“The ER team at
Effingham Health System saved my daughter’s foot.
”
“My daughter Kaylan ripped off her toe and side of her foot playing on a pool slide. We took her to Effingham County Hospital ER because it was close. I didn’t realize the level of care that we would receive. We thought she was going to lose the side of her foot. But they took over, calmed us, assessed her injuries, then fixed her foot. She’s already back playing soccer. We have never been treated better at a hospital than at Effingham Health System.”

Merriam-Webster defines the word “success” as “favorable outcome” and “one that succeeds.” Entrepreneurship gurus tell us we have to find what success means for us as individuals. Shifting from being an executive in the “corporate” world to now running my own business, I have had to dramatically change my personal definition of success. Success takes many forms. There is no one size fits all. Being a woman in business means defining success on our own terms. The number of women-owned businesses has increased by Jan Southern roughly 60% in the past decade. This is something we can all be proud of, but it doesn’t minimize the challenges and obstacles we face as we balance our professional and personal lives in order to achieve our personal versions of success. In this issue we set out to celebrate the women in Effingham County who work to build their businesses and their families, build other women up and strengthen our community.

housing within the community and addressing housing diversity in general.” United Way is focusing on these areas in a collective nature by partnering with others to serve, research and advocate for those in need. One such collaboration is a newly formed group, Housing and Opportunities for People in Effingham (HOPE), that works toward preventing homelessness and advocating for sustainable housing in Effingham County. New Strategic Plan After an extensive strategic planning process engaging more than 400 community members representing all of United Way of the Coastal Empire’s constituencies, the organization is committing to building stronger, deeper, and wider community partnerships. Elizabeth says, “We recently drafted and
approved a new strategic plan, and we narrowed it down to four bold goals in order to make a more intentional focus on Safety Net and Upward Mobility.” The focus on Safety Net is not new to United Way as that is why they were founded, by the community for the community, to aid people through all kinds of storms. With Upward Mobility in mind, this plan recommends a more explicit focus to include goal-setting in four proposed areas: 1. Quality, Affordable Childcare 2. Ready & Resilient Workforce 3. Financially Empowered Families 4. Safe & Stable Housing Elizabeth says, “We have four bold goals and a strategic plan that will in turn generate action for the next three to five

years. Having not only survived but thrived through the adversity of the past year, we are excited to move our focus to being Forward United. The future is bright, and we are blessed to be in a position to support and improve our community.” This community-focused plan will build partnerships across sectors to bring innovation, quality, and the determined measurable results to some of our region’s toughest problems. United Way will need the wisdom and will of key partners, as well as financial support and volunteer leadership from all caring citizens in the Coastal Empire. Living UNITED, we will strengthen the Coastal Empire region for our children and grandchildren. (from the United Way Strategic Plan)
A Good Fit In addition to her role at United Way, Elizabeth also serves at many other community organizations. Her volunteer activities include Board member with Effingham County Victims Assistance Program, Board Treasurer with Effingham Back Pack Buddies, Secretary for Rotary Club of Effingham, Events and Planning committee for Effingham County Chamber of Commerce, member of Springfield United Methodist Church and member of Springfield UMC’s Missions Committee.
She says her work has “afforded me the opportunity to meet so many people and appreciate and value the diversity we have here in our community.” Happy Place “My happy place is being Mom to my two boys, ages twelve and three,” Elizabeth says. “We love going to the beach, going camping and spending time with friends and family. That’s what is most important to me—friends an family.”

HEATHER WRIGHT: Finding a Sense of Purpose Through Candle Making
H
eather Wright’s popular candle and gift shop is located in charming old town Springfield, GA. She creates her candles in her shop using artisanal methods—hand pouring small batch candles with a blend of soy and coconut wax, while pairing them with the finest wicks to give a clean burning, fragrant experience. Although they only opened last December, the shop has been so well received that they outgrew their original store and are in the process of moving into a larger space. “The new studio and the retail space is much larger, enabling us to really expand our product lines, the Men’s Corner and new Kid’s Corner,” says Heather. In addition to candles, they carry wax melts, wax melt warmers, dough bowls and a new line of bath & body care products such as bath bombs, soaps, body scrubs & body butters.
She was told it was just stress. “I wasn’t getting any better, I was referred to a neurologist who ordered an MRI and MRA of my neck and head.” Heather’s injury created a dissected carotid artery, and they found two very dangerous brain aneurysms. “It was very frightening. family decided to travel throughout the country visiting relatives. They went to Colorado, Michigan, Georgia, and Texas. They fell in love with Georgia and made the decision to relocate. “We came here, found a cute little house, and I started making candles in my kitchen, which I was giving away as gifts.” Heather originally planned on selling her handmade candles at farmer’s markets, pop up shops etc., but at the urging of her husband, family, and friends they found a retail space in Springfield. In December they opened Wright’s Wicks Candle Co. The fragrances she uses in her products are extremely special to her and to her customers. The aroma of eucalyptus and spearmint is very therapeutic for Heather, along with lavender and other scents. One of her most popular items is the wooden dough bowls, and her popular fragrances such are Tropical Volcano, Welcome Home, and Tobacco. They make wonderful gifts for teachers, grads, family, friends, or yourself. Heather says, “It brings me joy to make candles and it brings me joy to share them with others. I hope people love using them as much as I love making them.” n

DARCY GIAQUINTO CrossFit GroundSpeed Darcy has been in business for 9 years and in the fitness industry for more than 25 years. Why do you love what you do? “I love watching the process of transformation in people’s lives. Watching confidence be built, mindsets be strengthened, and building people up physically, mentally and emotionally far stronger than they ever thought they could be.” What is your key to success? “Commitment. Being committed to my community of fitness, committed to my core values and implementing them in my everyday life and commitment to God as He is the ultimate key to success.”

