Jaguar E-Type Restomod Gets The Go To Match The Show Restored '70s British classic gets 6.1-liter V12 and many more bespoke upgrades John Tallodi CarBuzz Any Jaguar E-Type aficionado worth their salt knows that the earlier 3.8 and 4.2-liter straight-six models have long enjoyed the majority of attention from collectors and enthusiasts over the years compared to the Series 3 V12 variants. These later cars were an altogether softer offering, their smooth power delivery was undeniable, but most came fitted with power-sapping automatic transmissions which made them perform more like a long-legged GT rather than a responsive sports car.

One customer decided that he wanted the best of both worlds and commissioned British specialists EType UK to create him a custom Series 3 like no other.

The original carb-fed 5.3-litre V12 fitted to the Series 3 reputedly produced around 250 hp, which is not all that impressive nowadays, and a fair number of these horses would undoubtedly have escaped in the 44 years since it left the production line. To rectify matters, the team added their bespoke downdraft fuel-injection system and upgraded the ECU and throttle bodies too. A capacity increase to 6.1-liters helped contribute to the dyno-tested 284 hp at the wheels while the custom-made velocity stacks and 12-branch exhaust system added the necessary aural accompaniment.

The brakes, steering rack and suspension were also comprehensively upgraded. This V12 E-Type is fitted with an aluminum 5-speed manual transmission with gearing to take advantage of the upgraded powerplant.

The interior has not been forgotten either and aside from the beautifully f inished leather, Alcantara headlining and improved air-conditioning system, this restomod also has a number of

modern touches. Examples include LED ambient lighting, engine start button, and a surround sound audio system with integrated Bluetooth functionality.

THE BOTTOM LINE It is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensively restored and upgraded Series 3s around and yet it tastefully adds modern conveniences and performance while retaining the stunning looks of the original car.

This may be a bespoke one-off build incorporating one man’s vision but we can’t think of one thing we would do differently if we were ever fortunate enough to commission our own E-Type Restomod. Pricing for this build was not announced. But if you have to ask, then probably couldn't afford one.

Jaguar wants German taxi drivers to choose I-PACE Kicks off initiative by giving 10 of its pure-electric SUVs to Munich's biggest taxi company John Mahoney Motoring.com.au Jaguar has announced it plans to go head-to-head with MercedesBenz to win the hearts and minds of Germany’s taxi drivers with a new scheme that has seen 10 Jaguar I-PACE vehicles delivered to Munich’s biggest taxi operator.

While Germany’s taxi market is thought to exceed 50,000 licensed cabs, the British car-maker will have its work cut-out as Mercedes dominates with more than 60 per cent of all taxi sales.

Working in Jaguar’s favour is the burgeoning demand for pureelectric vehicles in Germany, where a number of cities are considering banning diesel vehicles from their centres.

Beating its European opposition to market, the Jaguar I-PACE and Tesla Model S and Model X are expected to make in-roads among drivers ready and willing to make the switch.

Biggest barrier to breaking Mercedes’ German taxi dominance is costs. The typical Mercedes EClass costs half the price of the pure-electric Jaguar SUV, although some of those costs will be offset by subsidies and considerably lower running costs.

Tempting taxi drivers to invest in pure-electric cabs to reduce localised air pollution further, the city of Munich has announced that it will contribute to rides in order to lower operating costs even further,

paying 20 cents (31 cents Australian) per kilometre travelled.

“We want to invite people in Munich to drive electric, but also drive Jaguar,” Jaguar Land Rover’s CEO Ralf Speth said.

“One of the reasons we wanted to be here was the mixed traffic – you’ve got the city traffic, on the other hand you’ve got the autobahn to the airport.”

As well as improving air quality, the Jaguar I-PACE is significantly quicker than the current dieselpowered steeds enjoyed by German cabbies. Thanks to its twin electric motors, the I-PACE generates 294kW/696Nm — enough to haul the pure-electric SUV to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds.

The biggest barrier to Jaguar’s success will not be the 480km range provided by the I-PACE’s powerful 90kWh battery, but the 10 hours it takes to ‘fast-charge’ its battery to 80 per cent – significant down time for a hard-working taxi driver.

Luckily, unlike Australia, Germany is planning to roll out mightier-still 100kW super-fast chargers that reduce that time to around 40 minutes.

Jaguar’s honeymoon with the German taxi industry is expected to be short-lived. Mercedes-Benz will launch its I-PACE-rivalling EQ C crossover in 2019.

Jaguar Drivers Club of SA General Meeting 3rd July 2018 Opening: President Julian Lugg, welcomed everyone and opened the meeting at 7.37pm.

Visitors and New Members: Julian welcomed visitor, Patricia who is a friend of the Charmans.

Julian also welcomed Arcadia, who has not been able to attend a few meetings recently due to serious injury, and Barry who is ‘back and doing well’.

General Meeting Minutes The President’s picnic will be at the Serafino Winery on Sunday 14 October.

Cats and Cans will be run on that day and will benefit the Noarlunga Salvos this year.

Form letters for use at your local supermarket will be available in August.

There were about 10 Jags present at a recent “Horsepower Cruise” gathering at Marion Shopping Centre (1400 cars!).

Secretary’s Report: Nomination forms for the AGM are available.

Previous Minutes: Minutes of the general meeting held on Tuesday 5 June 2018 had been circulated and were accepted as an accurate record of that meeting.

