From the Alumni Association President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of KCD, It is my pleasure to write you my first Connections letter as alumni board president. I am honored to accept this role, as I am a proud graduate of the class of 1980 as well as a parent to Catherine (grade six), Elizabeth (grade four), and Alexandra (grade four). I could not begin this letter without giving many thanks and much appreciation to my fellow classmate, Jana Clanton Dowds ’80, who stepped down after four years of service as alumni board vice president and president. Jana, thank you for all you have done for KCD these past few years. The Alumni Board and Kentucky Country Day as a whole are better because of your service and hard work. It am also thrilled that Pai Charasika ’94 has accepted the role of alumni board vice president. If you have not had the pleasure of meeting Pai, then I suggest you do! He is a vibrant and enthusiastic young man who will add a great dynamic to our Alumni Association. It is hard to believe we are in our 36th year as Kentucky Country Day School! It was wonderful to see so many alumni come out last year to our 35th Anniversary parties, from the alumni family tailgate in October to the golf outing and BBQ party in June. It was evident that all the alumni were impressed with the school’s continual growth and development. The party at Ted (KCD ’86) and Elizabeth Mitzlaff’s home in February to honor our predecessor school alumni was truly a highlight in our school’s history. Over 150 alumni of Aquinas Prep, Kentucky Home School, Kentucky Military Institute, and Louisville Country Day gathered together on a cold night in February to catch up with friends and classmates. We even had a few alumni who traveled to Louisville for the party from as far away as Virginia! I am very pleased to announce that we will have another alumni party this year on February 7, 2009, at the home of Fred (KCD ’70) and Julie Davis. Fred and Julie had such fun at the Mitzlaff’s last year that they have offered their home for the party in ’09! The wonderful news is that we will invite the alumni of all the predecessor schools as well as the alumni of KCD. It is guaranteed to be a special and memorable night, and I hope to see many of you there! It is with great excitement that I announce the success of our first year of KCD Reconnect. KCD Reconnect is an internship program for KCD’s young alumni that was developed under the leadership of Jana Dowds ’80. We placed twelve young alums last summer, and you can read about their summer experiences on page 26. KCD Reconnect will continue to offer internships for the summer of 2009 as well. Please contact Mollie Mulloy, director of alumni relations, for more information on our program. As always, please continue to keep in touch with us! KCD has launched a new online alumni directory called My Backpack. This system is wonderful and easy to use. Please visit www.kcd.org and click on My Backpack to update your alumni class notes, address changes, etc. You can also search for other alumni and members of your class, as well as donate online to the KCD Fund. User names and passwords were mailed out this fall. Please contact the Alumni Office at KCD if you need assistance logging into the system. We hope you find this tool useful and helpful! In closing, I want to remind you that Kentucky Country Day is a special place. It has offered so much to me as well as to my children, and I am sure many of you feel the same way. We are all so fortunate to be a part of it. As you consider the opportunities that have been given to you, as well as the relationships you have made this holiday season, I am sure many of you will trace these opportunities and relationships back to Kentucky Country Day. From the Head of School Dear KCD Alumni, Parents, and Friends, I once attended a conference session where a speaker presented the results of a survey in which independent school parents were asked to identify the most important characteristics of a successful school. The most important quality, he informed us, was innovation. And the second? Tradition. Balancing innovation and tradition in a school environment is a challenging task, but it is also an essential one. At KCD, we have been extremely successful at embracing innovation while remaining true to the traditions of our history. Over the last five years, KCD has emerged as a regional leader in integrating innovative technology with classroom instruction. We have launched a successful upper school laptop program that has served as a model for other schools. We have installed Smart Boards in every classroom, effectively replacing the traditional whiteboard with a fully interactive touchscreen device that integrates multimedia tools and all the resources of the World Wide Web. Students in the middle school are engaging in collaborative learning projects through class blogs and wikis. This year, we have introduced yet another exciting piece of technology: handheld interactive devices that allow teachers to instantly assess student comprehension and tailor their lesson plans accordingly. Our commitment to innovation, however, is not limited to technology. In 2005, the National Association of Independent Schools presented us with the Leading Edge Award for curriculum innovation because of our unique upper school philanthropy class. Our upper school English curriculum has expanded to include two classes in African literature (with plans to expand our offerings to Arabic and Pakistani literature), and our ninth grade history curriculum has expanded its focus from European to world history. Earlier this year, the Lower School introduced an exciting new unit on the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead that combines an interdisciplinary approach with a multicultural perspective. Why do we innovate? Because if we don’t, then we will not be living up to our responsibility to prepare our students for life in the twenty-first century. The world we now inhabit requires students and leaders who are not only familiar with technology, but are also comfortable using technology creatively to find new ways to communicate, interact, and solve problems. It requires students and leaders who have learned to value and respect the diverse cultures and beliefs of a truly global community. At KCD, we innovate because we are committed to preparing students to be leaders in a world that is constantly changing. At the same time, we must ensure that innovation makes a real and meaningful contribution to learning. As we innovate, we must ensure that it takes place within the context of the traditions that have always made KCD great: outstanding teachers who model and encourage excellence, small classes that build strong student-teacher relationships, and a commitment to providing students with numerous opportunities to expand and explore their interests. At KCD, I believe that we have truly found a way to have the best of both worlds: innovation and tradition. As we look toward the future, I am confident that we will continue to be successful in preparing our students to become the leaders of their generation. From the Board Chair Dear Parents, Friends, and Alumni of KCD, On behalf of the board of trustees, I am pleased to report that 2007–08 was an outstanding period of achievement for Kentucky Country Day. Schools today face the challenge of equipping students to compete and to succeed in a global environment that is growing increasingly complex. That we are meeting this challenge with resounding success is borne out not only by the objective measures listed below, but also by the testimonials of the alumni that fill this magazine. As the demands of the global community become increasingly competitive and complex, the mission of a nationally-recognized independent school such as KCD plays a crucial role, not only for our own students and parents, but also for the Louisville community. Looking back over the 2007–2008 school year, we have seen continued development and growth in nearly every area of the school. Please consider the following:
Academic Excellence
KCD is well known for fostering academic excellence, especially when it comes to preparing students for the demands and rigor of college and a basis for the skills necessary to succeed in life. More specifically: • Our students’ performance on standardized achievement tests for college admission has remained substantially above national averages. In the prior year, KCD’s ACT scores were the highest of those reported by the Courier Journal. This year, KCD’s composite ACT and SAT scores were among the highest reported by Business First. • The College Board recognized twenty-seven upper school students for exceptional performance on last year’s AP exams, including naming thirteen as Scholars With Distinction and one as National Scholar. • In 2008, 73% of graduating seniors reported that they had been offered admission to their first choice college or university. • Our students continued to be admitted to the nation’s most selective colleges and universities, including (in 2008) Columbia, Davidson, Emory, Georgetown, Princeton, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Washington, Washington & Lee, and Yale, among others. • In 2008, six seniors (9% of the class) were recognized as National Merit Finalists—a percentage well above that of other area schools. • 52% of graduating seniors from the class of 2008 received offers of merit-based scholarship totaling nearly $2.5 million.
Record Enrollment
Enrollment once again reached a record level in 2007–2008, making this the fifth consecutive year that the school has enjoyed continued growth. Enrollment at the beginning of the school year was 902, compared to 885 at the same time last year. This continued growth in the student body is the best indicator that there is strong interest in KCD from new families and that existing families have a high level of satisfaction with the school.
Broad Participation and High Achievement
One of the hallmarks of a KCD education continues to be an environment of broad participation. In 2007–2008, • The Upper School offered twenty-two clubs and organizations, and the Middle School offered sixteen. In the Lower School, a record number of students were involved in intramural athletics, after school programs, and the Young Strings program. Cont’d on page 4
From the Board Chair Cont’d from page 3 • It was a particularly successful year for our speech, chess, and academic teams, all of whom achieved notable results in regional, state, and even national competitions. • Together, the Upper and Middle Schools offered a total of over sixty athletic teams with nearly 950 participants—many playing on two or more teams. Athletic distinctions were earned by the varsity girls’ lacrosse team (state champions), the varsity boys’ soccer team (Class A state champions), the varsity boys’ tennis team (regional champions and state runners-up), and the varsity field hockey team (district champions and state runners-up). In addition, league or tournament championships were won by the middle school baseball team, the 7/8 boys’ lacrosse team, and the middle school soccer team. • Upper school productions of A Christmas Carol and Oklahoma! along with the middle school productions of Charlotte’s Web and High School Musical continued to set a benchmark for dramatic quality and involved record numbers of participants.
Expanding Opportunities
As always, KCD remains committed to offering opportunities outside the confines of the classroom. Listed below are just a few of the notable programs introduced during the last school year: • In January of 2008, the Parent Association sponsored a very well-received community lecture by bestselling author and noted child psychologist Dan Kindlon. • At the conclusion of the 2008 school year, the KCD Internship program provided a dozen upper school students with summer internships locally as well as internationally, including internships in England, Panama, and the Philippines. • Also in January of 2008, KCD became the first area school to host a conference for students of color. The event drew over 100 attendees, many of whom traveled from out of state. • The Fort Campbell project involved every grade level in a yearlong service learning project in support of U. S. soldiers and their families.
The Future
As we move ahead, we will continue to build upon these successes and accomplishments. The school is thriving, and there are bold
plans in place for the future. It is important for everyone to know that KCD offers an education and curriculum addressing the skills required in the twenty-first century, including: • Cross-disciplinary knowledge • Communication skills • Teamwork • Analytical reasoning • Real world problem-solving skills • Creativity and innovation • Self-discipline and organization to manage one’s own work and drive it to successful conclusion • Leadership • Ethical behavior In order to enable each student to learn and succeed, it is important that KCD as an institution has the necessary attributes and characteristics to fulfill it mission, including: • Employing high-quality teachers • Maintaining excellence in academic programming • Preparing students academically for college, starting in the Lower School • Keeping students motivated and enthusiastic about learning • Supporting a climate that says it’s okay to study and excel • Using technology • Providing a safe environment • Preventing drug and alcohol abuse • Preparing students for life and a career in a global economy These are exciting and challenging times. We will not lose our focus on the importance of preparing the students of KCD for success in an ever-changing world. On behalf of the entire board of trustees, I thank for your interest and support. Meet the Board of Trustees Like all independent schools, Kentucky Country Day is governed by a board of trustees
that provides the school with policy formation, leadership, and oversight. While the management of the school is the responsibility of the head of school and the administrative team, the board is responsible for long-term strategic planning and leading fund-raising efforts on behalf of the school. Board members also sit on committees with a particular focus, such as the diversity task force, the development committee, or the finance committee. The future of KCD will be in large part a result of the vision and foresight of today’s board of trustees. With that in mind, we are fortunate to have such a talented and diverse group of individuals who have committed themselves to building an exceptional future for Kentucky Country Day.
Officers Scott C. Ferguson, chair Scott Ferguson is an owner of Underwriter Safety & Claims, Inc. (US&C) and Bluegrass Health Network, Inc. (BHN). He has served as an executive vice president of US&C since 1989 and president of BHN since 1994. Prior to joining US&C in 1984, Mr. Ferguson worked with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Ferguson was elected to the KCD board of trustees during the 2004 school year and has served in a variety of positions, including chair of the strategic planning committee, as a member of the finance and investment committees, chair of the facilities task force, and chair of the planned giving task force. He is currently chair of the board and a member of the executive committee. Mr. Ferguson has served on the board and committees of several industryrelated organizations. Mr. Ferguson has also served on the board, executive committee, as treasurer, and chaired the finance and administration committee on behalf of the Metro United Way. He has served on the board, executive committee, and finance committee of the Community Foundation of Louisville. Currently, Mr. Ferguson serves on the board of the Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America, on the University of Louisville Board of Overseers, and on the Louisville Orchestra Foundation Board. Mr. Ferguson holds a degree from the University of Georgia. He and his wife Jane have two sons: Colin ’16 and Mac ’12. B. Anthony Weber ’77, vice chair B. Anthony (Tony) Weber ’77 is co-founder and principal member of Veredus Asset Management, LLC, and has served as its president and chief investment officer since its founding in 1998. Prior to founding Veredus, Mr. Weber was president and senior portfolio manager for SMC Capital in Louisville from 1993– 1998 and vice president and portfolio manager for Shelby County Trust Bank from 1989–1993. His career started in 1981 at First Kentucky Trust Company, followed by 6½ years at Fred Alger Management on Wall Street in New York. Mr. Weber was elected to the KCD board of trustees during the 2003 school year and has served on a variety of committees, including the extracurricular committee, finance and nominating committees, and chair of the technology task force. In addition, he is on the board of trustees for the Meredith Dunn Learning Center. Mr. Weber holds a B.A. in economics from Centre College. He and his wife Leslie have two daughters: Alex ’07 and Samantha ’11.

