UrologyUpdate Jefferson Urology now has a new location to serve our patients in New Jersey. This August, our Department began office hours as part of the new JUP specialty practice in Burlington, N.J. Dr. Jeanne Llenado (pictured) will be the primary provider of general urology services at the new location supported

by Dr. Mark Mann. She will maintain her office hours at The Navy Yard and continue her surgical care at Methodist.

This new JUP specialty practice is located in the Dorfner Family Medicine facility located at 811 Sunset Road, Suite 104, Burlington, N.J.

Earlier this year, Dr. Scott Dorfner and his wellrespected family medicine practice joined Jefferson

Health. This alignment expanded access of Jefferson primary care to South Jersey residents. The addition of urology and other specialties will strengthen continuity of care with Jefferson health care in the region.

Dr. Julia Barthold was elected President-Elect for the Society of Pediatric Urology at the 2016 American Urological Meeting in San Diego. Her term as president will begin May 2017. Dr. Barthold is the first woman elected as president of the recognized organization for pediatric urology in the United States. She is Associate Chief, Division of Pediatric Urology, Department of Surgery at duPont Hospital for Children and Professor of Urology at Thomas Jefferson University.

Urology, has been appointed Program Director in the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Professional Program in the Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences. The post-baccalaureate program, sometimes referred to as the P4 Program, invites students to Jefferson who are interested in attending medical and other professional graduate schools in order to refine their academic credentials. According to Dr. Gerald Grunwald, Dean, Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences, “Dr. Byrne has been an outstanding mentor to hundreds of Sidney Kimmel Medical College students and residents in the Department of Urology. bringing her unique skills to a new group of Jefferson students.” Dr. Byrne will continue her academic appointment with the Department of Urology and her work on special Department of Urology research and publication initiatives.

in the 2016-2017 AUA Leadership Program. This was a very competitive process and limited to 20 nationwide finalists, who will participate in this flagship program. Dr. Edouard Trabulsi is a former graduate of this program.

Dr. Deb Glassman will assume the role of Associate Director for Urology Medical Education working with Dr. Costas Lallas, Dr. Dolores Shupp Byrne and John Davis. Dr. Glassman will fill in the important void left by the retirement of Dr. Leonard Frank focusing on the area of small group discussions.

Welcome back to Dr. J. Ryan Mark, who is returning as the Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology. Dr. Mark graduated from our program as a Chief Resident in 2015 and completed a fellowship in urology oncology at the Carolinas Medical Center. Our fall newsletter will highlight his background and accomplishments.

Drs. Leonard G. Gomella, Patrick J. Shenot and Edouard J. Trabulsi were recognized by their peers as top urologists in the 2016 Philadelphia Magazine Top Doc’s edition. Dr. Gomella has been recognized every year since 2002, Dr. Shenot every year since 2010, and Dr. Trabulsi every year since 2011.

Dr. Patrick Shenot is the new Physician Director for Practice Operations in the Department of Urology. We thank Dr. Costas Lallas for serving as the Physician Director of the 833 Office over the last year. Dr. Lallas has become more involved with student education in the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, as well as in the Rector Simulation Center. Dr. Shenot has already performed many important functions as the master schedule coordinator and working in the billing and coding arena.

Dr. Costas Lallas Appointed Director of Surgical Simulation at the Rector Center

Dr. Costas Lallas, FACS, Professor of Urology, is the new Director of Surgical Simulation at the Rector Center. Drs. Kate and Dale Berg, who lead our world-class facility in the Hamilton Building, made the announcement in June. Dr. Lallas will continue in his role as Director of Robotic Surgery for TJUH and Vice Chair for Educational Programs in the Department of Urology.

Dr. Lallas has worked with the simulation center for the past few years on curricular interventions that foster surgical skills teaching and assessment.

He has clinical and content expertise in robotic surgery and has been a leader in beginning to develop a curriculum that uses simulation to foster the attainment of the skills involved in best practices use of Jefferson’s surgical robot. (The simulation center has been able to secure the funds to purchase a robotic simulator that will have its home at the Rector Center.)

Dr. Lallas will lead in developing a formal curriculum to use this powerful set of educational tools for the Rector Center and for learners in all surgical disciplines across Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital.

Dr. Leonard Gomella has fully supported Dr. Lallas in all these roles and notes, “This Surgical Simulation Directorship is a natural progression for Dr. Lallas, who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to training students, residents and fellows in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques.”

We are pleased to acknowledge that all five of our Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) class of 2016 students interested in Urology successfully matched this year.

Urology is an early match with students automatically entering 1-2 years of preliminary general surgery training preurology. In addition to congratulating our students, our department acknowledges the outstanding commitment of our faculty in mentoring our student applicants. In particular, Drs. Shenot, Lallas, and Byrne should be recognized for spearheading this achievement.