DETRA THOMAS Owner, Wiley’s Home Center
Dee Moncrief is the associate broker for Sherman Hemstreet Real Estate in Springfield. Dee has been in business for 23 years.
Wiley’s has been an area staple for more than 34 years. Detra is grateful and attributes their success to the support of Rincon, and surrounding communities.
Why do you love what you do? Being a part of one of the most important financial decisions a family makes gives me a sense of accomplishment for a job well done. But being part of the emotional decision a family makes, either in purchasing or selling their home gives me a true sense of value for having assisted someone to another stage in their journey.
Why do you love what you do? I love what I do because it is fresh and new everyday. There are always new styles, new ideas and new customers. Our old and new customers are loyal to us and we feel like they are part of our extended family. It’s definitely a physical job. We all get our workout by moving and shifting furniture constantly from the floor to the delivery trucks. The staff and I have a lot of fun and it is never a dull moment. The team is truly part of our family.
What is your key to success? Experience, market knowledge and compassion.
What is your key to success? Treat folks the way you want to be treated and surround yourself with a devoted staff who share the same goals and values.
MONICA HESTER Owner, Hester Business Solutions, Inc & Working for a Purpose Foundation Monica provides financial services to businesses. She has been in the industry for 21 years. She is also the founder of Working for a Purpose, a nonprofit organization serving single family households—a mission that has always been on her heart. Why do you love what you do? I love educating businesses on smarter ways to process payments while helping them increase their bottom line. As for the nonprofit, I love this space because I meet people at their lowest point, when they’re in the darkness and we help allow them to see there is a way. There is someone here to listen, give and support them in their time of need. I love knowing that by helping this one person it can become a chain effect in our community. What are your keys to success? Have faith in God and never give up! 20 June/July 2021 | www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com
JENNIFER VANGILLER Owner/Operator of South Fork Provisions
MELISSA MCBRIDE STILLE Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage, LLC
Jennifer and her husband Joe own South Fork Provisions, prepared meals to go and food market. They have been in business for 2 years but in the food industry for 24 years.
Melissa has been an independent insurance agent for three years. She has been in the health insurance industry for 13 years with a main focus on Medicare.
Why do you love what you do? I love knowing that our business is able to help out our community by providing prepared meals. Being able to feed people is a true southern hospitality tradition that encompasses who we are at SFP. It's an honor to do what we do and be blessed by our customers each week.
Why do you love what you do? I love helping people who don't know the industry. Through the years when someone works, they usually have an HR person to help guide them but when someone retires, they often lose that point of contact and don't know what their next steps are. I like being that next step. Education is key so I give my clients the education on what their next steps/options are and then let them make an educated decision.
What is your key to success? Building genuine relationships with my customers is one of the most important factors to the success of South Fork Provisions. Putting out good quality food is a close second!
What are your keys to success? Always do what is right for my clients. I work for my clients NOT for an insurance company.
MISTY M SEALE, DMD iHeart Dental Dr. Seale is the dentist behind iHeart Dental in Rincon. iHeart Dental has been in business two years. She has been in the dental industry for seven years. Why do you love what you do? I love helping people and I love transforming lives along the way. Life is a journey and I love to give back to the community through dentistry. It gives me great joy to see someone's life change through their smile. Dentistry is one of the best jobs in the world because you are a doctor, a technician, a sculptor and an artist, as well as a teacher, therapist, engineer and a life coach at the same time. It's pretty cool. What is your key to success? 1. Create and communicate your vision with love and compassion. 2. Find people with similar views who understands your passion and in turn make your vision part of their vision. 3. Build a great team and maintain great energy thus keeping negativity away. 4. Love what you do and do what you love, and never lose sight of your goals.

I love helping and meeting people! What is your key to success? Family First! I promise each of my clients as they have adopted me as not only their agent/broker, but as an extended family member, that my team and I will take care of their insurance needs as we do for our parents, siblings, children, grandparents etc. Once clients adopt us, they never leave us! www.EFFINGHAMMAGAZINE.com | June/July 2021 21

Darrell Dasher grew up in the Sand Hill area, so managing the Rincon office of Yates-Astro really is “home” for him. He gives back to his hometown by officiating sports events for all age groups in and around Effingham County. His influence goes beyond our area through his involvement as a Shriner and a Mason. Shriner Hospitals for children never charge for their services, a blessing that is the result of the work of Darrell and many others. The Children’s Home in Macon is an outgrowth of his volunteer work as well. Darrell considers it a form of “giving back” to his hometown by protecting area homes and businesses as a pest control professional with Yates-Astro. It is hometown people like Darrell Dasher who have made Yates-Astro, a family owned local business, the largest pest control provider in the region.

