Club Torque The President’s Rap The last month has seen a significant increase in the number of motoring activities. Thank you to the many members who participate in the wide range of events that help to promote the Jaguar Marque.

Congratulations to Phil and the organising team on a great SA Jag Day with about 130 cars participating (they even organised perfect weather after last year’s washout at Torrens Parade Ground).

Congratulations also to the Compact register on the celebration of their 40th anniversary.

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in the XK Mk 7,8,9 register Border Run with the Victorians in

Ballarat. It was well attended with about 20 cars in total. Moira and I drove the XK120 to Ballarat and the sight of two XK120s, one black and one white, travelling in convoy turned a few heads in several small townships along the way. The group agreed to support the Jaguar National Rally in April next year as the Border run for 2018.

The Jaguar National Rally 2018 is gaining momentum with a large number of accommodation bookings already.

The organising team is finalising details of the rally so keep an eye on the website for the latest details.

It was very sad news to hear of the death of well-known Jaguar enthusiast Carl

Lindner. He was a great supporter of our club and we were well represented at the recent memorial service for Carl held at the Seppeltsfield Winery.

The December general meeting will be a relaxed social evening organised by the EType, F-Type, Grand Tourer Register, so please come along and join in.

Club Torque Hello everyone!

I hope this edition finds you well.

I’m afraid I must firstly apologise for the slightly tardy publication of this issue—my trusty desktop decided to have a complete electronic coronary, and so it’s currently in intensive care with our local computer doctor.

As a result, I lost a good portion of the magazine, and had to rewrite and reformat at rather short notice!

Still, I got it done, and boy, is this a great issue!

We’ve got more gorgeous photos of members’ cars than you can poke one of Alan Baker’s well-polished EType dipsticks at! Thanks to all who

Editor’s Column submitted images from the multitude of events that were on in October—from Register runs (page 18 and 19), to community fairs (page 17), and our annual Jag Day— certainly worthy of a fourpage photo-collage special!

Valley, I insist you take an afternoon to have a look. The collection, much like the man himself, is incredibly impressive and larger-than-life. Carl’s support of the club and his local community will be deeply missed.

Carl Lindner - Vale Carl Lindner, a gracious, humble and much respected gentleman passed away on Sunday October 8, leaving behind his loving family, including wife Peg. Carl was many things to many people – a champion Aussie Rules footballer, builder, developer, winery owner of major importance, a massive promoter of the Barossa – and a deep lover of Jaguar cars. He was also a great supporter of our club, always making his Jaguars available for displays and parades.

Carl had battled cancer for a number of years, and lived way past what was predicted – but he was a determined man! He was 73 when he died on Sunday.

He will be deeply missed, and we send his family and friends our very deepest sympathies on their loss.

XJ sedan to remain Jaguar flagship Potential SUV model will not usurp XJ’s position in Jaguar range

Scott Collie CarAdvice Jaguar has dismissed suggestions the XJ sedan could be usurped by an SUV at the pinnacle of the range.

Design boss, Ian Callum, told Autocar the XJ would remain the brand flagship, even if a ‘JPace’ SUV were to be added to the range.

“An SUV was discussed but it’s not the mainstay of the brand,” Callum told Autocar. “There’s more sophistication for a flagship due to its origins and that’s Land Rover.”

Although he rejected the idea of an SUV flagship, Callum admitted the basic sedan shape needed to be spruced up to remain relevant in the current climate. He also credited the polarising design of the current XJ for its longevity.

“The coupe profile is something I obsessed over,” he said.

“Some people don’t agree with it. Everything else is three-box; people simplify and categorise things. [If you do that], you lose the opportunity to define it in your own way. The XJ covers that well.”

Sedans might be out of favour, but hatchback-style cars like the Audi A7, Tesla Model S and Kia Stinger are growing in popularity, especially in North America. Callum noted their success in his interview, and said such vehicles – along with rise of electrification – is forcing the reinvention of the sedan.

The J-Pace SUV, reportedly arriving in 2019, is expected to ride on the same platform as the Range Rover. Where the big, wafty Range Rover is a softriding luxury car, the big Jaguar will likely focus on delivering a sportier drive.

Jaguar reinvents E-Type for the 21st Century - 270km range, 0-100km/h in 5.5s.

