Club Torque I have been pleased to see record

attendances at recent club and register activities. Involvement by members is important in our club.

At this stage of the year there seems to be motoring activities almost weekly that we can be involved in.

Many of our members are in for a very busy month with the significant motoring event for Adelaide being the V8 Supercars (Superloop Adelaide 500) and this is followed by the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. The National Jaguar Rally in Albury Wodonga is next on the agenda with the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic on 7th April. Our club is usually well represented at McLaren Vale and we have been allocated to Hardy’s Tintara Winery.

Club Torque Hello and welcome to another edition of Classic Marque.

This edition has been a little late off the presses but is packed full of great content for you to enjoy. On the bright side, you’ll have less of a wait for your next Classic Marque fix in April!

Tim White has been working very hard behind the scenes on upgrading the club’s expansive member database; over the coming months, a series of presentations will be given at General Meetings on how members can interact

JDCSA New Database A message to members from your Executive Committee The JDCSA has recently updated our database management, which will more securely manage membership, provide accurate data for log book management and will allow our office bearers and register secretaries to better communicate with members.

The new database is utilising a system called ‘TidyHQ’ which is designed for club membership databases and is used by many sporting and car clubs in Australia and overseas. It has excellent security features to ensure that everyone’s data is safe.

All the information from the old database has been transferred. Members are now invited to begin using the database to update your personal details and the details of your Jaguar/s. The previous database did not hold all the information on our vehicles and the new database allows us to do this. The new database will also enable members to purchase JDCSA regalia online and to also register for events like the Annual Dinner.

The database will be used by most register secretaries to arrange meetings, advise of upcoming events and general communication.

This is an exciting time for the club as we move positively forward and we encourage you to log in and have a look around the database.

To login and obtain your password; Go to www.jdcsa.com.au and if asked to login use Membership>Database (members only)>press “CLICK HERE” 1. This will take you to the database 2. Click LOGIN at top right of screen

Jaguar’s Mardi Gras Debut Sparkling move towards diversity in motoring Noelle Faulkner whichcar A surprising pop-up by the British marque set a new standard on how brands can include themselves in events outside the box.

“Holden, you’re a disgrace to Australia!” “Well, you have offended me and I drive a Holden....but it will be our last.” “How to alienate the majority of Australia in one go.

What about supporting families and tradies and celebrate them! [sic]”.

When Holden came out in support of Australian Marriage Equality and announced itself as the first automotive company to sponsor the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2017, these were just a sprinkling of the negative comments that flooded social media.

Sadly, despite an actual overwhelming positive response, most of the negative comments viciously perpetuated stereotypes that still exist in Australian car culture, sending a message that inclusivity is still a dirty word in greater motoring circles.

Actually, Holden was one of the first thenAustralian companies to come out in support of marriage equality, alongside QANTAS and ANZ, putting its money where its mouth is by sending out a number of rainbowwrapped Colorados and Astras filled with glitter and feathers down Oxford Street in the Mardi Gras parade.

Holden is still the only automotive ‘major’ partner for Sydney Mardi Gras, but this year, Jaguar also entered the ring in a cloud of power, glitter and disco tunes.

A great deal of companies have copped accusations of “rainbow washing” in recent years for tagging along for the Mardi Gras ride in attempt to snatch a piece of a pie that is estimated to soon be worth upwards of tens of millions (the same-sex marriage industry alone is said to be worth $50milion and climbing).

And, Jaguar Land Rover, a relatively new brand engaging in the LGBTQI+ space and 2019 principal partner of the Queer Screen’s 26th Mardi Gras Film Festival, showed the rest exactly how to do it right. How? By respecting the culture it was tapping into first.

Located in the heart of Taylor Square, the popup Jaguar Jag Queen Service Centre became a buzzy hub and safe space for the thousands of visitors and locals moving through Darlinghurst for Mardi Gras.

To start, the centre partnered with Sephora to offer makeup touch-ups (and glitter-ups) and full drag makeup looks. Next, on the eve of the parade, it hosted one of the hottest drag

Right: Cat WoMAN makes an appearance! battles of the week, the Jag Queen Catwalk Competition: a “Ru-Paul’s Drag Race” style dance and lip sync battle with a very serious prize of a trip to London Pride on the line.

Unlike a lot of that aforementioned ‘rainbow washing’, this was not a drag show that could risk being seen as a joke or a poor representation of the culture (an example; many brands use Brazilian dancers instead of drag queens in their Mardi Gras marketing).

Instead, it was a high-level competition that attracted some of the city’s best performers who themed their acts around the spirit of the Jaguar cat, helped by the hashtag #fitforaqueen.

