ike many of you, on December 22nd, 2011 I was minding my own business. I was wrapping-up a few items for the office, and wrapping a few last-minute gifts and sneaking them under the tree, beginning to sample the holiday treats that would add some winter bulk just in case I decided to hibernate, and making sure that the stockings were hung by the chimney with care.
301-206-5472
It was late in the afternoon when I got a call. From the University of Maryland. From the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life. With an offer of a house for the Eta Chapter on Fraternity Row. We now refer to it as “the call.”
www.alumni.psk-eta.com
I called John Wright (‘82), President of the Eta Housing Corporation. He was driving. I thought it best to ask if he would pull over to the side of the road. On your behalf, we accepted the University’s offer - and this began a whirlwind of conversations, e-mails, and appointments involving your Executive Committee, Six Columns Campaign Chairmen, University officials, and even a local hotel manager - all resulting in our Active members taking up residence at #2 Fraternity Row on January 25, 2012. In this issue we’ll try to bring you up to date, and tell you where we are headed. The remainder of 2012 should be equally interesting - if you want to be on board for the ride. Two issues ago, in this very space, I wrote “What we ain’t got is a chapter house.” Well, what a difference a day makes, right?. Enjoy this issue of our newsletter - er, magazine - because you made it possible. Many of you reading this, from the looks of our “Honor Roll of Donors” also made it possible for the Eta Chapter to have a new home on Fraternity Row. Damn Proud,

ETA CHAPTER NEWS News Briefs from the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland
After an exhilarating and somewhat chaotic semester, it is my pleasure as President of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa to report on some astounding achievements. We’re back! Back on the row again, that is. What seems like only a few short months ago, when I was elected President, I had made it our goal to return to the Row. We have accomplished just that. On the 23rd of January 2012, The Eta Housing Corporation crossed the T’s and dotted the I’s with University Officials. Three days later, twenty one undergrads moved into #2 Fraternity Row. We celebrated our monumental accomplishment with Alumni, Family, and Friends on April 21st when the Eta Alumni Association in conjunction with the Eta Housing Corporation and the Eta Chapter held our First Annual Open House. The weather held off long enough to enjoy a ribbon cutting ceremony on the front steps, preceded by the induction of new members of the Eta Chapter Hall of Fame , Chris McBeth ‘02, Joe Criscuoli ‘82, John Wright ‘82, and Wayne Bethards ’59. The activities at the house were followed by an evening at the Oracle Lounge where undergraduates, alumni, and families mingled well into the night. The undergraduates also held our first annual Bocce Ball Tournament on May 5th. We had over seventy persons in attendance from undergraduate members and other Greeks on campus to Alumni and university faculty. All proceeds from the event went to Special Olympics. A special thanks to Zach Gorrell ’12 and Nick Pirolli ’15 for making the event a terrific success. The Eta Chapter is doing great things at Maryland. We initiated twenty one eager new members into our Brotherhood this spring. We had a successful Greek Week, being paired with Alpha Phi, and our match up placed in the backdrop competition and
Chris Flood ‘13 the Canstruction event. We held our first away weekend and formal in Virginia Beach this April. We had sixteen Brothers attend the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation Fundraiser in the District. Our very own Joe Keenan was named Alpha Delta Pi’s Mane Man, and our football team was runner up in the Kappa Delta Shamrock Tournament. Team Eta took home the first place trophy for indoor soccer. We had a very triumphant and rewarding semester. I would like to express my thanks to all of my Brothers who have put their trust in me to lead our Fraternity, and who have dedicated endless hours to secure our success. These are the very same men that have watched me grow over the last three years while cultivating me into the leader that I am today. I would also like to articulate my appreciation not only to our alumni executive committee who is doing an admirable job, but also to those alumni who have been supporting us in every aspect of Fraternity. We are infinitely indebted to all of you. Just as I have challenged my Brothers to keep going the extra mile for our Brotherhood, I would now like to make a plea to all of you, take a look at where Eta is going. As we have regained our rightful threshold on Fraternity Row, we need your support so we may accomplish the rest of our goals, and once again reign supreme over Greek Life at Maryland. With your endorsement Eta is destined for greatness. Chris Flood, from Elkton, Maryland is majoring in Aerospace Engineering and will serve his second semester as President of the Eta Chapter this Fall. Summer 2012 The THIRD DEGREE

