hen it comes to his wife Ivy’s gardening skills, Ricky Eilerman has real opinions and he isn’t content just letting her know how he feels.

Eilerman, an Army veteran and real estate agent, turned to the popular social media app TikTok to let the whole world know.

“How many dead plants do you have in your house? Let’s count,” he joked, while pointing to 10 plants around the couple’s Guyton home that have seen better days.

In the 50-second video, he also shows his wife who seems to be pruning a basil plant that is more stems than basil. “My wife insists on buying plants, but it’s a waste of money. That’s the one thing she doesn’t do well,” he says, saying he often sneaks her dead plants out of the house.

“Our son, who is 19, bought her a plant, a southern cactus. He told her it would be a plant that wouldn’t die. It died.”

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?

For her part, Ivy Eilerman said it’s not that she doesn’t like a pretty garden or plants, but her demanding work schedule as a mortgage company executive in Pooler doesn’t allow the time she knows a healthy garden requires. “I just can’t keep plants alive. My grandfather owned a successful family-operated, 50-acre flower nursery for many years, but I guess the gardening gene skipped me. I love plants and get excited, and then the excitement dies with the plants,” Eilerman said.

Have a Conversation with Garden Experts Before you Start Garden experts recommend homeowners have an honest discussion with their local garden center staff before beginning any gardening project to let them know their individual planting conditions. Are you growing in sun?

“If someone is designing a landscape, putting the right plants in the right place is key,” said Dr. Timothy S. Davis, coordinator of the University of Georgia’s Chatham County Extension Office, which also operates a consumer call center.

“Consider the adult size of the plant and give it the appropriate space. You won’t have to prune anything if you give the appropriate amount of space in the first

place. Consider environmental needs of the plants like how much sun, how much shade, how much water is needed. Some plants have more or less requirements – getting this right avoids most issues.”

Davis also advises busy gardeners to choose low maintenance plants and when it comes to grasses, choose a turfgrass such as centipede grass that needs to be mowed every five to seven days rather than Bermuda grass that needs to be mowed every three days.

He also suggests investing in an irrigation system that uses technology such as soil probes to automatically irrigate when the soil reaches a certain level of dryness and turns off when the proper level of soil moisture is achieved.

Polk’s Produce and Plants Has Decades of Experience Advising Busy Gardeners For Becky Polk-Bashlor—whose family has a 70-plus year history of selling flowers and produce mostly in Savannah and, in the last decade, Pooler, where she operates Polk’s Produce and Plants and Polks on the Go, a food delivery service— her store has become a refuge of sorts for

experienced and novice gardeners this past year.

Customers can meander the outdoor garden, enjoy fresh-picked produce or even sit down to enjoy the change of scenery. Bashlor, who regularly travels nine hours back and forth to Florida to handpick most of the plants she sells, said she shops understanding that some of her buyers have time to plant their flower purchases while others enjoy them in containers or hanging baskets.

“People will come in and say ‘I don’t have a clue what to plant,’ so I will take them back and help them choose what’s best for them. If they say, ‘I don’t like to water,’ I will say stay away from the ferns.”

For her customers who are too busy to tend to plants, Bashlor recommends Hibiscus, Passion Vines, Mandevilla, Dipladenia, Loropetalum, Sage, Petunia and Geraniums, which are easier to maintain.

Since the pandemic started, Bashlor said it’s not uncommon now to see as many as 100 customers a day, but she said she loves every minute of it. “I say if you have to be stuck at home, why not make it pretty.” n

FROM THE EDITOR When Jan Southern, publisher of Pooler Magazine and Effingham Magazine decided to create a special pet section in the magazines, I was so excited. And when she asked me to be the editor, I was ecstatic.

Animals have always been dear to me but my true passion for helping homeless and rescued pets came after the death of my sweet Basset Hound, Gracie.

Gracie was my first dog. She was my best friend for so many years. When she passed over to the rainbow bridge, I was crushed. That's when a friend of mine, Patricia Manser—Owner of H.O.P.E.—encouraged me to volunteer at the Effingham County Animal Shelter. I am a photographer, so my first inclination was to take photos of the pets up for adoption to help them find forever homes.

