The 1619 Memorial and Museum

Spring 2021

The past semester I took comprehensive studio, where my partner Shaan Lakshmanan and I designed our proposal for The 1619 Memorial and Museum. The project is situated on the coast of Fort Comfort, Virginia, the site where the first enslaved Africans were brought to America.

Our project aimed to create an experience that encourages visitors to reckon with the past, acknowledge the present, and prompt a more just future. Our project’s form is derived from a layer of site datums and views. The datum lines help inform our series of 4 angled bars. The critical views we highlight in our project are those to Angola, Fort Monroe, the Point Comfort lighthouse, Hampton University. These view lines can be read as voids throughout our project. The project is wrapped in a sun shading system that’s pattern is derived from traditional Angolan textiles. Our form, interior, and exterior spatial planning, structure, and systems are informed by the layers of site line. Through different applications of layering, our project can be thought of as an architectural palimpsest of narratives that already exist within the site, encouraging visitors to consider the site’s deep history.

Hybrid Housing and E-Waste Center in Castiglione D’Orcia Fall 2020

This past fall, in studio, while working in groups of two, we began with explored 5G. With telecommunications, generations are being constantly replaced, making this out of date technology undesirable and obsolete. Evidently, 5G will be replaced by a new generation, and society will dispose of 5G, creating an endless cycle of waste. How can we reframe the way we think about technology, not as a cycle of waste, but rather a cycle of repurpose? From this question, my partner and I developed a program that would follow two different yet intertwined cycles, the cycle of human life and the cycle of technology.

Interior Views, Shared Living Space

Our project begins to synthesize the cycle of humans and technology by proposing an intergenerational co-housing community with a technology recycling center. The project aims to promote engagement with different generations and uses data to foster adaptable living. To achieve this goal, we proposed an app that becomes the bridge between technology, different generations, and the project’s spatial arrangement. When recycling the residence physical technology, we also propose recycling their data. This data allows the app to learn the user’s habits and for the building to adapt and predict the user’s needs.

Supportive Housing In the South Bronx

Spring 2020

In the spring of 2020, I studied off-campus at the Syracuse campus in New York City. Our studio 3 - BEDROOM spent the semester focusing on affordable housing. Working in a group of three, we took on the challenge of designing supportive housing in Mott Haven in the South Bronx. The site is located next to what will be one of the four new borough-based jails in New York due to the closing of Riker’s Island. This very challenging site gave us many new concepts to think about when it comes to our design.

Our concept revolved around four key ideas.

First, preserve and protect the South Bronx; this idea was crucial to our project as the South Bronx faces the threat of gentrification, and we wanted our project to support and foster community-driven growth through resident-run commercial programs and safe outlets for getting guidance.

Second, creating an urban ecosystem; this concept would offer the residence the option to live, work, and play, all within our project.

Third, adaptable micro-living; the compact forms of our units densify the building and encourages sustainable living.

Fourth, intergenerational housing; this final concept was one we knew the community would appreciate. From our conversations with the community, we knew that to avoid displacement and promote continuous safe and affordable housing throughout the many phases of life, we needed to design for multigenerational families.

Housing Project along New York City’s High Line

Fall 2019

In the fall of my third year, my studio was tasked with imagining a new way of living. Through the lens of New York City’s High Line, we were tasked with designing a housing project. Our proposals needed to go against the ideas of conventional housing to create something radical and new. Through my lived experience of having loved ones with chronic illnesses, I came up with the idea of creating a safe space for people with chronic illnesses that depend on the use of medical marijuana. The project is comprised of pixels that are connected in different organizations. These clusters create multi-family units that provide optimal sunlight and access to either private or shared terraces. Each floor has communal cooking and dining spaces located in the center of the floor’s circulation path, as well as communal growing areas where residents are encouraged to grow and cultivate the marijuana they use.

This growing space and doctors’ offices and treatment centers make up 30% of the building that is not residential. Overall this project aimed to create a community for the chronically ill who feel judged for their preferred treatment.
