I

f you are reading this magazine, you probably recognize this note card. During the past twelve months, I’ve had the privilege to mail out 346 of these cards to new members of our revitalized alumni association. Every time we added a member, I sent a card. Every time I sent a card….I thanked my lucky stars for the tremendous level of support shown by so very many of my Brothers.

At this time, our association is engaged in a great crusade. In the very worst economy in memory, we are trying to renew memberships, reach 400 total paid members, and at the same time raise the charitable gifts necessary to enable the return of the Eta Chapter to Fraternity Row via our “Six Columns” fund.

In the last issue, I wrote “What we ain’t got is a chapter house.” Given this economy, what some have told me is, “What you ain’t got is no sense.”

Well, OK, maybe so. But I still believe that the active members of the Eta Chapter deserve our support, that the Eta Alumni Association can maintain its position as having the largest alumni group of Phi Sig’s in the country, and that we can grow the “Six Columns” fund so we are ready to return to Fraternity Row as soon as a spot opens up. I think you want to be a part of this effort - to step up and help slam the door on the nay-sayers who thought we’d never stage such a glorious comeback.

The THIRD DEGREE: What first compelled you to become a member of Phi Sigma Kappa?

Bruce Gordon: I attended St Josephs College in Philadelphia my freshman year. There were no fraternities at the time, and I was asked by some friends if I wanted to help start a chapter. At the time, we selected Phi Sigma Kappa based on the founders principals and because of the sincere interest and involvement from the National Headquarters. Our initiation was conducted in 1975 at the National Headquarters (then located in suburban Philadelphia) with the help of the Kent State Chapter.

TTD: What things did you learn as a member of Eta Chapter that have served you well in life?

Bruce Gordon: Eta Chapter was a collection of young men that moved as one team. We were not the golden boys or the trust fund babies, but people from all socioeconomic backgrounds and from all across the country. While we were surely a circle of friends within the house, we also learned to promote leadership, delegate tasks and to work together in order to achieve goals - from rebuilding the chapter room to painting the house. In short, we learned responsibility.

My life in business has been focused on start up and turn around situations on a global basis. I have built successful teams by, building upon my Eta experience, assembling diverse groups designed to work together. While we are not all the very best of friends, we all understand the importance of individual contributions towards a team goal, and making sure that each of us are as demanding of ourselves as we are of others. Give people responsibility, and they will grow as a person, and in business.

TTD: What advice would you want to share with our current undergraduate members?

Bruce Gordon: Four years is a short period of time in your life. And for most, it is the first time away from home, and making decisions on your own. Learn from your Brothers, both the positive and the negative, and understand what a true friendship is. When you graduate and reality sets in, use the tools and knowledge you have acquired towards your success in business and in life. Most successful business leaders I have met came from the Greek System - where they learned the valuable tools of responsibility, respect, team work and success.

TTD: What was your most triumphant moment as an undergraduate?

Bruce Gordon: Finally graduating.

TTD: What's your most favorite memory of life as a member of Eta Chapter?

Bruce Gordon: My son joined a fraternity at Southern Methodist University, here in Texas.

When my family went to visit him one day, they commented on the strong odor from within the fraternity house. I just smiled - and told them what they found malodorous was the perfume of stale beer. I felt at home once again.

That and Steve Cooper wearing the same bathrobe everyday for a year!

He Lives...really!

In our last issue, your Alumni Association proudly and happily announced the removal from our Chapter Eternal the name of Brother Daniel S. Newell ’76.

Brother Newell promptly joined our alumni association with a generous donation, and even let us take his photo at the PreHomecoming event at the Oracle Lounge - proof positive that he is alive and well.

He’s Done It The Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa is grateful for the advice and counsel of Brother J. Eric Vinson ’86. “The Vin” is a valuable member of our Audit Committee and he recently announced that your Alumni Association has attained taxexempt status with the IRS, and will soon achieve the same with the State of Maryland. A welldeserved pat on the back, Brother.

He’s The Best We just can’t say enough about Claude Bogley, 70. A master recruiter for our Alumni Association, Brother Bogley was singlehandedly responsible for rallying a tremendous turnout for both the Pre-Homecoming gathering at the Oracle Lounge and the Alumni Tailgate in Lot 1. His dedication, energy and perseverance benefitting the Eta Alumni Association is greatly appreciated and worthy of recognition.