Of this semester’s accomplishments, the greatest one was getting a house back on fraternity row. The Eta Chapter returned to fraternity row in a new house with a new number, number two. During the two and a half years it took to reestablish Eta it had always been our goal to get back onto Fraternity Row as quickly a possible and become a strong force in the Greek community. With Phi Sig back on the row, this meant more opportunities to host many wonderful events including a Bocce Ball tournament and an Open House - and helped Eta to create an atmosphere where we could grow as scholars and men. Being back on Fraternity Row made an immediate impact on all members, including those who found themselves part of the scramble to be placed in the house.
In just two weeks, thirty-three brothers were released from their original housing contracts and placed into #2 Fraternity Row. Not only was this a miracle, but it required some creative logistics as well. Some brothers even had to live in a motel for a time, waiting for the house to become ready for us to move in. When all was said and done it was time for #2 to become home to the brothers living there and the brothers who are a part of the fraternity. Our movein created a new sense of unity and brotherhood never previously felt. With some creative adjustments and minor construction throughout the semester, the house became a home for everyone and before long, Eta was a new acquaintance to many on Fraternity Row. At this time, I would like to take the time to thank the Founding Fathers of the re-established Eta
An Eta Chapter Timeline Below, and on successive pages, is presented a timeline of milestones in the redevelopment of the Eta Chapter, from its earliest days on the campus of the University of Maryland to their first semester on Fraternity Row. These milestones were taken as excerpts from a history of the undergraduate effort as chronicled by Logan C. Miller ‘13, (right) one of Eta’s Founding Fathers.

This year was quite an exciting year for the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. Our membership grew from fifty to seventy-two members granting us “B” fraternity status. This was one of our first goals as a chapter to help re-establish Phi Sig at Maryland, but now we are striving for bigger and better things and that means over 100 members and reaching “A” fraternity status. Seeing the fraternity grow creates a new hope for the future, giving the active brothers new hope for the next several semesters and the momentum to recruit and accomplish that prestigious status of “A” fraternity.

There are many people to thank for this wonderful opportunity, but most of all we have to thank our alumni and be thankful for the support from the alumni. Without the alumni association members much of the events that occurred would not have been as successful as first planned - and without the alumni association there may not have been a new house. The Open House event was a big success because of the alumni. We had members from all decades come and show their support for Phi Sig, including an alumnus of Phi Sig from 1942...our oldest living member to date. It was an exciting day for both alumni and active brothers. The event helped create a renewed sense of brotherhood. Just seeing the many smiles on the faces of all the brothers brought together a sense of pride that could only be established in this type of setting. J. Victor (“Vic”)Alonso, from Silver Spring, Maryland majors in Geographical Information Systems and will serve his second semester as Alumni Chairman of the Eta Chapter this Fall.

Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. The seventeen seniors who graduated this year not only believed in this fraternity, but helped it to grow to what is has become today. Without these seventeen taking a step forward and listening to what Phi Sigma Kappa had to offer, our fraternity would not have achieved its standing. The courage, dedication and belief that these men possessed helped create a new life for many - including themselves. We tip our hats to you and reflect upon the memories you have brought us. We hope to keep Eta “classy” and make you proud to say that you are members, and Founding Fathers, of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa.
It is such a joy to live with a fraternity that actually strives to operate under the values in which the fraternity was founded, and that also seem to truly seek a real brotherhood. I was sad to see the five seniors who lived in your new home this spring graduate and move out of the house, but I also look forward to the many new residents who will call #2 Fraternity Row their home when the fall semester begins! Also, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to work with a chapter who works with and respects their alumni. That has really been a most welcome breath of fresh air. Katherine Kipp is obtaining a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing at the University of Maryland, where she works as the House Director for Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. She received her B.A. in English Writing and Journalism from Union University in 2009, followed by a Masters in English from Southeast Missouri State in 2011, where she taught English college composition for two years. Kipp has written for several newspapers, including The Jackson Sun, Southeast Missourian, Baptist Press, and the Commission Magazine, receiving the Southern Baptist Convention's President's Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2008.