Instantly, I was hooked. I have been committed to supporting the rescues ever since and volunteer weekly to help find forever homes for abandoned animals.

The Pooler Magazine and Effingham Magazine South Georgia Pet Insert has the same mission. While we provide fun and informative content for pet lovers and pet owners, we also support the rescue organizations in our area with financial and marketing support.

ADVICE FROM A DOG’S PERSPECTIVE WET DOG Dear Carter, My mom and especially her kids seem to get worked into a lather about my “stink” every time I get wet. She usually shouts at me to jump off the couch or go back outside. What’s the deal? By the way, I have noticed I do smell a little more, um, “ripe” when I get wet. Is there something I can do to help out my family?

When his owner brings him in, the leash is clipped to the top of the strap instead of to his collar, like my human does with me. What’s the matter with him? Is his neck hurt or something?

Dear Molly, Dogs do have a peculiar odor to many humans. Of course, to us, how things smell is the essence of how we learn about the world. We never use deodorant, but most humans do this every day. But they really don’t understand smells that well. Their sense of “strong” pales compared to ours. If only they could imagine smelling everything within a two-block radius all the time like us!

There is, however, a time when a dog’s odor is indicative of something wrong and you should have that checked out by a vet if they smell something strange. But if it just “dog” smell after getting wet, they can try rubbing you down with a towel. That helps a lot. They can also lather you up for more baths more often but not more than once a week for any dog.

Many vets recommend once per month.

Dear Colin, Many dogs and their owners decide to use different types of collars when walking on a leash. Some smaller dogs have a problem with what is called a “collapsing trachea.” If these dogs are walked on a leash with just a regular collar and they tend to pull, they could choke. Lots of dogs pull when they are walked, and the harness-type collars are a good idea for those dogs.

Constantly pulling on a collar round your neck can cause severe damage to your airway and throat. If you think this might be a problem for you or a friend, have your human talk to a vet about it.

CHANGE OF SCENERY AND ACTIVITIES It’s not a secret that dogs love the great outdoors. As the weather warms, it’s time to start thinking about breaking your dog away from the same old routine. Consider trying a new dog park, walking trail or taking him on more car rides with you. Your morning coffee run might be a fun adventure and a good way to help your pup start his day, especially if your local coffee shop has dog treats, too. This change of routine and scenery can leave him feeling energized to take on the day with you.

in Tin Tin is perhaps most fondly remembered as the highly intelligent, German Shepherd Dog star of the television series, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, first aired on ABC from 1954 to 1959. In fact, Rin Tin Tin is an 108-yearold canine lineage; a historic bloodline dating back to World War I. The Rin Tin Tin legacy would not exist were it not for the passion and dedication of Corporal Lee Duncan, and Duncan's insistence on his battalion checking out a bombed war dog kennel in Lorraine, France on September 15, 1918. The two, five-day-old puppies rescued by Duncan, were named after tiny French pup-

pets that children gave to the American soldiers for good luck. The brother and sister progeny of Betty des Flandres and Fritz de la Chasse Royale, were named Rin Tin Tin and Nannette.

Duncan was enamored by the performance of the German war dogs, and their feats became the model for Rin Tin Tin's and Nanette's training. Duncan went so far as visiting the imprisoned German kennel master to learn more about the German Shepherd Dog breed.

Duncan had named one of the puppies Junior. Although not the image of his father, Junior was a good dog and Duncan was persuaded to take a tour, in 1933, promoting him as the son of Rin Tin Tin. Junior was the first dog to take a commercial air flight and would go on to win the hearts of fans across America and abroad.

At the onset of World War II, Rin Tin Tin III and his master became head trainers at Camp Hahn, California—the training camp for military dogs initiated by Duncan. Rin Tin Tin III was an enlisted soldier—with his number tattooed on his leg—and trained 5,000 dogs and handlers. After the war, dogs were re-trained, or untrained, so they may be returned to the families who had donated them for the war effort.