Those who have “Liked” the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa on Facebook are already aware of this feat, but we need to share with you some news about Brother Chris Malone ‘86. Chris, (a.k.a. “Mayday”) has been an enthusiastic supporter of our Alumni Association - almost single-handledly funded the formation of the Eta Housing Corporation. Now we are very proud to share with you that Chris was recently published, not once but three times, in Forbes magazine.

In the Family In our last issue (Spring 2011, page 42) we profiled two Eta Legacies - Raymond Bounds ‘14, the grandson of Boyd I. Bounds ‘57, and Scott Hoffman ‘13, the son of Todd B. Hoffman ‘82. We now proudly add to this list John Wright ‘15, the son of Jane and John J.B. Wright ‘82, our 2nd Vice President. As they say, third time is a charm. Our best wishes to all our Legacies.

More Mag News Brother Joe Criscuoli ‘82 has been pretty busy of late. Between the publication of the last issue of “The THIRD DEGREE” and this current issue, he has prepared two different magazines on behalf of his current employer, EPIColorspace, a full-service marketing communications firm headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The first publication, entitled “Trade Shows Work”, is a 40 -page magazine that provides useful information to business leaders considering, or attempting to justify, participation in trade show exhibits as a method to building corporate revenue. The second publication is a 44-page magazine, entitled “PhotoBook”, that presents many of the creative trade show exhibits designed and produced by EPI-Colorspace.

The THIRD DEGREE: What was your most triumphant moment as an undergraduate?

Terry Chapman: First of all, let’s be practical. To graduate for sure! In terms of being a Phi Sig brother, it was being selected Pledge Inductor, and standing in front of the fireplace in our fraternity house at #7 Fraternity Row, presenting our fraternity’s history and what we expected from our new pledges. Looking out at all those eager faces of new brothers, just beginning their Phi Sig experiences that first pledge meeting, I knew they’d be glad they joined and I would help them get started.

Less triumphant for me, but more so for the Eta Phi Sigma Kappa pledge class of 1961-1962, occurred later on that year when those same pledges “kidnapped” me (a common practice in the 1960’s) from my room at the fraternity house at about 9:00 pm one evening as I tried to do some studying. On the plus side, I’m told they only kidnap those they admire! They drove me blindfolded about 45 minutes and I had no idea where I was. No cell phones then, but by 10:30 pm, after walking a mile or more, I finally found a house with the lights on.

They called off their dogs and, though very surprised by my plight, let me phone a very surprised brother, Art Hermann. He picked me up and drove me back to the fraternity house. Now that’s brotherhood!

A close second was when I stood on the 18th green at the University of Maryland Golf Course (before there was any clubhouse), shouting my excitement for Phi Sigma Kappa having just won the University Fraternity Golf league for 1962, my Senior year. I played as the “5th man” with Art Hermann as “#1 man” and many other skillful brothers. A wonderful, satisfying team victory with guys I truly enjoyed being with. We also won at Inter-fraternity softball and football during my years at the university.

TTD: What did you learn from being a Phi Sigma Kappa Brother?

Terry Chapman: I learned that, for me, I need a close group of friends who can share my successes and failures. I also learned to get along with other people even when you disagree on occasion. These lessons in group living have helped me ever since. Phi Sigma Kappa expected me to produce good results in school and in fraternity activities. When I struggled with grades my sophomore year, the fraternity encouraged me and when I moved into the house, I got much better grades. Finally, I realized while on campus, but even more as the years went by, that a real sense of fraternity and friendship could help you, challenge you, and also make you a better person than you thought you could ever be!

TTD: How have those lessons served you since you left the University of Maryland?

Terry Chapman: Joining the US Naval Reserves right out of college, just before Viet Nam heated up, I faced some challenging personal situations, stationed aboard an intelligence gathering ship out of Little Creek, VA, I had the ability to get along with my shipmates, many of whom, had far different backgrounds and values than me! Then in my careers in federal government social service administration, and later in education, I was always able to assess the professional or social situation I was in and choose the correct strategies and actions to succeed. Some of this know-how came from my Phi Sigma Kappa experiences at #7 Fraternity Row. Lastly, much of my later career has focused on helping adults choose the right vocation and to assist those facing career difficulties, and I’ve always felt like I was “paying back” everyone who helped me along the way, including my fraternity brothers at Eta Chapter.