Meet the Board of Trustees Douglas P. Sumner, treasurer Douglas P. Sumner is a co-founder of the Connected Learning Network, where he serves as chair of its board of directors. Mr. Sumner has served as the treasurer of KCD since his election to the board in 2004. His other civic involvement include serving as treasurer and a board member of Metro United Way and as chair of the board of WKPC-TV. He is also a past president of the Kentucky Society of CPAs and has served on the Governing Council of the American Institute of CPAs. Mr. Sumner has served on the boards of Brescia College, the Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the predecessor agency of the Partnership for Greater Louisville. Mr. Sumner and his wife Tassie have four children, all of whom are KCD alumni: Austin ’98, Morgan ’00, McCauley ’02, and Bennett ’05. Mary Barrazotto, secretary Mary E. Barrazotto is vice president and associate general counsel for Brown-Forman Corporation, where she has responsibility for regulatory compliance and global marketing review. Ms. Barrazotto joined Brown-Forman in 1990 after practicing with Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs for four years. Ms. Barrazotto joined the KCD board of trustees in 2007 and currently serves as secretary as well as chair of the Endowment Committee. In addition, she currently serves on the boards of Maryhurst, Public Radio Partnership, and the Louisville Bar Foundation. Ms. Barrazotto served on the board of Metro United Way for over ten years, including two years as chair. She is a past president of the Louisville Bar Association. Ms. Barrazotto graduated from the University of Virginia in 1982 and earned her J.D. degree from the University of Louisville in 1986. She and her husband, Louis Waterman, have two children, Mark and Kate. Kate is a member of the KCD class of 2013.
Board Members Terri Allen Terri Allen, CFA, is a co-founder of Meridian Realty Investments and serves on its Investment Committee. She has twenty-four years experience in financing, underwriting, and acquiring commercial real estate on a national basis. Since co-founding Meridian Realty in 1997, Ms. Allen has completed roughly $1 billion of real estate transactions including $500 million of direct commercial property acquisitions on behalf of investors. Prior to 1997, Terri served thirteen years with Providian Corporation’s Real Estate Group. Terri earned a B.B.A. degree from Eastern Kentucky University and an M.B.A. from Bellarmine University. She holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Louisville. She is married to John Boc and has a son, Sam, who is a member of the KCD class of 2015. LouAnn Atlas ’78 LouAnn Atlas has over twenty years experience in banking and trust. She joined Fifth Third Bank’s Investment Advisors division in August of 1997, and her current responsibilities include managing Charitable Management Services. A 1994 graduate of Leadership Louisville, Ms. Atlas is active on numerous community boards and committees, including the Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy. She was recently appointed as chair of the board of trustees for Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Health Care. LouAnn is a 1978 graduate of KCD and earned a B.A. from Tulane University and an M.B.A. from the University of Louisville. She is married to Ryan Coady and is the proud aunt of Maggie Rosen ’14 and Lindsay Rosen ’16. Mark Blieden ’78 Mark Blieden is currently the president of Kaden Companies, a commercial real estate development firm. A partial list of his professional and civic activities includes serving as past president of the Louisville Chapter of Building Owners and Managers Association, a member of the International Council on Shopping Centers, a six-year member of the board of trustees of The Temple, and a member of the KCD alumni board. Mr. Blieden has been a member of the KCD board since 2003. He has served on various committees, the most recent being the construction task force. Mark is a 1978 graduate of KCD. He and his wife Susan have three children: Joanna ’11; Alexander ’08, a freshman at the University of Rochester; and Samantha ’06, a junior at Boston University.

