39º Salón Nacional de Fotoperiodismo

Los mejores exponentes del periodismo gráfico chileno participaron en la 39° versión de FOTOPRENSA, instancia que cada año, desde 1950, reúne y difunde el trabajo de los reporteros gráficos, destacando su importante rol en la información periodística.

En total, 130 fotógrafos chilenos residentes y de otras latitudes del mundo enviaron más de dos mil imágenes inéditas, potentes y de gran calidad, que relatan de forma única los hechos más relevantes del año 2016, marcado por manifestaciones sociales, distintas crisis medioambientales, la visualización de la violencia contra la mujer y el debate ciudadano sobre la diversidad sexual, entre otros. La muestra, en su conjunto, conforma un asombroso registro visual de declaraciones políticas y expresiones sociales y culturales que han dictado la pauta informativa del país y el exterior.

FOTOPRENSA nació hace casi 70 años, como Concurso Experimental de Fotografía, al alero de la Unión de Reporteros Gráficos y Camarógrafos de Chile, la organización de fotógrafos con mayor tradición del país. Desde entonces, ha sido la principal plataforma para la fotografía periodística nacional y testigo de los cambios en la forma de crear y producir, de la evolución en las herramientas de edición y el surgimiento de nuevas tecnologías en torno a la fotografía, así como del desarrollo social y cultural de nuestro país.

En una nueva edición, invitamos una vez más al público a conocer estos valiosos registros de realidades cercanas, distantes, conocidas y anónimas, que invitan a reflexionar sobre el mundo y la sociedad a la que pertenecemos.

Luego de un intenso proceso de selección, se escogieron 40 trabajos y 174 fotografías que fueron premiadas según las categorías de prensa, retrato, personaje, deporte, naturaleza, vida diaria, cultura e internacional, en las modalidades Individual y Reportaje.

39th National Photojournalism Exhibition

The best exponents of Chilean photojournalism participated in the 39th year of FOTOPRENSA, event that every year since 1950 has gathered together and disseminated the work of photojournalists, highlighting their important role in journalism.

In all, 130 Chilean photographers residing in the country or other parts of the world submitted more than 2,000 original, moving, high-quality images that uniquely portray the most important events of 2016. It was a year characterized by social protests, various environmental crises, awareness about violence against women and the public debate over sexual diversity, among other things. Overall, the exhibition comprises an amazing visual record of political declarations as well as social and cultural expressions that have dictated the public agenda of Chile and the world.

After an intense selection process, 40 pieces of work and 174 photographers were chosen to receive awards in the categories of press, portrait, people, sports, nature, daily life, culture, and international, as singles or stories.

FOTOPRENSA was founded almost 70 years ago as the Experimental Photography Contest by the Association of Photojournalists and Cameramen of Chile, the photographers’ organization with the longest legacy in the country.

Since then, it has been the main platform for national photojournalism and witness to changes in the processes of creation and production, development of editing tools and the emergence of new technologies in photography, as well as social and cultural progress in Chile.

With this new issue, we once again invite the public to observe these valuable records of realities, whether local, distant, famous or anonymous, that bring us to reflect on the world and society to which we belong.

JURADO Alejandro Hoppe Fotógrafo / chileno Photographer Chile “Las fotografías tienen una calidad que cada vez me asombra más. Detrás de cada imagen veo a un fotógrafo que está sintiendo”.

(Sobre los trabajos premiados) A los 21 años estudia fotografía en la Escuela “Foto Forum” y complementa dicho aprendizaje con diversos talleres para perfeccionarse en fotografía periodística.

En 1985 se incorpora a la AFI (Asociación de Fotógrafos Independientes), período en el que comienza a registrar la dura realidad de Chile durante la dictadura. Se ha desempeñado como reportero gráfico en los diarios La Época, La Nación y El Metropolitano, y en las revistas Qué Pasa y Cosas. Además, ha ejercido como docente en los institutos Alpes, Arcos y en la Escuela de Periodismo de la Universidad de Chile. Se desempeñó también como fotógrafo del Presidente Ricardo Lagos. Sus obras ha sido expuestas en diversas muestras colectivas e individuales.

