VALE Winter is on us and don’t we know it. This cold weather doesn’t really encourage you to go out for a drive but the rain is good for our gardens.

It was very sad to hear of the passing of a valued member, John Stanley. John was with his wife Wendy on an overseas holiday when he suddenly passed.

John was a past President and ACJC Representative for the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria. John and Wendy joined JDCSA in May 2009 after moving to Adelaide and had been active members within our Multivalve Register.

Our thoughts are with Wendy and John’s family at this difficult time.

I am looking forward to our Annual Dinner and Presentation Night this Saturday evening, 30th July at Glenelg Gold Club. I would like to thank Geoff and Marg Thomas, Peter and Roz Holland and Bob and Daphne Charman for all the work they have put in to prepare for this

Julian Lugg and his committee have been busily working preparing for our Annual SA Jag Day. This year we are holding the event at Elder Park on the lawns beside the side of the Torrens. We will again be combing this event with our Cats and Cans collection of non perishable food for the Salvation Army.

CATS & CANS is here again!

It may sound a bit boring to be embarking on our 4th CATS and CANS charity food drive.

However if you are tempted to feel that way you may ask how your family might cope with our current severe winter conditions without adequate food.

I doubt that many of our members have had to go to bed hungry recently, or even worse had to put our children to bed hungry. So please get involved in this initiative and give generously.

We all have the opportunity to make a difference by gathering up non-perishable food items over the next couple of months ready to bring along to SA JAG DAY on Sunday 16th October at Elder Park. On the opposite page is a list of some of the most needed food items supplied by the Salvation Army to help in this endevour.

There are letters available for you to present to your local super market who have always been willing in past years to supply food vouchers for you to spend in store. If you have not tried this in the past please consider doing it this year.

notice the lack of local content in this edition of Classic Marque. In my opinion local content and Jaguar News are the most important content if this magazine is to continue to be of interest to our members.

It is some time now since I have had a story from a member for our “Members Pride” section. It would take a member about 15 minutes to put together a short story and a few photos of your car/s. You may want to address questions such as the following: 1. How did you get interested in Jaguar cars 2. What was your first Jaguar experience and first car?

3. How long have you been a club member?

4. What do you appreciate most about club activities 5. Do you have a humorous Jaguar experience to relate?

6. If you did by another Jaguar what would you like to buy?

Sunday October 16, 2016 YES it is on again and we need you involved. Last year we gathered together almost 3000 items of food and other basic items for distribution by the Salvation Army.

HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH SA JAG DAY AT ELDER PARK ON THE BANKS OF THE TORRENS Enjoy the day out with other members and their cars.

Collect a boot full of canned food for distribution by the Salvation Army.

All canned food and donations collected on the day will once again go to the Salvation Army to be distributed to those in need.

Graeme Moore Took the X300 out for first time since Peterborough. Hadn’t realised just how good it is to drive.

Phil Prior Just bought a 650 B.M.W. Brilliant.

Mark Walker-Roberts Have known Evan Spartalis for about 30 years. Has a Ser.1 and loves it. Bought it about 2 years ago when he off-loaded one of his children. Is about to change it from Auto to Manual. The car is Old English White and previously belonged to Alan Davies.

Communications with the Mildura Vehicle Restorers Club have become complicated & unfortunately it looks like we will not meet with them.

3. ACJC; The Brisbane National Rally will not include a Concour & will not be over Easter. Dates to be advised.

The Committee is seeking ideas for the SA Rally 4.The proposed visit to the Humphry Pump has been postponed, now possibly April 2017.

JLR is holding talks with Ford and BMW about building a battery factory for future electric vehicles.

Although in its early stages, it’s believed that Jaguar is keen to get the project started and build its first all-electric car, according to a report published by The Times.

All three companies have plans for their own electric vehicles, and with Tesla currently dominating the electric vehicle market, each is keen to grab its share of the growing demand.

JLR currently doesn’t have an electric vehicle in either its Jaguar or Land Rover ranges, so it doesn’t build its own EV batteries. Ford’s batteries for the Focus Electric are produced in collaboration with a subsidiary of LG, while BMW sources its batteries from Samsung. A joint battery factory between the brands would benefit all three manufacturers.