Duncan concentrated on the development, progress and betterment of the German Shepherd breed as a whole. He was listed as breeder of Champion Tasso of Villa Marina, Register of Merit, the grandson of International Champion Grand Victor Odin von Buescher Schloss, FH (herding) and the 1936 SV (German) Champion. Odin was the grandsire of the dog registered as Rin Tin Tin II by Duncan. It was Rin Tin Tin II and his son Rin Tin Tin IV that appeared in the television series of the 50s.

KENJO LÓPEZ-ALT. www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2015/09/ carne-asada-food-lab-recipe-kenji.html INGREDIENTS 3 whole dried ancho chilies, stems and seeds removed (see note) 3 whole dried guajillo chilies, stems and seeds removed (see note) 2 whole chipotle peppers, canned in adobo 3/4 cup fresh juice from 2 to 3 oranges, preferably sour oranges 2 tbsp fresh juice 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp Asian fish sauce, such as Red Boat 6 medium cloves garlic 1 small bunch cilantro, leaves and tender stems only, divided 1 tbsp whole cumin seed, toasted and ground 1 tbsp whole coriander seed, toasted and ground 2 tbsp dark brown sugar Kosher salt 2 pounds skirt steak (2 to 3 whole skirt steaks), trimmed and cut with the grain into 5- to 6-inch lengths (see note) Warm corn or flour tortillas, lime wedges, diced onion, fresh cilantro, and avocado, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place dried ancho and guajillo chilies on a microwave-safe plate and microwave until pliable and toasty-smelling, 10 to 20 seconds. Transfer to the jar of a blender and add chipotle peppers, orange juice, lime juice, olive oil, soy sauce, fish sauce, garlic, cilantro, cumin seed, coriander seed, and brown sugar. Blend until a smooth, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt. Transfer half of the salsa to a large bowl and the other half to a sealed container. Set aside the sealed container in the refrigerator.

2. Add an extra 2 tsp of salt to the salsa in the bowl. It should taste slightly saltier than is comfortable to taste. Add 1 piece of steak to bowl and turn to coat. Transfer to a gallon-sized zipper-lock bag with the top folded over to prevent excess sauce and meat juices from contaminating the seal.

Repeat with remaining steak, adding it all to the same bag. Pour any excess marinade over the steak. Squeeze all air out of the bag and seal. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours and up to overnight.

3. When ready to cook, remove the extra salsa from the fridge to allow it to warm up a little. Light one chimney full of charcoal. When all the charcoal

is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and arrange the coals on one side of the charcoal grate. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill, and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Alternatively, set half the burners on a gas grill to the highest heat setting, cover, and preheat for 10 minutes. Clean and oil the grilling grate.

4. Remove steak from marinade and wipe off excess. Place directly over the hot side of the grill. If using a gas grill, cover; if using a charcoal grill, leave exposed. Cook, turning occasionally, until steak is well charred on outside and center registers 110°F on an instant-read thermometer, 5 to 10 minutes total. Transfer to a cutting board and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Slice thinly against the grain and serve immediately, passing extra salsa, lime wedges, avocado, onions, cilantro, and tortillas on the side.

Notes: I like ancho and guajillo chilies here, but a mix of chilies such as negro, pasilla, and California can be used in their place. An equivalent weight of hanger or flap steak can be used in place of skirt steak.

INSTRUCTIONS 1 Place the potatoes into a large pot with water to cover. Bring to a boil and cook over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, or until tender.

2 Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Drain potatoes and toss with olive oil, black pepper, rosemary and salt to taste.

3 Place the potatoes skin-side down over indirect heat on the grill and reserve liquid. Grill for about 15 minutes. Remove potatoes to a serving plate and sprinkle with the reserved olive oil mixture.

ne of our true local treasures is right at our doorstep. Our Savannah National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is home to an incredible amount of wildlife, plant diversity and local history within its 30,000 acres, and it is convenient and free to visit! Spread across two states—Chatham and Effingham counties in Georgia and Jasper County in South Carolina—the refuge is a popular spot for hikers, bird watchers and nature photographers.

