Attending Mass as a non-Catholic There are two general parts of the Mass — Liturgy of the Word — the hearing of the Word of God with preaching on that Word, and Liturgy of the Eucharist or Communion. All the parts of the Mass and some general instructions are contained in this program. Some specific questions that sometimes arise for those not of the Catholic tradition are as follows: Holy Water, Sign of the Cross, genuflecting, etc. — When Catholics enter a chapel or church, they dip their hands in the Holy Water font and make the sign of the cross on their bodies. This is a sign of baptism and of a willingness to continue to live up to the promises made at baptism. Catholics genuflect (go down on one knee) in front of the tabernacle. This is a sign of reverence and awe for the presence of the consecrated hosts inside the tabernacle. Catholics believe that Jesus is truly present in the consecrated host. Catholics bow before the altar as a sign of respect for the mystery of what takes place at the altar during Mass. As a non-Catholic you are not required to participate in any of these symbolic actions, although you may do so if you wish. Sitting and Standing at Mass — Generally Catholics sit to hear the Word of God and the preaching by the priest, and stand to pray. There are directions in the program which tell you whether to sit or stand. You may choose to do that, or to just remain sitting.

About the Eta Epsilon Chapter Beta Theta Pi Fraternity was founded on August 8, 1839 at Miami University of Ohio. “Beta,” as it is nicknamed, got its humble beginnings at John Carroll University on October 1, 2007 when a team of four Betas from the Administrative Office descended upon the campus looking for the best Gentlemen, Leaders, and Scholars they could find. A few short months later, 23 men were initiated as Founding Fathers, left to build a legacy, and a fraternity, that would be built upon the ideals of Beta Theta Pi. Today, the John Carroll Chapter, the Eta Epsilon of Beta Theta Pi, has 28 collegiate members, 9 new members, and 21 alumni members. These “Men of Principle” represent some of the best men Carroll has to offer. They are majoring in business, education, and the sciences, and the chapter holds a cumulative GPA of 3.25, higher than any other fraternity on campus. They are active in their communities, dedicating their time, money, and talents to worthy causes like the American Red Cross, Parma Adult Activities Center, American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and the Milestones Autism Organization. They are leaders in student organizations, campus ministry, and residence life, and take part in numerous intramural activities. Beta at JCU has certainly made its mark on campus and within the General Fraternity. In 2008 the chapter was named the JCU Greek Organization of the Year, and in 2009, the group took home its first Greek Week Championship. Eta Epsilon has won awards on both a regional and international level from the General Fraternity in areas including leadership development, academics, member education, campus involvement, and risk management. Several brothers have been recognized on an individual level with some of JCU’s biggest honors, including two recipients of the Beaudry Award, two recipients of the Outstanding Student Leader Award, one Millor Orator, and four consecutive Homecoming Kings. After three years on campus, Beta at JCU was awarded its charter by a unanimous vote of the delegates to the 171st General Convention in Washington, D.C. on August 6, 2010. Three months later, on November 6, 2010, Eta Epsilon was officially installed by the General Fraternity’s Board of Trustees as a chapter of this Great and Good Fraternity.

About the Milestones Autism Organization Today’s collection will be for Eta Epsilon’s philanthropy, the Milestones Autism Organization, which provides the tools for a better life for individuals with autism and their families as well as the professionals that support them. The Cleveland-based 501(c)(3) organization was founded in 2003. Milestones is the premier autism resource in the Northeast Ohio region for information about a person’s social, emotional, educational, recreational, therapeutic, vocational, and housing needs from birth through adulthood. Milestones annually serves 1,000 parents and professionals and receives over one million hits to the Milestones website. Hands-on workshops help parents and professionals learn techniques to assist them everyday in their homes and in their classrooms. Professional Development Credit is available for all Milestones workshops in education; speech, occupational, behavioral, and recreational therapy; developmental disability, social work, psychology, and counseling.

“I have come to deeply appreciate the spirituality and commitment of the Beta community at John Carroll. They participate in liturgy together, and they strengthen each other and set an example of how to support one another through difficult times. Individually and collectively, the Betas are a highly respected and competent group of young men. I feel certain that the leadership demonstrated by the Betas has had a profound effect on our community, and is a continuing source of excellent mentoring for new Beta members.” - Gail Roussey Coordinator of Liturgy, Campus Ministry

As a Jesuit Catholic university, John Carroll inspires individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.
