What is your favorite winter activity?
I like to build snowmen with my sister and dad. Do you want to build a snowman? I love ice skating, sledding, or cozying up with a good book! I LOVE snowmen, hot chocolate, and sitting in the car with my friends while it’s snowing outside.
I love sleeping in on snow days, hot chocolate, and going on walks in the snow. Curling up near a fireplace while reading but actually watching Netflix. I love drinking hot coco, wearing my fuzzy socks, and reading a good fantasy or romance book! I love staying in and watching the snow, and playing video games with my friends!!! I love to have snowball fights and go ice skating (even though I’m awful at it). I like to crochet, read, and drink hot lattes by a window with a cat!

Martin Luther King Day JR
The importance of mlk day
Every third Monday in January The United States honors one of the most influential figures in modern history: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Known as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this holiday is more than a day off of work or school. It’s a day to remember and reflect upon the profound impact of Dr. King’s efforts in advancing civil rights and social justice. This day is a reminder of the power of nonviolent activism, the importance of equality, and the ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. Dr. Kings vison was not
limited to just the eradication of racial segregation, but for the pursuit of equality of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. Dr. King continues to inspire people to pursue a more just and equal society
to this day. Martin Luther King Jr. Day serves as a reminder of the enduring power of hope, resilience, and courage in the face of adversity. It honors a man who dreamt of a better world, and inspired others to join him in the pursuit of that world.
Our Red and Black Staff's favorite/recommended movies from 2023!
Oppenheimer
This movie is OVERRATED to the MAX. I get that it's some revolutionary film, and the way it was filmed was cool. Oppenheimer as a person is not a good muse for a film, or anything in general. He's a horrible person, not just because he created the atomic bomb. Also, it doesn't even show the dropping of the bomb's in the movie, so there is almost zero representation of his moral struggle. -Ashlynn
Barbie
Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse
Saltburn
This has got to be my favorite movie of the year. All of the characters were amazing and so well written, and their interactions kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire movie. The animation is amazing, and all the different art styles adapted for the characters was great. The story line ties in perfectly with the first movie, and The Spot even scared me at times. The only bad thing I have to say is that the third one isn't coming out sooner. -Ashlynn
Saltburn was a masterpiece of not only cinematography, but underlying plot as well. The initial “eat the rich” storyline soon turned into a critic on every level of social class in society. The directing choices were immaculate and the cast did a phenomenal job portraying the flaws represented in each character.
Barbie is such a good movie. The sets are amazing, the colors are amazing, and the actors are SO GOOD. It's really good at explaining and showing the struggle that women go through. It was an emotional movie, but not so heartbreaking that I couldn't also enjoy the fun parts. Also I love Michael Cera. -Ashlynn
Trolls Band Together We do it better we do it better yeah and I don’t mind if the world spins faster the music’s louder the waves get stronger I don’t mind if the world spins faster faster faster just let me take you to a better place. -Riya
Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
This new Hunger Games movie was the perfect addition to the original trilogy(book)/quartet (movies). The casting was phenomenal and each character felt very real. The story was sweet, scary, and cruel all at once, not to mention the music and singing was amazing. Rachel Zegler has a beautiful voice filled with emotion that she displayed during the movie with the several songs she sings. - Kyra I wish that they could have portrayed more of Snow's corrupt morality in the movie, instead of just his love. This under-representation always happens in books to movie adaptations, so overall it was a great watch. -Ashlynn
Asteroid City
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
Asteroid City was an interesting movie that follows two parallel storylines. It opens with the making of the play Asteroid City in black and white, yet with passionate and vivid actors playing the characters. Then, the movie switches to color, but the characters are apathetic and drab. The juxtaposition of grayscale and color, of emotion and apathy, makes for a very striking film. In addition, it's directed by the famous Wes Anderson, and his style is very prevalent in this film. I loved the all-star cast, with actors like Scarlett Johansson, Steve Carell, and Maya Hawke. However, the storyline was a bit confusing at points and there wasn't an obvious overlying theme. Overall, Asteroid City was a visually compelling film with a great cast, but it isn't one to watch for a brain break. -Chloe
The Eras Tour is a great movie for Taylor Swift fans. It's not really a movie with a classic story line, or even a documentary style, but it was still an enjoyable watch. If you enjoy having movies or shows on in the background while you're doing other things, it's a great film that you don't have to follow along with. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Missing -Ashlynn Missing is a thriller: and let me tell you, I The third movie was a great installment was THRILLED! I don't want to spoil it for to this series. It was funny but also very you, because it is a MUST WATCH, but just sad and traumatic. I loved the action know: trust no one. The twists and turns parts of it and I loved seeing all my this movie takes are original and fresh, favorite characters again and seeing how and so is the unique filming format. Put they changed and grew over the course this on your movie queue, but make sure of this series. While the ending made me your doors are locked before you watch sad I do believe it was the right ending because you will be sleeping with your for the story. -Kyra lights on when you're done. -Chloe
"Working on the Cross Country team's float was so much fun! We won best float in the parade and had a lot of fun." -Senior Adelaide Jones "My favorite moment of the fall semester was definitely my first homecoming. I’ve always loved playing dress-up, and homecoming was no different!! I had such an amazing time! It was definitely a magical experience." -Freshman Sophia Wormington "Homecoming because it was a chance to hang out with friends for most of the night. I got to make lots of memories including playing cards. I like being able to get into cute dresses. The music could be better, but overall homecoming is a good time." -Sophomore Alex Light

GROUNDHOG DAY What is Groundhog Day? By Brier Aulbur
Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated by people in the United States and Canada every February 2nd. On this holiday, about 25,000 people come to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to get a glimpse of the famous groundhog, and millions of people watch the event on TV. It is a Pennsylvania-German custom from the 18th and 19th centuries. Those who watch are all looking for one thing, whether the groundhog will see its shadow or not. It is said that if the animal sees its shadow then there will be 6 more weeks of winter. But, if not, then spring will come early.
Are you hoping for an early spring?
NEW YEAR, The importance of self-acceptance in order to foster self-improvement By Ashlynn WIlliams
“No amount of self-improvement can make up for any lack of self-acceptance.” -Robert Holden Recently, our world has been focused on self-improvement, whether that be going to the gym, starting a new skincare routine, or trying to drink more kombucha. However, selfimprovement is not always the best thing. Especially during the new year, the idea of self improvement can take over a person's life. But in reality, the thing we should be focusing on is self-acceptance. Being able to accept you for you is the ultimate form of selfimprovement. It's easy to point out all of the flaws in yourself, but it's much, much harder to acknowledge your strengths. Pointing out the good things about yourself can be a great way to start the path of self-improvement. In order to "improve" yourself, you have to first find out what you're good at. When you find your attributes, It is easier to make attainable goals based on the things that you're good at. Always remember to embrace yourself, and to not focus too much on how you can be better. Self-improvement can be a great thing, but only when setting realistic goals that help you, and not hurt you, in the long run.

Red & Black's new advice column with Brier + Chloe
Dear Brier & Chloe, how do I make 2024 my best year yet? Chloe: My advice for you is to begin building good habits and routines. Having these good habits set in place wil replace not-so-good ones. Having a great morning, workout, or night routine wil make sure you keep those good habits even if you are not feeling too motivated that day! Good luck!
Brier: My advice for the beginning of your best year is to manage your school, home, and work-life in efficient ways. Of course, it's easier said than done, but one of my favorite ways to start is by having a planner. Scheduling things out for the entire year can help take off the initial stress of it all.
