Club Torque The President’s Rap There was great participation of club members in the recent All British Day with about 59 club entrants. Our display created interest from a number of people who are potential club members. The vehicle with the most interest was clearly the XJ13 - it was great to see it on display. Thanks to our coordinator Alan Bartram and the team of club marshals.

Preparation for the National Rally is now in full swing with the involvement of registers helping to coordinate activities. If any members

have not yet registered I urge you to do so as soon as possible.

I hope most club members are able to come to the National Rally Display Day at The National Motor Museum in Birdwood on Sunday 15th April 8.30am – 3pm (vehicles to enter before 10am). This event is free but we would like people to register (at no cost) to help with our organisation.

There will be a large number of XKs on display as well as

many other Jaguar & Daimler models.

I hope most of our club members are able to become involved in some way to make this an exciting and interesting National Rally with a big thank you to all those club members who are volunteering to assist.

content from our membership to fill Classic Marque!

Welcome to another edition of Classic Marque - as always, I hope it finds you in good health.

With Mad March upon us, now is the perfect time to remind members to regularly contribute to the magazine, with photographs, reports, event summaries, or anything else that takes your fancy!

There are a number of exciting events coming up over the next few months (not least of which, the 2018 Jaguar National Rally), so it would be great to receive even more

With my begging over, lets dive into this edition; March means it’s motor show season, and the biggest of them all is Geneva. Jaguar Land Rover have gone all out this year, unveiling the production version of the IPACE electric SUV, as well as a very special one-off commissioned XJ6 which graces our cover - you can read more about that on page seven!

We’ve also got pictures from a recent Multivalve Register

gathering, and a member shares their experience with the new “Club Registration” scheme on page 14. At the forthcoming state election, make sure you remember who was responsible for introducing this excellent new scheme (bouquets for you, Minister Mulligan!).

Membership Cards As part of the Executive’s ongoing review of streamlining administration and reducing the time taken by volunteers, we have made a decision to not produce yearly membership cards for all members.

The reasons for the decision were based on the following: -

The limited use of the card; The verbal evidence taken across the membership indicated only around 50 members (at the most) used the card to obtain discounts from various suppliers; The Executive committee has never formally endorsed a supplier in the last 13 years; We are aware that some members do obtain discounts from suppliers on an ad-hoc basis (eg Sprint on South Road and Solver);

The time take by the membership secretary to produce 500 cards every year; Whilst a mass membership card mailing won’t occur we have arranged for ad-hoc cards to be issued to those members who specifically request one to obtain discounts through their own supplier arrangements. They will not have a specific year printed on them;

There is a financial saving in not producing these cards which again is part of an ongoing diligent review of costs;

-

Verification of membership for logbooks can be done electronically.

We can review the decision on membership cards if significant suppliers offering discounts are engaged in the future.

Please feel free to talk to a committee member should you want more information.

Heavy Metal Remixed XJ6 Jaguar creates unique “Greatest Hits” XJ for Iron Maiden drummer Jaguar Newsroom On March 6, at the Geneva Motor Show, Jaguar Classic was proud to present Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain’s custombuilt ‘Greatest Hits’ Jaguar XJ6, kicking-off the XJ model’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2018.

The bespoke commission is a collaboration between Nicko, the expert engineers and craftsmen at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Coventry and Jaguar Design Studio Director Wayne Burgess. The project involved more than 3,500 man hours of work, with more than 4,000 parts refinished, replaced or redesigned. Unlike any 1984 XJ6 before, it incorporates substantial modifications to the exterior, interior, drivetrain and suspension, resulting in Nicko’s dream XJ. Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic director, said, “Creating this ‘Greatest Hits’ XJ, and the whole process of bringing someone’s automotive dream to life, has been extraordinarily rewarding for the Jaguar Classic team. It’s been a pleasure to work with Nicko and we’re looking forward to hearing the reaction to this project.”

Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, said, “This is my ultimate XJ – my third, and lovingly, named ‘Johnny 3’. It has been a true labour of love between Jaguar Classic and myself. I’m so excited by its completion and especially to be showing it at Geneva – it really is a Greatest Hits edition and to me it defines what the Jaguar XJ is all about. It’s a credit to the craftsmanship of the Jaguar Classic team. We couldn’t have timed it better, this being the 50th anniversary of XJ – my favourite of all Jaguar vehicles.”

Further nods to the owner’s art include machined aluminium rotary controls on the dashboard – inspired by the control knobs of the guitar amplifiers created by Nicko’s great friend Jim Marshall, and drum kit inspired pedals finished in chrome and black. The custom three-spoke sports steering wheel features Nicko’s unique mascot – the ‘Eddie Growler’, first seen on his specially commissioned 2013 Jaguar XKR -S. Bespoke soft down lighting illuminates the revised dashboard, in which a state-of-theart Alpine touch screen controls the 1100W sound system, powering speakers from Nicko’s preferred Jaguar audio installation, the 2012MY Jaguar XF. Incorporating a number of reconditioned parts from McBrain’s original XJ6, the 4.2litre in-line six-cylinder engine features three 2-inch SU carburettors from the Etype – Nicko’s favourite set up. Machined quad-exhaust tail pipes finish-off a specially -designed exhaust system.

Inside, classic Jaguar style meets modern day convenience. The leather seats are hand trimmed in Pimento Red with black piping and embossed head rests, while a black hand-crafted carpet and Alcantara headlining finishes off the trim. The dashboard features Dark Grey stained Sycamore veneers – the preferred material for Nicko’s favourite snare drums.

Preserved components from Nicko’s first XJ6, which spent many years on the grounds of the home of Iron Maiden bass guitarist Steve Harris following Nicko’s move to America, are present elsewhere in the build too: from the iconic Jaguar leaper hood mascot, which first attracted Nicko to buy the car, to the original ignition keys from 1984.

Jaguar SVO Charged Up I-PACE SVR could be first in series of performance EVs from Jaguar Land Rover John Mahoney Motoring.com.au The Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) skunk-works of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed it will develop highperformance versions of the British carmaker’s forthcoming range of electric vehicles (EVs).

Headlined by the Jaguar I-PACE SUV revealed at this week’s Geneva motor show, JLR’s upcoming EV range could also include the next-generation Jaguar XJ limousine and F-TYPE sports car, and the new Land Rover Defender.

At Geneva, SVO boss John Edwards confirmed his company was relishing the opportunity to redefine what a performance car is with a range of SVOhoned EVs. Speaking to a group of assembled Australian journalists, Edwards said creating a high-performance version of a battery-powered vehicle wouldn’t be easy.

“It’s definitely a different challenge, but I actually look at it as an opportunity and our engineers love having a problem,” he said.

“Give them a problem and that’s when they’re at their very best, trying to work out how to respond to the challenge”.

Instead of simply adding more power, Edwards said it could be time to completely redefine the performance car.

“The rules of performance vehicles in a traditional [internal combustion-powered] market are very established and we react to those established rules.

“With electric vehicles, the rules aren’t established at all, so I think it gives us different opportunities,” he said.

He said there were “interesting opportunities” when it came to improving a pure-electric vehicle’s performance, luxury and capability.

When asked what SVO’s first EV will be, Edwards pointed towards last year’s Frankfurt motor show announcement that the modified I-PACE eTROPHY racer would begin competing in a one-make race series alongside Formula E. Although he refused to explicitly confirm an I-PACE SVR was in the works, when asked whether it could be inspired by the racer Edwards smiled and replied “possibly”.

He then added: “Of course I would like to see it, but I have no shortage of crazy ideas I’d like to happen”.

Sharing its 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the I-PACE eTROPHY is closely related to the road car but has twin

motors that produce 325kW (versus the street-legal car’s 294kW).

