forestry has been under government control. It wasn’t until 100 years ago, an emphasis on sustainable yields began, ensuring growth is more than yield. Comprised of Northern Europe’s native Nordic Spruce, 70% of the forest’s timber output is exported.

Remove any excess residue on the upholstery.

Apply water over the stain, either directly or using a damp cloth. Wait a few seconds.