Treasurer: Tim White reported on the recent highly successful National Rally which made a modest surplus mainly because rally registrations of 153 exceeded the budgeted figure of 80. Julian thanked Tim for his behind-the-scenes work for the National Rally and for his management of the Club’s financial affairs.

In response to a question from the floor about whether the number of registrations was the highest ever achieved at a National Rally, Tim undertook to check records and provide a response via Classic Marque.

Welfare: Margaret Piper-Browne and Peter Goodale both have had recent surgery and, on behalf of all of us, Julian wished them well in their recovery.

Membership Officer: Daphne reported two new membership applications for the month of June.

President’s Report: Julian reminded us about a number of events: Bookings for the annual dinner at the Glenelg Golf Club on 28 July are filling fast but there are some seats still available. $65 per person.

President’s picnic will be on Sunday 14 October.

Bay to Birdwood entries are open.

Club AGM will be on Tuesday 4 September.

Treasurer Tim White is retiring and all executive positions will be declared vacant.

Please consider nominating. Forms are available.

The September GM will also take place on 4 September.

The 50th National Rally will run from 29 March to 1 April 2019 in Albury/Wodonga with post rally tour in the Yarrawonga/ Echuca area. Peter Buck reported on suggested accommodation based on a recent visit to the area. JCC Vic will have details.

Editor: Dane Wilden advised that the soon to be available Classic Marque would be a double issue for the months of June and July and can be seen at its best on line. Dane thanked members for the thousands of photos that he has received for the National Rally.

Secretary, Alan Bartram advised that Dane had recently won a promotion at the National Motor Museum which will see him managing ‘front of house activities’. Members congratulated Dane with acclamation.

Conditional Registration: Dave Burton reported that ‘work continues’ on processing renewals. There are about 100 renewals outstanding.

ACJC (Australian Council of Jaguar Clubs): Our representative Tim White gave a comprehensive report on matters currently under consideration by the ACJC. The ACJC was established in 1984 to promote camaraderie amongst Jaguar owners, promote the marque and to act as a focus for relations with

JRLA. A discussion paper, that asks what it is that clubs want ACJC to do for them, has been circulated. ACJC has put a fair bit of effort into rallies and concours in the past but has not addressed bigger picture issues such as ‘what should ACJC do’, ‘should it continue to exist’, and ‘should it open its membership to all Jag clubs in Australia?’.

With the recent change of GM of JRLA it would be appropriate to invite the new GM to visit individual clubs.

Events Coordination: Jim Komaromi reminded members that comprehensive event information is available in the Events Calendar provided on the Club website.

Register Reports: Register representatives provided brief reports on current register activities.

Regalia: Ron Palmer displayed examples of Club apparel and advised that he can take orders to suit individual sizes.

MSCA (Marque Sports Car Association): Runs sprints at Mallala and needs flag wavers. Please see Barry Kitts if you can help.

Library: Tom Brindle has older books tonight, magazines, DVDs and donated magazines which are available free for members.

New Business: Tony Human provided comprehensive information for two events planned by the Multivalve Register: On Sunday 19 August there will be a run to Aldinga Aerodrome and Huntfield Airfield where vintage and historic aircraft will be on display. The day will conclude with lunch at the Beach Hotel, Seaford. Let Tony know if you plan to attend.

On the long weekend in October the Register will travel to Horsham and visit the Reg Ansett museum and a private motor museum.

Multivalve Register

REGISTER BUSINESS Tony Human has organised a run on Sunday 19th August to Aldinga and Huntfield Aerodromes (with talks by suitably qualified pilots/engineers and a look around some aircraft) followed by lunch at the Beach Hotel in Seaford.

Monarto Zoo, Tuesday 28th August – numbers for this event are at capacity and there is a wait list. Judy will confirm full details nearer the time. The plan is to meet at the entrance to the zoo at 9:15am. The entrance fee per person is $21.50 and lunch $19.50 – participants are asked to have the money ready in an envelope for Judy on arrival.

Tony Human has also organised a run to Victoria over the long weekend 29th September to 1st October (or 2nd October for those staying the extra night and travelling home on the Tuesday). Full details of the run will be re-sent but members are advised to book the accommodation as soon as possible.

Peter asked for a volunteer to run the Multivalve Register Meeting on the 25th September as he and Heather will be away. A venue for this meeting is also needed. Peter can provide the necessary help to arrange this before he leaves.

XJ Register visit to Bob Charman On Sunday the 8th of July, 27 members of our Register took a lovely drive up through the Adelaide Hills to visit Finch Restorations at Mt Barker. We were met by Peter Roberts and his wife, who had the coffee and morning tea waiting for us.

Peter is the Director of Finch Restorations, which was established in 1965. One of Peter’s credits is a 1914 Hispano Suiza Type 26 Sports Roadster which won its class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California; not bad for a local lad, eh?

Peter is not only into motor cars. He will restore almost anything. Motor bikes, petrol pumps, and he even had an old rusted child’s pedal car ready to undergo restoration.

After spending just over an hour of looking at incredible cars from all over Australia, with some even being exported overseas, we made our way down to the Aldgate Pump Hotel for lunch. We were supposed to go to another Hotel, but there were unconfirmed reports that it had burnt to the ground overnight (either that or someone had forgot to book us in...).

Either way, we can firmly recommend the Aldgate Hotel to other Registers and if you are looking for a great morning out, contact Peter at Finch Restoration; it’s well worth the trip!