Combined with a weight saving of around 150kg over the road car, the racer can hit 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds – 0.6sec quicker than the standard vehicle.

Another engineer told motoring.com.au the biggest hurdle facing SVO in extracting more power from Jaguar’s EV powertrain is the limitation imposed by the inverter, which converts direct current stored in the battery to alternating current to power the motor.

Even with the addition of larger motors, the engineer said performance will not necessarily improve unless you can efficiently extract enough power from the batteries for the motors to generate their maximum power outputs.

Internally, JLR currently thinks it has reached the mechanical and electrical limit for the I-PACE, but work has begun on exploring new electrical alternatives, said the engineer we spoke to.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Welcome to an exciting new year especially with the National Rally coming up.

The President’s Board has been updated, thank you Malcolm Adamson. It should be cooler for All British Day on Sunday; if anyone has a spare pass please let Di know as soon as possible.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT: President’s Picnic to be held in September for all club members in an informal manner and this will incorporate a celebration of XJ Series 1 cars who are celebrating their 50 th anniversary. Venue to be finalised, BYO everything, family picnic, display of XJ Series 1 cars, expecting 10am to 2pm or there about, very informal. Need to find an alternative venue, possibly a winery. Any suggestions to Phil please. Balhannah or Mylor ovals.

SECRETARY: All British Day is this Sunday; appreciative of those who have volunteered to be marshals on the day; the club has 59 cars registered and there will be three marquees for the club to utilise and the weather will be just perfect. Gates open at 9am.

Federation: Notice from the SA Government with over 2500 cars that are on historic registration that are not members of a registered car club. As from February details of your club membership will be required when registering your vehicle at SA Service Centres.

Bay to Birdwood is currently organised by a committee and this is going to be transferred to the National Motor Museum to manage.

TREASURER: It is expected that we will break even for the 2017 financial year due to better than expected renewals.

ACJC: Next meeting Sunday 18th February which will be mainly reports on the National Rally. Victoria are planning for the 2019 rally, there is discussion about a new trophy which will be launched in 2019, there are some awards for the 2018 rally. There are five new committee members this year. Thank you to Tim for your work on this committee.

NATIONAL RALLY: Di spoke of this in her speech, as reported below. Regalia is now available for the National Rally, check out the website for details.

EVENT COORDINATION: Jim noted all the upcoming events and recommended people check the website for the most up to date details.

NEW BUSINESS – Dreaming Foundation - JDCSA have been asked by Rotary for assistance with some cars on display on the Adelaide Cup Day – please see Di for details if you are able to assist.

Conditional Registration – members can have any type of vehicle over 30 years old and be a member of our club. It was noted that log books cannot be transferred so registration in joint names may be useful.

GUEST SPEAKER was Di Adamson who spoke about the upcoming National Rally in April. Registrations are going well with lots of activities. All people need to register for the National Display Day at Birdwood Museum for catering purposes (94 cars so far, expecting 200 cars) even though this event is free. (If the Display Day is the only event attended then the registration fee is not applicable). It appears that lots of people are staying on for the Victor Harbor section of the rally which is really pleasing and it appears that a number of people are staying on the McLaren Vale Classic and Vintage festival.

Some questions about the Tailem Bend track experience – questions about the requirement of special licence requirements to enable people to drive around the track.

Di is continuing to follow this up with the management of the facility but it is thought that no additional licence is needed.

Collingrove Hill Climb – clarification on this event was requested.

Rally Registration Desk – assistance is requested for this on the Thursday from 12 noon to the evening. If you are able to assist please speak to Di. Regalia has been organised and there is a wide range of items available. We are hoping to pre-sell everything.

All items available in male and female versions. Size chart is on the website.

Tim spoke about the website TidyHQ which is being used for the shop and database. Tim also gave a brief update on the database but this will be explained fully in the coming months.

The February Register meeting was held in conjunction with a barbeque and for some, a game of tennis at Ossie and Rayeena’s. At 7.30pm Robin opened the meeting with thanks to the Petruccos for hosting us at their place.

