Reflection 1

Self-analytical evaluation

In Newspaper this semester, the important things I learned are production skills. Deadlines, teamwork, journalism ethics and dedication.

What production skills mean to me is developing skills that I learn in the class room and see other students do over the semester. Learning these things makes the paper great and makes us better writers. Talking advise from teachers and editors helps me understand and learn about topics.

Deadlines are one of the most important things in the paper. It is hard to do but I always make the final deadlines. Having multiple deadlines also helps me with my other classes. Deadlines help me prioritize things I need to get done.

Teamwork in Newspaper is key to creating a good article. I have friends that help me with questions I have on my article or a topic. When we choose what article we want to do, we might not understand the topic, so the editors talk to us about what interviews we should have and about the article.

Journalism ethics means to not copy other peoples work and just say that is your own article. Dedication is learning about the topic and making your own, original article. Journalism dedication and ethics are something that I have in newspaper. Cheating and not getting to know the topic to talk about it makes you a copier and if you have these things you won’t succeed.

What I chose to be my most significant piece of work for the publication this year was my Stage Coach Village article and the picture that went with it.

I believe that this is my best work for the paper because it was a long article with many details about what shops are around. I also got some good interviews from employees that worked there. In my picture I used techniques I learned about in class.

It was not a very difficult article, the only thing that hurt it was the amount of shops in the village. It did not give me a lot to talk about so instead of talking about many shops in general, I had to write specifics on only a few of them.

Reflection 2

My least significant article, what could have been better, was about the best Christmas movies. I believe that is article could have been better if I wasn’t sick most of this issue and I could have gotten interviews.

Being sick during the December issue really hurt most of my articles; I believe that if I wasn’t I could have made the article great.

I didn’t get good interviews, but I had a lot of detail about what the movies were about. I gave information on the directors, what type of movies they are, and what they are about.

I really liked my picture that was put under my article, it had nice color and it was level. I also took many other picture with the article that were my best pictures that I took for the paper.

I believe that my Stage Coach Village article and picture was the best pice of work I’ve done this year.

Reflection 4

I was an asset to the staff this semester because I wrote some nice articles and got good pictures. I worked hard on all articles I was given.

I believe that one of my best article that wasn’t published was hockey for dummies. I absolutely loved this article. I got awesome interviews from fans and from an Arizona Coyote hockey player. I gave details on how to play the sport, how to get better, and why people like hockey.

I also really liked the coffee comparison article between Dutch Bros and Starbucks.

Reflection 5 Some hardships and problems I had this semester was getting sick, news quizzes, and not being a good writer.

Getting sick was the biggest problem for me. I had a hard time getting interviews or getting good interviews for teachers. Being sick also made problems with getting in work that we did during class, so I could not ask questions I wanted to.

News quizzes really hurt my grade because if I selected an answer by accident I couldn’t retake the quiz.

Last is that I’m not a good writer. Writing is something that doesn’t come naturally to me, so it was difficult organizing my thoughts about the topic I was writing about.

Overall, I handled the situation alright. I could have tried harder to get my grade higher, and I did extra credit, but it wasn’t enough.

I will over come this weakness by doing this final project to get my grade up.

SMACK-DOWN STARBUCKS VS DUTCH BROTHERS

CAVE CREEK’S GHOST TOWN A large shopping plaza with a variety of shops, restaurants and vacant buildings, Stagecoach Village embodies the classic ghost town feel of Cave Creek.

Hidden from view Stagecoach Village is unknown to many students. Located in Cave Creek, Stagecoach Village has an old Western setting with many empty suites. During the day, Stagecoach Village is a ghost town, but at night it can be packed with people shopping and dining.

In the center of the village there is a shop called the Indian Market that has been at there for eight years. It sells jewelry such as beads, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, rings, and watches. Some of the jewelry is sold to them by Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo Indians. Others are made by not hand made. They produce fashionable Indian jewelry using high-tech casting equipment. Jewelry is primarily made of turquoise and silver and designed to replicate patterns and styles of handmade Native American pieces.

The Indian Market also sells unique art pieces such as pots, dream catchers, and Kachina dolls.

Unlike the jewelry in the store, the Indian art is made by Native Americans. Titania Yazzie, who is Navajo, sells handmade dream catchers to the shop.

The art that is found in the shop is primarily inspired by the Zuni and Hopi tribes. Zuni art emphasizes stones and craftsmanship. Hopi art, on the other hand, uses symbols of rain, water, and clouds.

Although Dutch Bros is only a drive-thru chain and is not as big as Starbucks, it definitely provides a better overall experience.

"I drive from Phoenix every day," said Constance Baron, an employee.

"I love it here."

At the back of Stagecoach Village is Sam's Barber and Beauty. The shop offers haircuts, hair coloring, and styling from manicures, pedicures, waxing,to massages.

“He gave me a great haircut and was very nice,” said Chris Eyrich, a sophomore. Sam’s Barber and Beauty is open daily 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. with an appointment.

Indigo Crow, a popular new restaurant that opened last year, is located across from the Indian Market. While this Indigo Crow restaurant is new to Cave Creek, the owners Don and Regina have owned another restaurant in New Mexico for 13 years.

The restaurant and bar's menu has different salads, seafood, pasta, and meats. They also have a happy hour, lunch, and brunch. The executive chef is Kristina Huffman and the Pastry chef is Kelly Brinson.

“The atmosphere was nice,” said Kelly McElroy, a junior. “The food was terrific. I had steak which was so delicious and the sauce was great.”

Other businesses currently open in Stagecoach Village include: Blue Sage Gallery, several dentists, Village Coffee and Crepes, Sherry's Hair Salon, and Brix Wine Spot.