Spring 2012 Rush, Recruitment & Greek Week Notes John Wright ‘15 In advance of Spring Rush we assembled a group of eight brothers to form a Recruitment Team. The Recruitment Team met before the start of the semester and planned events for the Spring Rush period. Events included watching a Maryland Basketball game in the new house, Wings Night, an Open House catered by our Alumni Association and more. Having a new fraternity house on the Row, recruiting was easier; we were able to concentrate our efforts and be more successful. Because our rush events were successful, we found ourselves better organized for rush and enjoyed a greater level of participation from the active Brothers - so much so that we initially gained twelve new associates. Immediately after Spring Break, a mid-semester rush week was held. This time the executive board planned events for rush including a 3-on3 basketball tournament on the court located at the house, a FIFA video game tournament, and a barbecue with a wide variety of artery-choking meat. Despite a greatly narrowed list of potential associates, this midsemester rush was successful and nine new associates joined the Eta Brotherhood. Our final tally: 21 new associates. Greek Week 2012 was an exciting time for Eta. We were able to show off our new house and enjoyed the convenience of being on the Row by simply opening our front door. These features added to the excitement and fun of the events all week. For this year’s events we were paired with the lovely sisters of Alpha Phi and the brothers of Lambda Chi. Greek Week Chairs Jay Gobeil and Johnny Wright were in charge of coordinating participation in all of the events - including a day of service, Athletics (football, volleyball and kickball), Olympics, Canstruction, Game Night, Skit and Backdrop - in addition to evening social events with our matchup. Our matchup finished third in Canstruction and second in Backdrop Design for a winning and enjoyable Greek Week. Eta made sure to impress the Alpha Phi’s and provide a stronger showing than the Lambda Chi’s. John Wright, from Burtonsville, Maryland majors in Civil Engineering and will serve as Co-Rush Chair and House Manager of the Eta Chapter this Fall.

FOUNDERS TAKE 3rd DEGREE A large number of “Founding Fathers” of the revitalized Eta Chapter became Alumni Members at the final meeting of the Spring Semester. Bagwell, Dom Cercone, Chris Monteil, Zach Gorrell, Adam Elbaz, Garrett Lewis, Scott Manski, Andrew Roberts, Miraj Patel, Jared Lindenberg, Ryan Kief, Omer Ad, Jay Gobeil, Roshan Shah, Mark Matovich, and Eric Harvey Congrats to our graduates, and welcome aboard to our new alumni members.
Why I Joined: Members of the Eta Chapter provide some insight into why they joined Maryland’s first fraternity. Zach Neigh ‘14 Aerospace Engineering Bangor Area High School Easton, PA When I first arrived at the University of Maryland, I never would have believed it if someone told me I was going to join a fraternity. I simply did not think that I belonged in Greek life. However, that view quickly changed by the next semester when my friend and I began to hang out with a few of the brothers from Phi Sigma Kappa. We were still a bit hesitant to join a fraternity, but these guys seemed different from the other typical Greek students on campus. They were engineering and science majors, they had their priorities in order, and yet they still had fun. They assured me that if I ever needed help with schoolwork, whether I joined or not, they would help me. The biggest factor for me was that by joining I would have the opportunity to be a part of something really great. By being a member, I would have the opportunity to lead the fight to restore the Fraternity's name and reputation. I could never pass up such a great opportunity. My friend ended up joining half-way through the spring semester, but I wanted to focus on my academics, so I waited until the following semester to join. Since then I can honestly say that it was the greatest decision that I have made here at Maryland. It may still only be my first semester in Phi Sigma Kappa, but I am now the newly elected Secretary of our chapter and my experiences this far have gone above and beyond all of my expectations.
Damn Proud!