Club Business: - All British Day 11th Feb – About 60 vehicles have been entered by JDCSA members.

- The club has plans later in 2018 to celebrate 50 years since the launch of the Series 1, XJ. - The Bay to Birdwood run will be managed by the National Motor Museum in future.

- The NMM will have a Bugatti Veyron on display for about 5 years - The most important item of Club business was that final arrangements were provided for the 2018 National Rally which will be in SA from the 12th to the 20th of April. Four days will be at Tanunda and four days at Victor Harbor.

The rally website is at jaguarnationalrally2018.com. Approximately 150 people have booked for the Formal Rally dinner on Sunday 15 April.

- Julian outlined events planned as part of the National rally, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of the XK 120. A dinner is planned on Saturday 14 April 2018 to celebrate the anniversary and there will be a display on Sunday 15 April for XKs at the National Motor Museum at Birdwood.

Register Minutes

- The Register has identified more than 30 XKs and will encourage the owners of those cars to join in the celebrations. The Register will assist in promoting the involvement of XKs and their owners in events especially for them such as: Viewing of XKs at the Carl Lindner museum, An XK category at Collingrove hill-climb, XK dinner on Saturday 14 April, display of XKs at the NMM at Birdwood on Sunday 15 April, photo-shoot at Hindmarsh Island on Tuesday April 17th.

- Thursday 19th there will be a display of Jags including XKs at Warland Reserve at Victor for XK participants, - Presentation of certificates to XK participants at the farewell dinner on the 19th.

Register Business: - For 2018 the border Run is incorporated in the National Rally and the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the release of the XK 120 outlined above.

- 24 March, Dirt to Diesel at Keith. Onslow provided detailed information.

- Balaklava run to the Goodales’ will be on Sunday 20th May. Details will be circulated by e-mail.

- There was general discussion about more frequent events for the register. Nothing was resolved for the months of March and April because of peoples’ prior commitments.

Car Talk: - Ossie reported on his recent experience in the Prima Tour.

- Onslow told us about problems after installing new pistons in his XK 150 and how other Club members helped him resolve the problem.

- Peter Holland’s 120 has plenty of fresh factory-red paint. Re-assembly will follow.

- John Elmgreen’s book on XK 140s is near completion.

Robin closed the meeting at 8.50pm with thanks to the Petruccos for hosting the meeting and for the delicious desserts.

3.BORDER RUN 2019: It will be the turn of SA to organise the TriState Event but the only expression of interest in attending were Malcolm Adamson, Bob Kretschmer & Antony Veale.

The matter of organising such a Run under those circumstances will be a problem.

Several suggestions for a venue were suggested – eg Lismore, Queanbeyan, & Griffith.

Much more work is required. Bob K will check Albury Wodonga (extra distance for Qld. Malcolm & Bob may drive to potential places for a ‘reccy” A single site for 50 vehicles is a preference and this is the biggest problem. The date will probably be September. Malcolm intends to drive a modern car.

4. TECHNICAL & PARTS: 1. Ross Rasmus advised that he has decided to remove the engine from his 1 ½ L restoration project. There was discussion on the relative merit of disconnecting the gearbox, with preference of removing the engine & gearbox as one unit.

2. Bruce has delivered his SS Airline vehicle to Marque Restorations. He needs the correct Part No. of the post war 1 1/2L generator.

3. Antony asked the purpose of the ‘holes’ in the floor panels of his MkV. They are intended as mounting places for seat belts.

4. Jack seeks a 7/16” Cycle Thread Tap or alternatively a nut. Bob K has a BSCY tap & dye set.

5. Jack advised that following repeated problems of his MkV brakes sticking when using Girling seals the problem has been solved by changing to Australian made seals.

Samples were tabled.

6. Ross Rasmus listed several items he required for the tool tray of his 1 1/2L but was pleased to be rewarded by rummaging through Bruce’s spares stock, finding what he wanted & then by-passing the metal detector on the out door.