We saw performers grab a mic and heartwarmingly wax lyrical on their love of cars, adoration for automotive performance and their own fond memories of the marque – from a queen who dressed herself as the leaping hood ornament, to another who shared a story of attending her brother’s wedding in an old Jag before she could come out as a queen.

The British company also used the opportunity to raise money for Twenty10, one of Australia’s most renown LGBTQI+ charities supporting at-risk young people and their families.

“Inclusion is integral to the way that we do business at Jaguar and we recently established the Jaguar Land Rover PRIDE LGBTQI global network,” said Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Australia. “We are excited to celebrate

creativity, equality and diversity with the incredible line-up of LGBTQI talent and films in this year’s festival, and to have some fun at our Jaguar Service Centre fit for a queen.”

Mardi Gras comes around but once a year, and yes it was a marketing tool, but what stuck with this activation was how showcased why the motoring industry needs to think more about inclusivity, so that those comments perpetuating stereotypes entrenched in misogyny, homophobia and antiquated attitudes are drowned out by a collective love of cars.

As a cis white woman, it’s hard to truly comprehend how the LGBTQI+ community has been treated in automotive, but I can certainly try. Leaving a lasting impression among those who are part of a culture that is rarely included in the automotive conversation en mass (and who would rarely attend a track day or car show) is not easy, but it can be done without it seeming self-serving or crass.

What happened here was finding that allinclusive place that marries car culture through art, emotion, entertainment and personal experience – and actually, if you think about it, isn’t that how you would describe a car show anyway?

Welcome: President Julian Lugg welcomed all to the meeting. Welcome to new members, David and Don – it is always good to welcome new members.

Previous Minutes: The minutes of the November and December General Meeting were accepted.

Business Arising from Previous Minutes: Tim provided an update and instructions for TidyHQ website. Reminder that you can order regalia online. Tim is willing to provide people with a demonstration tonight, but next meeting we will have a full presentation.

Welfare Report: Ian Pascoe has had a fall but is recovering, Gordon Brown is having chemo and is doing well, Rob Smith continues to struggle but is doing ok.

President (Julian): Seatbelt law changes have been amended and these have been distributed to members. Please check out the JDCSA website for full details.

Christmas Meeting – Julian sought feedback on the evening. Menu selection was good, overall it was enjoyed by everyone with the same format.

Any other feedback, please contact Julian or a member of the Executive Team.

McLaren Vale Classic – we will be at Tintara Winery (202 Main Road, McLaren Vale) with a number of other clubs.

National Rally – 29 March in Albury Wodonga.

There are a number of people going from Adelaide.

All British Day – This Sunday at Echunga. Thank you to people who have volunteered to be marshals.

General Meeting Minutes

Vice President (Phil): SA Jag Day will be on Sunday 20th October. We need a coordinator for the day. Please be assured there will be plenty of people who will support you and assist you. It is not an onerous task. Venue is still to be finalised.

Phil spoke of the criteria for a venue. If you have an idea of a venue that might be suitable please speak with them and then contact Phil.

Secretary (Alan): All British Day this Sunday with potentially 50-60 cars from our club in attendance. Thank you to those who have volunteered to be marshals. Alan will be there from 8am to set up the gazebos.

We appear to be missing some of the water weights for use with the gazebos. Dane advised he knows where they are.

Treasurer (Heather): Everything is tracking well.

Membership (Daphne): Everything is going well and she is getting the hang of TidyHQ. She received the new membership tonight for Don. Log Books (Dave): 416 active club members, with 269 members with log books and 402 log books.

Editor (Dane): The February edition was published today. Check your emails and the club website. Please send items in preparation for the next edition.

ACJC (Tim): An open letter has been prepared

by Tim as Chairman to all affiliated clubs seeking input from all members as to the direction the Council should take into the future.

The Council is still trying to make contact with JLRA to start building a renewed relationship

year. Presentation day is 24th February for MSCA. Librarian (Tom): Plenty of books and DVDs available. Also lots of freebie books – come and have a look.

Registers Compact (David): Christmas Picnic at Oaklands Park and we gave a donation to the Childhood Cancer Foundation instead of Kris Kringle. We had a barbecue at Hindmarsh Island last Sunday.

Our next meeting is in April at Mt Osmond Golf Course.

XJ, Mk10, & 420G (Bob C): Busy Christmas period with dinner and breakfast events, as well as a day trip to the Barossa in January. Next meeting is Wednesday at Shannons’.

