A Storm Water Interactive Community Center

Program: Location: Period: Partner:

Community Center Boston, MA December, 2019 Sravya Sirigiri

This project envisions an alternative solution of the rising sea level with 2 celsus degree increse at East Boston waterfront. It plays with the pinball game table and provides an amusing interactive space to protect citizens from the enhancive storms as well as let them enjoy the storm water management process.

Only time will tell what impact interventions such as these have on public perception of floods and sea level rise. It is our sincere hope that building landscapes that celebrate our interaction with water will continually remind us of our ability to work with and adapt to nature.” Living with water: Embracing Cultural Adaptions to Floods by Mary Anne Ocampo and Tao Zhang, ASLA, PLA, LEED AP

By 2030, sunny day flooding which mainly happens during high tide events, could occur up to 15 times per year and by 2050, that number might jump to 25 to 75 times annually. The project focuses on the smaller time scale: breaking down the scenario into one big flood. It organizes the way which let water flow into the site; try to capture the water and slow down their leaving process; thelimited the path and direction how water leave the site; it filters part of the water stored and save for future use. Urban Planning Shanghai, China July, 2019 Danielle Valle-Steele

Although Shanghai literally means “above oceans“, the metropolis will have to give up urban territory and hand it back to the delta. The main rivers and their mud planes divide the city into multiple islands. Some will be safe polders (low lands surrounded by berms), others will be left open for the water, so urban agriculture can take place. A re-appropriated system of bunkers, dikes and bridges connect the parts and create a true delta cites.

“Adaptive countermeasures in response to sea-level rise can be divided into three types: retreat, adaptation, or prevention. It appears impossible for Shanghai, a municipality with a dense population, highly developed industry and agriculture to be evacuated inland. So more attention needs to be paid to planning appropriate protection countermeasures and steps to tackle the adverse impacts of sea-level rise,” Wang, B., S. Chen, K. Zhang, and J. Shen. “Potential Impacts of Sea-Level Rise on the Shanghai Area.”

Apartment Building July, 2020 Brittany Leung, Sravya Sirigiri

A home for the future where life is remote. Our design responds to an idea of home that is adaptable and resilient to remote life, offering facilities like coworking and shared living spaces. This home is an apartment unit consisting of nine vertical neighborhoods. A playful and flexible housing typology offers different combinations of apartment layouts on a spectrum of privacy/ collectiveness.

Pocket spaces in between levels are used for urban, shared space that hold a sense of connection and belonging though residents are isolated. Residents have access to their own unit through private circulation in each vertical stack, as well as through common circulation to access the shared area. The use of different circulation paths for different individuals allows for connection through isolation.

TELEPORTING CITY 22

In the last fifty years, Syracuse, New York, revolves around the communal experience, the efficiency of teleportation and has resulted in what could be the most innovating way of navigation, based directly on destination, not in distance or time. These changes result in the prioritization of public spaces, transitional spaces and pedestrian walkways. In 2068, hovering buildings were an innovative way of perceiving space through magnetic fields, points or even cores. Throughout the last 10 years, hovering technologies have come to Syracuse’s Investigative and Creative Sector, resulting in multiple iterations in different shapes and sizes. We introduce our self-supported magnetic hovering building, our SpaceCorp Headquarters, which showcases the newest innovative technologies. Experiencing its spatial qualities seem gravity-defying, and hosting the main TelePortal of Syracuse city is a great privilege to allow our community and visitors be a part of what the future of Syracuse is becoming.

Life and Theatre

Program: Period: Partner: Location:

Flee Market and Theatre May, 2017 Chris Son Vancouver, Canada

The Life & Theatre Building is an intersection between the urban and suburban; sercing residents, once workers, commuters, and artisans. The project aims to facilitate a “sidewalk ballet.” By connecting and exposing various programs, users will staged themselves simultaneously spectating and performing.

“Saturday is Flea Market Day, Holiest of days.” Kate Illison (The Butturfly Clues) “Theatres are curious places, maginians trick-boxes where the golden memories of dramatic triumphs linger like nostalgic ghosts, and where the unexplainable, the fantastic, the fantastic, the tragic, the comic and the absurd are routine occurrences on and off the stage. Murders, mayhem, political intrigue, lucrative business, secret assignations, and of course, dinner.”

A restricted palette of skins is used throughout, tying the building together, yet reconguring to the juxtaposing context and programming.

UNDER THE SKIN 22

UNDER THE SKIN 33

“... an intricate ballet in which the individual dancers and ensembles all have distinctive parts which miraculously reinforce each other and compose an orderly whole.” Jane Jacobs We kept exploring the connection point between theatre and market, and attempted to find a way for the audiences to interact and communicate. We finally decided to open up the functional room and rehearsal room to the public, especially for those interested in street performance and folk art. We believe that, as the functional room and rehearsal room become the shared public space between the theatre and market, it will bring larger potential for citizens to interact, through engaging the citizens with the backstage production process of folk artworks and cultural costumes. There will also be opportunities for artists to rent the space as their studio or display spaces, the identity boundary between the performer and the spectator will be continuously broken down and remerged.
