Connecting with Alumni, Families, & Friends of Beta The Newsletter of the John Carroll University Colony of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity
Colony Raises Over $1000 for Autism Research The official philanthropy of the John Carroll Colony of ΒθΠ is the Center for Autism at the Cleveland Clinic‟s Children‟s Hospital. This facility is nationally known as a leader in researching and treating Autism. This year, to raise money for its philanthropy, ΒθΠ hosted its second annual, university wide talent show: Carroll‟s Got Talent. On Friday, October 2 nd, twelve different acts showed off their musical, dance or comedic skills to both the students and community members in attendance. Through ticket sales and donations, this function brought in nearly $1,100.00. This year however, instead of simply giving the money to the Clinic, Philanthropy Chair Jamie Ott, hopes to involve the fraternity membership in some type of service project that can utilize the raised funds. One option currently being discussed with Travis Haycook, one of the directors at the Center for Autism, is to use the money to purchase gifts for the children, which would then be hand delivered by the colony. Haycook, along with Boler School of Business faculty member Dr. Welki and John Carroll staff member Mary Darling acted as guest judges for the talent show. They awarded first place to the members of iDance, a campus based hip-hop dance crew. Second place went to a trio of musicians: Taylor Nagy, Michelle Nigro and Justin Southward. Third place went to guitarist and vocalist, sophomore, Chelsea Gilbert.

Serving in Style One of the missions of Beta Theta Pi is “Commitment to Community.” Betas are charged to not only serve their fraternity, but their university and local communities as well. In light of this, each semester the members of the Colony perform at least twenty hours of service to their communities. Throughout early Fall semester the John Carroll Betas helped the Church of the Gesu handle the logistics of their service project, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and on two different occasions did landscaping work at the nearby Orange Senior Center. For this latter work the The Chagrin Valley Times highlighted the fraternity in a photo article dated October 8th. More recently members have participated in a campus wide Greek service day – an event called Competition for a Cause. A team of Betas won this event, which was made up of numerous mini athletic competitions including tug of war, an obstacle course and a Frisbee game called 2010 executive board with four of our fantastic KanJam. advisors at the Keystone Regional Conference. A Beta team also won top cheering squad award for their efforts in cheering on the Gamma Phi Beta‟s at the sorority‟s annual fundraiser – Powder-Puff Football. The recently initiated Delta Class will get right into living the Beta Spirit as they begin to plan the service project which will also function as a Spring 2010 Informal Recruitment Event this month.