Los miembros del jurado del Salón de Fotoprensa 2017, compuesto por expertos en fotoperiodismo, evaluaron y seleccionaron las mejores imágenes del fotoperiodismo chileno, realizadas el año 2016 The panel of judges of the 2017 FOTOPRENSA Exhibition, comprised of expert communicators in photojournalism, evaluated and chose the best examples of Chilean photojournalism taken in 2016.

Cristián Carvallo Fotógrafo / chileno Photographer Chile “Estoy feliz con la foto ganadora porque es un tema bastante fuerte y que a nivel nacional ha causado mucho debate”.

Fotógrafo autodidacta con más de 20 años de trayectoria. Se inicia laboralmente en la ciudad de Punta Arenas, como corresponsal del diario El Mercurio. Luego de 2 años, se traslada a Santiago, donde continúa desempeñándose como reportero gráfico del mismo diario hasta el día de hoy. Desde entonces, se ha desarrollado en distintas áreas del fotoperiodismo con potentes imágenes de deporte o espectáculo, con sorprendentes retratos o grandes reportajes nacionales e internacionales. Ha sido premiado viarias veces en FOTOPRENSA, entre los que destaca el primer lugar en la categoría de Cultura y Espectáculo (2006 y 2008), distintas menciones honrosas y segundos y terceros lugares en la categoría de Medio Ambiente y Tecnología, entre otros.

At age 21 he began studying photography at the “Foto Forum” school and complemented such coursework with various workshops in order to specialize in photojournalism. In 1985, he became a member of Asociación de Fotógrafos Independientes (AFI), time in which he began to record Chile’s hard reality during the dictatorship. He has worked as a photojournalist for newspapers such as La Época, La Nación and El Metropolitano, and for magazines Qué Pasa and Cosas.

Moreover, he has taught as a professor at institutes Alpes, Arcos and at the School of Photojournalism at Universidad de Chile. He also worked as photographer for President Ricardo Lagos. His work has been exhibited in various collective and individual exhibitions.

Self-taught photographer with over 20 years experience. He began his career in the city of Punta Arenas as a correspondent for the newspaper El Mercurio.

Two years later, he moved to Santiago, where today he continues to work as a photojournalist for the same newspaper. Since then, he has trained in the different areas of photojournalism producing powerful images of the worlds of sports and arts and entertainment, with surprising portraits and great national and international stories. He has been awarded several times by FOTOPRENSA, including first place awards in the category of Arts and Entertainment (2006 and 2008), various honorable mentions as well as second and third place awards in the category of Environment and Technology, among others.

Daniel Jayo Fotógrafo / Argentina Photographer Argentina “Es una foto hermosa de una situación terrible. Cosas que a menudo tiene el fotoperiodismo, describir con estética, tragedias o hechos aberrantes”.

Comienza su carrera como reportero gráfico en las revistas Pelo, Metal y Generación X a fines de los años ochenta en Buenos Aires. A partir de 1993 y hasta el 2006 se desempeña como fotógrafo en los diarios Popular de Buenos Aires y Página 12. Ese mismo año es nombrado editor de fotografía para Latinoamérica y el Caribe en la agencia The Associated Press, cargo en el cual trabajó hasta el 2013. Actualmente se desempeña como reportero gráfico en el diario La Nación, como colaborador de fotografía en la agencia Getty Images Latam y como docente en la escuela de la Asociación de Reporteros Gráficos de la República Argentina, ARGRA.

He began his photojournalism career in the magazines Pelo, Metal and Generación X in the late 80’s in Buenos Aires. From 1993 to 2006 he worked as a photographer in Diario Popular of Buenos Aires and Página 12. That same year, The Associated Press named him Photo Editor for Latin America & the Caribbean, position which he held until 2013. Esteban Félix Fotógrafo / Perú photographer Perú “Tenemos una tendencia fuerte a fotografiar lo que no nos gusta, lo que quisiéramos que desaparezca. La ilusión y el sueño del fotógrafo es que lo que fotografiamos, en algún momento deje de suceder, de existir”.