Meet the Board of Trustees Todd Blue Todd Blue co-founded Cobalt Ventures in 1998 and is currently responsible for the business’ development and strategic direction. Previously, Mr. Blue was vice president for Progress Rail Services Corporation, a subsidiary of Florida Progress Corporation. Mr. Blue has been involved with numerous associations and boards, including the Leadership Louisville Foundation Board, the Jewish Community Federation of Louisville, the Cathedral Heritage Foundation, and the Louisville Arena Authority. He was been recognized as a leader by Louisville Magazine and has been honored with the Governor’s Economic Development Leadership Award and the Cornerstone 20/20 Award. Mr. Blue earned his degree in International Business from The George Washington University in Washington D. C. in 1992. Mr. Blue and his wife Karen have two children at KCD: Isaac ’20 and Gracie ’18. Anne Byerlein Anne Byerlein is Chief People Officer for Yum! Brands, Inc., where she is responsible for global human resources. Ms. Byerlein is an officer of the Yum! Brands Foundation and supports the Yum! Brands compensation committee of the board of directors. She also serves on Cornell University’s advanced human resources advisory board and is active in community nonprofit boards. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the KCD board of trustees and is the chair of the Nominating Committee. She and her husband Greg have one son at KCD: Pierce Hollan ’12. Richard H. C. Clay Dick Clay has practiced law with the firm of Woodward, Hobson & Fulton, L.L.P., since 1977 in the areas of complex litigation, pharmaceutical and medical device litigation, appellate practice, and administrative law. He has represented clients in over thirty appeals before the Kentucky Supreme Court, the Kentucky Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Mr. Clay chaired KCD’s Board Development Committee and Annual Enrichment Fund for three years (2003– 2006) and is now serving as co-chair of the KCD capital fund-raising project. He also serves as chair of the board of governors of the J. B. Speed Art Museum and is trustee of the Norton Foundation, Inc. He is a former trustee of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation, Inc., and the Southeastern Council of Foundations. Mr. Clay holds a degree in economics from Davidson College and has spent a year at Yale University Divinity School on a Rockefeller Brothers Foundation Fellowship. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he served as managing editor of the Kentucky Law Journal. He is a past president of the Kentucky Bar Association and a life member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference. He and his wife Elizabeth have four children: Mary (KCD ’06 and Davidson College ’10), John (KCD ’08, Centre College ’12), Bo (currently in tenth grade at St. Francis), and Collier (KCD ’12). Russell F. Cox Russ Cox is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Norton Healthcare, where he has direct executive oversight for hospital/regional market operations, service line functions, system-wide medical affairs and nursing operations, clinical quality, foundations/philanthropy, and marketing/communications. Mr. Cox has shared executive oversight responsibility for other major functions within Norton Healthcare, including finance, legal, information systems, human resources/organizational development, Norton Healthcare’s Old Brownsboro Crossing development, Norton Ventures, and mission and outreach. He has been active in the community by serving on various non-profit/volunteer boards and currently serves on the Downtown Development Corporation Board and Executive Committee, as well as the Leadership Louisville Foundation Board and Executive Committee. Mr. Cox is a graduate of Vanderbilt University’s Owen School of Management executive program and received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Louisville. He and his wife Kathy have two children at KCD: Christian ’16 and William ’18.

Meet the Board of Trustees David Garner David Garner is CEO of ClientLogic Corporation, a global services company of 22,000 employees. Prior to ClientLogic, Mr. Garner founded SHPS, a Louisville-headquartered company providing employee benefit services, in 1998. Mr. Garner was elected to KCD’s board of trustees in 2006 and currently serves on the finance and research internship committees. Mr. Garner has also served on numerous boards of both private and public companies. Mr. Garner graduated from Louisiana Tech University. He and his wife Dana have one KCD graduate (Colin ’07) and two other children at KCD: William ’09 and Meredith ’11. Rudy Gernert ’76 Rudy Gernert is a partner in the investment management firm of Mainstream Investment Advisers, where he is responsible for business strategy. He retired in 2007 as president and CEO of AEGON Institutional Markets, where he had worked for over twenty-five years, holding various positions in the areas of technology, investments, marketing, and financial management. Mr. Gernert joined the KCD board in 2007 and served on the Strategic Planning Committee. He has been a member of several other boards, including the Louisville Fund for the Arts and the Stable Value Investment Association. He received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from Emory University and is a chartered financial analyst and chartered financial consultant. He is a 1976 graduate of KCD, and he and his wife Melissa have three children at the school: Layne ’11, Lyle ’11, and Carson ’11. Robert N. Jones Robert N. Jones is a seasoned entrepreneur who has engineered over forty startups. Mr. Jones’ career in the senior management side of healthcare began sixteen years ago when he started what was originally a one-unit health imaging center known as Indiana MRI. Mr. Jones expanded the business into what is known today as Soteria Imaging Services, a multi-state, multi-modality medical imaging business. Mr. Jones earned his bachelor’s degree in business at Indiana University. He has also served his country in the Coast Guard. Mr. Jones was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2005. He is also on the board of The Morton Center. Bob and his wife Midge have six children—Scott, Kimberley, Laura, Taylor, Matthew, and Andrew—and ten grandchildren. Matthew (2004) and Andrew (2008) are KCD graduates. Mac Maclin Mac Maclin has been the owner of Maclin and Associates for nearly thirty years. Mr. Maclin was born and raised in Tennessee and moved to Louisville in 1973. He has been a member of Hurstbourne Baptist Church for fifteen years and a member of the Cedar Lake Lodge board for over twenty years. Mr. Maclin and his wife Beverly have one daughter, Katie ’05, who was a lifer at KCD. Ted Mitzlaff ’86 Ted Mitzlaff is president of Cherokee Chemical Inc. for the Eastern United States and co-founder / CEO of Reliance Automation, which manufactures automation for industrial processes. He is also a partner in FTC Holdings, LLC, which manufactures and distributes craft beer, primarily under the Bluegrass Brewing Company brand. He has served as a volunteer for Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, on the manufacturer’s council steering committee of the Louisville Chamber of Commerce, and president of the KCD alumni board. He is a 1986 graduate of KCD and received his B.A. from the University of Richmond. He and his wife Elizabeth have three children: Elizabeth Hayden Mitzlaff ’16, Madison Lee Mitzlaff ’16, and Miles Houston Mitzlaff ’20.