The Savannah NWR contains a multitude of habitats such as freshwater marshes, tidal rivers and creeks, and bottomland hardwoods. The hardwood trees are primarily cypress, gum, and maple— trees not found in most areas anymore.

Because the Savannah River and other smaller rivers run through the refuge, it is able to support an enormous array of wildlife. Deer, bobcats, fox, otters and alligators all make it their home. Birders come from far and wide to catch sight of the huge variety of resident and migratory birds that populate the refuge.

In addition to being a wildlife habitat, the Savannah NWR is a significant historical location with 36 historic and prehistoric archeological sites that have been located and inventoried. For thousands of years, Native Americans both occupied and passed through the area and 30

by the mid-18th century, rice planters were farming much of the land. The old rice levees—built by hand—form the basis for the current impoundment dikes that are an important part of the eco system today.

Remnants of the original structures can still be seen in some places.

National Wildlife Refuge Designation The Savannah NWR was originally established in 1927 as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds. In 1931, another 207 acres were added to the refuge and it was named the Savannah River Wildlife Refuge. In 1936 an additional 6,527 acres were added to the refuge and on July 25, 1940, it was renamed the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

As with the National Park system, the first National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt. An ardent conservationist, he would go on to create 50 more federal bird reserves and four national game preserves within the refuge system.

Refuges are not the same as national or state parks. They are designated conservation areas with minimal development used mainly for wildlife observation, photography, education, hunting and fishing. Camping is not permitted at refuges. Although refuges are

primarily ‘left alone’ refuge management will step in to help restore natural habitats if necessary.

The Savannah NWR is one of seven refuges administered by the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex, headquartered in Hardeeville SC. The seven refuges span a 100-mile stretch of coastline and total 57,226 acres.

Wildlife Abound The Savannah NWR is birders paradise. As a safe fly-over and rest stop during spring and fall bird migration, the Savannah NWR is an important link in the chain of wildlife refuges along the Atlantic Flyway. It provides nesting habitat for wood ducks, purple gallinules, bald eagles, anhingas, and swallow-tailed kites, among many others. Wood Storks, federally endangered, forage here. Redcoakaded Woodpeckers and Least Terns, also endangered, nest here. Thousands of waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and colonial waterbirds use the refuge yearround and seasonally. You truly never know what bird you may see here!

The American alligator lives in the refuge wetlands and although they are considered dangerous, they typically pose no serious threat if left alone. It is a violation of state and federal law to feed or harass alligators in any way.

Bobcats have been spotted throughout the year at various spots along the refuge's wildlife drive and adjacent trails. Bobcats are elusive and nocturnal and therefore rarely spotted by humans.

Impoundment Improvement Managed freshwater impoundments are tidal freshwater marshes that have been diked and "impounded" in order to grow vegetation through water control.

The impoundments at Savannah NWR are maintained for the purpose of providing habitats for waterfowl through the winter as they migrate.

At the refuge, phase one of the repair and renovation of the 3,000-acre freshwater impoundment system is reaching completion, and in September 2021, the second and more extensive part will begin. Specific improvements include elevating all dikes/levees surrounding the impoundments, deepening the perimeter and interior ditches within the impoundments, and replacing water control structures.

These measures are necessary to continue to provide vital habitat for birds and the other species that benefit from the impoundments. The elevated dikes and deeper ditches also will also provide better wildlife viewing for visitors.

Upcoming Closures Due to phase 2 of the repair and renovation plan, the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and all trails adjacent to the freshwater impoundment system that runs along both sides of SC 170 will be closed beginning September 8, 2021, until further notice. Visitors should expect closures for a period of not less than one year, and maybe two. Closed areas will be completely off-limits to all visitors (no foot, bicycle, or vehicle traffic).