(Sobre los trabajos premiados) Esteban Félix comenzó su carrera en 1995 como fotógrafo de la revista política Oiga, luego en los diarios El Sol y El Comercio. En 2000, se une a la agencia Associated Press en Honduras. Cubrió el fallido golpe contra el fallecido presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, y el devastador terremoto de 2010 en Haití.

Su trabajo ha sido premiado en World Press Photo, China International Press Photo y Gabriel García Márquez de la Nueva Fundación Iberoamericana de Periodismo. Actualmente es corresponsal de AP en Chile.

The hope and dream of every photographer is that what we photograph should cease to occur or exist at some moment”. (On the award-winning works) Esteban Felix began his career in 1995 as a photographer for the political magazine Oiga, then in the newspapers El Sol and El Comercio. In 2000, he joined The Associated Press in Honduras. He covered the failed overthrow attempt of late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, and the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

His work has won prizes from World Press Photo, China International Press Photo and Gabriel Garcia Marquez de la Nueva Fundación Iberoamericana de Periodismo (FNPI). He is currently an AP correspondent in Chile.

Juan Farías Fotógrafo / Chile Photographer Chile “Es una imagen muy fuerte, muy potente, que habla sobre uno de los temas relevantes de nuestro país y a nivel mundial”. (Sobre la Foto del Año) Fotógrafo profesional con más de 12 años de experiencia. Actualmente es parte del equipo de reporteros gráficos del diario La Tercera, donde realiza coberturas de distinto tipo. Ha sido reconocido entre sus pares chilenos y el año 2016, el jurado de FOTOPRENSA lo premia con el primer lugar en la categoría Vida Diaria por su reportaje “La Priscilla”, que retrata a uno de los transgénero más conocidos de Santiago. Este año y con el mismo trabajo, recibe el segundo lugar en la categoría Vida Diaria en los premios POY Latam (Pictures of the Year), que cada año destaca lo mejor de la fotografía documental iberoamericana. Paralelamente, forma parte del proyecto editorial “Los Otros Editores”, cuyo primer libro – “Ciudadano 0” de la colección Ciudad Vista– ya se encuentra disponible.

“It is a really strong image, very powerful, that talks about one of the important topics of our country and worldwide”. (On the Photo of the Year) Professional photographer with over 12 years experience. Currently he is a member of the photojournalist team of the newspaper La Tercera, where he covers diverse news areas. He has been recognized among his Chilean peers and in 2016, the FOTOPRENSA panel of judges awarded him first place in the Daily Life category for his story “La Priscilla”, which depicted one of the most famous transsexuals in Santiago. This year, the same work received second place in the Daily Life category of the POY (Pictures of the Year) Latam Awards, which each year showcases the best in Ibero-American documentary photography. In addition, he is part of the publishing project “Los Otros Editores”, whose first book – “Ciudadano 0” of the Ciudad Vista collection– is now on sale.

Mariana Bazo Fotógrafa / Perú photographer Perú

Dado Galdieri es un fotógrafo editorial y documental con 20 años de experiencia en la creación, desarrollo e ilustración de historias y conceptos visuales. Se centra en temas sociales y ambientales contemporáneos. Sus imágenes han aparecido en diversos medios tales como Le Monde, Der Spiegel, National Geographic o The Associated Press.

Actualmente es propietario de Hilaea Media y colabora permanentemente para The New York Times, Bloomberg News y Dagens Nyheter.

Tras estudiar historia y geografía, opta por dedicarse a la fotografía de forma profesional. Inicia su carrera participando en diversos talleres fotográficos, que finalmente la llevan a trabajar en el diario El Comercio. En 1992 vende su primera imagen a Reuters, luego de ser la única fotógrafa que durante la crisis provocada por el autogolpe de Estado en Perú, logra capturar la ceremonia de toma de posesión del Vicepresidente como Presidente. Tras el hecho, se une a la agencia de noticias como FreeLancer y sigue perfeccionándose. Estudia durante un año en la Escuela de Fotoperiodismo en Missouri, becada por la Fundación Reuters, y pasa a ser miembro permanente del staff en Perú.