Setting aside all preconceived notions of what it’s like to be a member of a fraternity, coming into college I wasn’t completely sure if I’d ever join one. The first time I met some of the guys I found out that they went to high school 15 minutes from me, so naturally we got along. The more I hung out with them, the more brothers I met. That was the crucial point for me. Once I got to know a large number of the brothers I became very comfortable and felt like I was a part of the fraternity. Once I was able to join, I made the commitment and haven’t had any regrets. I love every bit of it and I look forward to watching Phi Sigma Kappa grow and expand.
I came into college not even considering Greek life. I was always of the thought that these men were buying their friends when it came to pledging a fraternity. As the second semester of my freshman year came along I decided to take a look at fraternities here on campus. I went to a bunch of houses and met many brothers and I became interested in becoming a fraternity man but could not find the right bunch of guys for me. One of my friends told me about a fairly new organization named Phi Sigma Kappa, and said I should come meet them with him. I agreed and I was not disappointed. The group of men I met in the following weeks were down to earth, respectable, athletic, and most importantly I felt like these were my "type" of men. I also joined because this fraternity is growing and shaping up into the chapter that it once was. I am Damn Proud to be part of this organization and can't wait to bring success back to the Eta Chapter here at the University of Maryland.
I joined Phi Sigma Kappa in order to gain brothers and best friends, to develop as a young adult and have great experiences. I don’t have a biological brother and my best friends from high school don’t go to UMD so I turned to fraternity for a group of close friends. PSK has a great blend of guys, representing all interests and personalities however they all treat each other as equals and moreover always help another brother. Through Phi Sigma Kappa I can contact alumni and learn from interacting with them. As well, I’ll learn necessary social skills of life as well as leadership possibilities only available through Greek Life. Lastly, the Eta Chapter knows how to have a good time, not only at tailgates or on weekends, but hanging out with my brothers is the best part of my week. Chapter Advisor Chris McBeth Wins Prestigious Award By Drury G. Bagwell ‘64, Past Grand President, PSK
As an undergraduate, Chris served as President, and has used this experience to help the chapter achieve remarkable success. He is young enough to relate to the men, yet old enough to be completely detached from the collegiate lifestyle. And, he has helped the chapter develop the right set of values in order to establish a quality group. Chris attends almost every single fraternity meeting and Executive Board meeting. He comes to the house for special occasions. He maintains almost daily contact with the chapter officers via email, and he regularly talks with the Chapter President. And, in doing so, he provides wise and mature advice to the men. Chris has supported the other chapter advisors, including Dr. Terry Zacker, their Academic Advisor. He stresses the need for top scholarship in order for

And, lastly, Chris is helping the chapter to build for long-term success. He understands that for the chapter to be a quality experience the men need to build a solid foundation, based on the values and standards that are the cardinal principles of Phi Sigma Kappa. He has stressed the action words in the Cardinal Principles - STIMULATE Scholarship, PROMOTE Brotherhood, and DEVELOP Character. Chris and his wife Alison have two adorable children, Caden and Brooklyn, and he is a Talent Broker at SRA International. Chris McBeth deserves a great deal of the credit for the chapter’s success to date. And he brings great honor to Phi Sigma Kappa in that he was selected as the top Chapter Advisor from among 55 other fraternities and sororities at Maryland. Congratulations to Chris on this prestigious award.

Brother Neigh Selected as Zillgitt Leadership Institute Delegate By Michael Carey, Executive Director, PSK The Grand Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa has selected Zach Neigh ‘14 as one of the delegates to the annual Robert M. Zillgitt Leadership Institute, to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana this August. Selection to the Zillgitt Institute is quite an honor; only the best are chosen. Zach and the other Phi Sig student leaders will have the opportunity to participate in leadership and management seminars that take participants on a leadership journey. The Zillgitt Leadership Institute has been made possible through the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation from a bequest of the estate of the late Court of Honor member Robert Zillgitt. Brother Zillgitt was a champion of developing chapter leaders, and Zach will be part of his legacy. As a result of a grant from the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation, Zach’s travel to and from Indianapolis will be paid for by the Grand Chapter along with his registration for the Leadership School and one night’s lodging. Typically, only twenty Brothers from across the country are selected for this honor, and never more than one per chapter. Chapter members view it as a very high honor, and many of the Zillgitt classes remain good friends after the Institute and after graduation. The Zillgitt Institute is a program that members place on their resumes right under their education. The Zillgitt Institute is a program of specialized leadership training and experience, and character development, centered around the individual
member, and is dedicated to creating stronger members and a greater Fraternity. Members receive training in group dynamics and facilitation, visioning for their organization, moral reasoning, and engage in thought-provoking discussions and learn skills that can be directly translated back to their peers through exercises of learning and selfdevelopment. Welcome to the Emerald City… #2 Fraternity Row by John J.B. Wright ‘82 2nd Vice President Eta Alumni Association “Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore,” Dorothy said, as she looked around at the colorful flowers and a yellow-bricked road. This was the sentiment felt by many of the parents and alumni who toured the new Chapter House of the Eta Chapter at our Open House event. They looked at the ten foot cherry conference table, the customized executive chairs, the leather couches, the 82" HD television and, yes, noticed the absence of a bar and were heard to say, “This isn't a Frat House, it’s a resort,” and “I have never seen a Fraternity House this nice!” and more often than we could count, “Can I go back to college and live here?” Much like the tornado that brought Dorothy and Toto to Oz, the events leading up to our Open House were just as swift. On December 22, 2011 we were informed that a house on Fraternity Row would be available. On January 15, 2012 the University officially offered #2 Fraternity Row to Eta Chapter, provided we could facilitate the release of our active members from their dormitory housing agreements and move them out of their dorm rooms within six days, without a promise that they could be in the Chapter House before classes started just ten days away. Like Dorothy, we had no option but to ‘Hold On’ and take the ride. In the end, the first day of classes came and actives were unloading a truck full of their belongings into our new Home. We took a breath, looked around... and started a brand new adventure. On April 21, 2012, the Eta Chapter held its official Open House and Dedication. Over 150 total attendees, including parents and family, alumni and actives, were on hand. The actives provided walking tours through the House, pointing out all the improvements that had been made in the short two months they had been in the house, and all the improvements that are planned for the house over the upcoming year, a.k.a. the "Wish List". “I really en14