As of this time, the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Hardeeville, SC, is closed due to the COVID-19 health emergency. However, many other areas on the refuge remain open, such as Kingfisher Pond and adjacent trails, the Solomon Tract, and the Visitor Center trails. In addition, Pinckney Island and Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuges are open for normal visitation. n

A

ngie Rish nourished a dream for 20 years, and today she is actually living the life she dreamed about for so long.

“It’s definitely unique, because my twenty year dream was to have my own alpaca farm,” says Angie. “I fell in love with alpacas when they were on television commercials years ago and I spent all this time doing my research and learning everything I could about them in preparation for the day I would have my own herd.”

Originally from Forsyth, Georgia, Angie has been in the Savannah area since 1998, and in Effingham since 2001. She raised five children while working at Effingham Hospital as an ultrasound technician, all the while dreaming about having a small farm of her own.

“Three years ago, I sold the family home, bought a small eight acre farm in Springfield, and moved there with two of my children who were still in high school,” she says. “I bought the property in 2017 and added the alpaca herd in March 2020.

I still work at Effingham Hospital as an ultrasound technician, and I feel very blessed to be able to work there two days a week and to also have the farm.”

Angie says the name of the farm is no accident. “Being a Christian, the name Bethany had real meaning for me. Bethany was a small village known for many things in the Bible, such as being the place where Jesus stayed on his way to Jerusalem to get crucified, home of his friends Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, and even where he raised Lazarus from the dead. Although the scene of this small town of Bethany may seem insignificant, it is ultimately where Jesus left Earth and where he will return.”

“I was looking at farms to buy and the perfect farm was located on Bethany Road.

I feel this is not a coincidence—so of course I named it Bethany Farm!”

Alpacas at Bethany Farm Part of Angie’s research included learning from the wider community of experienced alpaca owners. Two farms in

particular were her “alpaca mentors”— Apple Mountain Alpacas in Clarksville, GA, and Alpaca Ranch at Cobb Creek Cabins in Murphy, NC. “They were both instrumental in helping me set up the farm and my herd was purchased from their stock of alpacas,” says Angie, “It’s a wonderful community of alpaca people and these folks in particular have been extremely helpful.”

There are currently eight alpacas at Bethany Farm, five girls and three males.

“Each alpaca is unique,” says Angie. “The females are Maddie, Abby, Niqua, Star, Dulci, and the males are Dixson, Livewire and Bandit. The farm also includes angora goats and mini horses. The goats are sheared annually for their mohair fiber and the horses are being trained to pull carts.

“All the animals have uses and jobs!”

Alpaca Fun Facts Alpacas are in camelids, from the camel family, and were originally imported to the USA from Peru. For most owners, raising alpacas is primarily a fiber business.

They are very quiet, docile animals that generally make only a pleasant humming sound as a means of communication.

They do occasionally spit, but only to each other—not people—when they are in distress, fearful, or want to show dominance.

They have a three-chambered stomach, like goats and sheep, and they chew their cud. Alpacas like treats such as apples and carrots, but the bulk of their diet is hay and grain.

Alpacas are social herd animals that live in family groups, and when one goes into the pasture the others will inevitably follow.

They are not pets, but Angie says, “Out of my herd, the little guy Dixson who was born here has a very sweet personality, so he is the closest to a pet.”

Angie says her alpacas are temperamentally pleasant and don’t bite or butt. “They only have lower teeth so they actually can’t bite people,” she says, “and they move pretty gracefully so they won’t run you—or small children—over.”

Baby alpacas are called “cria” and normally weigh between 15 and 19 pounds.

They are usually standing and nursing within 90 minutes of birth.

Angie says alpacas are very smart animals and are fairly easy to train. “It is best to start training them when they are young so that they will accept a halter and learn to follow on a lead.”

Biggest misconception?

“They are not llamas! Alpacas are part of the camel family and are smaller than llamas. Llamas are primarily used for packing or for guarding herds of sheep or alpacas, whereas alpacas are primarily raised for their fleece.”