Bay to Birdwood Committee – Working Paper 1. ALL BRITISH DAY: The following members participated - Bruce Fletcher (multiple vehicles), Malcolm Adamson (multiple vehicles), Ross Rasmus, Jack Richardson & Bob Kretschmer.

2. BORDER RUN 2018, 2nd – 5th November: The Victorians will organize the Run. The dates will remain and the venue will be advised when that is decided. The short list includes Swan Hill & Bendigo.

4. GENERAL BUSINESS: 1. Log Books: When more than one driver is required on any one day, the Regulations are still not clear & members can use their own discretion. It is considered ‘safer’ if the second driver simply under-signs the first initial.

2. Bay to Birdwood: It is proposed that the National Motor Museum assume control of the event. There is an excellent 7 page report available on the matter.

Entrants are requested for a Jaguar Display on Sunday 15 April at Birdwood. Entries are free with the proviso that vehicles remain on site from before 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. The prominent Rally display banner does not include the MkV 70 year anniversary. There is a Post-Rally event at McLaren Vale on Sunday 22nd in conjunction with the MV Vintage celebration.

6. WELFARE: Past Register member Peter Mott is struggling with health issues but is determined to continue to be involved with his vehicles.

Revised Club Registration— My Experience James Mann With the rules now changed for Club Registration (formerly “Historic Registration”), my 1988 Jaguar XJ40 became eligible for historic registration on 1 January this year. It was built in September 1988, but the rules now state that any vehicle manufactured on or after January 1 is eligible.

I went on the web and downloaded the MR1 form and filled it out. I referred to Classic Marque [Ed. Points for promotion of CM in your article - cheque’s in the mail…], but not all of the club registration inspectors have stamps for the MR334 form, so I was pointed in Evan’s direction, and he very kindly agreed to take time out of his day to inspect the Jag. The next day I took it down to Evan and he filled out the MR334.

I then went to Transport SA the next day and they told me that the MR1 was not necessary (that is a change of ownership form), and instead gave me another form to fill out. They said they would have to transfer the registration and it would take 5 minutes. In my stupidity, I decided that I would fill out the form later and come back once the registration had expired.

About a week later I went back to Transport SA and they informed me that they could not register the car on Club Registration because the registration date listed was 1989; they could not change it, and told me that an “identity check” would be required. I went on the Ezyreg website and registered the car on a temporary permit for a day ($46.50) took it to Regency Park

for an inspection. Following an identify inspection, they filled out an MR29 form - no appointment is needed for an identity inspection.

I then returned the paperwork to Transport SA, and $92 later, the Jag is now registered for a year - which I think is a bargain!

I then contacted Dave Burton (Logbook Secretary) who very kindly supplied me with a log book, and now I am all ready to go. I would like to thank Ron Palmer, Evan Spartalis and Dave Burton for helping me with the process.

January Multivalve Lunch On January 16th, the Multivalve Register enjoyed a lunch run to the Aldgate Pump Hotel. Sixteen cars met at the Marion Hotel on Marion Road for a 10:30am departure. The weather was lovely - a typical Adelaide sunny day with blue skies. We headed to the cafe at the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor & Information Centre for coffee and cake via Clarendon, Yaroona and McLaren Flat, arriving at 11:15 for an hour's chit-chat and a look around the Centre (very interesting and more than just a cafe).

We left the Centre at 12:15 heading through Willunga and up Willunga Hill where they were erecting the stand for the finish line of one section of the Tour Down Under. We carried on through Meadows, Echunga and Mylor, enjoying some beautiful scenery along some very winding roads before arriving at the Aldgate Pump Hotel for lunch at 1:15pm. An enjoyable meal and a relaxing 2.5 hours followed with some lively conversation between members.

It was nice to have Club Patron Peter Holland and his wife Ros along with us for the journey. All members thoroughly enjoyed the route and look forward to the next event.