joyed the tour. The brothers that conducted it were so informative and polite.” “They are so appreciative of the alumni efforts in making this House possible.” and “The actives are very impressive. It is so great that they could get into a House on the Row” were some of the many comments made by the alumni upon touring the House. As the active members walked attendees “down the yellow-bricked road” through the House, the guests got to view many wondrous sights. It started with the custom 'Phi Sigma Kappa' Crest graphics on the Foyer Floor. They then wandered up the two flights of stairs and were able to see the brothers' rooms on each floor, the composites of past years hanging on the walls and more PSK graphics on the Hall Floors. Brothers then led their guests to the Study Room (formerly known as the TV room) on the First Floor. Equipped with a ten foot cherry conference table, writing desk, file cabinet, and custom embroidered executive chairs, reading “Eta Chapter” above the circled T's, the room is used for Executive meetings and, primarily, studying. I have been very pleasantly surprised that no matter when I stopped by the House in my role as Housing

Corp. President, there is always a brother or several in the room studying. Guess this is why they have the fifth highest Chapter GPA of all Fraternities on campus, 3.28. The walls of the Study Room display plaques and awards dating back to 1958 as well as the Eta Hall of Fame, eight rows of plaques dedicated to alumni inducted, since its inception in 1986, for their service to the chapter . In the Study Room, for this special event, the Brothers had set up several personal computers and invited alumni to take a few minutes, sit down, and make a video recording of their memories of joining Phi Sigma Kappa. This constituted the ‘Kick-Off’ of a joint project of the Alumni Association and the Active Chapter to document the history of Eta Chapter.
Most Senior Alumni Visits New Chapter House
The tours continued to the 'House Mother's suite. Yes, they have a House Mother who lives full-time in the house. Technically called a “SARF” (Student Advisory Residence Follow), she is a University graduate student employed by the University to assist the Chapter with the operations and maintenance of the house. Our “SARF” is far from the “Wicked Witch of the West” and much more akin to “Glenda the Good Witch.” Katherine Kipp is a Kappa Delta alumni from Missouri University working towards her Masters in Fiction Writing. She is present to attend to all facility issues but also makes herself available, not unlike a big sister, to direct and guide the actives with sage advice on house, school or personal issues they may have. We are all very pleased to have Katherine as part of our family. Guests were then ushered into the Chapter Room (formerly the Living Room). This room is now the main living and gathering room used by the Chapter. It features a pool table lit by hanging tiffany lamps, leather couches and a poker table with leather chairs. The centerpiece of the room is a 82" high-definition television housed in a cherry wall cabinet. Even the alumni could watch, without our glasses. As much as things change, it is nice to see some things remain the same. The fireplace, centered in the room as before, still displays below its mantle a brass plaque honoring the names of Brothers of Eta Chapter who gave their lives serving our country in World War II. At the end of their tour, the alumni and parents found themselves in the basement. There they saw the laundry room, kitchen, dining room and kitchenette. The kitchenette is an informal eating area featuring Pub Tables and chairs, a 42" wall-mounted television, kitchen counter with refrigerator, micro-wave and toaster oven. It is used by the Brothers on weekends and between meals. The Alumni Association sponsored a full lunch buffet set out in the dining area, offering fried chicken, chicken salad, cupcakes and more. Parents, actives and alumni mingled, sat, ate, and told stories of their time in college and their impressions of the