Dado Galdieri is an editorial and documentary photographer with 20 years experience in the creation, development, and illustration of visual stories and concepts. He focuses on contemporary social and environmental topics. His photos have appeared in various media such as Le Monde, Der Spiegel, National Geographic and The Associated Press. He is currently owner of Hilaea Media and continuously collaborates with The New York Times, Bloomberg News and Dagens Nyheter.

After studying history and geography, she decided to work as a professional photographer. She began her career attending various photography workshops eventually leading her to work at the newspaper El Comercio. In 1992, she sold her first photo to Reuters, after being the only photographer who, during the crisis caused by the self-coup of the Peruvian Government, was able to photograph the swearing-in ceremony of the vice president as president. Afterwards, she joined the news agency as a freelancer and continued to improve her skills.

She studied for a year at the School of Photojournalism in Missouri on a scholarship provided by the Reuters Foundation, and then became a permanent staff member in Peru.

Mientras sus padres trabajaban, Cristóbal Olivares vive su infancia junto a Alejandro, su hermano mayor, y amigos del barrio con total normalidad, divirtiéndose en las calles de la cuadra. La fotografía llega temprano a su vida; en ausencia de adultos, inventa nuevos juegos para luego registrarlos con la cámara familiar, que utilizaba a escondidas.

“Mi abuelo materno era apasionado por la fotografía y se demoraba una vida en tomar el retrato familiar, era todo un evento. Durante más de diez años anduve en skate y alucinaba con las revistas gringas y sus fotos. Recuerdo también que una vez, durante el matrimonio de un tío, pensé “voy a ser fotógrafo”. Mi viejo me había pasado la misma cámara familiar que robábamos para que hiciera fotos del evento”.

El sueño de Cristóbal Olivares (Santiago, Chile 1988) se hace realidad. Hoy, es un fotógrafo documental con especial interés en los asuntos sociales. Ha trabajado para distinguidos medios nacionales e internacionales como The Clinic (Chile), Business Week Mag (EE.UU.), Stern (Alemania), FT Weekend Magazine (Reino Unido), The New York Times (EE.UU.), Ojo de Pez (España), Mediapart (Francia), Revista Anfibia (Argentina) y VIA Magazine (Canadá).

Hasta mediados de 2016 formó parte del VII Programa Mentor. Desde 2014 trabaja como co-fundador de Buen Lugar Ediciones, editorial independiente de fotolibros, establecida en Santiago de Chile. Con el libro A-MOR obtiene el premio al mejor libro de fotografía POY (Picture of the Year) Latam 2017, que cada año destaca lo mejor de la fotografía documental iberoamericana.

“La fotografía para mí es principalmente una forma de expresión. Por supuesto el registro y el documento son importantes, sobre todo para futuras generaciones, pero no lo veo como un registro objetivo, sino más bien como registro de mi propia experiencia y punto de vista. Es una excusa para acercarme a temas que sin la cámara no tendría el valor de hacerlo, y el resultado es una suerte de libreta de apuntes en imágenes que adquiere un valor muy relevante al momento de hacerlo público, porque eventualmente genera diálogo y visibilidad sobre un tema”.

Precisamente, durante este último tiempo, mediante su trabajo fotográfico, Cristóbal Olivares se ha encargado de evidenciar el martirio de las mujeres, la violencia machista y el femicidio, tema central de la Foto del Año en Fotoprensa 2017.

“El femicidio es la expresión máxima de violencia contra la mujer, después de un largo círculo vicioso de violencia física y psicológica, pero también habla de lo mal que estamos como sociedad en términos de educación, donde la enseñanza sobre relaciones de género es casi nula. Creo que además de exigir nuevas políticas al gobierno en varios ámbitos -algo que hay que hacer sí o sí- nosotros, los hombres, tenemos que luchar por erradicar el machismo.

Es nuestra tarea aprender más de las mujeres y sobre su razón de lucha, porque ellas están en una desventaja e injusticia terrible por causa nuestra”.