The plans fit the EV timescale for all three manufacturers.

Jaguar is believed to already be developing its first allelectric car, based on theF-Pace, although it remains tightlipped on the model ahead of its unveiling.

Ford has also courted speculation that it will produce an electric model after it blocked Tesla’s attempt to use the ‘Model E’ moniker. The Model E name would be a nod to the Model T, as well as signifying the car’s electric powertrain.

An all-electric BMW i8 is also in the pipeline but will not come to fruition before the current model’s imminent mid-life refresh. BMW andJaguar’s flirtation with the Formula E race series also signposts the brands’ electric vehicle ambitions.

When contacted for comment, spokesmen from both Jaguar Land Rover and Ford were unable to give any more information on the plans, which they described as "speculation". A BMW spokesman was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

3.15pm Returning via Bowhill and the scenic route through Young Husband back to Mannum.

6.30pm pre dinner drinks and dinner at the motel.

10.00am visit the Bob Holland’s vintage speedway car display.

11.30am we go to the Mannum wharf to board the Jester for a 2 hour cruise and light lunch.

2.00pm we depart for home via Monarto and the SE freeway

“One of Every Model” 3-6 December 2016

All Jaguar XK owners are invited to an event to be held in Canberra. The goal of the weekend is “One of Every Model” whereby we are trying to have at least one example of each XK model on display.

Jaguar Land Rover to buy new BMW V8 engines to replace the ageing AJ-V8?

It’s reported that Jaguar Land Rover are to replace the ageing V8 in cars like the Jaguar FType and Range Rover with a new V8 from BMW. The V8 engine Jaguar and Land Rover use in their high performance versions – the AJ-V8 – has been around in one form or another since the 1980s, and brilliant though it still is it is rapidly becoming something of a dinosaur.

The problem for JLR is that although the AJ-V8 is knocking on, there really is no real alternative in-house that will produce the sort of power and torque the V8 can.

Yes, JLR are busy extending the range of Ingenium engines to include 3.0 litre in-line sixes (as well as 1.5 litre three-

cylinder engines), but the in-line six is expected to deliver something around 500bhp at best.

That may be enough, for now, to accommodate the needs of the Range Rover and Jaguar base V8 variants, but it’s not enough for SVR performance models or even SV luxury models. So JLR need a solution.

That solution, according to industry veteran Georg Kacher, writing for Automobile Mag, is a deal with BMW to buy their new V8, a V8 that will downsize to 4.0 litres but offer power of at least 600bhp in the most potent guise and deliver emissions and economy (at least officially) vastly superior to JLR’s current Ford V8.

It may be back to the future for JLR using BMW V8s, but if it makes the continuation of the V8 viable for both JLR and BMW, it seems a very pragmatic solution.

THE BOTTOM LINE This Hot-Rod Jaguar is Part GM, Part Audi, and All Awesome. With a 575-horse V8 and a gated manual transmission, it's got everything you never thought you wanted in a Jag. Take a pretty but mostly unloved long-wheelbase Jag sedan, rip out the drivetrain, and shove a Ligenfelter-prepped LS3 making 488 horsepower to the wheels through a GATED manual T56 transmission, make the interior look Superfly, and add a few subtle-yet-awesome touches to the body, and man, we do have a winner. Too bad about the rain, but the Jag makes it feel like a sunny day!

70th Birthday Bash Given that a number of our members were turning 70 this year it was considered a good idea (excuse) to do do some sort of road trip.

All kinds of ambitious options were suggested until finally sanity prevailed and we settled for four days in the Riverland.

The year of 46ers included, Evan Spartalis, Peter Holland, Andrew Costi, Philip Prior, Ian Pringle and Leslie Clarke along with respective partners. Unfortunately Ian and Wendy Pringle and John and Leslie Clarke had to pull out due to health issues. Noel and Jo Orford also planned to join in on bash as the younger ones who could watch over the oldies. Again due to ill health they were unable to join us. So then there were eight!

