LIVE ON UNIVERSITY (HIGHLIGHTS)
Outreach & Engagement The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hosted its annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Week in September 2022. During this week Dr. Hyppolite and bestselling author/motivational speaker Jonathan Sprinkles sat down to talk alongside the delivery of the Pathway to Belonging university address. This successful event was followed by a movie on campus, and other cultural celebrations and recognitions. DEI Week took place on all OU campuses, and the impact was well-received. Over 1,200 students, faculty, and staff benefited from this week of outreach and engagement.
Awareness The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a panel of accomplished women from the OU community (faculty, staff, alumni and partners) explored their experiences in various industries on March 30, 2023 at our annual Women in the Workplace Event. The webinar discussed the obstacles and achievements of working women. Participants will gain insight from industry professionals on topics from work-life balance to advocating for equity. Over 300 students, faculty and staff attended this event.
Education & Advocacy On April 5, 2023 OU community activists, leaders, researchers and changemakers gathered to learn from each other about the intersections of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility symposium (IDEA) on campus and in higher education.
National Diversity Awards The University of Oklahoma continues to be nationally recognized for its perseverance in nurturing a place of inclusion and belonging. Because of the work of the OU Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the campus community, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine honored OU with its Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award, which recognizes colleges and universities demonstrating an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. This is OU’s fifth time to receive this recognition (2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022 respectively). OU was one of 161 universities and colleges in the United States that received this honor. In addition to receiving the 2023 HEED Award, OU was also among 16 colleges and universities to receive INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s highest honor: Diversity Champion. Known for outstanding visionary leadership, Diversity Champions are leading institutions in the country that exemplify “an unyielding commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout their campus communities, across academic programs and at the highest administrative levels.” This is OU’s second time to receive this recognition, the first being in 2017.
The division was joined by University President, Joseph Harroz Jr., Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Belinda Higgs-Hyppolite and keynote speaker Dr. Wesley Long from the OU Department of Human Relations. Over 350 students attended this event.