As part of the farm’s educational component, Angie created an “alpaca trail’ with informational signs. “I put up little signs on our alpaca trail, such as a baby is called a cria, alpacas are part of the camel family, and they are not llamas!”

Alpaca Fiber Alpacas are typically sheared once or twice a year and each shearing produces approximately 5 to 10 pounds of fiber per alpaca. Alpaca wool is prized for its softness and resiliency. The fleece doesn’t contain lanolin (unlike sheep’s wool) and is considered easy to handle. Many hand spinners, knitters, weavers, and textile artists prefer the alpaca fleece, which has 16 official colors, many of which can be custom dyed in a variety of colors.

Bethany Farm shears their herd twice a year—spring and fall—and the fleece is sent out for processing.

“Nicole Taylor at Spirit Fiber Works processes the fleece, which is spun into functional fiber that I then use for crafts and products that are for sale seasonally at the farm,” says Angie.

Textile arts was something new for Angie after obtaining her alpaca herd. She says, “I never really created any crafts or artwork, but I caught on to the uses of alpaca fiber and found I really like creating fiber arts.”

Angie has currently has dryer balls, bird nesting balls, socks, needle and wet felting

items and kits for sale with plans to have crocheted items for sale in the near future.

Farm Happenings New in 2021, Farm Tours are now held on the first Saturday of every month from 2:00 - 4:00pm. You can book tours online, by emailing or by calling.

Angie says, “We can also arrange Field Trips for groups outside of the Saturday tours, just give me a call or send an email and I will be happy to discuss it with you. I love field trips and do many for homeschooled kids. I have also hosted tours for autistic children, which have gone really well. I love my alpacas and I love seeing other people enjoy them!”

She will also be hosting “Fun with Felt”—fiber art classes using alpaca fiber with dates to be announced. Check the website for updates.

The first Fall Farm Fun Day was held in Oct 2020 and the second annual Fall Farm Fun Day is scheduled for October 16 and 17, 2021. Visitors can pet and feed the alpacas, horses, goats, and chickens. There will also be mini horse cart rides, hayrides, picture props and games. Food will be available on site and the farm store will be open.

“The first Farm Fun Day was really great,” says Angie, “and we will be even better this year. So bring the family and enjoy!”

A Dream Achieved.

After 20 years of planning, Angie is thoroughly enjoying her new life on the farm with her alpaca herd. When asked what she enjoys the most she answers, “It’s not a way to get rich quick! I just enjoy it all. I grew up in Forsyth, Georgia, not on a farm but my friends had farms, so I took a liking to farm life at a young age. I would rather be with animals anywhere; in fact, you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to live in a city. I consider myself to be a ‘boots on’ country girl! I love my animals and the farm life, but I am also a big people person, so I like to share them. It’s truly the best part of me.” n

THE TOP 10 GLAMPING & CAMPING SPOTS AT GEORGIA STATE PARK CAMPGROUNDS

ummer is just around the corner and it’s time to get outside! Why stay in a hotel when you can pitch a tent or enjoy a cozy cabin? Campsites, cabins, lodges and now yurts are found at many of Georgia’s beautiful state parks. The campsites range from tent, trailer, and RV campsites to the more primitive “Pioneer” sites as well as several backcountry campsites that must be reached by hiking.

Single cabins are available at nearly 30 state parks. Ranging from functional to historic, all cabins have heat and air conditioning, and most are equipped with stoves and refrigerators. Far from primitive, many have televisions, screened porches or decks and wood burning fireplaces or stoves. Lodges—with hotel like accommodations—can be found at five different Georgia State Parks.

Glamping in Yurts & Premier Cabins Camping plus Glamour= Glamping!

Glamping has become very popular and bridges the gap between traditional camping and the comforts of home.

Balancing comfort with adventure, it’s a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors without roughing it too much.

The Georgia State Park system has embraced the idea and has added the glampers accommodation of choice—the exotic yurt—to six different state parks.