IVY EILERMAN Angel Oak’s Local Point Person
I
n the male-dominated mortgage industry, where—according to statistics—women occupy only 32 percent of top positions, Ivy Eilerman said she knows how fortunate she is. Eilerman, who serves as part of the elite president’s club of the Atlanta-based Angel Oak Home Loans, runs the firm’s Pooler office, where she is the branch manager. “Ivy is a top producer who is well known with a great reputation,” said LeighAnn Wheeler, Marketing Director for Angel Oak Home Loans. “She works with clients with ease and poise and is a great loan officer.” Nurturer by Nature Eilerman has built a great reputation inside and outside of the company, which she attributes to having an instinctual and deep-rooted care that comes from being next to the oldest and eldest daughter of six siblings, in which she was sister and caretaker and developed her “mothering skills,” she said. That nurture and sense of responsibility followed her into the workplace. “My care and concern grew into 100-percent, word-of-mouth support for my business,” Eilerman said. “It’s very humbling so many trust me.” Eilerman said she is trusted because she
is honest with her customers and doesn’t tell them what they want to hear, but she tells them what they need to hear in order get a home loan approved. “My approach is to be cautious because we don’t want to break people’s hearts. We like to seek and destroy any threats in the beginning.” The result is that almost all her customers’ loans are approved because she puts in the work in the beginning. Winning Awards is a Team Effort While Eilerman can point to 18 awards she has that she houses between her office and her Guyton home, she insists none of them are because of her extraordinary work. She credits her team for every one of her awards. “I love what I do, but I have an amazing team that makes me look good. They sing my praises and I sing theirs.” Eilerman said her positive outlook comes from her faith. Every morning, she and her husband, Ricky, a real estate agent, and their three children, Cody, 20; Caden, 10; and Grace, 9, start their day off with reading Bible verses. That start, she said, gives her fuel for the day. Focus on Family and Friends Eilerman spends her free time with her large family who lives close by. It’s not
uncommon for 17 family members to go to a movie or spend time together on a beach. But when it’s just Eilerman and her husband, the two often spend time with friends on the couple’s porch where Eilerman, an accomplished singer, can belt out songs from Martina McBride to Reba McIntire, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston with ease. If she wasn’t in the mortgage business, Eilerman said she would be a professional singer. Coming out of one the most profitable years in her career, (Eilerman personally closed $32 million in loans for 2020), Eilerman said she has no plans to slow down; in fact, she plans to open a second branch in Effingham County at the end of the year. Eilerman said she is the first to admit that she often spreads herself too thin. “I never turn off, I just change locations.” n

YOUR SMILE SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU. SHOULDN’T IT SAY SOMETHING GREAT?
Y
our long-term oral health starts with regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings. These dental exams provide our dentists with the opportunity to not only remove any plaque and tartar buildup that at-home solutions cannot remove, but can also allow our team to spot any decay or disease. The Importance of Regular Dental Cleanings Good dental health is a combination of proper daily maintenance (brushing and flossing) along with regular visits for professional dental cleanings. Regular teeth cleanings and dental exams can not only help prevent long-term complications, but can also improve your smile and oral health. What Happens When You Don’t Schedule a Professional Cleaning The consequences of not scheduling regular teeth cleanings and dental exams are no smiling matter. There are multiple
complications that can occur if you do not visit your dentist regularly. One complication to not maintaining proper oral hygiene and care is cavities. Cavities are painful places on your teeth where decay has eaten through the enamel and exposed a tooth’s root. Diseased, crooked or missing teeth or a misshapen jaw can also: • interfere with your speech • make chewing your food properly difficult and painful • lead to expensive corrective procedures Another complication of poor oral health is gum disease, which can be mild in the initial stages, but lead to much more severe problems if untreated. Research has also linked periodontal disease to significant health problems as well. Gum disease or periodontal disease may cause • Loss of teeth • Infections • Respiratory issues • Diabetes complications • Strokes
• Dementia • Heart disease. (It has been found that gum disease increases a person’s risk of heart disease by about 20%. Also studies show that 80% of people who suffered a heart attack also had gum disease.) Professional dental cleanings and exams are critical to maintaining your smile. We offer multiple affordable dental cleaning options for patients with and without dental insurance, including our iHeart Dental Savings Club for patients who do not have coverage. Call our office in Rincon, GA at (912) 499-1133 or contact us online to schedule your next dental checkup and keep your smile bright and shiny for years to come.