“No se trata solo de levantar el puño cuando la noticia marca la pauta, ya que esto pasa todos los días y como fotógrafos y comunicadores tenemos muchas formas de aportar para que cambie”.

While his parents worked, Cristobal Olivares led a totally normal childhood alongside Alejandro, his older brother, and neighborhood friends, playing in the streets around his block. Photography made an early entrance in his life. In the absence of adults, he invented new games and then documented them using the family camera, which he used secretly without permission.

“My grandfather on my mother’s side of the family was a big fan of photography and would take forever to take the family portrait. It was always a big deal. For 10 years, I rode a skateboard and was crazy about American magazines and the photos in them. I remember thinking once at an uncle’s wedding, “I’m going to be a photographer”. My father had passed me the same family camera that we used to steal so I could take pictures at the event”.

Cristobal Olivares’s (Santiago, Chile 1988) dream came true. Today, he is a documentary photographer with a special interest in social affairs. He has worked for distinguished national and international publications like The Clinic (Chile), Business Week Mag (USA), Stern (Germany), FT Weekend Magazine (UK), The New York Times (USA) Ojo de Pez (Spain), Mediapart (France), Revista Anfibia (Argentina) and VIA Magazine (Canada).

Until mid-2016 he was part of the VII Mentor Program. Since 2014 he has worked as co-founder of Buen Lugar Ediciones, an independent photobook publisher, based in Santiago, Chile. His book “A-MOR” won the 2017 LATAM POY (Picture of the Year) Best Photography Book Award, which each year showcases the best in Ibero-American documentary photography.

As of late, via his photographic work, Cristobal Olivares has focused on portraying the martyrdom of women, gender violence and femicide, central topic of the 2017 Fotoprensa Picture of the Year.

“Femicide is the maximum expression of violence against women, after a long vicious circle of physical and psychological violence, but also talks about how far behind we are as a society in terms of education, where teaching about gender relations is almost inexistent. I believe that in addition to demanding new policies from the government in several areas –something that must be done no matter what- we men must fight to eradicate sexism. It is our job to learn more about women and their struggle, because they are at a terrible disadvantage and face injustice caused by us”.

“It’s not about only becoming activists when the topic is in the media spotlight, because that happens everyday. As photographers and communicators there is a lot we can do to bring about change ”.

“To me, photography is mainly a form of expression. Of course the recording and documenting aspects are important, especially for future generations, but I don’t see it as an objective record, but rather as a record of my own experience and point of view. It is an excuse to approach subjects that, without the camera, I wouldn’t have the courage to, and the result is a kind of notebook of images that takes on a very important value once pu-

“CAROLA BARRÍA” 11 de Octubre 2016 | Carola Barría (35) fue atacada por su ex pareja, quien en un arrebato de celos le sacó los ojos en presencia de su hijo de cinco meses.

Estuvo a punto de morir desangrada en la calle, pero afortunadamente un transeúnte la encontró refugiada en una zanja. Hoy, Carola tiene prótesis oculares y ha aprendido a desenvolverse en la ceguera. A finales del 2013 se tituló de educadora de párvulos y actualmente se encuentra trabajando y cuidando a sus dos hijos.

“CAROLA BARRÍA” October 11, 2016 | Carola Barria (35) was attacked by her ex-boyfriend, who in a fit of jealousy, gouged her eyes out in the presence of her 5-month-old son. She was close to bleeding to death in the street, but fortunately a passerby found her lying in a ditch. Today, Carola has prosthetic eyes and has learned to cope with her blindness. At the end of 2013, she graduated with a degree in early-childhood education and is currently working and caring for her two children.

Javier Duarte de Ochoa, quien fuera gobernador del Estado de Veracruz, se fugó el 12 de octubre bajo los cargos de lavado de dinero, participación en el crimen organizado y entregar contratos a empresas fantasmas, entre otras acusaciones. Desde el 2012 han asesinado a 19 periodistas (fotógrafos incluidos), sólo en el Estado de Veracruz. El país registra hasta la fecha al menos 26 mil desapariciones, siendo los Estados de Tamaulipas, Veracruz y Guerrero, los que lideran las estadísticas.