With the national match rate for urology of only 63% this year, our 100% match rate for our students is commendable. Nationally, SKMC has distinguished itself as one of the leading U.S. medical schools to have graduates enter urology. The successful match of 95% of SKMC students since 2014 is something we are very proud of.

Our new urology interns who started July 1, are: Alex Uhr, MD, Benjamin Rudnick, MD, both graduates of SKMC, and Victor Kucherov, MD, a graduate of the University of Rochester. Christopher Caputo, MD, joined the Urology residency program as a PGY 2 in July. Dr. Caputo, who completed his general surgery internship at Temple, is replacing Stephen Bracewell, MD, who will be transferring to a radiology program at the University of South Carolina. We wish Dr. Bracewell the best in his new career.

Pennsylvania Urologic Research Collaborative (PURC) Jefferson Urology has joined with several other Philadelphia urology departments and groups as founding members of PURC, a physician-led, quality improvement collaborative for prostate cancer in Southeast Pennsylvania. Together with Fox Chase, Temple, University of Penn, Einstein and Academic Urology, Jefferson has taken an important role to improve outcomes and measure performance for men with prostate cancer. Modeled after MUSIC, the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative, this initiative is based on trust, transparency, data sharing and collaboration to create clinical registries to track clinical pathways, patient risk status and clinical outcomes for all aspects of prostate cancer care.

Prostate cancer is a common condition, with rapidly changing treatment patterns, which are costly and highly variable. There is also a paucity of level I evidence to guide treatments, and little data collection or benchmarking to track outcomes and clinical pathways, making this condition an ideal one for regional collaboration and investigation.

PURC recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its creation and rollout, with nearly 3,000 patients entered as of June 1. Each participating center, in conjunction with the Health Care Improvement Foundation (HCIF) and funding in part from Independence Blue Cross, utilizes data extractors to enter patient data into a web-based platform

supported by Arbormetrix.

This allows collaborative data sharing across all partners with a secure and robust web-portal. Anne Calvaresi, CRNP, and Emilee Rutherford, and more recently by Dr. Mutaz Aljader, a urology research fellow from Jordan, started the Jefferson data entry initiative.

The initial areas of investigation for PURC have focused on prostate biopsy and the appropriate use of imaging for newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. PURC’s major goal is to reduce variation in care delivery and service utilization. Beyond the initial focus on biopsy and imaging, other aspects of prostate cancer will also be tracked, including active surveillance rates, radical prostatectomy variables and outcomes, and utilization and incorporation of new technologies, including genomic assays and proton beam therapy. In these attempts to better measure and influence outcomes following prostate cancer and radical prostatectomy, the hope is to improve patient-centered decision making for prostate cancer screening and treatment choices for clinically localized prostate cancer.

Another important aspect of PURC and similar collaborative efforts is the ability to serve as a CMS Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR), which can be used as a practice management tool for regional and national benchmarking and fulfill practice-level reporting requirements for pay-forperformance incentive plans in MACRA and MIPS. PURC will be applying for CMS QCDR eligibility with plans to deliver practice-level reports on prostate biopsy outcomes and prostate cancer imaging to individual practices on a regular basis in the coming year.

Congratulations to Dr. Amar Raval, Chief Resident, as the recipient of the Captain Max Koppel Resident Achievement Award for the highest in-service exam in 2015.

The Department of Urology honored our graduating Chief Residents and Fellows at the 2016 David M. Davis Graduation Banquet on June 3, aboard the Battleship New Jersey on the Camden Waterfront. The event was hosted and organized by Drs. Leonard and Tricia Gomella. In addition to a beautiful outdoor evening event, attendees had private docent tours of this historic battleship.

Our graduates were recipients of several customized mementos of the evening, including sailor hats and monogrammed life preservers. A keepsake framed SKMC photo was signed by all faculty and residents, and Dr. Tricia Gomella presented the honorees with their very own bobble heads.

Drs. Shenot and Lallas Residency Program leadership paid homage to the graduates and their time at Jefferson. Dr. Tanimoto stole the show with his own priceless “Awards” presentation to several faculty and residents (video cameras were not running and missed this!).

Our Chiefs and Fellows are on to the next phase of their professional journeys, and we wish them well.

Ryuta Tanimoto, MD, PhD, will return to his position as an Assistant Professor of Urology at Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine in Okayama, Japan, and is looking forward to reuniting with his wife and four children. He completed his third year as a fellow in the Department of Urology during the 2015-2016 academic year with the last year focusing on basic science bench work with Dr. Andrea Morrione. Dr. Michael Amirian will join the faculty at Cornell Medical College in New York and Dr. Nate Roberts will join a private practice in Virginia. Dr. Ryan Cleary will complete a fellowship in robotic surgery at Mt. Sinai in New York under Dr. Ash Tewari.