TTD: What advice would you want to share with our undergraduate members?

Terry Chapman: First of all, participate fully in your chapter’s activities and try to hold a role like President, Pledge Advisor, or whatever position fits your interests. You’ll realize more of your potential and your fraternity will appreciate all that you do for the common good. Secondly, balance your university activities and your fraternity activities. Take advantage of university clubs, intramural sports, community projects, and internships to broaden your interests and potentially increase your life satisfaction level. Think “Life goals” not “job goals” as you will not only work as an adult but have leisure time as well. Your generation will live 20 years or more following your retirement (I know you will never be that old), so long range interests do count! Use all of your God-given gifts of skills, temperament, and attributes to make your life a rich one, regardless of your income level. Finally, start now to build your career by getting some actual work experience while you are in school with internships or cooperative education, and of course summer jobs. Ask everyone you meet - family, friends, teachers - about possible careers - what they like and don’t like about their jobs in social service, law, teaching, or corporate pursuits. Then strive to find a job that lets you do “what you truly enjoy doing that you are good at doing” and you will lead a happy, productive life. Keep working toward your goals. You are indeed the Captain of your soul. Enjoy your voyage!

TTD: What are your leisure interests in retirement?

Terry Chapman: I enjoy spending quality time with my twin Granddaughters Emma and Wiley who just started kindergarten. Soon I will teach them about fishing and nature in general which will be fun and challenging! Fly fishing is my number one pastime.

It combines nature with athletic ability in casting, and also artistic expression in tying trout flies. I also play golf with my oldest son Jon, who teaches high school science to students with substance abuse issues in Boston. I fish with my younger son Dan, father of the twins, who works in student affairs as a senior mentor at MIT. He enjoys fly fishing and also the 19th hole in golfing. Lastly, I volunteer my resume assistance to all Eta Phi Sigma Kappa brothers. I also help folks with career issues at the Worcester, MA Public Library every Tuesday and so far have reached over 500 persons. Every adult, whether in college, or mid-life, or later, has a fascinating life journey to share and it inspires me to hear their story and help them on their journey!

Brotherhood Has Its Benefits

C

ollege is filled with stages of uncertainty. The doubt and stress begins in high school with SATs, applications, and college visits and goes away once you get those amazing, inspiring, I-gotta-tell-Mom acceptance letters. Then move-in day approaches and that uneasy feeling often comes back even stronger, like that smell in the kitchen you covered yesterday with Febreze. Finally, here you are! As the first few weeks go by you meet your friends, start your classes and realize...you made it! You're the cats meow, the bees knees, and the big man on campus all rolled into one awesome package of scholar. A year or two rolls by, and you reach the lowest levels of uncertainty possible. You realize the caste system of senior-trumps-junior-trumps-sophomore from high school no longer applies (yes, freshman are still low man on the totem pole). You're a seasoned veteran of the residence halls. You can get around campus without looking at the bus map every ten minutes. You've been yelled at by RA’s and you're still standing. In a couple classes your professors start telling you, "Listen, you'd better start thinking about getting internships for the summer if you ever want to get a job and put this degree to good use," but hey, you've got two more summers before you graduate!

One day you wake up, roll out of bed, eat a piece of pizza out of the box on the floor and get on your computer. Time to sign up for classes! Let's see what I have to take... a semester of 300 and 400 level classes. What? No... Not yet... I'm not ready!!

The uncertainty of life starts to break through the protective cocoon of your college campus. You realize the worry you had about college pales in comparison to the prospects of a full time job, responsibilities, and what life will be like if you don't find the RIGHT job. Waves of doubt and suspense start to hit you slowly, but there's a storm off shore and its getting closer. Time passes, and you start applying to jobs. You sign up for the school's career site, and start submitting your resume only to receive the numbing absence of replies. So, you go to a resume clinic on campus, and hear about what your resume is supposed to do, how you should sell yourself, what employers are 18 Winter 2011

looking for... and it’s confusing. You start putting a few different versions together, since a dozen people have told you conflicting things about what you should do, but who can you trust?

Oh, wait, you're in Phi Sigma Kappa? Eta Chapter?