We planned to meet for coffee at Virginia Nurseries. This stop quickly turned into a “BIG” breakfast encouraged by Evan Spartalis.

Bannrock Station was the next stop with a light lunch in mind. As many know a beautiful place to pause and enjoy the environment of the wetlands. It was then to Renmark Golf Resort where we spent three nights.

The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the Loch Luna Eco Cruise out of Kingston on Murray.

The cruise is in a small flat bottomed barge with a toilet on board catering for a maximum of ten people (the barge that is not the toilet).

The weather on the day was magnificent and Captain Carl took us for three hours through the back waters of the Loch Luna Nature Reserve. Carl’s knowledge of the Murray and the birdlife along with stories of dubious origins kept us enthralled. A cup of coffee and fresh baked Choc Chip biscuits were appreciated.

The remainder of the weekend was relaxing and most enjoyable with magnificent weather (a welcome relief) a birthday dinner on Saturday night to which we invited local JDCSA members Alan and Fleur Carthew.

We will not be waiting for our 80th birthdays to do this again somewhere, sometime.

Jaguar’s next-generation XJ limo to be different from other large premium sedans JAGUAR is in the throes of developing a newgeneration version of its XJ limo, according to the leaping cat brand’s design director, Ian Callum, despite the stiff competition and low volumes in the niche premium upper-large sedan segment.

The existing X351-series XJ went on sale in Australia in mid -2010 and has a design that brought the nameplate into the 21st century and away from the traditional XJ look that it has carried since the original model launched in the late-1960s.

Global sales of some high-end passenger models such as the XJ and its direct rivals including the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class have declined in recent years thanks to buyers downsizing or moving across to SUVs. Volumes of the aforementioned models in Australia have dropped from a combined total of more than 1000 units in 2000, down to 640 units in 2005 and 543 last year.

The XJ was given a mid-life refresh late in 2015 and went on to sell 47 units for the year, well behind the segmentleading Mercedes-Benz S-Class (331).

Mr Callum, who oversaw the design of the current XJ, confirmed that Jaguar was developing the next-generation model and acknowledged the challenges in creating a fresh look while remaining faithful to the company’s current design language.

“We are evolving the next generation of XJ today, at the moment,” he told GoAuto at the Australian launch of the FPace SUV last week.

“And I do want it to be different. And we are looking at different ideas, but I still want people to recognise where it came from. It’s a hard one. It is easier to fix something that is broken, I will admit that. As long as people come with you.

That is the difficult one.”

When asked if the XJ was a difficult model to justify given the low volumes, Mr Callum said it was an important model for Jaguar as it helps build the strength of the brand.

“At its peak it was selling 22,000 units a year or so. I think it’s about 15 (thousand) or so now.

But yeah, we can still make a business case out of it. But it’s about brand building. And also you have got to wonder what the car should be and I won’t go into that because we will get into a big debate… but you need an XJ definitely. You need it for the brand.”

Mr Callum said the brand was committed to building a new XJ as a sedan, but added that he and his design team will ensure that it has a point of difference from other models in the premium upper-large sedan segment.

“I think the question is what should it be. And it is not a truck. People say ‘why don’t you just do another SUV, it would sell?’ Sure it would but it is not right for the brand. We will do another XJ. We have just got to make sure we do something that is a Jaguar and not just a copy lookalike of F -segment (large) cars. That’s what I try and avoid. I think the balance we have got with the car at the moment is quite good, I think we just need to take it to another level.”

While the XE and XF sedans and the just-launched F-Pace SUV are all based on the same aluminium architecture, Mr Callum said basing the next-gen XJ on that platform could prove difficult.

“You can only take one platform so far. We have got to work through that one. It is tricky. It will be a mixture of a few things.”

The existing XJ is priced from $201,900 plus on-road costs for the range-opening short-wheelbase Premium Luxury, before topping out with the 5.0-litre V8-powered SWB XJ R and the LWB Autobiography both from $300,275.

Timing for the next-generation XJ is unclear, although given that the current one launched in 2010, it is likely to arrive in 2018 or 2019.