“THE OLD JAROCHO” During the era of Mexico’s independence, the “jarochos” were black soldiers whose role was to guard the coastline with spears and arrows to defend the ruling Spanish regime. Javier Duarte de Ochoa, who was governor of the state of Veracruz, escaped on October 12 having been charged with money laundering, involvement in organized crime and awarding false public contracts to ghost companies, among other accusations. Since 2012, 19 journalists (including photojournalists) have been murdered, just in the state of Veracruz. To date, there have been at least 26,000 disappearances reported, with the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Guerrero leading the list on this type of statistics.

“CARRERAS DE GALGOS” Las carreras de perros galgos son instancias recreativas que convocan a un público en torno a apuestas en efectivo. Generalmente corren dos perros y los desafíos se establecen entre los criadores. Las canchas utilizadas en estas competencias miden entre 200 y 250 metros de largo y al igual que en las carreras a la chilena de caballos, existe un “veedor” que emite los resultados, apoyándose con cámaras fotográficas.

Las carreras de galgos se realizan habitualmente los días sábados y domingos y constan de 36 carreras que duran entre cinco y seis horas. Por lo general, el público asistente es 150 a 200 personas.

“GREYHOUND RACING” Greyhound races are leisure activities that draw a large crowd due to cash betting. Generally, two dogs race at a time and the challenges are set by the breeders.

The fields used in these competitions measure between 200 and 250 meters long and just like in Chilean bareback horse racing, there is a “seer” that issues the results, supported by cameras. Greyhound racing usually takes place on Saturdays and Sundays and consists of 36 races lasting 5-6 hours. The turnout is usually between 150 - 200 people.

Carlos Santibáñez, mejor conocido como Chiko Pelvis, fue asesinado a tiros frente a sus amigos. Al velorio y funeral asistieron diferentes tribus urbanas a las cuales pertenecía, integrantes de la barra brava del club Colo Colo -que lanzaron fuegos artificiales y pintaron murales-, bandas de música punk y algunos amigos cercanos que aspiraron cocaína sobre el ataúd. Su pareja y sus hijos fueron testigos de las numerosas muestras de cariño.

Carlos Santibáñez, better known as Chiko Pelvis, was gunned down in front of his friends. In attendance at the wake and funeral were several of the different urban tribes to which he belonged, members of the Colo Colo Fan Club –which shot of fireworks and painted walls-, punk music bands and a few close friends that snorted cocaine off his coffin. His girlfriend and children were witness to the various demonstrations of affection.

12 de Mayo 2016 | Durante el segundo trimestre del 2016, el vertimiento de salmones en descomposición frente a las costas del Archipiélago de Chiloé dio origen al fenómeno conocido como Marea Roja, provocando una masiva mortandad de fauna marina en distintos puntos de la Isla Grande. A pocas semanas de denunciado el derramamiento de desechos en las aguas del Pacífico chilote, cientos de miles de especies marinas comenzaron a varar en las costas de la isla.

A principios de mayo de 2016, una varazón de 300 toneladas de sardinas inundó Caleta La Barra, ubicada en la desembocadura del río Toltén. La comunidad pesquera realizó trabajos de limpieza, pero nuevos peces muertos llegaron a orillas de la playa, sumando un total de 500 toneladas. El trabajo de los pescadores se mantuvo paralizado durante un mes.

At the beginning of May 2016, 300 tons of sardines suddenly washed up on the shores of Caleta La Barra, located at the mouth of the Tolten River. Este relato nace en la cotidianidad. Viajé solo, sin preguntar a muchos si se animaban a acompañarme. Por suerte y como lo tenía planeado desde un principio, zarpé sin expectativa. Eran dos ciudades con 2.218 km. de distancia entre sí, Sao Paulo y Buenos Aires. El acto de deambular fue la acción más lógica para entender estas urbes que me recibieron y abrieron sus calles en las que intenté mimetizarme.

La organización del evento impulsó un fuerte operativo policial y militar para resguardar la seguridad en un país convulsionado por la destitución de la presidenta Dilma Rousseff.