There is hope! Terry Chapman, Eta Alum, Ph.D. in Adult Education with special talents in career development, a veteran of thousands of resume reviews, has offered his service. As you may have guessed by now, I am currently searching for a job after college. I have taken my resume to professors, clinics, advisers, and employers. However, one email I received this year, helped me stay calm in the angry face of an uncertain job market. It contained an offer for resume help and an email address. I took the offer and sent Terry my resume.

He asked about my career goals and aspirations and was off. He sent back an edited resume complete with a Summary of Qualifications that wrapped up everything I wanted a potential employer to know.

Since then I've made multiple edits, changed the format, added and removed different parts, and each time I have sent the draft to Terry. He has always responded with feedback and advice, asking more questions about the items on my resume in order to draw out important information I omitted. I know my resume will see more changes before the semester ends. However, right now I can walk into a career fair or submit my resume online confident that it has been approved by a man of experience who knows his work isn't about words on a page, but rather the person behind the bullet points. I urge every one of my brothers to contact Terry and take advantage of having such a knowledgeable and committed resource. Thank you Terry Chapman, for your selfless offer and continued support.

2011 HOMECOMING REPORT

H

ow great it is to hear these two songs together again. For all the alumni that attended the first Maryland Homecoming since Eta Chapter was Re-Chartered, it truly was "Fair Weather, Boys".

The Homecoming festivities began Friday evening when Eta Alumni from the 1950's through the 2000's joined together at the Oracle Lounge, at UMUC on the College Park campus. The entire Lounge was filled to capacity with Phi Sigs, except for one table of six, who, by the end of the evening, stated their wish to be initiated. In attendance were: Claude Bogley, Dave Swan, William "Whale" Niziolek, Ken Kelly, Michael "The B" Boulavsky, Dave Bourdon, Doug Bach, Steve Malloy, Mark McNutt, Dennis King and too many others to mention. Brothers reunited with their old classmates, met Brothers from other decades and, of

course, swapped and retold stories of Eta's history (tall tales not suitable for publication). Food, drink and brotherhood flowed through the evening until the staff was forced to close the Lounge.

After sleeping late on Saturday (thank goodness for late kickoff times), many Alumni arranged to meet up with Brothers of their decade for lunch at (continued on page 22)

2011 HOMECOMING REPORT (continued from page 20) Ledo's, a college football watch at Bentley's, or happy hour at the Cornerstone (formerly known as "the Vous"). But for the Eta Alumni Association Executive Board (Todd Hoffman, Peter DellaCroce, Joe Criscuoli, John Wright and Wayne Bethards) there is never a time to sleep or play.

They had work to do. Gathering early in the afternoon in the parking lot outside of Byrd Stadium, home of the Terrapins, they prepared for the main event: The Eta Chapter Homecoming Tailgate.

Erect the tents, place the carpet, set the tables and chairs, fill the coolers, start the sound system, serve the food and, finally, RAISE THE FLAG! Under the flying banner of PSK, over 100 Alumni gathered to celebrate their Alma Mater, their Fraternity and their Brotherhood. It truly was a wonderful gathering. As the sun set among the tables decorated with Silver and Red, brothers enjoyed succulent pulled pork barbecue. The undergraduate Brothers assisted in serving up other dinner items and cupcakes, decorated in Maryland colors; Red, White, Black and Gold. Alumni met the current Chapter members, made new Alumni acquaintances and renewed old friendships. The Phi Sig Tailgate grew until we blocked off the entire row...Eta Is Here To Stay. Our flag even attracted several actives from Upsilon Septaton Chapter of Clemson University, who had traveled up for the game.

The Eta Alumni in attendance reflected all decades: 1950s - Wayne Bethards, Jack Capants, Cal Hook; 1960s - Dr. Drury Bagwell (former Grand National President and current Chapter Recruitment Advisor), William Brewster, "Bones" Denvir, Mike Grieb, Bob Wagner, Frank O'Brien and about 30 others; 1970s - Jim Allen, Ed Becker, Claude Bogley, Steve "Sha-Na-Na" Cooper, Don Swan, Dave Crowley and many others; 1980s- Russ "Hollywood" O'Haver, Glenn Jaggard, Mike Albers, Nick Mirabile, Jim Charanis, Chris "Mayday" Malone, Eric "CPA extraordinaire to the Eta Alumni Association." Slowly the Brothers made it into Byrd Stadium to see the Terrapins play one of their best games of the year. Going toe-to-toe with the then-undefeated Clemson, matching them score for score, even leading into the fourth quarter, only to lose in the end. However, that did not end the Phi Sigs' night.

