Jeff Whippo considers stress to have both positive and negative effect on behavior. The human’s biological response to stress involves many physiologic and chemical changes that increase heart rate, changes in adrenalin, increases in cortisol or blood sugar, & increase in blood pressure. Stress can cause people to have reduced job performance and decreased organizational effectiveness in the workplace. Work related stress is known to cause an increase in drug and alcohol use in the workplace. Individuals who experience overwhelming stress in the workplace tend to have increased absenteeism, intentions to quit, and actual turnover. Stress can also cause physical, emotional, and behavioral problems which can affect your health, energy, well-being, mental alertness, and personal and professional relationships.