Multivalve (Peter): Australia Day barbecue at Bill and Margaret’s. If you are planning on attending the October event please ensure you book very soon.

E-Type/F-Type/Grand Tourer (Tom): Allan spoke of their family day in January with good attendance with lots of fun by all. Next meeting is Thursday fortnight.

Held at the home of Bill and Margaret on Hindmarsh Island with 25 people in attendance for a barbecue.

Everyone enjoyed themselves with lots of chatter and catching up. Great to see some members we have not seen for a long time and to welcome members from other registers too.

Best wishes were extended to Ian Pascoe and Sue Prior following falls for both of them.

Items discussed: Jaguar Nationals 2019 – these are coming up and it is pleasing to see some Compact Register members attending in various cars. Have a great time and travel safe to Albury.

Jaguar Nationals 2020 – this event will be in Perth and David has begun investigations about transport and options for getting the cars there. These were explained to members and they were asked to consider joining a contingent. We may be able to get a group/bulk discount.

All British Day – if you have not registered for this event, please do come up to Echunga and have a look McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic – members were encouraged to register for this upcoming event.

National Rally: The Luggs and Ossie and Michael Petrucco, from our Register, plan to attend the 50th National Rally at Albury/Wodonga from 29 March to 1 April.

Mannum Coffee Run: On 24 Feb there will be a coffee run to Mannum. Our Club will attempt to have more than 15 Jags present which is the number of Holden Monaros expected.

Register Business: Robin reported on planning for the Border Run in October this year: The Ides recently visited Mount Gambier and made contact with key people at the Barn, Yallum Park at Penola, and at the Lady Nelson Visitor and Discovery Centre and checked out a few venues and local attractions.

At this stage, Mon 21, Tues 22 and Wed 23 would be the nights to be booked for accommodation on the basis that most people would arrive in Mt Gambier on Monday and depart Thursday morning.

We could offer the option of staying an extra night on Thurs 24th.

As a general principle we will travel for not much more than about 30 minutes to points of interest.

Organised activities will not fill the days and there will be time available for people to do their own thing.

The next step will be for Robin to contact Roy Armfield from the Victorian Register to make sure that the dates shown above work for the Vics. Once

that has happened, he will confirm dates for accommodation and for the visit to Yallum Park.

Future Meetings: On 5 March the Billinghursts have organised for us to visit the Clipper Ship, City of Adelaide. Note that RSVPs will be needed.

In May there will be a run to, and BYO everything lunch, at John and Maria’s place. Details to be confirmed.

AOB: Sue reported that Doug is now home after a spell in hospital.

Car Talk: There was brief car talk where Rod advised of Mark 8 parts for sale.

These were; radiator grille, water pump, impellers, oil cap, horns, and over-riders.

Ossie has a problem with a door lock and several suggestions were made.

2. JDCSA: Bob Kretschmer.

1. Database Administrator Tim White presented a detailed & informative introduction to the new ‘TidyHQ’ Club Administration System & Data Base. It seems complicated to start with but there will be significant benefits later for many Club Officers once the programme is implemented.

In order to help members there will be progressive information sessions at future General Meetings plus specific email messages direct to members.

2. Jag Day will be on Sunday 20th October at the Civic Park.

3. There were 65 vehicles displayed including four by Malcolm Adamson at the recent All British Day. Bruce Fletcher also displayed four cars parked with the JCCC area.

4. The Club is to support the ”Buy a Bale” Qld. Floods relief.

5. The General Meeting ‘Supper’ for the SS Register is the 4th June.

3. TECHNICAL & PARTS: 1. Restoration Projects: SS Airline (Bruce) - The engine is still in Melbourne & is currently being balanced, followed by new pistons. The steering wheel is being rebuilt by a specialist in Warragul Vic. Jaguar 1 ½ L Sedan (Ross Rasmus) - Ross is doing all the timber restoration & cabin roof lining himself & described some of the problems being encountered, especially with matching the veneers using modern procedures & materials. The doors will be next, then the windows. Des Brown reminded members that there was a demonstration of veneering at a recent General Meeting.

Coffee and Cars at Mannum On Sunday the 24th February, Mannum invited all car enthusiasts to join them for Coffee and Cars down by the river, next to the ferry. Our own Roland Donders, who lives at Mannum, asked us to join him as he had heard that quite a few members of a certain Holden Car Club were coming to the event. With that in mind we passed the word and we are pleased to say that we outnumbered them two to one. We had 22 Jaguars present and approximately 50 people come along to what was a very lovely day out.

Thanks again to all those who made the effort. It was much appreciated.