The day's celebration continued with the House Dedication ceremony held on the front porch. With the front lawn filled with parents, alumni and guests, the ceremony included speeches, of course, but also many honors and awards. The undergraduates presented awards honoring their Academic Advisor, Dr. Terry Zacker. They also presented plaques honoring those who they inducted into the Eta Chapter Hall of Fame: Tim Vojtasko, Grand Chapter President and former Colony Advisor; Chris McBeth '01, Chapter Advisor; Joe Criscuoli '82, President of the Eta Alumni Association; Wayne Bethards '59, Alumni Association First Vice-President; and John Wright '82, President of the Eta Housing Corporation . A formal ribbon cutting ceremony followed, featuring Chris Flood, ‘12, Eta Chapter President; Bob Nichols, University Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and myself. The Ceremony was made all the more memorable by the attendance of: John T. Harrison '42; the most senior member of our Alumni Association; Hon. Thomas V. “Mike” Miller ' 64, President of the Maryland Senate; John R. Tydings '63, former Chairman of the University Board of Regents, and many, many more Alumni, all of whom have provided the support and contributions that made this day possible. Eta Alumni Association News
By Wayne H. Bethards, Class of 1959 First Vice President Eta Alumni Association
In 2010 the Eta Alumni Association adopted a legacy "Rings & Pins Program" developed and proposed by Robert G. "Bob" Pemberton, Class of 1958. Under the program Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity pins, donated by alumni of the Eta Chapter, are awarded to Chapter members for outstanding performance. The past and present officers of the Eta Colony, now the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa, were honored in an emotional surprise ceremony at the Chartering Banquet on March 12, 2011. Joe Criscuoli, President of the Eta Alumni Association, introduced the "Rings & Pins Program" and, in a presentation ceremony that many called the highlight of the evening, presided over the initial awards to: Jay Gobeil, pin donated by Robert P. Haines, H'49, and presented by Wayne Bethards, H'59. Adam Elbaz, pin donated and presented by Robert G. Pemberton, H'58. Logan Miller, pin donated and presented by Joseph B. Creegan, H'56. Gavin Bedell, pin donated by Thomas O. Nichols, H'57; presented by Lary Acker, H'57. Ryan Kief, pin donated by Grady A. Vickers, Jr., H'55; presented by Todd Hoffman, H'82. Roshan Shah, pin donated by William B. Binch, H'62, and presented by Peter DellaCroce, H'99. Mark Matovich, pin donated and presented by Lowell B. Hinchliffe, H'57. Dom Cercone, pin donated and presented by James E. Kenkel, H'55. Zach Gorrell, pin donated by Robert A. Margulies, H'54; presented by John Wright, H'82. Omer Ad, pin donated by Lucian S. Heflin, Jr., H'61, and presented by Lance Billingsley, H'61. To assure that the program be sustainable over time as a traditional chapter leadership recognition honor, it was necessary to limit the number of an-
nual pin awards to match the expected pace of pin donations. To this end your Alumni Association made the decision that future awards would go to each incoming Chapter President and that the pearl pin would be outfitted with a pearl guard with the president's gavel dangle. Each donated pearl pin set will be accompanied with a biographical sketch prepared by the alumni donor of the pin. A president's pin set donated by former Eta Chapter president Philip E. Burr, H'60, was presented by Joe Criscuoli to incoming chapter president Chris Flood upon his induction as president at the Eta Chapter Ritual Meeting on December 12, 2011. Our current pin inventory will assure the continuation of this leadership recognition honor for the next few years, but new pin donations are essential and very much appreciated. Feel free to clip the form on the left facing page to donate your pin. We look forward to your continued support of this special program! We Should All Be So Lucky Brother, and former Eta Chapter Advisor, Allen S. Kogut ‘75 has quite a lucky streak - or actually a talent streak - to report. Allen and Maureen, his wife, have been blessed with six children...but that’s not the streak. Brotherhood Has Its Benefits by Michael Cator ‘10
Here is a story about a “Brother in Need.” I’ve learned that being a brother of Phi Sigma Kappa has many benefits, whether it may be the attractive feature of making instant friends for life, sharing common bonds, participating in social events along with Brothers, or just being a member of one of the best fraternities the University of Maryland has to offer. However, in October of 2011, I truly felt part of something amazing and learned a lesson about Brotherhood - and the fact that it does last forever that really hit home for me. Following graduation, I had landed a job in New York. But six months later I was able to transfer to San Diego and moved west to fulfill my dream of living on the “other” coast. But, after just two months, I was laid off from the job that I had obtained and thought my dream of being on the west coast was perhaps going to result in my taking up full-time residence on the beach. Just after joining the ranks of the unemployed, I was able to reach out to Joseph Criscuoli, our alumni President and one of the most loyal brothers that I know. Joe explained to me that he could send out a “Brother in Need” alert to Eta Alumni in any area of the country that I wanted to call home. As you can imagine, I wanted to stay in California. So Joe said he would send the appeal directly to Brothers in that particular area. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect. In today’s world you can send your resume to 100 people and not hear back for months, if at all. However that’s not how this went down...not at all. After the “Brother In Need,” blast was sent out, I received multiple phone calls from Brothers asking for my permission to submit my resume to their company and offering immediate interview opportunities. Brothers called me and took time out of their day to personally give me very good advice on how to make my resume more appealing, and one Brother arranged a meeting with me for lunch to talk oneon-one about ways that I could be more proactive in my job search.
I have to say that after such a nerve-wracking experience as losing my job, and being so far away from home, the Brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa were right there to keep my morale as high as it has ever been. This without a doubt was a prime example of how strong a brotherhood we have in our fraternity - Phi Sigma Kappa. In conclusion I was able to land a position working as a regional account representative for a company called Managed Healthcare Associates, back home in New Jersey. It may not be California, but I am very happy with where I am and with my new career. I just hope that any Brother out there young or old - whenever in need will never hesitate to reach out. I know I didn’t, and with Eta Alumni behind you, your Brothers will make you feel as if anything is possible.