Meet the Board of Trustees Archie Parsley Jr. Archie E. Parsley Jr. is a registered professional engineer and is the founder and president of Parco Construction, Inc. Mr. Parsley was elected to the KCD board of trustees in 2005 and currently serves as chair of the auditorium task force and as a member of the strategic planning committee. Mr. Parsley is a co-founder and board member of the Jamie and Cory Foundation, which was established in memory of Jamie Parsley and Cory Stauble. Mr. Parsley also serves on the development committee for the Sacred Heart Village and is a past member of the board of overseers at Spalding University. Mr. Parsley holds a bachelor of science and a master of engineering degree from the University of Louisville Speed Scientific School. Mr. Parsley and his wife Kay are the parents of three children: Michelle, Brian, and Jamie. Dan Rechter Dan Rechter helps manage several companies that he owns with his brother, sisters, and cousins. Over his twentythree-year career he has held a variety of positions with these companies. He is an active member of his church and regularly teaches adult Sunday school. He also serves on the boards of Purity Zinc Metals and National Directory Assistance, LLC. He has previously served on the boards of Stage One Children’s Theatre, The Louisville Science Center, Bridgehaven, Big Brothers, Inc., of Hopkinsville, Oak Grove/Ft. Campbell Chamber of Commerce, and the Hopkinsville Homebuilders Association. Dan earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Centre College and his master’s in business administration from the University of Louisville. Mr. Rechter has been involved with the KCD community for ten years. He and his wife Jane have two children at KCD: Sam ’09 and Natalie ’11. Mr. Rechter has enjoyed the hundreds of activities he has attended at KCD and has volunteered in several areas, including striping the lacrosse fields once a week for two years. Bill Tway Bill Tway joined the KCD Board of Trustees in 2008, and he currently serves on the Nominating and Development Committees. He holds a degree from Vanderbilt University. Mr. Tway and his wife, Gail Burke Tway ’86, have two children at KCD: Lily Tway ’17 and William Tway ’19.
Patty Dabney West ’74 Patty Dabney West ’74 graduated from Kentucky Country Day in 1974 and Vanderbilt University in 1978. She currently works part time. In addition to serving on the KCD board of trustees, Ms. West is also a member of the board of Cabbage Patch Settlement House. She has also been active on the Walden Theatre and Farmington boards and is an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Ms. West holds a B.A. from Vanderbilt University. Ms. West and her husband Bill are the father of three, including KCD alumnus Will West ’06 and current student Caroline West ’11.
Ex Officio Members Kathy Cox, Parent Association Chair Kathy is currently serving as the chair of the KCD Parent Association. She has been an active parent volunteer at KCD, where she has also served as a grade representative, lower school liaison, and vice chair of the Parent Association. She joined the board of trustees in 2007 and has served on the Internship and Safety Committees. Kathy is also active in the community and has chaired the Snow Ball benefiting Kosair Childrens’ Hospital for several years. She is also a catechist for St. Frances of Rome Church. Kathy holds a degree from the University of Kentucky. She and her husband Russ have two children at KCD: Christian ’16 and William ’18.

Meet the Board of Trustees Heather Alford, Parent Association Vice Chair Heather Alford currently serves as the vice chair of the KCD Parent Association. She also works part time in the Oldham County School System. She has been an active volunteer at KCD and other community organizations. This is her first year on the board, and she will serve on the Security and Endowment task force groups. Heather holds degrees from Centre College and Indiana University. She and her husband Hank have three children at KCD: Olivia ’13, Jackson ’16, and Coleman ’19. Susan Dabney Lavin ’80, Alumni Association President Ms. Lavin was elected to the board of trustees in 2006. In addition to serving on the Development Committee, she also serves as president of the alumni association. Ms. Lavin is also a member of the board of directors of the Nature Conservancy. Ms. Lavin holds a degree from Hollins University. She and her husband Allan have three daughters at KCD: Catherine ’15, Alexandra ’17, and Elizabeth ’17. Pai Charasika ’94, Alumni Association Vice President Since August, 2006, Pai Charasika has worked at Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Inc. as First Vice President / Investments. As a wealth management strategist, Mr. Charasika advises clients on investments, insurance, liabilities, estate planning, business succession, and gifting strategies. He is financial advisor to $30 million of client assets with a focus on appropriate asset allocation, strategic investment planning, and investment monitorization. Mr. Charasika also serves on the board of the Meredith Dunn School and is a member of Leadership Louisville’s Ignite Louisville Class of 2009. He is also a member of the KCD varsity football coaching staff. He is a 1994 graduate of KCD and holds a B.A. from Wake Forest University and an M.B.A. from the University of Louisville. Mr. Charasika is married to Amy Marchell Charasika, who is a KCD math teacher and varsity field hockey head coach.

his summer, Diversity Coordinator Dexter Mahaffey ’89 led six students and fellow faculty member Tim Rice on a history-making trip to Louisville’s sister city of Tamale, Ghana. The trip marks the first first step in a ongoing partnership with two schools in Tamale—the Tamale Islamic Secondary School and Dahin Sheli Primary/Junior High School—that Mr. Mahaffey sees as part of a long-term relationship that will benefit students on both continents.
The KCD delegation brought 800 pounds of luggage and equipment with them to Tamale, including switches, routers, modems, and 2500 feet of network cable. When they departed five days later, the forty computers in the Tamale Islamic computer lab were online via a network set up by KCD Director of Technology Tim Rice and the computer teacher at the school. Our students also assisted with the installation, including hand-cutting and capping the network cable with connectors. The Internet connection at the school made Tamale Islamic the first secondary school in northern Ghana to go online. “It’s very gratifying,” Mr. Rice said. “The lab that we helped to set up is now open to the public and is a resource for the community.” According to our students, the best part of the trip was the chance to get to know their Ghanaian peers. “Making friends definitely had the biggest impact on me,” stated senior Kelly Beam. “Everyone was very open and welcoming.” Senior Hayden Dry agreed. “They loved sharing with us. We learned so much about Ghanaian culture and customs. They especially loved teaching us to speak in [local dialect] Dagbani.” In January, Kelly and Hayden will return to Tamale for three weeks for their senior projects, which involve working as teacher aids at Dahin Sheli. The next group of KCD students will travel to Tamale this February, with another trip to follow in the summer of 2009. KCD has continued to build on this relationship with our sister city in several other ways. This fall, upper school students and Mr. Mahaffey sold clothing and textiles handmade by Ghanaian women at the Colwood abandoned women’s co-op. Proceeds from the sale not only recouped the initial $2000 invested in Colwood, but also generated a profit of nearly $1250, which was donated to the Tamale Scholarship and Aid Fund, which provides tuition fees to Ghanaian students who would not otherwise be able to attend high school. This December, a dress down fund-raiser and other activities raised $200 to benefit the Shekinah medical clinic in Tamale. Several upper school students followed up on the fund-raisers with a phone call to Dr. David Abdulai, a doctor at the clinic. The students and Dr. Abdulai discussed the health care system in Ghana, the doctor’s personal experiences with HIV patients, and how KCD’s fund drive will benefit the people in Tamale. Both Mr. Mahaffey and Mr. Rice are excited about what this relationship has to offer to KCD and to our students. “Yes, we helped them set up their computer lab,” Mr. Mahaffey explained, “but they gave us so much more than we gave them. The opportunities that we’ll be able to offer our students through this relationship are just fantastic.” “We learned so much from our friends there,” Hayden Dry said. “Not just about culture or language but about the meaning of hospitality and family.” “This trip really opened my eyes,” Kelly Beam agreed. “It changed my life.”

