A Word From Our President Andrew Lane ‘12 The Eta Epsilon chapter of Beta Theta Pi has put its chapter motto of “Leadership Moving Forward” to practice during the Fall Semester.

Not only have our members stepped up to the plate to lead within our chapter, but our members have also answered the call to leadership in other areas within the Carroll community.

It is reassuring to see how much work can be accomplished by men who dedicate themselves to being Gentlemen, Leaders, and Scholars each and every day. Eta Epsilon’s Installation Weekend can serve as a prime example of how our chapter’s members have been able to work together to create lasting memories and partnerships through leadership.

Behind each one of these events came numerous hours of planning, facilitating, practice, and hard work. A huge thank you goes out to all of the brothers involved in preparing these events!

Throughout the Carroll community, many of our brothers have gained personal recognition through their leadership and campus involvement this semester.

Congratulations to Brother Trenton Oczypok for being elected vice president of the student body and Brother Stephen Fedyk for being elected as a senator of the junior class.

It is very rare for the Board itself to preside over an Installation Ceremony. This was only possible because this was also the weekend of the Board’s Cleveland Area Alumni Appreciation Dinner.

Having this occur was an extreme honor and another bit of history special to our chapter.

The Installation Banquet followed the Mass.

General Fraternity President Dr. Thomas Purinton, Kansas State ‘63, hosted this event, held in conjunction with the Board of Trustees’ Cleveland Area Alumni Appreciation Dinner, at Canterbury Golf Club.

Following the ceremony, the brothers’ families and many members of the John Carroll community, including the membership of other Greek organizations on campus, joined together in a special Installation Mass at St. Francis Chapel.

Of the more than 200 attendees, alumni from other chapters and active members of the Lambda Kappa-Beta Chapter from Case Western Reserve joined with the JCU community in this celebratory dinner.

University Board Member Rev. Lorn Snow, SJ, and University Chaplain Rev. Bernie McAniff, SJ, presided over the service. Rev. Ed Janoch, a Beta from Bowling Green State University was the homilist.

Fr. Janoch was visiting from St. Barnabas Parish.

The dinner not only commemorated Eta Epsilon’s Installation, but was also a forum for the General Secretary’s “State of the Fraternity” address and a celebration of the strength of Beta’s Men of Principle Initiative. This was a great opportunity for JCU parents and Friends of Beta to become more familiar with Beta’s mission and vision.

Men of Principle Scholarships Awarded Through funding provided by the Men of Principle Scholarship Grant Program, Eta Epsilon was able to hand out two, $250, scholarships to the “most accomplished and well-rounded” non-Greek males on campus.

In a ceremony held on September 20th, Scholarship Chair William Worms ’12 recognized each of the twenty-one applicants’ achievements.

“I am very pleased we had so many worthy men apply for this scholarship,” Worms said, “because each of them portrayed the qualities of a gentlemen, leader, and scholar on campus. Some were just inducted into the new Zeta pledge class, some are prospects for future recruitment periods, and some were just a pleasure to get the

chance to meet.”

Of these men, senior Dan Fitzmaurice and first-year student Anthony Lytle were presented the 2010 awards.

The awards are given to individuals who are the quintessential gentleman, leaders and scholars. The recipients of this honor strive to achieve academic excellence and work to better both their campus and community.

Fitzmaurice does this by his participation in JCU’s Labre Project (a ministry to Cleveland homeless), the Free Clinic’s Syringe Exchange Program and through dedication to Hunger Awareness Week. He is also the co-founder of World AIDS Awareness Week.

Lytle, through his involvement with Habitat for Humanity and participation in a mission trip to the Dominican Republic also demonstrates the qualities of a Man of Principle. Lytle was also a People to People Sports Ambassador and the recipient of the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award.

The Future With Our New Philanthropy Eta Epsilon aligned itself with a new philanthropy as of Fall 2010: Milestones Autism Organization. Milestones, based in Beachwood, was selected as our new philanthropy for its work with local children and its desire to provide our fraternity membership with hands-on service opportunities.

Through classes, conferences and support groups Milestones works to inform, educate and train the families and professionals who must interact with children with Autism. Milestones’ goal is to provide the necessary tools so that all those influenced by Autism can have a better life.

(Continued) several Beta only events, such as bowling, a “Get to Know Beta” reception, and a service event with our new philanthropy, Milestones Autism Organization. For informal recruitment week, our weekly wing night was turned into a recruitment dinner and other events like Capture the Flag and pick-up football took place, in addition to another service based event.

New Member Education The new members brought in by these events were inducted on September 28th. For the following eight weeks the pledges learned the history and principles of Beta under the guidance of Member Educator John Jackson ’13 and his assistant Greg Sloat ’12.

The big brothers that were paired with the pledges on October 10th were also instrumental in demonstrating over this period what it really means to wear the letters of Beta Theta Pi. In reflecting over this past recruitment season, Jackson commented “that the eight weeks of pledge class went very well. All nine of our awesome new members are enthusiastic and actively participated in the pledge process. All of the guys did a great job of engaging in the brotherhood we have. As the weeks went by I noticed that the Zeta class truly bonded and formed some strong connections with each other.

This, no doubt, will serve them well as they take on larger leadership roles within the fraternity. With initiation over I am happy to call them all my brothers!”