Eta All-Stars Attend 2nd Annual “Night Out with the Nats” Nationals Park - Washington, D.C. May 18, 2012
A
s American as baseball and Phi Sig. A clear, pleasant May evening. Interleague play. Two 1st place teams--the Orioles and the Nationals. What could be better? Enjoying the game with fellow Eta brothers.
On May 18th, Eta Alumni and family met at Nationals Park to watch a great game and renew our bonds of brotherhood. The evening kicked off with alumni meeting under the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk to share a few cold ones and some stories of seasons gone by. Being their first time at the park, Doug Bach and Bill Walsh were very impressed with the stadium and even more impressed with the “Miller Lite Girls” handing out souvenirs. Jim Allen and his son, Dan, a Phi Sig from George Mason, joined the gang for a round. John Wright and Leon Boulavsky completed the team for batting practice. Game time saw over twenty alumni and family members sitting in great seats down the right field foul line. The whole terrific event was put together by our great "General Manager", Jim Allen, ‘77 who procured the group seats. Jim graciously donated the
proceeds from ticket sales to the Eta Housing Corporation to go towards improvements to our new home at #2 Fraternity Row. Joining our bull pen were Johnny Wright and Alex Yee, two current undergraduate brothers of the Eta Chapter, and Nick Karas, a 1963 Eta alumni. Nick and Jane, his wife, enjoyed meeting the other brothers and passed on some stories about his roommate and living in the Chapter House during the '60's. He expressed his pleasure in the Chapter getting a new house and returning to Fraternity Row. Talk about absent brothers led to a “call to the bull pen”. Michael Boulavsky was called, and informed the team that he was glad to know we were talking about him...and that he was in Houston. The evening was so great we did not want it to end. So the teams obliged us and went to extra innings ending on a great note for some, as the O's won on an 11th-inning home run off the bat of Nick Markakis. I would say Jim Allen hit for the cycle with this event. A great big "Thank You" to Jim for a wonderful evening and for all his support for the Eta chapter. I'm looking forward to seeing Jim and many others at the ballpark this summer and at Homecoming in the Fall. - John J.B. Wright, ‘82

