MPSTMA SPRING WORKSHOP The 2018 MPSTMA Spring Workshop took place on March 8 at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul and was sponsored by 22 vendors who set up tabletops indoors.

Approximately 200 people atttended the 2018 workshop.

The venue featured two theatre auditoriums which enabled MPSTMA to offer two tracks for members to take at the Workshop. The MPSTMA Spring Workshop Committee produced a variety set of speakers incuding playground maintenance, web-based irrigation systems, tree inventory procedures and a motivational talk.

The workshop began at 7 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts available courtesy of Midwest Groundcover Express Blowing Service and St. Croix Recreation Fun Playgrounds. After an hour of mingling, the group had a choice of two breakout sessions to attend.

The sessions took place in two auditoriums: Auditorium 1 : "Playground Maintenance" by Tom Norquist, PlayCore; "Web-based Irrigation Systems:

by Jim Ruzicka, Mainline Consulting Auditorium 2: "Value of Conducting a Tree Inventory" by David Katz, Birch Tree Care; "Masterful Leadership: Uplevel Your Presence On and Off the Field” by Barbara Churchill, Barbara Churchill Coaching & Consulting.

Vendors had an opportunity to address the crowd for a couple minutes followed by a networking hour where members and vendors had time to visit before lunch.

Lunch was sponsored by Midwest Groundcover Blowing Service.

Following lunch, Chase Straw Ph.D., from the University of Minnesota, gave a talk about performance testing of sports fields and the enhancements in sensor/sampling technology. The presentation discussed how to operate current sensor/sampler technology and integrate their use into daily management practices."

On June 27, a MPSTMA group of 85 met in Eagan to tour the new sports fields at the TCO Performance Center practice home of the Minnesota Vikings Football Club.

Vikings' Sports Field Managers Grant Davisson and Dan Seidel hosted and addressed the group and talked about how each of the four outdoor sports fields differ and serve a specific purpose. Each field compares with the variety of surfaces the Vikings will face on the road in the National Football League.

Local football teams will have opportunities to play on these fields. The synthetic turf field is wide enough and long enough for a regulation soccer field.

MN, IA & WI CHAPTER CLASH - La Crosse, Wisconsin

Forest Hills Public Golf Course, site of the 2018 Chapter Clash, uniquely has trains running through the course during play.

Forest Hills will also be the site of 2019 Chapter Clash this summer.

STMA Chapter representatives from Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin meet on Friday, July 13 in La Crosse, WI for the 2018 Chapter Clash Golf Tournament which was played at Forest Hills Public Golf Course.

Minnesota won the rain-shortened 9-hole golf event.

MPSTMA FALL WORKSHOP The 2018 MPSTMA Fall Workshop took place at the City of Eagan Community Center on November 14.

Keynote Speaker Sam Richter, who’s considered a Social Selling expert, focused his talk on your personal web presence and how to control it. Interesting stuff.

Nick Christians, an Iowa State University professor of Turfgrass Management also will be speaking at the Fall Workshop. A complete Agenda will be forwarded soon.

Chad Giblin, Research Fellow, UFore Nursery & Lab, Department of Forest Resources, University of Minnesota, will give a morning talk on tree planting and pruning recommendations for the first 15 years.

Roger Weinbrenner, CSFM, University of St. Thomas, will give a talk focusing on the maintenance of synthetic turf.

MPSTMA COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT Each year, the MPSTMA spends a day renovating a playing field in Minnesota. All MPSTMA members are encouraged to participate.

This is a great way to learn hands-on what it takes to renovate a baseball field, build a mound, how to prepare the area around home plate including the batter’s box and other maintenance practices. Mike McDonald, a certified Sports Field Manager at TCF Bank Stadium annually has led a group of volunteers to renovate a sports field in Minnesota as a Community Service Project for the past decade.