The annual Philadelphia Urologic Society Resident Essay Competition was held on Monday, April 11. Richard A. Santucci, MD, FACS, Specialist-inChief, Urology, Detroit Medical Center and Professor at Michigan State College of Medicine, served as the program judge. Participants from the following urology programs competed: Drexel, University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, Hahnemann, Temple, Commonwealth Medical College and Sidney Kimmel Medical College. Dr. Hong Truong won the Residents Essay contest for her essay: “Prevalence and characteristics of patients meeting referral criteria for genetic counseling for suspected kidney cancer syndromes based on tumor pathology.”

Collaborators on the award-winning project represented an interdisciplinary team from the Departments of Urology; Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; Medical Oncology; and the Division of Population Science, Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. The collaborators included: Sarah E. Hegarty, BA; Leonard G. Gomella, MD; Wm. Kevin Kelly, DO; Edouard J. Trabulsi, MD; Costas D. Lallas, MD; and Veda N. Giri, MD.

Dr. Victor Nitti, 2016 David M. Davis Visiting Professor The Department of Urology held the annual David M. Davis (DMD) Visiting Professorship on June 3. Victor Nitti, MD (Professor of Urology and ViceChairman of the Department of Urology, Director, Residency Program Director, Voiding Dysfunction and Female Urology), was welcomed as the DMD Visiting Professor.

Dr. Nitti attended medical school at UMDNJ and completed his residency at SUNY Brooklyn. He completed a fellowship in urodynamics and female urology at UCLA in 1992 and has

served on the faculty at UCLA and SUNY Brooklyn. Dr. Nitti joined the NYU Urology faculty in 1995 and is internationally recognized for his contributions related to the treatment of female urology, urodynamics and voiding dysfunction. He also serves as the chair of the AUA Office of Education.

The David M. Davis Professorship not only commemorates the legacy of Dr. Davis and the 112-year history of our department, but is the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating Chief Residents Drs. Mike

Amirian, Ryan Cleary and Nate Roberts, and Fellow Dr. Ryuta Tanimoto.

Dr. Nitti presented two major lectures: “Diagnosis and Treatment of Bladder Emptying Problems in Women: Obstruction vs. Detrusor Underactivity” and “Urethral Reconstruction in Women,” which included the latest scientific advances and practical applications in day-to-day care. In addition, Dr. Nitti and the residents presented challenging cases to each other in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Our Grand Rounds on Thursday, March 17, honored the “second retirement” of Dr. Leonard Frank. In 1997, Dr. Frank joined the Jefferson faculty after retiring from a successful urology practice in the Philadelphia suburbs. As a true Jeffersonian, Dr. Frank returned to his alma mater in a variety of teaching roles. Throughout the years, he has supervised the former residents’ clinic and engaged in our urology small group student discussions. He has been an extraordinary volunteer faculty contributor to our medical student learning, an experience that receives consistently high marks from our SKMC students.

Beyond personal teaching commitments, Drs. Len and Barbara Frank have been amazing philanthropic supporters of medical education. Dr.

Barbara Frank has supported the gastroenterology program at Drexel and has a teaching center there named in her honor. In 2004 as part of our Centennial Urology Celebration at Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Frank established the Jefferson Urology Museum named in his honor. The Leonard and Barbara Frank Fund supports the teaching activities of the urology residency program.

the latest edition of Campbell-Walsh Urology, a key learning resource.

Dr. Frank’s family members attending the ceremony included his son, Brad, and daughter-inlaw, Laura, with their children, Adeline and Carter. In addition, Dr. Frank’s long-standing partner in private practice, Dr. Marc Osias, attended and highlighted the many contributions of Dr. Frank to the community.

Dr. Daniel Verges is our new CR Bard Endourology/ Minimally Invasive Urologic Oncology Fellow, who matched through the Endourology Society for the academic year 2016-2017. Dr. Verges completed his medical school training at University of North Carolina and Urology Training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Dr. Mutaz K. Aljader is our new clinical research fellow. Dr. Aljader is from Amman, Jordan, and completed medical school at the Military Academy in Modena-Italy. His training included four years of general surgery with the Royal Medical Services in Jordan.

After completing a year as a visiting scholar, we are pleased to have him as a clinical research fellow with primary responsibilities for the PURC database (see page 5).

Dr. Chiara Palladino will be joining our research laboratory as a Visiting Scholar from June 1 to December 2016 under the guidance of Dr. Andrea Morrione. Dr. Palladino is a thirdyear, doctoral student in Molecular Oncology, University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro. She has been working with Dr. Belfiore, our longstanding collaborator on several projects on tyrosine-kinase receptors function in cancer. Her project will involve work on the insulin receptor action and on growth factor signaling in bladder and prostate cancer.