3rd Degree Members Congratulations on your recent graduation, and on your recent elevation to members of the 3rd Degree. We welcome you to the largest association of Phi Sig Alumni in the nation. We hope that you will remain members of this group for a long time to come, and we hope that you will want to continue the tradition of leadership started by the Founding Fathers of the new Eta Chapter, and consider taking a leading role in the direction of this association. As you know, we passed a very special resolution granting all Eta graduates a year of membership in our association at no cost. The fact that you are reading this is evidence of our commitment to building a strong relationship to the future of our association. Before too long, it will be time for us to communicate details about our Alumni/Actives Cookout and Homecoming. At this point we want to ask that you complete an Alumni Data Sheet to update us on the best ways to reach you in the near future. Taking a moment to send this information to us will ensure that you do not soon turn up on our “Lost” list. Thanks for your service to the Eta Chapter, and please keep in touch. Charles E. “Silk” Murray
Eta Class of 1955
August 24, 1933 – February 27, 2012 While notice was published in the most recent issue of The Signet, it is with deep regret that I advise Eta Chapter actives and alumni of the passing of “Silk” Murray on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, Maryland. A native and lifelong resident of Reisterstown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Charles Henry Stanley Murray and Edith Zentz Murray. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lity Murray, his daughter Dawn and her husband David Frederick, of Eldersburg, Maryland and a grandson, Daniel Frederick. A fun-loving guy, Silk will long be remembered for his enthusiasm for life and his sense of humor. I still remember him in that red 1948 Ford convertible with the roof down, irrespective of the season or weather. The “hot” noisy muffler served to bring forth a quite unnecessary additional level of attention to himself. After the University of Maryland, Silk took over and operated a family clothing cleaning business in Reisterstown, and was most involved in civic activities, including serving as the president of the local chamber of commerce and president of the area Jaycees organization. Sadly enough, time marches on and the ranks of Eta Chapter Alumni continue to thin, but time still permits our looking back with fond recollection of brothers like Charles “Silk” Murray and the infectious spirit of fun that always accompanied him. - Jim Starnes, H’55

A Final Thought...
n just a few months we’ll be gathering together once more to celebrate Homecoming. Only this time, for members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa, this event will be more than an event wrapped around a football game. It truly will be a homecoming. It will be an event to be remembered - a homecoming to remember forever.
I
One wants to have a quick answer, for this seems to be some form of measure of one’s worth, value, and/or ability to contribute to the task at hand, that of answering the question. But one also wants to provide the very best answer. Seems like a lot of pressure to put on oneself, but it’s a condition of the human species.
Because of the dedicated efforts of so many people - Brothers, Friends, and Family Members - the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa has achieved what very few thought would be possible just ten years ago: back on campus, a recognized chapter of the Maryland Greek System, a growing active membership, a team of learned advisors, a thriving alumni association, a capital campaign poised to meet its goals, and occupying a house on Fraternity Row.
We don’t have a quick answer. Sue us.
It seems fitting at this time, with all the effort that has been put forth to-date and with all that has so far been accomplished, to pause and pose to ourselves a quick question: “Well, what’s next?” Questions, by their very nature, seem easy to pose and fairly quick to spring forth. One feels a burning desire to ask, and one does so. Simple. Quick. Over and done. That’s that. Answers, however, seem to take a bit longer. One wants to appear to have studied the question, and formulated options for review and consideration. 44

The THIRD DEGREE
During the coming weeks and months we will be looking to you, our members, to help determine the answer to “Well, what’s next?” For certain, the number of members in our association, and our success in meeting the goals of our capital campaign will, in part, provide some of the answers. We think our third year will be just a great as our last two, and we hope you will share with us your vision, desires, and hopes for our association. Thank you for the votes of confidence you have provided to-date, and for your anticipated and, we hope, continuing support. Damn Proud,
The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa
You wouldn’t make him wait, would you?
Renewing your membership for “Year 3” by August 31st is very important. Our membership year runs from July 1st to June 30th, so receiving your “dues” donation early in the membership year gives us the ability to budget for the expenditures of our association, plan terrific events, keep our website online, publish a few small newsletters, and keep our association fiscally strong. We thank you for your support during the last two years - and promise that this coming year will be filled with the kinds of achievements you’ve come to expect from your alumni association. We hope you’ll be with us for “Year 3” and that we will hear from you very soon. By these things We stand. Damn Proud, The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa
Undecided about making your gift to the Six Columns Campaign? With a generous gift… ...you help to create a legacy of having helped to put the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa back onto Fraternity Row. ...you help to create a “Castle on the Row,” to create a home you’ll be proud to visit, and an asset that will enable the active chapter to compete for the top new recruits at the University of Maryland. ...you help to create a chapter house where actives, alumni, parents and prospective members walk through the “Six Columns” in front of #2 Fraternity Row and experience the legacy of Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity. It’s time to do more than read about our new chapter house...it’s time to become a part of it. Only one question remains:
Will You Help Us?