If you are looking to purchase a home, this team of women will give you the time and attention necessary to find your dream home. Kim started out working a variety of industries that made it convenient to work around her children’s schedules. Once they were a little older, Kim worked in a real estate office and just two months later got her real estate license. She really loved the support and positive energy she received while taking the classes. She passed her exam, got her license and immediately began her new career. DiAnna Jenkins was a self-taught cake decorator and pastry chef, eventually moving into the marketing and advertising industry. At the prompting of her dad, DiAnna finally took the leap and got her real estate license. She is now a licensed real estate agent and holds a Brokers license in Georgia and South Carolina. Kim and DiAnna met while working in the same office back in 2008. As they
moved to different offices, their friendship developed, and they soon realized they shared common traits such as a strong work ethic and similar goals. Their personalities complement each other as well. Kim is the more social side of the business—she has very strong communication skills and interacts with the clients. DiAnna is more on the operations and technical side, handling business and marketing while also serving clients. Over the years, their friendship and partnership blossomed as they navigated life’s challenges and career obstacles brought them closer. Today they have a true partnership. When one of the women needs time away, the other picks up the slack. When they go to showings, meetings and closings, they
come as a pair. They want their clients to know both of them individually. They work together and achieve client goals together. Their business is 50/50 when it comes to costs, revenue and time. They work hard to provide the best customer service and have built a strong connection to the people in their communities—many of whom they have helped find their dream homes. hen Donna Trapani was starting her career more than 32 years ago, she lacked credit and experience with finances. The Union Camp Federal Credit Union—now Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union (GHFCU)—gave her an unsecured loan and taught her very important skills at an early age. “What big bank gives a young girl an unsecured loan?” At that point, she knew her Credit Union was special. Donna has been a resident of the Savannah area for more than 42 years and is an employee of Kraton Chemical. Kraton Chemical was formerly Union Camp. Union Camp was bought by International Paper who eventually sold the chemical portion of the company to form Kraton Chemical. Kraton develops, manufactures and markets the products that help the paper industry provide valuable products around the globe. Donna, along with her husband, has been a proud Donna Trapani employee of the company and a member of the Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union since she opened her checking account that day many years ago. Donna knows that GHFCU is a unique financial institution. Whichever of the four branches she walks into, she knows the team members will take the time to learn her name and get to know her as part of their extended Credit Union family. “Georgia Heritage has all the products and services of the big banks but with the personal attention that makes its members feel special,” says Donna. “Whether it is the competitive checking and savings rates to the rewards cards and discounts at local businesses, members can get all of their financial services needs met with one institution.” When Donna’s 78-year-old mother moved to Chatham County, Donna made sure her mother experienced the same benefits. GHFCU immediately helped her mom open a checking, savings and IRA. Donna serves as a board member for the Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and has been on the supervisory committee since 2014. She is happy to give back to GHFCU and knows that anyone who walks into one of their branches will be greeted with the same friendly smile and the opportunity to take advantage of the wonderful services GHFCU provides to all its members. SHARONDA BOWMAN: Changing Lives One Hairstyle at a Time by Walinda West
F
or 15 years, Sharonda Bowman battled Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, conditions that left her in severe pain and with an ileostomy bag that had to do the work of her colon. But when her very private struggle exposed itself in a public way through the loss and thinning of her hair, it took her on a personal journey in which the trained cosmetologist sought solutions for herself and for others who might be in the same position. “I know the pain of hair loss,” Bowman said. “Any time I touched my hair, it fell out.” In 2014, Bowman opened Salon Nevaeh in Rincon, offering customary hair services like wash and sets, haircuts and blowouts, but Bowman said her real passion is creating hairpieces for people like her who may have lost hair from medical or other conditions where the hair no longer grows or is fragile. With a client list of nearly 1,000 on the books, Bowman said she knows all of the clients and the conditions that brought them her way, and many of them are return clients. And her clients love her for what they say is her honesty and integrity. “I build relationships. As a hairstylist, it’s the equivalent of a doctor with good bedside manner except I have good chairside manner,” Bowman said. “In school, we are taught to understand our clients—their wants and needs—and over the years, I believe I have mastered that.” More Than a Hair Stylist Jesline Palmer, who has been a client of Bowman’s for 13 years and makes the 45-minute drive from Savannah—passing dozens of salons along the way to appointments with Bowman— said she wouldn’t think of going any place else. Palmer said Bowman also styles her daughter’s and mother’s hair. “She is more than a hairstylist. She is a friend,” Palmer said. Bowman said most of her clientele is African American, many of whom suffer from traction alopecia caused from pony tails or cornrows that tug on hair with extreme force, damaging the cuticle—the hard outer casing of the hair. For those clients, she may recommend wigs or other protective styles that cover the damaged hairline or give it a break while the hair recovers. Bowman said she is able to accept

insurance for hair replacement for certain conditions. She also has a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide wigs to for military veterans with hair loss as a result of medical conditions. Hair Loss is a Common Condition In general, common conditions that cause hair loss, according to the Mayo Clinic, is family history, which is the most common cause of hair loss which happens as a result of aging; hormonal changes like pregnancy, menopause or thyroid conditions; medications and supplements, where hair loss is a side effect; emotional stress; or hairstyles or treatments that stress the hair. The American Hair Loss Association estimates that 35 million men and 21 million women suffer from hair loss, which takes a tremendous toll because hair is often linked to identity, representing youth, vigor and attractiveness, experts say. “Scarred scalps often equal scarred hearts,” Bowman said, referring to her clients who look in the mirror and see bald or balding heads staring back at them. Bowman said she considers Salon Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backwards, her Christian calling. It also is that calling that fuels Bowman’s desire to volunteer her hair services in her community. For more than a decade, Bowman has given free haircuts during a back-to-school blowout event held annually at Effingham County High School. She also has volunteered at the Effingham Hospital, offering her services to patients there. Almost a Nurse A native of Guyton, Bowman lived most of her childhood in Springfield in a closeknit mobile home community. Early on, Bowman said she wanted to be a nurse after caring for her ill grandfather, but having a barber for a father and an aunt who is a cosmetologist ultimately influenced her decision to follow them into the hair field. It was a career detour, though, that led Bowman to the man who would become her husband. As a cook at Blocker’s Fine Foods in Springfield, Anthony Bowman was a frequent patron who ordered the same thing: a hamburger with ketchup and fries. “But he would order it twice a day,” she joked, later figuring out he wasn’t really there for the burger and fries, but for the person cooking the burger and fries. The rest, she said, is history and the pair have been married going on 12 years with
six children and two businesses between them; he owns Get U Right Auto Detailing. The couple lives in Rincon. Just a short distance from the couple’s home sits what is now called S Nevaeh Academy, nestled between the YMCA and Wylie’s Furniture. As you walk in the door, you are greeted with a mannequin head donning a neon yellow wig with sunglasses holding back the sides of the hair. Right behind it is another mannequin in a bright red wig. The message Bowman wants to send, she said, is just because you have to wear a wig, it does not mean you have to abandon the latest trends. “You can still be fashionable. I want you to be confident, and if you want to spiff it up, we can do that for you.” Hair School The back of the building reveals Bowman’s latest challenge in hair replacement. She has opened a school to teach students how to do what she does. Hair stations line the wall, each with shampoo bowls and everything needed to make and maintain hairpieces. Bowman opened her doors in April as S Nevaeh Beauty Academy, just one month later than she wanted. She said she received 60 applications for 25 spots. While the school has not gained federal accreditation that will allow it to benefit from student financial aid, the cost of the program is $11,000, with some scholarships available for students unable to pay the full price. The program is expected to take 50 weeks full time and 100 weeks for part-time study. At the end, students will receive all they need to take and pass Georgia’s cosmetology school licensure requirements. Zikia Sledge is one of Bowman’s new students who said she was eager to enroll in the program. Sledge, who works full time in an office setting, decided to teach herself the art of doing nails during Covid. She decided to formalize her training and drives about an hour from Statesboro into Rincon so that she can learn from Bowman. “The minute I stepped in the Academy, I enrolled. I didn’t have to talk it over and I didn’t have to sleep on it. I knew I wanted to do it,” she said. Sledge, who said she is basically camera shy and not the first to take or participate in videos, was so excited about the school that she asked to make a video. “I just wanted everybody to know how good this program is and that I am glad to be a part of it.” n

