GAME NOTES ABOUT THE RAIDERS: Northwestern comes in the weekend series with an 8-12 record in the GPAC. Their last time out, they took down No. 22-ranked Concordia in the finale of their four-game series. They defeated the Bulldogs 4-3 in 11 innings at home. They battled back from three runs and won on a walk-off single. The Raiders are led by Brian Wede in his 15th season in the dugout. Dylan Kirkeby is the ace on the mound with a 3.14 ERA and 45 strikeouts. At the plate, Sutton Derr leads the team in average (.333) and hits (43). SERIES TREND: Dating back to the 2018 season, Northwestern holds an 8-3 record in the series. In addition to their four-game regular season series, the Warriors and Raiders have met three times in the past two GPAC Postseason Tournaments. In 2018 they met in the GPAC Championship Game, with Northwestern winning 2-1. The Raiders won twice in the 2019 postseason tournament in Jamestown. VETERANS ON THE MOUND: Midland has relied on a rotation of upperclassmen this year on the mound. Seniors Matt Abdelnour, Brendon Jones, James Scurto, Tyler Seebaum, and junior Steven Boyd have combined for 253.1 innings of work, or 79% of the workload, for the Warriors this season. Starters Boyd, Jones, Seebaum, and Scurto have 15 of the teams’ 16 wins on the year while Abdelnour leads the team with 3 saves.
HOME SWEET HOME: Under Coach Miller, Midland has compiled a 74-46 record in games played inside Moller Field. The home ballpark of the Warriors underwent a few updates following the 2019 season. A new set of bleachers above the home dugout was put in, an updated screen behind home plate was installed, and foul territory was reduced to bring the fans close to the field. The renovations did not change any of the field’s dimensions. It is 325’ down the right field line, 385’ to centerfield, and 300’ down the left field line. Despite a 22’ high fence, many home run balls still land in the lumberyard beyond left field. LOOKING AHEAD: Midland and Northwestern will be back at it on Saturday afternoon as they play another doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 4:00 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa. Next week the Warriors will complete the regular season with a similar schedule with Dordt University. The Defenders will host Midland on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and then the teams will wrap up their regular seasons with a doubleheader at Moller Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day as we honor the Class of 2021.
