Jeffery Whippo Explains How Journalists Were Threatened To Be the Part of Operation Mockingbird Jeffery Whippo shares his views on the insides of Operation Mockingbird. He explains that it was an alleged CIA project that recruited various journalists to write fake stories promoting government ideas while dispelling communist ones. This large-scale project was undertaken by the CIA in the beginning of 1950s. Moreover, the recruited journalists were put on a payroll by CIA and instructed to write fake stories that promoted the views of the intelligence agency. Talking about CIA, Jeffery D Whippo explains that it was created in 1947 immediately following the end of World War II due to growing tensions with USSR. Frank Wisner, director of the Office of Special Projects, established Mockingbird. He was told to concentrate on propaganda, economic warfare, preventive direct action, including sabotage, antisabotage, demolition, and evacuation measures; subversion against hostile states, including assistance to underground resistance groups, and support of indigenous anti-Communist elements in threated countries of the free world. According to him, CIA maintained a huge global network that provided intel for the organization and “at times” attempted to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. As this operation developed, it also worked to influence foreign media and political campaigns, in addition to activities by other operating units of the CIA. Various journalists joined CIA’s payroll and wrote fake stories to disseminate the agency’s agitprop and providing intelligence. Other journalists were threatened and blackmailed into cooperating with Mockingbird. Various others were given fabricated information for their actions in order to engender their support for the CIA’s mission. Jeffery Whippo further states that this program has never been officially discontinued.