“We future history.” That’s the tagline used

by JLR’s classic division, and an idea perfectly expressed by the Jaguar E-Type Zero. To put it another way, you’re looking at an E-Type EV. We know. Is nothing sacred?

Widely regarded as the most beautiful car there’s ever been, surely internal combustion is as core to the E-Type’s entire reason for being as its famously seductive shape?

On the other hand, there’s method in this particular madness. Firstly, Jaguar’s fastgrowing classic division has managed to retrofit a 220kW electric powertrain into the E -Type’s chassis without getting busy with an angle-grinder – the chassis is completely untouched, suspension, brakes and all.

Secondly, because the 4.2-litre straight-six did service in virtually every Jaguar made from 1949 to 1992, this electric powertrain could theoretically be fitted to every one of those cars. Not only that, it can be unplugged again, and the original ICE hardware reinstalled. Just ponder the possibilities for a moment…

“It’s not unthinkable that a city like London could ban internal combustion vehicles at some point in the future,” JLR Classic director Tim Hannig says. “The E-Type’s the most tightly packaged Jaguar, so we can convert any classic Jaguar into an EV. Not only that, but we know there’s an audience out there that is attracted to the style of a classic car, but doesn’t want the inconvenience that can sometimes come with it. We also understand it’s not for everyone, and the guys who crave originality might have issues with it. But we think this is a way of future-proofing classic car ownership.

We’re showing it to some of our clients, and we’ll see what the market makes of the concept.”

TopGear.com had a preview, and sitting in an E-Type as it whirrs off in near-silence is a genuinely spooky experience. The liquid cooled battery pack fits as if to the manor born right where the engine usually sits, with the electric motor and reduction gear just behind it (where the gearbox is sited in the original). A new propshaft sends power to the same differential and final drive. The inverters and control units sit snugly in the boot.

Jaguar claims a range of 270km (168 miles) on a full charge, and a zero to 62mph time of 5.5 seconds. Replenishing the battery takes six to seven hours, depending on the power source, but there’s no fast-charging option. Given the utility profile of most classic cars, that’s probably not an issue.

E-Type Zero was developed with an undisclosed technical partner, and uses a different battery pack to that in the upcoming i-Pace (demand outstripped supply as the new EV ramps up, for now at least). Nor is the E-Type Zero prohibitively heavy: in fact, it’s approximately 80kg lighter than the original. “Weight wasn’t the issue,” Hannig says, “because the 4.2-litre is a heavy engine. Securing a decent range was the challenge.”

There’s a new instrument panel and centre console inside, using a TFT screen and a central display that shows power output and usage, range, and music options (hard drive, not vinyl turntable, but you can’t everything). The future has never looked so reassuringly familiar.

General Meeting Minutes Secretary’s Report: Alan Bartram provided information for the Callington Agricultural Show at which a small number of Club members will be present.

New Business: A Club jacket of a style that is no longer available was auctioned for $25. Sue Harrison also had posters to give away.

Formal Closure: After thanking the XK 7,8,9 register for supper, Julian closed the formal part of the meeting at 8.02pm.

Membership Officer: NTR. Opening: President, Julian Lugg, welcomed everyone and opened the meeting at 7.30pm.

Visitors and New Members: Julian welcomed guest speaker Peter Roberts from Finch Restorations and new member Rob Darry who has an XJ6 Series 3.

A number of Club members participated in the recent Classic Bay to Birdwood run.

Publicity is out now for the All British Day and for an All European Day. Vice President’s Report: Phil Prior gave a comprehensive report on the arrangements for Jag Day, including Cats and Cans, on Sunday 15 October at the Brighton Secondary School oval. The SA Daimler group has been invited to join us on the day.

Editor: Dane Wilden said that the October CM would be available this evening. Dane asked members to keep sending photos and reports of events for publication in CM. Julian backed up Dane and added his encouragement to members to provide CM articles.

ACJC: NTR. National Rally: The website is now fully functioning and many accommodation bookings have been made. Don’t delay!

Events Coordination: Jim Komaromi reminded members that comprehensive information, for many events, is available in the Events Calendar provided on the Club website.

Guest Speaker: Julian introduced Peter Roberts from Finch Restorations at Mount Barker. Peter provided interesting insights into how this well known restoration business now applies modern technology and project management to the restoration of historic motor vehicles. Key points included: - Computer modelling of surfaces; - Case studies of the building and development of the SS 120 illustrated the presentation; - Panel work, painting and woodwork is done in house; - Small jobs are undertaken; - Registers are welcome to organise a visit; - Contact via website.

