ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The subjects who appear in these photographs are in the main, photographers.

They are all members of an anarchic photographic group called the ‘free radicals’ The images result from a self assigned project at a photographic retreat undertaken by the free radicals at the former mental asylum at Beechworth, Victoria.

My thanks to my fellow free radicals for agreeing to be part of this project, and my utmost appreciation and amazement at their ability to slip so easily into character.

Special thanks to Gordon Williams for retrieving three lost rolls of film from the rubbish at the loony bin, without which this project would be somewhat incomplete Thanks also to my schizophrenic cousin Julian Man for our long meandering conversations over recent years that have acted as a point of reference for me on the subject of mental illness.

TECHNICAL All images were made with a Mamiya RB67 medium format camera with a 250mm focal length lens.

Film stock was Ilford Delt 100, processed in Ilford Plus developer.

Negatives were scanned at 300dpi on an Agfa Snapscan flatbed scanner with a transparency head.

Resulting files have undergone minor retouching in Adobe Photoshop