There is more than enough room to open up more businesses here.

BRONZE COWBOY GAZES off into the sunset, one of many western sculptures within Stagecoach Village. The plaza has hosted many art festivals that have provided a platform for local artists to show off their work.

Carefree starts Halloween off right with Enchanted Pumpkin Garden

Carefree sets this Halloween off with the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden.

From October 16 to the 31, Carefree will host this holiday event for the enjoyment of families all over Carefree and Cave Creek.

This event will be held at the Carefree Desert Gardens and will be open from 9 a.m.

“I saw a sign on the corner of Carefree highway and Cave Creek road,” said Jennifer Reisener, chemistry teacher and the mother of a third grader.

The Enchanted Pumpkin Gardens is a family friendly event and costumes are encouraged. Admission is free and refreshments are

provided for the guests as well as many food vendors.

Events at the Pumpkin Garden range from live pumpkin carvings, dog shows, kid activities, the “King” pumpkin, or just strolling through the gardens.

“I wanna take a photo with the giant pumpkin,” said Alissa Hafezi, a sophomore.

The “King” pumpkin is

a five foot tall, 500-pound pumpkin carved by Ray Villafane for visitors to enjoy and photograph.

Villafane will be a featured guest at the pumpkin garden.

He is a sculptor who is best known for his 3-D pumpkin carvings and has been featured on the Food Network, and Good Morning America.

He has even carved for the

president at the White House.

On October 16, Villafane will host a live pumpkin carving in the Lincoln Hall. His other carvings will be spread throughout the desert gardens for self guided tours.

“We are going only because my daughter likes it, we don't really go all out for it, but we try to take her to some Halloween events,” said

Reisener.

On Halloween night, the pumpkin garden is open until 10 p.m. so that visitors can see everything lit up.

“I’d want to go with a group of friends,” said Gabe Ozaki, a freshman.

Music, competition, and autumnal foods and drinks can be expected to accompany this event.

I know coffee is something a lot of us can not live without. Some people love Starbucks and others prefer Dutch Brothers.

At the Dutch Bros on 35th Street and Bell Road. There was a long line even though it was only three in the afternoon. Despite this, the line moved extremely fast and my coffee was made quickly. Everyone who worked there was energetic and after hearing it was my first time being here, they were very friendly. An added bonus was the stamp card they give to customers to get a free coffee after nine purchases .

On the negative side, there was only outside seating, the shop was very small and you could not go inside which can be difficult if you want to sit somewhere if it is raining or too hot. I bought two coffees, one was a Carmelizer, which is a frozen mocha with carmel, and the other was a regular latte.

Although they do not have as many options to choose from as Starbucks does, the coffee I got was perfect in temperature and in taste.

At Starbucks on Tatum and Cave Creek Road, only one person was working, so it took a long time to get my coffee, even though there were only two people in front of me. The table was not clean and the chair was very wobbly. The latte was very smooth and milky, but the hot chocolate was kind of plain and bland.

Although Dutch Bros is only a drive-thru chain and is not as big as Starbucks, it definitely provides a better overall experience. Dutch Bros employees are the nicest employees and their coffee is delicious. The two small coffees I got at Starbucks costs about six dollars and at Dutch Bros one small Carmelizer was about three dollars.

The latte was on the house because they knew it was my first time there. From my experience Dutch Bros was the clear winner because of the cheap prices and delicious taste.

There are many holiday movies to choose from, some funny, sad, or feel-good. Everyone has their favorite. These are my top ten movies to watch during the holidays.

1. A Christmas Story. Bob Clark directed this classic story in 1983.

Ralphie needs to convince his parents and Santa to get him a Red Ryder B.B. Gun for Christmas, but they think he will shoot his eye out.

2. Elf. This comedy is a about a man raised as an elf in the north pole who goes to New York in search of his real family. The cast includes Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel.

3. Home Alone. The first in the series directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes is about

a boy who was left at home by his parents who must fight off a pair of burglars to keep his house safe. The cast includes Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Sten.

4. It’s a Wonderful Life. This movie was made in 1947 and directed by Frank Capra. An angel shows a businessman how life would be like if he never existed. The cast includes James Stewart and Donna Reed.

5. Miracle on 34th Street. This feel good movie was directed by George Seaton and also came out in 1947.Claiming to be Santa, an old man is institutionalized, but a lawyer defends him saying he is the real thing. Some of the cast includes Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O’Hara, and John Payne.

6. Polar Express. If you enjoy animation adventures than this is a great holiday movie. A young boy wakes up to see a train outside his house. He goes on a magical adventure to the North Pole to learn about the spirit of Christmas. Made in 2004, the movie stars Tom Hanks, Chris Coppola, and Michael Jeter.

7. The Holiday. This romantic comedy Christmas movie was made in 2006 by nancy Meyers. Two women switch houses in another country for the holiday; they each meet a local man and fall in love. Stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black are the main characters.

8. Scrooged. This classic story remade into a comedy fantasy

The inner lives of serial killers can be a glimpse at what we fear may lurk in our own brains

s of now, there is no known reason why someone becomes a serial killer. Some thought that their environment growing up triggered the characteristic while others assumed that a part of their brain made them that way.

“There was a researcher and he had been paid to be a forensic psychologist and when serial killers were on trial he would come and talk about how the frontal lobe of the brain was not functioning well on the MRIs of these people. As a result he would say that this demonstrates that child was actually born as a serial killer. He continued his work and his research until he took a scan of himself, and what he discovered was that he had a serial killer's brain,” Chris Dodrill, a psychology teacher, said.