KCD Reconnect Alumni find opportunities through KCD Reconnect internship program
Last summer, twelve KCD alumni landed summer internships thanks to KCD Reconnect, a new alumni internship program launched by the KCD Alumni Association. The project was spearheaded by former Alumni Board President Jana Clanton Dowds ’80, who stated that KCD Reconnect was created in order to assist KCD alumni in two primary areas: helping college students find summer internships and helping college graduates find permanent job opportunities in Louisville. According to Ms. Dowds, her desire was to tap the great resources that KCD’s parent and alumni communities could offer to our graduates. In the inaugural year of KCD Reconnect, most of the available internships (see facing page) were offered by companies owned by KCD parents or in which a parent has significant involvement. This summer, the alumni who received placement in a summer internship included: Lindsey Jones ’05: Yum! marketing internship Ellen Snell ’07: Intern for Julie Adams, 18th District Metro Councilwoman Daniel Niswonger ’05: Senior Care internship Alison White ’06 and Parker Moore ’05: Stifel Nicolaus internships Rachel May ’06, Sunny Kemparajurs ’08, Raina Chandiramani ’08, Ross Hatton ’07, Will West ’06, Ryan Goode ’04, and Alex Weber ’07: Sypris Solutions interns The goal of the internship program is to provide meaningful summer employment opportunities for college-age alumni. As the program continues to develop, we hope to add an increasing number of full-time, postgraduate positions. According to the alumni who participated this summer, the program was successful in providing hands-on experience in a professional work environment. According to Alison White ’06, the real world experience provided by her internship proved to be the most valuable part of the program. Alison spent eight weeks at Stifel Nicolaus, where she worked with Pai Charasika ’94. “My KCD Reconnect internship was a great way for me to apply college classroom theory to the real world,” Alison stated. “Having an experience such as mine would have been nearly impossible without the Reconnect program. I am grateful to

KCDInternships Reconnect KCD Reconnect: 2008 KCD and the opportunities that it continues to present me even after graduation.” Alex Weber ’07 also found the internship a valuable way to learn hands-on business skills. As a continuous improvement analyst intern at Sypris Solutions, Alex helped to determine how best to eliminate surplus equipment while generating revenue for the company. According to Alex, one of the most important lessons she learned was about the importance of communication: “One big lesson I learned was the importance of communicating with the people you are working with. The manufacturing world is much faster-paced than the academic world, and people have multiple priorities. If something important was required of them to complete a task in our project, I learned that I needed to follow up with them face-to-face to make sure that it happened.” For Ryan Goode ’04, who worked at Sypris as a legal department intern, the job was a great opportunity to gain real-world professional experience. “Working at Sypris Solutions this past summer was a fantastic opportunity for which I am extremely grateful,” Ryan said. “It’s often difficult for entering law students to find meaningful employment prior to their first year. However, Sypris was willing not only to reach out to the KCD community, but also to provide what I hope ended up being a mutually beneficial relationship. Working in the legal department was a great match for my career interests and gave me great insights and experience that will benefit me far down the road.” The KCD Reconnect program grew out of the existing KCD International Internship Program, which offers summer internship opportunities to current KCD upper school students. This summer, seven students participated in the International Internship Program, which allows our students to learn hands-on business skills through placements with leading companies locally, in the region, and abroad. This year, our students were placed with Yum! Brands, Sitel, Kentucky Trailer, Norton Healthcare, and Underwriter’s Safety and Claims. In addition to internship positions with these local companies, two international internships took students abroad. Senior Lincoln Giesel interned with Sitel’s office in Bangalore, India, where he worked in various departments, including finance, human resources, and business development. Senior Ami Patel worked at Sitel’s office in Manila, the Philippines. These internship programs couldn’t be successful without the help of many of our current parents and alumni. In addition to those individuals recognized in the sidebar at right, we would like to thank KCD parents Anne Byerlein (Yum! Brands), David Garner (Sitel), Gary Smith (Kentucky Trailer), Russ Cox (Norton Healthcare), and Scott Ferguson (Underwriter’s Safety and Claims) for making these wonderful opportunities available to our students. Morning Announcements Jean Amick receives lifetime achievement award!
This September, KCD French teacher Jean Amick was honored by the Kentucky World Language Association (KWLA) as one of two recipients of the 2008 KWLA Lifetime Achievement Award. The executive board of the KWLA presented Ms. Amick with the award during a ceremony on September 27, in Lexington. Ms. Amick has been teaching French for thirty-seven years. Since 1997, she has dedicated her talents to students at KCD, where she currently serves as chair of the world languages department. During her tenure at KCD, Ms. Amick has played an important role in expanding the Spanish program to the Lower School, implementing the Rosetta Stone software and Yabla online language service in the Middle and Upper Schools, and developing a student exchange program with Lycée Ste Thècle, a secondary school in Clermont-Ferrand, France. She has also continued to be active in professional language associations and has both attended and presented at numerous conferences and workshops. In his announcement of the award, KWLA President Thomas Sauer stated, “It would be impossible to list all of the impressive achievements and contributions Jean has made to the world language community in her district, her state, and on the national scene. Her dedication to teaching is evident not only by her work in the classroom, but also in her involvement in professional development, teacher training, the continuous promotion of the French language and culture, and international partnerships. Jean’s longstanding commitment to KWLA is unparalleled, and her impact is still felt in the operations of the organization today.” Mr. Sauer’s comments are echoed by KCD Head of School Brad Lyman, who stated that “Jean Amick personifies the essential qualities of great teaching through her dedication to her subject matter, her love of working with young people, and her passion for excellence. who is dedicated to promoting foreign language education as an essential component of a twenty-first century education.” In addition to her role in shaping the world languages department at KCD, Ms. Amick has also had a profound impact on those students she has taught. Julie Riggs-Johnson, who teaches middle school French and German, cites Ms. Amick’s influence on her own decision to become a teacher: “I have seen Jean’s hard work and dedication first-hand ever since I was her student in 1991. Jean is the reason that I am a teacher today, and I, along with countless other former students, will always be grateful for the great passion and knowledge on so many levels that she has shared over the years.” After thirty-seven years, Ms. Amick remains passionate about the importance of teaching world languages. “Studying languages gives you a broader view of life experience,” she stated. “When you study a language through its songs, its poetry, its news, you learn that other cultures have different ways of viewing the world. You learn that our world view is not the only one.”
Booster Club names coaches of the year
For the first time, the KCD Bearcat Athletic Booster Club has recognized two coaches with its annual Coach’s Award. This award is based on the coach’s contribution to the program based on factors such as leadership, administration, and success. This year’s recipients were varsity baseball coach Joe Maione and varsity field hockey coach Amy Charasika. Past winners include Pat McAnulty, Brina Stephens, and Arron Davis. The award comes with a monetary award to be used toward the advancement of each coach’s program. Coach Joe Maione is a nine-year Bearcat head coach who has been instrumental in establishing a winning culture within KCD baseball. His devotion led to eight winning seasons in nine years, a rising middle school baseball program, and the construction of the indoor Cook Athletic Training Center. Coach Maione has accumulated a school record 121 victories compared to 97 losses. Last season, his 2008 team tied a school record seventeen wins against eight losses. Virtually every individual and team school record has been recorded under his tenure. His squad has recorded three straight All “A” regional championships, including this past 2008 season. In just three seasons as the head coach for the Bearcat field hockey program, Coach Amy Charasika has earned two state championship runner-up titles and two district championships. Despite returning only three of eleven starters this past season, Coach Charasika’s team set school records of 21 season victories and 119 season goals to earn a state runner-up finish. During her short tenure, the former Wake Forest All-American has molded six Division I and seven Division III players to succeed in the college ranks. Her 55 KCD career wins average out to over 18 wins a season and a 73 percent winning average. With Coach Charasika’s strong organizational skills