Each school class comes to the Center with a teacher and participates in an eight-week curriculum. Classroom work is conducted indoors, and riding activities are performed under a covered arena outdoors. Students, assessed at the first and final weeks of the sessions, can see significant improvement in vocabulary, posture and core strength. Faith Equestrian also holds special events, field trips for groups and summer camps for youth. Throughout the experiences at the Center, children and adults can enjoy animal interactions, grooming experience, crafts and other fun activities. KIMBERLY KICKLIGHTER
K
imberly Kicklighter is the Director of Support and Financial Manager at Kicklighter Law, married to attorney Mickey Kicklighter, and mother to their three daughters. She is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked in the financial industry. “I had the position of Communications Coordinator at the Block Trading Desk in a very fast paced office. Then I met my husband Mickey and we married in 1992. We had our three daughters right away. I said I wanted to stay home and be with the children and I did until the oldest went off to college. At that point in time Mickey came to me and said he could use some help at the office with the finances. The kids were in school all day, so I went back to work.” Kimberly says, “I really enjoy working at the law firm, where I am responsible for finances, insurance, security, marketing, support staff, you name it—I am a ‘jack of all trades’ and learn something new every day.” In addition to her regular workload, she says she works wherever needed. “If someone is out or we are short staffed, I pitch in and cover as best I can, right now I am covering the receptionist desk, helping with whatever needs to be done.” She says working with her husband on a daily basis has worked out very well. Compared to the years she worked at home as a mother and homemaker she says “Working at the office means I get to actually lay eyes on Mickey. I rarely saw him during the day before I started working here, we really only saw him on weekends. And weekends were filled with activities for our daughters, such as travel volleyball, cheerleading, etc. Mickey’s day is really demanding, and he is busy from morning to evening. After work is when we sit down and discuss the events of the day. It’s been ten years now, so I think it’s going pretty well!” Kimberly says “Kicklighter Law is truly a family business. We are a team, and this balances our lives and those around us. Our staff is wonderful, they are like family and we couldn’t do what we do without them. We can do what we do because we are working together.” Free Time After a demanding week Kimberly says, “Mickey and I like being at home, just puttering around the house. It’s very peaceful, we don’t get a lot of down time, so we treasure it. We have two Golden Retrievers—Drake and Scout—and we love to relax and enjoy playing with them.” She says her advice to women in business is what she tried to convey to their children. She says, “As my daughters grew up, I tried to instill first God and then independence so that they could always take care of themselves.” The oldest is an attorney in Atlanta, their second daughter is in biomedical engineering planning on attending medical school, and their third daughter is in college studying accounting and finance. Kimberly says, “It is so important they learn they can do anything. As I always told them, just put your mind to it, find your way, and lead your own lives.” n

THE TOP 10 GLAMPING & CAMPING SPOTS AT GEORGIA STATE PARK CAMPGROUNDS by Cindy Reid
S
ummer is just around the corner and it’s time to get outside! Why stay in a hotel when you can pitch a tent or enjoy a cozy cabin? Campsites, cabins, lodges and now yurts are found at many of Georgia’s beautiful state parks. The campsites range from tent, trailer, and RV campsites to the more primitive “Pioneer” sites as well as several backcountry campsites that must be reached by hiking. Single cabins are available at nearly 30 state parks. Ranging from functional to historic, all cabins have heat and air conditioning, and most are equipped with stoves and refrigerators. Far from primitive, many have televisions, screened porches or decks and wood burning fireplaces or stoves. Lodges—with hotel like accommodations—can be found at five different Georgia State Parks. (Visit gastateparks.org/Reservations for availability.) Glamping in Yurts & Premier Cabins Camping plus Glamour= Glamping! Glamping has become very popular and bridges the gap between traditional camping and the comforts of home. Balancing comfort with adventure, it’s a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors without roughing it too much. The Georgia State Park system has embraced the idea and has added the glampers accommodation of choice—the exotic yurt—to six different state parks. Yurts are the newest addition to the state park system. An enclosed circular structure made of wood and canvas, they have rigid walls, large, screened windows and locking doors. The yurts at the state parks sleep six and are equipped with furniture, electrical outlets, ceiling fans and a small heater. Some even have air conditioning. At the park campgrounds, they feature a deck, picnic table, water spigot and a grill/fire ring outside—a perfect setting for a glamping trip. In addition to yurts, many parks have “Premier Cabins” and can be considered glamping destinations as well. With one exception, the campgrounds listed below are all Georgia State Parks, and the distance to each is calculated from Pooler. So load up the sleeping bags and s’mores and go enjoy the great outdoors!

