GPAC STANDINGS: Midland (9-5) enters play today tied for second in the GPAC race, one game behind Concordia (10-4). Northwestern (5-9) is currently tied for the eighth and final conference tournament spot with Dordt. There are just three games of separation from the top spot and the current five seed. MU has 14 GPAC games remaining this season including today’s contests. SEEING RED: Only two GPAC teams own a winning record against Midland over the past 10 years; Doane University and Northwestern College. The Red Raiders are 19-7 against the Warriors dating back to the 2007 campaign. However, Midland holds a 5-1 record against Northwestern over the last two seasons. Northwestern enters the day ranked fourth in the GPAC this season in team batting average (.295) and seventh in ERA (6.56). The Red Raiders are tied for fifth with Midland in team fielding percentage (.952).Isaac Horigan is Northwestern’s ace on the mound with a 5-3 record and 3.35 (19 ER/51.0 IP) in eight starts. AJ Nitzschke is among the Red Raiders’ leaders in most offensive categories this year (.361/4 HR/24 RBI). A WINNING TRADITION: No other team in the GPAC has accumulated more total wins than the Midland University Warriors over the four seasons. Since the 2013 campaign, the Warriors owns a 145-91-1 (.598) record, have appeared at Nationals three times, made it to the conference postseason championship four times, won one regular season crown (2016) and one postseason title (2014). NO POWER SHORTAGE: The 2016 Warrior squad set team records for runs scored (510), hits (655), homers (85) and total bases (1,049). Midland graduated a handful of prestigious power hitters from that lineup, including All-American Dylan Steyer, but has continued to show a powerful lineup this season. The Warriors enter the day sixth in the NAIA in slugging percentage (.565) and 10th in team batting average (.344). Midland also ranks 13th in the country with over one home run per game this season. MU launched 14 home runs in last weekend’s four-game series against Briar Cliff. The Warriors lead the GPAC in team batting average, slugging and runs scored. THE KILLER B’S: Buddy Balsino, Tanner Bos and the aptly named, Alex Bee have accounted for the bulk of Midland’s offensive production this season. Bos, of no relation to Northwestern’s SID – Matt Bos, leads the Warriors with eight homers and 29 RBI. Balsino and Bee, along with Anthony Virgen, have each recorded 28 RBI on the year. Balsino is second on the team with seven round-trippers. CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Midland centerfielder Cole Gray is in his final season with the Warriors. The four-year starter scored eight runs last week to become the program’s all-time leader in runs scored (196), passing former teammate Dylan Steyer. Gray enters the day ranked second all-time in at-bats (696), hits (247) and doubles (58); trailing Steyer in each categories. Gray also ranks fourth in RBI (138), and fifth in stolen bases (44) and career batting average (.355). The 2016 Academic All-American also leads the GPAC with a .406 batting average this year. His 18 doubles on the season rank sixth in the NAIA. ACES WILD: Midland’s top two arms in the rotation this season are among the GPAC leaders in several statistical categories and have yet to suffer a loss. Torrey Escamilla (8-0) leads the conference and ranks fourth nationally in wins. The Fremont native also ranks second in the GPAC in innings pitched (52.0) and strikeouts (52) while ranking ninth in ERA (3.46). The reigning GPAC Pitcher of the Year, Kiefer Musiel (6-0) is tied with Escamilla with 52 punchouts. He currently ranks sixth in the conference in both innings pitched (49.2) and ERA (3.08). However, the duo has struggled in four combined appearances against Northwestern and enters the day at 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA (9 ER/9.0 IP) against the Red Raiders. Midland leads the GPAC this season with a 3.69 team ERA.