Former board chair Pat Mulloy receives Exceptional Service Award
During the Chair’s Reception held at Hurstbourne Country Club on October 10, former KCD board chair Pat Mulloy (below with his family) was presented with KCD’s Exceptional Service Award. Mr. Mulloy served on the KCD board of trustees from 1996–2003. He served as board chair from 2000–2003, during which time he led the school through the successful capital campaign that built the Frazier Upper School, modernized the athletic facilities, and essentially created the look of the KCD campus that we know today. Under his direction, the board rewrote KCD’s mission statement, both to reaffirm the school’s commitment to a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and also to state explicitly our commitment
to making that education available to all children in our community. That mission statement was then summarized in a new motto: Citizen, Scholar, Steward. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Mulloy has demonstrated a genuine affection for teachers and a respect for teaching. His son Patrick, daughter Mollie, and daughter-in-law Mandy have all pursued careers in education at KCD. The Chair’s Reception, which was hosted by Board Chair Scott Ferguson and his wife Janie, provides an opportunity to thank our major volunteers and donors who have contributed $1000 or more to the school during the previous year.
Girls’ cross country team captures regional title
This November, the KCD girls’ cross country team captured the third region championship title following an exceptional performance on the demanding course at McNeely Lake. Two Bearcats— freshman Kaylen Strench and sophomore Anabelle Ferguson—won individual medals with top-ten finishes.
Head cross country coach Brina Stephens was named All Area Coach of the Year.
In recognition of her team’s outstanding performance this season, head cross country coach Brina Stephens was named as the Girls Cross Country All Area 1A Coach of the Year. According to Athletic Director Tim Green, “Brina embodies a successful coach. She puts the athlete first and sees sport as a vehicle to build character in her players. She is also competitive and strives to win. KCD is very lucky to have Coach Stephens leading our cross country program.” Coach Stephens has been the head cross country coach for eight seasons.
Enrollment hits all-time high
We have once again started a new school year by breaking records—enrollment this year is at an all-time high. As of December, there were 917 students enrolled in grades JK through 12! (342 in Lower School; 304 in Middle School; 271 in Upper School.) Congratulations to Jeff Holbrook and the admissions office staff on this accomplishment! Class chairs play an integral part in the life of alumni and development affairs at KCD. They represent a connection between KCD and each graduating class, and their single most important mission is to maintain close, personal ties among classmates. Although KCD will help with reunion plans, each class chair serves as the lead organizer for class reunions. The current class chairs are listed below for each class; those interested in serving should contact Mollie Mulloy ’01 at alumni.kcd.org. There can be more than one class chair per class.
1942 Class chair: TBD In October of 2006, Colonel A. Park Shaw was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame. Out of the 600,000 veterans in Arizona, only 147 have been honored with Hall of Fame status. Of those 147, only 91 are still living.
1961 Class chair: TBD Patricia Keister Lewis is still in Florence, Alabama. She has been married for fortythree years and has three children and three grandchildren. She and her husband still work in the family business.

She continues to work at RTI in health education research, and Austin works at UNC-Chapel Hill with sustainable planning. We are fortunate that their home in Carrboro is only a halfhour from our place on Rock Rest Road in Chatham County. On June 3, my son Dennis Markatos-Soriano graduated with an M.P.A. from Princeton and then moved with his wife Kristine Markatos-Soriano to New York City, where she is working on a master’s at Columbia Teachers’ College.”

I am looking forward to spending time with my friends from KHS again!” Elizabeth Henning Sutton: “I have lived in Charlottesville since transferring there to attend UVA in 1970, except for a brief year teaching in Oran, Algeria, after grad school in French. I’ve enjoyed being here ever since. I have been a teacher at both high school and college level, but my professional life after having three children changed to include freelance writing and photography—even a few children’s books to my name that are now out of print. I am now retired and spending lots of time riding now that the nest is empty. I live on a small farm that keeps me very busy.”

Charlie Blocker ’80 and Shannon Davis Blocker ’85 are still happily living in Bangkok, Thailand, with their two children. Earlier this year, Charlie joined as a partner and Chief Development Officer of InVision Hospitality and InVision Capital (www.invisionhospitality.com), which focuses on investment, strategy, and management of hospitality assets in southeastAsia. Class chair: TBD George Sanderlin competed in the pentathlon at the North and Central America and Caribbean World Masters Track and Field Championships in Clermont, Florida in August. Representing the United States team, he captured the bronze medal. Even though this was only his second track and field pentathlon, he scored a personal record 2,227 points although he pulled his plantar fascia halfway through the competition. The pentathlon consists of the long jump, javelin, 200-meter dash, discus, and 1,500-meter run—all in one day. The picture at right shows George at the NCCWMA Championships after the 200m dash in the pentathlon. George points out the red Puma “Mexico” track spikes: “I bought them in 1974 for $29.95 at Bush-Keller Sporting Goods in New Albany. Those spikes got me through two years of cross-country and track at KCD as well as four years of collegiate track. They’re still getting me through races 34 years later!”

Alumni Updates Brothers are first family of track and field The three Cohen brothers have taken on the role of first family to the KCD track and field program. The Cohens specialize in two field events: throwing the discus and shot put. Ross is a two-time Class A state champion in the discus (2002 and 2003). He is also a two-time state runner-up in the shot put (2002 and 2003). He currently works as an assistant to the Bearcat track and field program. Ross’s younger brother, Eric, finished third in the state during his 2006 senior season. In his freshman year, Reed led the track and field team in the shot put. He is also second in the discus to 2008 Class A fourth-place finisher, Marc Speed ’09. Reed recently won the highest award for boys’ track and field.