South Georgia Pets Your Community Resource For Your Furry Friends
FROM THE EDITOR When Jan Southern, publisher of Effingham Magazine and Pooler Magazine decided to create a special pet section in the magazines, I was so excited. And when she asked me to be the editor, I was ecstatic. Animals have always been dear to me but my true passion for helping homeless and rescued pets came after the death of my sweet Basset Hound, Gracie. Gracie was my first dog. She was my best friend for so many years. When she passed over to the rainbow bridge, I was crushed. That's when a friend of mine, Patricia Manser—Owner of H.O.P.E.—encouraged me to volunteer at the Effingham County Animal Shelter. I am a photographer, so my first inclination was to take photos of the pets up for adoption to help them find forever homes. Instantly, I was hooked. I have been committed to supporting the rescues ever since and volunteer weekly to help find forever homes for abandoned animals. The Effingham Magazine and Pooler Magazine South Georgia Pet Insert has the same mission. While we provide fun and informative content for pet lovers and pet owners, we also support the rescue organizations in our area with financial and marketing support. We hope you are as excited as we are about this new section in the magazines. We also welcome your feedback. If you would like to comment or contribute, please let me know. I can be reached at Tonya@JDelSURMarketing.com.

ADVICE FROM A DOG’S PERSPECTIVE WET DOG Dear Carter, My mom and especially her kids seem to get worked into a lather about my “stink” every time I get wet. She usually shouts at me to jump off the couch or go back outside. What’s the deal? By the way, I have noticed I do smell a little more, um, “ripe” when I get wet. Is there something I can do to help out my family? – Molly, Sausalito, CA
HARNESS VS. COLLAR Dear Carter, There’s this dog at the park that wears straps that go around his shoulders and down to his chest. When his owner brings him in, the leash is clipped to the top of the strap instead of to his collar, like my human does with me. What’s the matter with him? Is his neck hurt or something? – Colin the Collie, Clearwater, FL
Dear Molly, Dogs do have a peculiar odor to many humans. Of course, to us, how things smell is the essence of how we learn about the world. We never use deodorant, but most humans do this every day. But they really don’t understand smells that well. Their sense of “strong” pales compared to ours. If only they could imagine smelling everything within a two-block radius all the time like us! There is, however, a time when a dog’s odor is indicative of something wrong and you should have that checked out by a vet if they smell something strange. But if it just “dog” smell after getting wet, they can try rubbing you down with a towel. That helps a lot. They can also lather you up for more baths more often but not more than once a week for any dog. Many vets recommend once per month.
Dear Colin, Many dogs and their owners decide to use different types of collars when walking on a leash. Some smaller dogs have a problem with what is called a “collapsing trachea.” If these dogs are walked on a leash with just a regular collar and they tend to pull, they could choke. Lots of dogs pull when they are walked, and the harness-type collars are a good idea for those dogs. Constantly pulling on a collar round your neck can cause severe damage to your airway and throat. If you think this might be a problem for you or a friend, have your human talk to a vet about it.

GIVE YOUR DOG A REFRESH The warmer months are typically all about renewal and evaluating things that may no longer serve you, such as habits, products or routines. This can be true for your dog as well. As the season changes and you spruce up your daily habits to feel and look fresh, consider these four things that may help brighten up your pup’s spirit. Learn more at Nutro.com.
NEW DOG BED After a long year of cozying up inside, it is probably safe to say your dog’s bed could use a refresh. If you notice he retreats to the couch, floor or your bedroom for a good night’s rest, that may be a sign it is time to switch out the old for something new. Use this opportunity to gift your pet a plush and comfortable bed set. There are many options out there from donut dog beds to heated or kennel beds, so make sure you’re getting what’s best for your pup. A new bed could help brighten his mood in the morning, and after a full and active day, it can be exciting for him to have a new spot to relax.
NEW TOYS When provided with the appropriate toys, dogs can keep themselves occupied when you’re busy with work, chores or life’s daily responsibilities that can take your focus away from them. If you have noticed a drag in your pup’s energy—laying around the house, acting less excited when you come through the door or staring at you blankly when you try to play, your dog may be experiencing boredom. It may be time to give him new toys that pique his interest. As you’re doing your cleaning and shopping, make sure to swap out old toys with new ones and even have him come along on your next trip to the pet store to pick out new ones.
CHANGE OF SCENERY AND ACTIVITIES It’s not a secret that dogs love the great outdoors. As the weather warms, it’s time to start thinking about breaking your dog away from the same old routine. Consider trying a new dog park, walking trail or taking him on more car rides with you. Your morning coffee run might be a fun adventure and a good way to help your pup start his day, especially if your local coffee shop has dog treats, too. This change of routine and scenery can leave him feeling energized to take on the day with you.
NEW FOOD As the seasons change, it may be time to switch up eating habits and choose a diet that suits your lifestyle and dietary preferences. Dogs in History Rin Tin Tin:
The Legacy by Penny Paine