Dr. Hsieh’s research interests center on the mechanisms of bladder carcinogenesis with nitrosamines and inflammatory pathways.

On Friday, April 8, Dr. Hsieh received the 2016 Jefferson’s College of Biomedical Sciences’ Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Dr. Hsieh’s presentation at Grand Rounds was titled: “Frontiers in Urology: How Cystitis Ties Together Transitional Care, Global Health, and Cancer.”

In 2001, Dr. Hsieh graduated from the Dunglison Scholarship, MD/PhD Program at Thomas Jefferson University with combined degrees in medicine, microbiology and immunology. He completed his urology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, in 2007, and his fellowship in pediatric

Jefferson Raises More Than $20k for BCAN

The Department of Urology was selected as one of the JeffConnectTM award winners for the Klasko Departmental Challenge Award.

Every Urology faculty member was able to complete 12 or more scheduled telehealth visits in the past fiscal year. Otolaryngology was the other departmental award winner.

It is also acknowledged that Dr. Edouard Trabulsi was noted to be one of the top JUP physicians embracing this new initiative with 51 telehealth visits logged for the year.

Jefferson made the decision to be a leader in the telehealth space and has led the way in delivering the same high-quality care for patients, through this new medium that makes it easier for patients to access care.

In addition to the support of the institutional telehealth coordinators, our own telehealth taskmaster, John Davis, should be acknowledged for his extraordinary efforts in securing this honor to the Department.

Urology Community Outreach and Service

Kathy Burns is our new Clinical Research Coordinator replacing Christine Hubert who has assumed a new research leadership role in the Department of Medical Oncology. Kathy transferred from the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Network, where she held the position as Cancer Care Coordinator and worked with our Genitourinary Multidisciplinary Clinic for several years.

For the past 12 years, Jefferson Urology and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) have participated in the Father’s Day event for prostate cancer awareness now named in honor of Channel 6 sportscaster Gary Papa. In addition to our Team Kimmel Cancer Center, we sponsored and hosted an information tent set up to share materials about our prostate cancer programs, including the multidisciplinary clinic.

Jefferson Health featured TV spots promoting the event and the SKCC for several weeks before the event. Thanks to all our patients, friends, colleagues and students who participated in the 2016 Gary Papa Father’s Day Run to support prostate cancer research and educational programs. Special thanks to Dr. Costas Lallas who was

She has been a dedicated and loyal employee who started her urology experience at our 2501 S. Broad Street, and then worked at the 833 Chestnut Street office. All who have gotten to know her will truly miss Loretta, and her willingness to give extra effort when needed without being asked. Her rapport with her fellow employees is exemplary. On Saturday, May 14, Dr. Jean HoffmanCensits and Jefferson hosted the annual Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) event, raising more than $20,000 for the

organization. This year, we attracted more than 200 walkers to the Jefferson campus for a breakfast educational presentation on bladder cancer, and an update on the research at Jefferson.

Patients, families and friends, Jefferson urology physicians and staff, and many of our physician colleagues from Fox Chase walked from Jefferson to Independence Hall to raise bladder cancer awareness. We look forward to the 2017 BCAN walk.

The Harold Honickman Lecture in Prostate Health was established in honor of Mr. Honickman through a generous gift from his sister, Claire Reichlin, and her partner, D. Walter Cohen, DDS. Mr. Honickman and his wife, Lynne, are recognized for their many philanthropic contributions to the Delaware Valley. They are longtime friends and supporters of Jefferson, where Mr. Honickman serves on the Board of Trustees of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The fund supports an annual lecture in Thomas Jefferson University’s Department of Urology to promote prostate health.

New England Journal of Medicine and for 25 years was the editor-in-chief of Campbell’s Textbook of Urology, which has been renamed Campbell Walsh in his honor. In 1996, Dr. Walsh received the Charles F. Kettering Medal from the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation for “the most outstanding recent contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.” He has received many other high honors over his career at Hopkins.

Prior to the lecture, Dr. Walsh participated in a “meet and greet” with leaders from the SKCC prostate cancer program and several members of Jefferson’s leadership team.

The annual Harold Honickman Lecture in Prostate Health was held on Monday, April 18, in the Connelly Auditorium.

This year’s distinguished lecturer was Patrick C. Walsh, MD, University Distinguished Service Professor of Urology, The James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Department of Urology, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Dr. Walsh is renowned for his pioneering work in all aspects of prostate cancer, specifically in the development of the anatomic approach to radical prostatectomy. For 15 years, he served on the editorial board of the