MacLeod Andrews ’03 performs onstage at Atlantic Theater Stage 2 Last summer, actor MacLeod Andrews took the stage at New York’s renowned Atlantic Theatre Stage 2 as part of the Potomac Theatre Project’s twenty-first season. MacLeod, who performed in Howard Barker’s No End of Blame and Anthony Minghella’s Politics of Passion, appeared alongside notable actors such as Jesse Hooker and Alex Draper. MacLeod got his first taste of performing by appearing in Kentucky Country Day alumnus Stu Pollard’s Keep your Distance and later working as Stu’s personal assistant. Inspired by the process, Andrews collaborated with some of his close friends at Middlebury College in Vermont to develop his own student-based production company, Steel Toe Productions. The company has produced numerous short films, one of which, Portraiture, made it to the top 25 of MTV’s nationwide VMA competition for best student filmmaker. Aside from co-producing, directing, and writing much of the work, Andrews

Under the direction of Middlebury’s Alex Draper, Claudio Medeiros, Richard Romagnoli, and Cheryl Faraone, MacLeod has taken on many leading roles in such plays as Cabaret, Pillowman, One Flea Spare, Angels in America, and many others, including work directed by Jim Petosa at Maryland’s Olney Theatre Center. In Louisville, he has acted with the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival and the Clarksville Little Theater. MacLeod’s other training for stage and film includes work with the London Theater Exchange, Geof Prysirr, and Louisville’s Mark Sawyer-Dailey and Phillip Cherry.

He was an unraced two-year-old at the time. On April 12, Jazz In The Park ran in the $1 million Grade II Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The first picture below show us, along with another owner Tanner, on the infield grass where they parade the horses for the Derby. The second picture shows Jazz In The Park walking onto the track at Oaklawn for the Derby. To say the least, it was an experience none of us will ever forget!”

Jennifer Roos ’89 makes BGSU coaching history
This June, Jennifer Roos 89 became the first assistant coach in the history of Bowling Green State University to be given an extended contract. Jennifer’s contract as Falcon women’s basketball associate head coach will run through June of 2013. “The BGSU women’s basketball program has become a symbol of achievement not only within the MAC, but also at a national level, and Jennifer has been a big reason for that success,” said Director of Athletics Greg Christopher. “Along with Curt Miller and the rest of the staff, she has been instrumental in lifting the program to unprecedented heights.” With the terms of the contract, Jennifer will not only be the first assistant coach in the women’s basketball program’s 35-year existence to be granted a multiyear contract, but will also become the first within the athletic department. “Jennifer is an outstanding coach. This contract is an indication of how we feel about the role that she plays in the overall success of our women’s basketball program,” said Janna Blais, senior associate athletic director. “She has an exceptional work ethic and a personality that inspires those around her to maintain a high level of excellence.”

Alumni Updates Meredith Fisher ’06 hits the runway with Wayf clothing Meredith Fisher’s love of fashion was born during her time as a student at KCD, and her Wayf clothing line (the name is an acronym for where are you from) got its start during her senior year. During her last year of upper school, Meredith began selling items on consignment at the Louisville boutique Curve. That same year, her designs were picked up by the trendy Los Angeles boutique Satine, and Meredith was interning with designer Jennifer Nicholson, the daughter of Jack Nicholson. Her designs attracted the attention of fashion insiders, and before she knew it, Meredith was launching a career as a designer—all before she even graduated from high school!
Despite dividing her time between Louisville and Los Angeles during her senior year, Meredith graduated Cum Laude. She is currently enrolled in business school at the University of Southern California and is working hard to build the Wayf line. Last spring, Meredith introduced her fourth collection, which consists of more than thirty pieces. Her designs are now establishing themselves in boutiques such as Saks Fifth Avenue and RIOT showrooms in New York and Los Angeles. Department stores such as Barneys and Selfridges have also ordered items from Meredith’s most recent line.
Alex Sweet ’04 competes at Olympic Trials During his sophomore year at Washington & Lee, Alex Sweet ’04 decided to join the swim team. Although he was already a member of W & L’s basketball team, Alex’s freshman season had been plagued by a stress fracture and a bout with mononucleosis that sent him to the hospital. Once he was healthy again, Alex decided to trade in basketball for swimming (he had participated in both sports at KCD), and his athletic career took off. During his junior year, Alex took sixth place in the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III championships and earned All-American recognition. He fared even better as a senior, capping his W & L athletic career by winning the 50-yard freestyle at the 2008 Division III championships and once again earning All American recognition. Alex’s performance set a new meet record and gave the W & L swim team its first NCAA champion. After graduating from Washington & Lee in 2008 with a degree in biochem-

istry, Alex set his sights on the Olympic Trials, a goal he realized by meeting the qualifying standard in the 50-meter freestyle. The Olympic Trials were held June 29–July 6, 2008, at the Qwest Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Alex entered the trials seeded 83rd out of 115 swimmers in the 50-meter freestyle—an event recognized as the deepest and fastest in the history of the sport. The field for the event was so fast, in fact, that two-time defending Olympic champion and U.S. recordholder Gary Hall Jr. was seeded seventh! This fall, Alex began his first year of medical school at U of L. He has a year of swimming eligibility left and is swimming for U of L, where he is on the “A” sprint relays and set a new pool record at U of L’s new natatorium this fall in the 50 free. Balancing medical school with athletics is not an easy task: Alex starts swimming at 6:00 a.m, goes to class all day, lifts weights in the afternoon, and studies all evening.

In Memoriam Charles R. Quillen ’74 passed away May 18, 2008. Harry Lewman ’68 died July 8, 2008, at Baptist Hospital East. He was the owner and president of the Harry Lewman Co. and a lifetime resident of Louisville. He was a graduate of Louisville Country Day School and Brown University. Harry was honored in February 2007 as a Royal Bearcat in recognition of his 1968 track and field accomplishment of winning two state titles. Harry’s younger brother Peter and his son Curtis are both KCD graduates. Beloved former teacher Ben Hewes died peacefully on July 6, 2008, at 92 years of age. His first employment was at Kentucky Military Institute, where he discovered a lifelong passion for teaching. Shortly after joining KMI, he enlisted in the Army and served in Europe under General George Patton and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he resumed his teaching career at KMI, where he dedicated his life to enriching the lives of all his students. He followed the careers of many KMI graduates and beamed with pride at their achievements. After KMI closed, he continued his teaching career at Kentucky Country Day until his retirement in 1981.

