correct pronunciation of the alphabet. But before learning about Hangul 한글 or the 한국어와 한글 Korean Alphabet, the learners should first have a background knowledge about it. This lesson will also apply the localization of how the alphabet should be read as a Filipino, and will not follow the Romanize version found to be erroneous when pronouncing the Korean letters or ‘Hangul’. Romanization is the practice of writing Korean sounds with Latin letters. The non-native speakers of Korean language, especially the beginners rely on pronouncing the words through this, however a lot of studies and also based from the experience of the author as one of the Special Program in Foreign LanguageKorean Scholars, discovered that this romanization, will not help the learners to learn the correct pronunciation of words, but instead it will just be a hinderance to fully understand “Hangul”, that’s why in this lesson one of the innovations, and localize strategy is to innovate a “Romanization that suits 1

the Filipino Learners, based from how they pronounced The Filipino Alphabet”. A. The Korean alphabet is called 'Hangul.'한글 Each letter in Hangeul indicates an individual sound or phoneme. Hangeul is an alphabetic system and was created by King Sejong in 1443 during the Joseon Dynasty. It was originally called ‘Hunmingeongeum’ and means the ‘right sound to teach the common people.’ Before that time, Korean had an oral language but not a native alphabet; instead, Chinese characters, which were sometimes modified according to the structure of Korean sounds, were used. However, it was not well suited to the structure of Korean and made writing very inconvenient. (세종한국어1, 2013). B. Reading and Writing in Hangul- There are different ways for you to be able to write or to get used in reading and writing Hangul. Hangul has 21 vowels and 19 consonants.

According to Korean origins, there are three important elements in the universe: that is Sky, Land, and Human. King 세종 used these symbols in making the Korean vowels. The first shape ‘●’ represents the sky, and the second shape ‘ㅡ’ symbolizes the plate shape of the land. The third shape ‘ㅣ’ indicates human beings, who stand upon the earth under the sky. These three—sky, earth and human—are considered the fundamental features of all things in many East Asian philosophies. 2

Moreover, the learners will also learn the use of grammar ‘이에요/예요, 은/는’, and will learn how it to apply it in their daily communicative task/s. In addition to Illustrated by: Queen Pueblo this, the Filipino Korean Language Learners, will have an in-depth understanding of the proper greetings in Korean, especially when meeting a person for the very first time.

K-TRIVIA. It is important in Korean culture to be polite and show respect toward others. They greet through saying 안녕하세요 (Anyonghaseyo) it is an informal greeting that they use in daily communicative task, at the same time, they bow as they greet. They also shake hands, and use their right hands or both of their hands to give respect. The one who initiates the bow says, “만나서 반갑 습니다.” which means “Pleased to meet you. On the other hands in the Philippines, when you greet a person for the very first time, you may just say “Hi! Kamusta Ako nga pala Si….”, and if you are talking to someone that is older than you, Filipinos will ask 'mano po' to the elder in order to ask permission to press their forehead on the hand. This is an "honoring-gesture" common in Filipino culture performed as a sign of respect to the elders. 10