R
in Tin Tin is perhaps most fondly remembered as the highly intelligent, German Shepherd Dog star of the television series, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, first aired on ABC from 1954 to 1959. In fact, Rin Tin Tin is an 108-yearold canine lineage; a historic bloodline dating back to World War I. The Rin Tin Tin legacy would not exist were it not for the passion and dedication of Corporal Lee Duncan, and Duncan's insistence on his battalion checking out a bombed war dog kennel in Lorraine, France on September 15, 1918. The two, five-day-old puppies rescued by Duncan, were named after tiny French pup-

Duncan was enamored by the performance of the German war dogs, and their feats became the model for Rin Tin Tin's and Nanette's training. Duncan went so far as visiting the imprisoned German kennel master to learn more about the German Shepherd Dog breed. At the end of the war, Duncan and his pups traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., but, sadly, Nanette succumbed to distemper before reaching home. Knowing of Dun-

Duncan had named one of the puppies Junior. Although not the image of his father, Junior was a good dog and Duncan was persuaded to take a tour, in 1933, promoting him as the son of Rin Tin Tin. Junior was the first dog to take a commercial air flight and would go on to win the hearts of fans across America and abroad. At the onset of World War II, Rin Tin Tin III and his master became head trainers at Camp Hahn, California—the training camp for military dogs initiated by Duncan. Rin Tin Tin III was an enlisted soldier—with his number tattooed on his leg—and trained 5,000 dogs and handlers. After the war, dogs were re-trained, or untrained, so they may be returned to the families who had donated them for the war effort. Duncan concentrated on the development, progress and betterment of the German Shepherd breed as a whole. He was listed as breeder of Champion Tasso of Villa Marina, Register of Merit, the grandson of International Champion Grand Victor Odin von Buescher Schloss, FH (herding) and the 1936 SV (German) Champion. Odin was the grandsire of the dog registered as Rin Tin Tin II by Duncan. It was Rin Tin Tin II and his son Rin Tin Tin IV that appeared in the television series of the 50s.

Tuna (@TunaMeltsMyHeart)
Tune Melt, as he is affectionately known, warms the hearts of everyone who sees his unusual smile and shriveled neck. If an unconventional dog can bring us joy and encourage us to love with excellence, be accepting of others with differences (like him), and make people from all backgrounds and walks of life feel seen and known, then maybe we should consider putting those virtues into practice more and more as humans. It’s true that we can learn a lot from animals but we can especially learn a lot from one another by being examples of these virtues. It truly starts with us and it can start right now.

REAGAN POWELL: Vitality Counseling, Inc.
R
eagan Powell is a Licensed Professional Counselor and owner of Vitality Counseling, Inc. in Rincon. She founded Vitality Counseling in 2017 and now has a team of counselors with a variety of specialties. Originally from Houston, TX, Reagan moved to Alabama and attended high school there. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Alabama and her Master’s Degree in Counseling from Mississippi State University. Her first job was right here in Effingham County at Effingham County High School. She worked as a Professional School Counselor there for 14 years. While the position at Effingham High School was fulfilling, Reagan wanted to have more interaction with her clients and more opportunity for in-depth counseling sessions. Her experience at the high school did however, inspire her to open her own practice, Vitality Counseling, Inc. Reagan has built a strong practice with a diverse group of counselors who are able to provide a variety of services to their clients. One service that Reagan is especially excited about is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). ART is grounded in well-established psychotherapy techniques, and it uses relaxing eye movements to reprogram the way in which distressing images are stored in the brain so that they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions. Clients do not even have to talk about their traumas or difficult life experiences in order to achieve recovery. ART has been shown to provide benefits much more rapidly than most traditional therapies (in 1-5 sessions) and can be used to treat a variety of mental health issues, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, phobias, substance abuse, and a number of others. Currently, there are two therapists at Vitality Counseling, Inc. who are trained in ART, and there is another therapist who is trained in EMDR, which is another eye movement therapy. Both ART and EMDR offer similar results. Vitality Counseling, Inc. has a diverse staff of therapists who provide counseling services to Effingham and surrounding areas. There are three Licensed Professional Counselors on staff, along with one Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Each of them brings their own unique style, along with different areas of expertise into a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere. This is what makes Vitality Counseling, Inc. a great choice most counseling needs. Located in Rincon, Vitality Counseling, Inc. is just the place to start your counseling journey in a relaxed, friendly setting.