Yurts are the newest addition to the state park system. An enclosed circular structure made of wood and canvas, they have rigid walls, large, screened windows and locking doors. The yurts at the state parks sleep six and are equipped with furniture, electrical outlets, ceiling fans and a small heater. Some even have air conditioning. At the park campgrounds, they feature a deck, picnic table, water spigot and a grill/fire ring outside—a perfect setting for a glamping trip.

In addition to yurts, many parks have “Premier Cabins” and can be considered glamping destinations as well.

With one exception, the campgrounds listed below are all Georgia State Parks, and the distance to each is calculated from Pooler.

So load up the sleeping bags and s’mores and go enjoy the great outdoors!

Fort McAllister State Park Campground, Richmond Hill, GA (40 min.)

Fort McAllister State Park is located on the south bank of the Ogeechee River, about 10 miles south of Savannah. Launch your boat off the nearby dock or take a stroll through the giant oaks and palm trees. 7 cottages, 67 tent, trailer & RV campsites, and 2 backcountry campsites (1.5-mile hike to sites).

George L. Smith State Park Campground, Twin City, GA (1 hr.)

George L. Smith State Park is best known for the refurbished Parrish Mill and Pond, a combination gristmill, sawmill, covered bridge, and dam built in 1880.

Kayaking, canoing, and hiking the seven miles of trail are popular activities. 8 newly renovated cottages, 24 tent, trailer & RV campsites, and 4 primitive campsites.

Hunting Island State Park Campground, Hunting Island SC (1.5 hrs.)

This is the only park outside Georgia on our list and it’s the only beach park.

Located in nearby South Carolina, the large campsites overlook the ocean and are shaded by pines and palms with the ocean just a short boardwalk away. With miles of shoreline, a historic lighthouse, and a maritime forest, it is pure paradise.

Magnolia Springs State Park Campground, Millen, GA (1.5 hrs.)

Magnolia Springs State Park is known for its crystal clear springs and boardwalk—allowing visitors to look for alligators, turtles, and other wildlife near the springs. The 28-acre lake is great for fishing and boating. 9 cottages, 26 tent, trailer, & RV campsites, 3 walk-in tent campsites, and a pioneer campground.

Stephen C. Foster State Park, Fargo, GA (3 hrs.)

This remote park is a primary entrance to the Okefenokee Swamp. Alligators, turtles, raccoons, black bears, deer, ibis, herons, wood storks, red-cockaded woodpeckers and numerous other wildlife live or migrate through the 402,000-acre refuge. Canoing, kayaking, motorboats, boat tours, fishing, hiking, camping,

stargazing, and bicycling are all popular activities. 9 cottages, 66 tent, trailer & RV campsites, 1 pioneer campground.

GLAMPING OPTIONS Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, GA (30 min.)

At Skidaway Island State Park, walking trails lead to a boardwalk and observation tower. The campground features three new “glamping cottages.” The new cabins have screened porches, hot showers, air conditioning, microwaves, coffeemakers, stoves, and comfortable beds. Outside are picnic tables, grills, and fire rings. 3 cabins, 87 tent, trailer & RV campsites, and 3 pioneer campgrounds.

Crooked River State Park, St. Marys, GA (1.5 hrs.)

On the southern tip of Georgia’s Colonial Coast, this park is the perfect spot for enjoying the Intracoastal Waterway and maritime forest. There is a boat ramp and the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore is close by. You may see gopher tortoises, fiddler crabs, herons, and other birds. 11 cottages including several premier cottages, 63 tent, trailer & RV campsites, and 1 pioneer campground.

Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge, McRae-Helena, GA (2 hrs.)

Little Ocmulgee State Park & Lodge has it all, from a private pool to the 265 Little Ocmulgee Lake. The Wallace Adams Golf Course is located on premises

High Falls State Park, Jackson, GA (2 hrs. 45 min.)

Located northwest of Macon, High Falls State Park is named for tumbling cascades on the Towaliga River. Boat rental, ramps and fishing docks provide easy access to the park’s lake, a top fishing spot for hybrid and white bass. Visitors can hike along the river’s edge to the remains of a hydroelectric power plant foundation.