At 8.33pm Julian thanked Peter for his excellent presentation, and closed the meeting.

Di Adamson is coordinating entries for the Motor Sport Festival. Those interested in having vehicles on display in Victoria Park should contact Di. Drivers get free entry.

The club’s annual “Jag Day” on Sunday 15th October saw over 130 vehicles assemble at Brighton High School for a public display. The day was a great success, with Peter Leaf-Milham’s red E-Type (pictured right) awarded the People’s Choice award—the late Carl Lindner’s gorgeous XKSS finished a close second (pictured far right).

Prospect Spring Fair A number of vehicles from the club attended the Prospect Spring Fair on Saturday 28th October. Blessed with beautiful weather, members proudly displayed their cars to an excited crowd of the general public.

Multi-valve Naracoorte Arcadia and Jim Komaromi The program for the run was based on staying at the William Macintosh Motor Lodge at Naracoorte and then doing day trips wineries etc. near Penola, Kingston SE and Robe.

The run consisted of 11 cars and 23 people. Some members of the group had difficulty with their pride and joy (Jaguars) and had to show up in alternative vehicles.

In preparation for the run I decided to give the car a polish using the CODE sample polish that had been given to members. It was very easy to do and I still have about half a container left.

The polished body had a very good shine and a silky feel when you ran your fingers along the body, Arcadia and I were both very pleased with the results.

Come the day and as soon as I drove the car out of the garage it started to drizzle and it very well continued until we reached Keith where we stopped for lunch; there went our hopes of a nice shiny car to show off to the locals.

As we all know the aim of these runs is to have an enjoyable time eating, driving, browsing small little local stores that you find nowhere else and sometimes with surprising items at reasonable prices plus enjoying the sights.

To that end we enjoyed our Saturday lunch at Henry & Rose at Keith with a chance to purchase from their gift shop.

We also had a platter lunch planned for Sunday at Di Giorgio’s winery. Arcadia had call from them on Friday morning confirming numbers for Sunday. So all was set, so we thought.

At 3:35pm on Saturday just as we were booking into the lodge at Naracoorte I received a call from Di Giorgio’s cancelling our booking as they had sold out all their platters and they would not be able to restock in time for Sunday.

This goes under the phrase “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. She did give me some alternatives to try but slotting in 23 people at short notice is not easy and they were unsuccessful. The staff at the Macintosh were very helpful and gave me some suggestions and also offered to make picnic hampers if we needed them.

After several failures I contacted the Chardonnay Lodge who were very willing to accommodate 23 people with platters for 2 at the same price that we had quoted by Di Giorgio. We were all very impressed with the platters provided and the service of the staff especially at such short notice and they already had another large booking for lunch.

A very big thanks for the Chardonnay Lodge and a huge “brickbat” for Di Giorgi!

Run—7th-10th October On Tuesday we had planned lunch at Billy Mac’s Bistro, Naracoorte to which the remainder of the group consisting of 8 people attended and had an enjoyable lunch before heading for home.

We had happy hour at the end of each day in one of the member’s rooms after which we headed off to dinner. On Saturday and Monday it was at the Highlander Restaurant at the William Macintosh Motor Lodge and Sunday at Kincraig Hotel.

Enjoyable evenings were had by all.

As part of the weekend we visited the following places: • Coonalpyn, art silos • The Purple Paddock in Keith, craft store • Petticoat Lane and main street in Penola, craft stores and early settlers accommodation • Cape Jaffa Lighthouse and Pioneer Museum in • Kingston SE. Guided tours had been arranged and a few intrepid souls ascended the 129 steps to the top of the lighthouse.

• Sea life centre and Obelisk in Robe.

• Minijumbuk store and The Sheep’s Back Museum in Naracoorte. The Sheep Back Museum was surprising for its content and details of early shearer’s lives.

• Wineries visited were the Cape Jaffe wines where we had a platter lunch plus tastings and the Raidis Estate were tastings were carried out and wines purchased.

In general a good time was had by all and the weather, except for the rain on Saturday, was sunny and mild.

Duty Register is required to arrive at 7pm and ensure the room is ready for 7.30pm
