Don't know what Halloween movies to watch? Spooky or not, Ryan and Ashlynn have got you covered!

Don't know what Halloween movies to watch? Spooky or not, Ryan and Ashlynn have got you covered!

Halloweentown Scream

Halloweentown is my favorite Halloween movie of ALL TIME. I always wanted to be Marnie when I was younger, and I still want to be her now. It’s fun, funny, and such a good family movie.

10/10 Overall, 2/10 Scary Rating

-Ashlynn

Young Frankenstein

Scream is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. Scream is a classic horror film, but it can also be appealing to mystery lovers The creepy characters all always throwing you off coursebetween Billy, Stu, and Randy (with other side characters to throw you off course), you won’t be sure who the killer is until the very end The ending is great, the characters are super interesting, and the commentary on stereotypes in horror movies made me laugh throughout the film.

Young Frankenstein is a spooky, funny, and weirdly touching movie. The acting is great and casting adds an extra element of comedy. The black and white filming gives it an extra layer of spookiness, giving that old horror movie effect.

The exorcist Halloween

The Exorcist is a fantastic classic horror movie. Released nearly 49 years ago, this movie is very impressive for its time. While it might be considered basic, and might not hold up to today’s standards, it is a creepy and disturbing movie. Many consider it to be the gold standard of horror movies.

Overall: 8.5/10, Scary rating: 8/10

-Ryan

Halloween 1978 has one of the most recognizable soundtracks in horror films. It also features the original “ scream queen”, Jamie Lee Curtis. The spooky vibes of this movie were off the charts; Michael was so menacing, and his backstory of murder as a little boy made it even more so. Halloween is a classic spooky film, and it’s great for this upcoming spooky season.

7.8/10 Overall, 8/10 Scary Rating

-Ashlynn

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a horror classic, Freddy Kreuger is iconic, and it is all-around a great movie. It’s pretty stereotypical and silly, but has great practical effects and Robert Englund's performance as Freddy Kruger is fantastic. Also, it has a great ending. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a fun movie and now is the perfect time to watch it.

7.8 Overall, 6/10 Scary Rating

Nightmare on Elm Street Monster House

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a popular and classic Halloween movie. This is only my second time watching it, but it was just as boring as the first time. I know, this is a little controversial, but this movie puts me to sleep every time. The start is interesting and intriguing, but the rest only disappoints. The humor that comes from the sisters is weird and unfunny; in my opinion, the only funny characters are the cat and the zombie, Billy.

6/10 Overall, 3/10 Scary Rating

-Ashlynn

It's the great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

This Charlie Brown movie is one of my all time favorites. The fall vibes are immaculate, the music is amazon (I love Vince Guraldi), and the story is so cute. It might not be a horror movie, but it is definitely worth the watch.

9/10 Overall, 0/10 Scary Rating

-Ashlynn

Monster House is an INCREDIBLE movie that you NEED to watch. Monster House is a cinematic Gem with a unique premise and fantastic story. The characters are likable and the comedy works so well with the style of the movie. It’s one of my go-to Halloween movies that I rewatch every year. If you are looking for a fun, captivating, not-so-scary Halloween movie, then look no further than this underrated masterpiece.

Overall:10/10, Scary Rating:3/10

-Ryan

Coraline

Coraline is such a unique, wellwritten, beautiful movie. The movie's stop motion and attention to detail is incredible. The story is very captivating and unsettling. While it’s not a Halloween movie, it is still a unique and eerie movie that is definitely worth watching.

Overall:9/10 Scary Rating:3.5/10

-Ryan

Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a two day celebration of life and death. Dia de Muertos is separated into three holidays- Dia de los Angelitos (Nov 1st, 12 am), Dia de los Difuntos (Nov 2nd, 12 am), and Dia de los Muertos (Nov 2nd. Noon). The most popular ways of celebrating Dia de Muertos are calaveras (skulls), flor de muerto (marigolds), and the Ofrenda (offering). Dia de Muertos is unique because it is a celebratory honoring of the dead, unlike most American traditions.

Critique

Best Dish: Mozzarella-filled Artisan Bread dipped in a robust Italian tomato and herb sauce paired with a side of celery, cottage cheese, tomatoes, and an orange. The main dish itself was filling and satisfying, and the hearty sauce paired perfectly with the savory, salty bread bites The fruit and celery were so fresh that I would have believed you if you told me they were just picked. Kudos to the JCHS cafeteria staff!

2nd place: Rolled taquitos filled with slow-cooked, southwestern spiced chicken paired with savory steamed broccoli, a crisp fuji apple, and a viscous, refreshing, authentic tomato salsa

The contrast between the soft, tender shredded chicken and the crispy, crunchy taco shell provided me with all I needed to give this meal at least a 9/10 The only thing slightly wrong about this dish was the low portion sizes; essentially, I wanted more

3rd place: A slice of pepperoni pizza, paired with Macaroni and Cheese, chicken tenders, a breadstick, and a sparkling strawberry lemonade (Courtesy of Columbia College)

The highlight of this meal was the delectable, thirst-quenching lemonade, which nearly brought me tears Overall, however, this meal had me missing the food back home at JC.

Honorable mention: Pappo’s Pizzeria’s Brown Butter B’Day Cookie, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup.

This cookie was warm and cozy, and the nutty undertones take eater’s back to happier, simpler times. Ice cream to cookie ratio was a little high for my taste.

October is Filipino-American History Month, so there is no better time to recognize and analyze the national flag of the Philippines! To start, the stripe of royal blue on the upper side of the flag represents peace, truth, and justice The red stripe below it symbolizes valor, and the blood sacrificed by the first 8 provinces of the Philippines for independence from Spanish colonization A white equilateral triangle is formed on the left side of the flag, representing equality. A star is formed at each vertice, each meant to symbolize the 3 main islands of the Philippines at the time. Finally, a sun is placed in the center of the triangle, with 8 sunrays being emitted from it. This represents the independence of the 8 provinces. FUN FACT: When flown upside-down, the flag conveys that the Philippines is in a state of war

This feature is unique to the Philippines and its flag

Jami Wade is a 1988 JCHS graduate She was a member of Student Council and she was the Exchange Editor for the Red & Black (R&B) paper The Exchange Editor’s job was to send the current R&B issue to former R&B members. Wade says one fun memory from the R&B was selling the papers “We would dress up in wild costumes and post on all the stairwells in the building and literally Hawk the paper ”

Wade’s favorite teacher was Mrs Hendrikson who taught English Composition and a class that is no longer offered at JC called the Bible as Literature. Wade expresses how well those classes prepared her for college. She credits most of this success to her former teacher, Mrs Hendrikson

Wade says that some of her favorite memories from high school are when JC hosted MSCA “[we] got to have a dance in the Capitol Rotunda with all of the visiting students from across the state...that was pretty special” Wade says.