The pledge retreat that took place at Thorn Acres over the weekend of November 12th was a key component of forming that strong connection. Now brother, Steve Frabotta ‘11 reflects on the experience as “a valuable part of the pledge process as it further strengthens the bond between the pledge class by learning a little more about each of our backgrounds.”

Initiation Their enthusiasm and dedication to Beta as New Members paid off, and on the November 20th all nine men were initiated. The ritual ceremonies were led by Ritual Chair Nicholas Orlando ’11 at the Administrative Office in Oxford, Ohio.

Ask a Beta Q: How did you come up with the title for it [your newsletter]?

A: Our newsletter is named after a poem

by Miss Will Allen Dromgoole entitled, The Bridge Builder.

This poem for us is what our brotherhood is all about. With the initiation of the Zeta class it is something we are all reflecting on.

For us it is something that summarizes the relationship of veteran brother to new brother.

Dromgoole’s words embody what we as brothers strive to accomplish in our daily interactions.

Eta Epsilon Unites with Lambda Kappa-Beta

The Lambda Kappa-Beta Chapter at Case Western Reserve University hosted its 26th annual Steven P. Arnold Walkathon to raise funds and awareness for diabetes.

Brother Steven Arnold, CWRU ’84, passed away owing to diabetic and cardiac complications. All proceeds from this event went to support the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland, a local non-profit that works to help those affected by Type I & II diabetes.

Ten of our JCU Betas joined forces with their CWRU brothers and participated in this walkathon.

numerous opportunities to help fulfill Milestones’ mission.

The event, hosted by Chapter Chorister Mark Ehrbar ‘12 and Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Sadie Curtin ‘13, was comprised of 9 acts.

Now that Milestones’ staff held a training session at one of our chapter meetings the hope is that brothers will be able to interact directly with children.

The first event will hopefully be scheduled before semester end.

Service/Philanthropy Co-Chair Chris Saniuk ’12 believes that “working with Milestones so far this year has been a pleasure. It’s very rewarding to see how appreciative Leslie [of Milestones] and her staff are towards our assistance. It’s very humbling to see how simple things can make such a big difference in these children’s lives. I’m looking forward to continuing to volunteer with them and establish strong relationships.”

Carroll’s Got Talent Eta Epsilon did not stop at simply volunteering their time however. On Friday, November 5th the fraternity hosted its annual, universitywide talent competition:

Contestants Jackie Orchard and Patrick Levandowski received first place. Second place went to jump roper Jaclyn Scholtz and third place to Mike O’Keefe for his guitar and vocal performance.

All participants will receive an event T-shirt.

Held each fall, this event raises funds to benefit whoever the fraternity’s philanthropy might be. This year, thanks to all who participated in and attended the event, $1200.00, was donated to Milestones. Another $275.00 was collected at Eta Epsilon’s Installation Mass the next day.

The funds will go to educating teachers, students, family & the community on Autism and how to work with these individuals.

Trenton Oczypok ’13 is recognized for his hard work in coordinating this event and his dedication and service to Milestones.

A Word From Our President (continued) Honorary Society, Order of Omega this past semester. A few weeks ago, Chris Shaheen and I were inducted as chapter members of Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society. Lastly, but certainly not least, the honor of Homecoming King was once again bestowed upon a Beta this year. Congratulations Andrew Vogel!

Closing out my term as chapter president of the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi is hard to say the least. I have been able to experience, see, and take part in once-in-a-lifetime events that have helped shape my Beta experience and life. There is no question that I would not be where I am today if I had not taken on the position of presidency.

Going into my term, I did not know what was going to be thrown at me. However, with the help of my executive board, fellow brothers, and advisory team we were able to overcome obstacles and continue to build a foundation that will change the lives of undergraduate men at Carroll.

I would like to thank each of you for giving me your support, guidance, and time this past year—it was a great time.

Remember, never underestimate how much you can accomplish in a day and continue to believe in how being a Beta can lead your life.

Alumni of the Quarter: Regis Scafe, Case Western Reserve ‘71 Steve Fedyk ‘12

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Regis Scafe, the head football coach at John Carroll.

Scafe graduated from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in 1971 with a degree in health and physical education.

While an undergraduate, Scafe was a member of the football and baseball teams as well as Beta Theta Pi. According to jcusports.com: “In 15 seasons as a head coach (5 at CWRU, 10 at JCU), Scafe has compiled a career coaching record of 87-67.” Coach Scafe claims that his involvement in Beta while an Mutual Assistance

undergraduate has taught him valuable lessons and has made him the man he is today.

Coach Scafe first got involved in Beta through friends he made while playing on the CWRU football team. Some of the team members were Betas and convinced him to join the second semester of his freshman year. He said that, “Beta has defined my college experience.” It gave him the sense of brotherhood that is also present in JCU’s Eta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Scafe went on to tell many impactful stories about brotherhood and how his brothers exhibited it. One story that made a lasting impression

was when a group of Coach Scafe’s Beta brothers came to support him as he coached his first ever football game at CWRU in 1994. Despite being 23 years removed from college, his brothers came without Scafe knowing or inviting them to support him and his career change.

Scafe believes that the “interaction and bonding that is formed with fraternity brothers is everlasting.” He continued to explain that a brother’s connections with Beta should not come to an abrupt halt after four years.

Brother Scafe is a true testament of keeping the Beta Spirit alive both on and off the field.