TAMMY LEGGETT & DONNA HORTON
P
eople often say “never go into business with your friends.” However, it can be one of the most exciting, fun, adventurous, challenging, supporting and satisfying things you can do if you have the right partner. Tammy Leggett and Donna Horton are friends first, business partners second and have been enjoying building Hortons General Store together and keeping it running like a well-oiled machine. Tammy is the face you see when you walk into the store and she manages the day-to-day operations for the store. She is very personable and is great at communicating with all of the customers and vendors. She also maintains the store by keeping the shelves stocked, creating gifts and baskets for the customers. She enjoys interacting with the customers and listening to their stories. Donna is more behind the scenes, she works full time in Savannah and balances her time between her job and the General Store. Hortons General Store opened May 18, 2020. Donna’s husband Van operated Hortons Deer Processing and opened up Horton’s Quality Meat in 2015. In 2016, Horton’s Quality Meat closed down to focus on wholesale and retail of Hortons’ Beef Jerky. Donna and Van would travel around on the weekends going to large events promoting the Horton Products. When COVID shut down large events in 2020, it was a hard blow since large events were where they promoted most of their products. This led to the idea of opening the General Store to help with their retail business and also to help out friends that were affected by COVID. Friends and fellow festival vendors across Georgia and South Carolina were contacted to see if they were interested in selling their products in the store. The response was overwhelming! Horton’s General Store is overflowing with local products from Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida. Horton’s fresh sausage is now available everyday in the store. They also carry local and small batch company items such as BBQ sauces, marinades, pickles, jams, jellies, dressings, soups, spices, coffee and more Gifts are a big part of the store with T-shirts, soaps, jewelry, candles and more. They create gift baskets upon request from items chosen by the customers. Tammy and Donna also created their own brand that perfectly describes their business, Southern Rooted. This is a lifestyle company “rooted” in faith, family and friendship. Donna is working on many t-shirt designs for Southern Rooted, and they have expanded into selling soaps, candles and coffee with more products to come. Horton’s is a women-owned small business focused on making their business successful and also helping out other businesses be successful as well. B’RENEWED WITH BONNIE J. SMITH
I
t can be frustrating when you have pain or medical issues and every doctor you go to can’t seem to find the solutions. They run tests and still come up blank. Bonnie has heard on multiple occasions from clients that they “wish they had come to her sooner.” Many people don’t think too much about massage therapy or holistic healing when an issue arises, and Bonnie J. Smith wants to change that perspective. She wants people to use massage therapy as a second or third option to receiving help. Often massage is the last resort or is thought of to be a luxury service, but in reality, it has a lot of physical and mental benefits. Massage therapy should be a necessity and not a luxury. Bonnie worked at the Westin spa for ten years before moving to a chiropractor office. When she worked for the chiropractor, she was fascinated by the clinical and medical side. She wanted to approach massage therapy as a clinical means of addressing physical issues. At B’Renewed, Bonnie offers a variety of services including body scrubs, hot stone, nutritional testing, and coaching. When her clients comes in with a physical issue they can’t seem to solve and leaves happy and pain-free, that is when Bonnie knows that what she is doing for her clients is working. Bonnie has been getting her message out to others in the surrounding areas so much that she has now opened a second location to accommodate more clientele. B’Renewed has been in business for only two years and she has already shown her customers success in being pain-free, and they share their experience with others in their lives. If you are looking for something different to try and you feel like you have tried everything, give Bonnie a call! She offers much more than just massage therapy and has had lots of success with relieving pain for clients who thought they had no other options. Give Bonnie a call today and visit her at one of her two B’Renewed locations!

DR. FRAN WITT:
President & CEO of Effingham Health System
D
r. Fran Witt is a woman who likes to acknowledge the people who work around her. Her “healthcare heroes,” as she calls them. This is especially so over the past year. But to listen to her speak, there is little doubt that she is one of those heroes as well. As President and CEO of Effingham Health System (EHS), Dr. Witt is leading her team to set new benchmarks for rural healthcare—while many other small hospitals across Georgia, and the country, are closing their doors. “We received the nationally prestigious MCG Health Doyle Award for protocols we developed to manage COVID-19 patients,” says Dr. Witt. “That is the level of innovation and professionalism our staff demonstrated in responding to the pandemic.” While managing the healthcare crisis, her hospital team also received the first place Patient Safety Award and the Circle of Excellence award from the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability. And, even as the COVID-19 crisis dramatically impacted the Effingham Care and Rehabilitation Center, of which Dr. Witt is also Administrator, her nursing home team achieved the Joint Commission’s “High Performing Organization” status. Ask any of Dr. Witt’s nearly 500 employees what her motto is, and they will say, “Be the change. Lead the change. See the change.” She continues to focus on the healthcare system’s long-term, transformational journey. In 2020, she introduced Effingham Cardiology, which assures access to cardiac care close to home. For many patients that require cardiology services, that means they can be treated locally and not transported elsewhere for care. She’s also proud that the Effingham Orthopaedics partnership now offers Pain Management services to reduce reliance on pain medication in the community. Evolving EHS into a healthcare leader means making decisions that will ultimately push the organization forward in its transformational journey. For Dr. Witt, one of the most significant decisions has been her recommendation that EHS purchase the daVinci robotic
surgery technology. Dr. Witt says, “At that time, no other Critical Access hospital in Georgia had invested in robotic surgery. But the financial projections made sense, and we are committed to implementing technology. Our board agreed, and we made the decision to invest sooner rather than later.” That focus on technology and the patient experience is behind a new three-year Digital Transformation, creating a singlesource Electronic Health Records ecosystem across the entire healthcare system. Dr. Witt is impacting rural healthcare at a state and national level as well. She sits on the American Hospital Association’s Rural Health Services Council and several Georgia health care boards. Locally she serves as executive vice-chairman for the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Like other women in business know, timing is not always perfect. Dr. Witt demonstrated her personal and professional resiliency as she found herself in the final stages of her doctoral program while simultaneously leading the pandemic response for the healthcare system and nursing home.