reunion weekend Class of 1973 to Celebrate 35th Reunion (one year late!)
Louisville Country Day and Kentucky Home School decided to merge in the fall of 1972. Combining these two disparate cultures left the new entity in complete disarray. The senior class—the class of 1973—stepped up to the plate and exploited that confusion to the maximum benefit. Keeping with the tradition of that most inauspicious beginning, the graduates of the first graduating class of Kentucky Country Day will celebrate their 35th reunion one year late. We scheduled our 35th to coincide with the annual KCD Alumni Weekend on June 5–6, 2009, so you will be able to enjoy a golf outing with other alums on Friday, June 5, followed by a picnic that evening. However, the real fireworks are scheduled for Saturday night, June 6, when we will celebrate our reunion along with the class of 1974. The tentative steering committee for this august occasion is Barry Barlow, Frank Hower, Jeff Johnston, Kak Graves Doll, Beth Radford Welch, and Weezie Crawford Kramer (with Paul Hagenau as faculty advisor). Alumni Events Reunion Weekend: KCD Alumni Golf Outing A record crowd turned out for the an-
nual Alumni Golf Outing on Friday, June 6, 2008. Over sixty alumni joined former classmates and friends to play the alumni golf scramble out at Nevel Meade. The golfers enjoyed snacks and refreshments as well as beer donated by BBC. The class of 2000 team of Allen Bahe ’01, Alex Gift ’00, John Jennings ’00, and Charlie Farnsley ’00 won the tournament and were presented with KCD Vineyard Vines ties as their prize! The golfers headed back to KCD for our second annual Family BBQ Extravaganza! Entertainment was provided by the fabulous band This That and the Other, which features KCD alums John Davis ’87 and Tommy Atlas ’88. Alumni enjoyed music, BBQ, and beer, while games of corn hole and bocce ball kept the kids entertained. During the BBQ, Grafton Harper ’82 and his family surprised Latin teacher Dick Aylor by presenting him with a plaque dedicating his Latin classroom in his honor. (See picture on the facing page.) Funds for the dedication were donated by the Harper family and members of the class of 1982. The Harper family also presented Mr. Aylor with a check to be used for the purposes of professional development. Thanks to John Davis and This That and the Other for the entertainment as well as to Ted Mitzlaff and BBC Brewing for the great beverages!

Luncheon took place on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. Over thirty Kentucky Home alumnae were in attendance at this year’s lovely luncheon. There was a group celebrating their 60th reunion (class of 1948, at right) as well as a group celebrating their 40th reunion (from the classes of 1967 and 1968!). The ladies enjoyed a wonderful lunched catered by Maureen Hartman of Cafe Fraiche while reminiscing about their days at KHS.

Alumni Events Washington, D.C., Reunion The KCD alumni association and
Head of School Brad Lyman hosted a happy hour gathering for KCD alumni living in the Washington, D. C., area on Thursday, March 27, 2008. The event was held downtown at Chef Geoff’s, and over thirty alumni were present, including a few from our predecessor schools, Kentucky Home and Louisville Country Day. Former classmates enjoyed catching up with one another at the event. This is the second D. C.-area reunion organized by the alumni association.

Alumni Events Alumni Field Hockey Game Over twenty alumni field hockey
players came out on Tuesday evening, August 5, for the alumni field hockey scrimmage. The former Bearcats played the current varsity team led by Coach Amy Charasika. Many fans came out to cheer on the alumni and the varsity Bearcats in this closely matched scrimmage. Following the game, field hockey players, former players, and enthusiasts enjoyed a pizza dinner in the Parsley Pavilion.

Alumni Battleball Many brave alumni made it out to
KCD on the Friday after Thanksgiving for our 5th annual Battleball tournament. Coach Arron Davis was on hand to provide a reintroduction to the game that we all played so many years ago! The alums enjoyed the old KCD version of dodgeball and marveled at all the changes our gym has undergone in the past few years thanks to the Booster Club. Alumni Events Louisville Country Day class of 1958 celebrates 50th This June, the Louisville Country Day
celebrated their 50th reunion with a cookout at the home of Richard and Patti VanCleave. Rice Leach, Lee Lorch, and Jock Davenport were among the first students to attend LCD—all of them entered sixth grade in 1961 when LCDS first opened. In fact, Jock Davenport was literally the first person to go to Country Day. In September of 1951, Jock’s father dropped him and his brother Don at the doors at 6:30 a.m. (Mr Lorch worked in Indiana and had to be at work early.) A special thanks goes to Patti and Richard for sharing their beautiful home for this event.

Alumni Events Kentucky Home class of 1968 celebrates 40th by Kim Holley Wilde ’68
The Kentucky Home School for Girls
class of 1968 gathered in Louisville over June 27–28 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our graduation. Twenty of the twenty-seven classmates were able to attend. A tour of the old KHS campus on Douglass Boulevard on Friday afternoon kicked off our weekend. The Douglass Community Center was kind enough to allow us to wander and explore the beloved old mansion. It was generally agreed that everything looked much smaller than we had remembered! We posed on the front steps, assuming the same positions we had in our yearbook centerfold photo, only this time without the funny costumes. We all wore stunning scarves made by artist & classmate Cindy Smith. Friday evening, there was a dinner cruise on the Star of Louisville with spouses and significant others in attendance. There is video proof that we can still shake a leg after all these years!
On Saturday, the festivities began with a brunch held at the beautiful home of Mrs. Lawrence Jones, the mother of classmate Julie Jones. The conversation was as rich and sumptuous as the legendary caramel cake, as we caught up on the last forty years. We shared photos of children and grandchildren, signed old yearbooks, reminisced, and rekindled old friendships. We found ourselves in deep conversations with classmates we had barely known, despite the smallness of our number, discovering an abundance of similarities in our lives, careers, and interests. Our finale was a dinner held at the newly opened Blackstone Grille in Prospect, owned by classmate Cathy Cook Dissell and her husband Rick. Food, drink, surroundings, and company were all perfection, as we were joined again by spouses and friends. Our seven absent classmates were dearly missed, and we hope they are able to join us for the next reunion, which we have agreed will be much sooner than later!

Alumni Events Louisville Country Day class of 1968 celebrates 40th at the Downs This fall, the LCD class of 1968
celebrated their 40th reunion with a day at Churchill Downs. Alumni started their day at the Downs with two corporate boxes whose fridge was stocked with beer and wine and filled with sandwiches and snacks. Classmates and their wives came from as far away as Boston (Henry Hardy) and South Carolina (Henry Cary). Alumni shared stories, laughed, wagered, and generally had a great time. After the sixth race, a personal guide from Churchill escorted class members down to the paddock, gave them a brief history of the track, then took them trackside to the winner’s circle to watch the seventh race, which was named in the program in honor of the Daymen, LCD class of 1968. Following the race, they presented the trophy to the winning jockey and trainer. Class members accepted the winning trophy as a keepsake, which will find its home at KCD. Ben Isaacs and David Chandler picked the winners of this race and others in the form of exactas, late doubles, and the like. After the races, alumni met at in a private room at Pat’s Steak House, where they enjoyed more stories, great steaks, and plenty of Old Rip Van Winkle (Julian Van Winkle’s family bourbon).

Alumni Events Class of 1998 celebrates 10-year reunion On Friday, November 28, eighteen
members of the class of 1998 were on hand to celebrate their ten-year reunion at the Highlands home of Pat and Mandy Mulloy. After gathering at Pat and Mandy’s for cocktails and appetizers, the class moved on to the nearby Flanagan’s Ale House on Baxter Avenue for the annual, informal allschool Thanksgiving Reunion.
Members of the class are spread out over three continents and are doing unique and amazing things with their lives. Even though their lives have taken them in so many different directions, it was a wonderful evening that brought friends together to reminisce (many were KCD lifers) and share stories. Those who were unable to attend were greatly missed!
