A SINGULAR SEASON

There are some very rewarding efforts that come with booking a season following a lengthy hiatus, when artists and patrons alike are deeply yearning for live performances. We are very excited with the lineup we have been able to pull together for Roanoke and all our neighbors.

We have up-and-coming powerhouses like Violet Bell, well-revered artists like Loudon Wainwright III, and big names like Punch Brothers filling our halls this year. As you look at our calendar, you’ll see there are a lot of special nights to look forward to.

CROCE PLAYS CROCE A.J. Croce performs Croce Plays Croce, a special night of music featuring a complete set of classics by his late father Jim Croce, some of his own tunes, and songs that influenced both him and his father. This special event features such timeless songs as “Operator,” “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” “Time in a Bottle,” (a song written for A.J.), “Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy),” and “Lover’s Cross,” to name a few. MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO Meshell Ndegeocello has survived the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer. She eschewed genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musical trends for musical truths. Fans have come to expect the unexpected and follow her on sojourns into soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and rock, all bound by the search for love, justice, respect, and resolution.

Those sonic investigations have defied and redefined the expectations for women, for queer artists, and for black music for over 30 years, and she remains one of few women who write the music, sing the songs, and lead the band. A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her warm, fat, and melodic groove to everything she does.

JAVON JACKSON WITH NIKKI GIOVANNI

Javon Jackson has a lengthy history as a leathery-toned and warm tenor-sax man, yet it’s his role as an educator that steered him toward the hymnal, holy roll of his newest album. As faculty at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford and director of its Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Jackson invited Nikki Giovanni to speak to his classes. Her work lit a fire in the saxophonist, prompting him to ask the poet to curate an album of her most deeply revered gospel hymns.

Giovanni — the poet, the activist, the muse — and Jackson — the educator, the quartet leader, the saxophonist — both bring a deep sense of history to go with this fresh association on Bible verse.

Jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch and jazz vocalist esperanza spalding celebrate the release of their album Alive at the Village Vanguard, recorded at the legendary club for a packed and rapturous audience. Fifteen-time Grammy nominee Hersch, called by The New Yorker “a living legend”— and multiple Grammy winner spalding, whom NPR cites as “the 21st century’s first jazz genius”—present an evening of songs from the Great American Songbook, music from Brazil and jazz compositions, including several penned by Hersch. The remarkable chemistry of Hersch and spalding’s partnership is deep, truly exhilarating and not to be missed.

IMMANUEL WILKINS The music of saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins is filled with empathy and conviction, bonding arcs of melody and lamentation to pluming gestures of space and breath. Listeners were introduced to this riveting sound with his acclaimed debut album Omega, which was named the #1 Jazz Album of 2020 by The New York Times. The album also introduced his remarkable quartet with Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass, and Kweku Sumbry on drums, a tight-knit unit that Wilkins features once again on his stunning sophomore album The 7th Hand.

LENNY MARCUS TRIO

Lenny Marcus hails from Washington, DC, but studied, performed and recorded for many years in New Orleans, LA, before relocating to Roanoke, VA. His music ranges from modern, contemporary upbeat jazz to a more meditative, contemplative approach and has been featured on NPR’s All that Jazz and ALL Songs Considered. Lenny is a highly trained jazz pianist who also plays flute and adds vocals.

His compositions are refreshing and uplifting, and he has been compared to Vince Guaraldi, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, a Mose Allison-type vocal style, Ray Bryant, and many others.

GODWIN LOUIS

Godwin Louis, alto saxophonist, was born in Harlem, New York and began playing saxophone at age nine and went on to be a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Saxophone Competition. He has performed as a sideman and guest soloist and has conducted clinics and master classes worldwide. As a composer, Godwin has received the Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Grant and the Jazz Gallery’s “New Works Commission.” As an educator, humanitarian and ambassador, Godwin has traveled from Benin to China to help promote cross-cultural understanding and introduce thousands to America’s indigenous art form through public concerts, master classes, and jam sessions.

GOLDINGS, BERNSTEIN, STEWART TRIO In the mid-1990s, The New York Times described Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart as “the best organ trio of the last decade.” The trio, which has now been together for over 30 years, has been recognized for charting new ground with its synergistic playing and thoughtful music. They have over a dozen recordings, all of which display their distinctive sound, whether exploring the depths of jazz standards or playing their own original compositions.

CAMILLE THURMAN Remember the name Camille Thurman. As a composer, multiinstrumentalist, vocalist, and unique interpreter of the jazz tradition, she is quickly becoming one of the standard bearers for the form, making a considerable and dynamic contribution to the legacy of jazz while paying tribute to its heroes.

Fluid and powerful on the tenor saxophone and highly inventive as a vocalist, she also plays bass clarinet, flute, and piccolo.

Her rich sax sound has been compared to Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon, while her vocal approach—including an impressive scatting ability—has been classified alongside those of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter.

Maria Bamford is revered for her deeply personal and experimental comedy about mental illness. She starred in the surreal, semiautobiographical Netflix comedy series Lady Dynamite, about a comedian who suffers a nervous breakdown, and is the star of three unconventional hour-long stand-up specials: Weakness Is the Brand, Old Baby and Maria Bamford: the Special, Special, Special!

Maria was the first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the Comedy Central series The Comedians of Comedy and Netflix’s Comedians of Comedy: The Movie. She also created and starred in the cult hit web series The Maria Bamford Show, in which she plays all the characters.

Bold and startling, the guitars pushed forward and her voice – equal parts husky knowing, brassy want and innocence – signaled a deeper connection to the faltering places, desires torn open and the willingness to wrap mental health, drinking and its fallout, even drugs into her unfaltering merge of Tom Petty-esque lean rock, classic country acoustic guitars, a beat that means business and sweeping melodies that pull listeners into the songs.

Multiple Grammy Award winner Shaun Martin is well known for his work with Kirk Franklin and as a key member of Snarky Puppy. His creative stamp can be heard on projects with musical legends Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Fred Hammond, Tamela Mann, Kim Burrell, God’s Property, and more.

Twin brothers Christian and Christopher have been crafting infectious grooves and melodies for many lifetimes. This time around they do it together, known as The PRVLG, with drums, bass, and vocals; creating a sound familiar to Bruno Mars, Prince, Anderson Paak, and Charlie Puth.

Born in Memphis, TN, The PRVLG has collaborated with Cory Henry, Ebonie Smith, Celisse, and more.

KCL developed a thoroughly original style of interactive group improvisation inspired in part by the great Miles Davis Quintet of the ‘60s but played out in spontaneously generated contexts of heavy funk, rock, and electronica instead of straight-ahead swing.

As other instrumental bands of the day dabbled in derivative fusion and retro-jazz, KCL became an underground phenomenon, cultivating an international following of devoted fans of every stripe looking for an alternative creative music that served the mind, body, and spirit. Relentlessly grooving, always innovative, never complacent – KCL makes contemporary music that resonates beyond category.

Tuba Skinny started out as a busking band playing early jazz in the streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter neighborhood. While they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz, they have not limited their choice of material solely to what is offered in the traditional jazz repertoire.

All Jefferson Center Presents sales are final. Tickets that will not be used by a patron may be returned to the Jefferson Center Box Office as a gift which can be re-sold at the discretion of the Box Office. If a concert is rescheduled by an artist, patrons may receive a refund for their ticket if they are not able to attend the concert on the rescheduled show date.