Brothers gathered together and, as they have always done, proceeded to Route 1 to close down, Town Hall, Bentley's and the "Vous" (now Cornerstone).

March forward to another year for your Alumni Association. As we head into our second year of providing for our Alumni, we need your support to continue to be able to provide to you quality publications and events. The terrific attendance speaks volumes of the strength of Brotherhood formed in Eta Chapter. It also demonstrates the level of support our Alumni have to each other and the Chapter. Alumni came from the metropolitan area and from out of state; including Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Texas.

Consider it a Challenge...

Several of our Members have asked if they could join together in a group gift to the “Six Columns” campaign in order to secure the naming rights to one of the 45 such opportunities we’ve established.

Naming rights can be a terrific way for any group, from two Brothers to a Pledge Class, to an entire decade, to establish a legacy in, or on, our new Chapter House. Consider making a challenge...like these: “I would like all of the past Presidents to join together in a group gift to the campaign with a goal of securing the naming rights to one of the columns.

The naming rights for one column are $20,000. There are 49 living past Presidents of Eta Chapter, 37 of which have joined the Alumni Association. If we all contribute, such will go a long way towards the goal of obtaining a home for our fraternity.”

They will say goodbye to Bill Lovett next Saturday after a one-week delay, because hundreds of mourners need more time to make it to Jersey. And somewhere above the place of his eternal rest, a marble stone will read “William Russell Lovett, 1946-2011.”

His friends and family may get a chuckle out of that — reducing an entire life to a hyphen?

Especially in this case: It feels especially inadequate to explain what that dash represents, and impossible to convey the achievement, the vitality, the compassion and the wisdom contained within those two sets of numbers that serve as the mileposts of Lovett’s life. You can read his resume, but that ignores the mortar between the bricks. You may know Bill Lovett was an NFL field judge for 18 years. Others may know he was a financial adviser at Langdon Ford in Parsippany for twice that long, and at one time he was arguably the best halfback in the history of the Maryland football program.

But since he lost his two-year fight with cancer July 31, we’ve come to realize that nothing on his C.V. can fully illustrate the effect he had on everyone he ever touched. Yes, he was a football man. But that is irrelevant to what made Lovett the person that others aspired to be.

“You know how most guys say, ‘I have a couple of really good friends.’ Bill has 100 best friends, and that’s just in the NFL,” said former referee Bill Carollo, Lovett’s crew chief. “It was the way he treated people. He was a guy of great humility, great humanity and great warmth. “He was always the first to say in our meetings with the referees’ union, ‘Let’s do something benefitting breast cancer research,’ or ‘Let’s do something at Walter Reed Hospital.’ Or just ‘Let’s do something to (continued on page 34) Winter 2011

So this is the day we pause to celebrate an ordinary guy from Cherry Hill who lived an extraordinary life. The kind of guy who can make you wonder why we would squander a single day, or waste a moment sweating the small stuff. The kind of guy who makes you acknowledge — without hesitation or embarrassment — that there are people who make you proud to be a New Jerseyan. And it has nothing to do with the fact that he was a public figure, with the kind of humor and character that enabled him to withstand a stadium-sized wave of rancor on Sunday afternoons. Listen to Mike Pereira, the former senior director of officiating for the NFL who is now an analyst with Fox: “I’m telling you that Bill Lovett was as good a deep official as we had in this league forever,” he said Friday. “I hired him to train officials (in 2007) because he was as close as you can get to being a complete official: Not only was he good at making a pass interference call, he understood coaches and understood players. Just like he understood life and how it should be lived.”

How it should be lived.

Without trying very hard, you can collect testimonies from here to Alpha Centauri, and you realize that everyone arrives at the same conclusion. Talk to the guy at the Rotary Club in Madison, where Lovett helped raise money for a Gift of Life program that provided surgeries for thousands of kids with congenital heart defects: “Bill was a huge part of this, the kind of person who could not stop giving of himself,” Larry Ripley, his fellow Rotarian, said.

“That’s where his energy came from: the fulfillment he received by helping others. I never knew him to say no to anybody, even if it wasn’t his project. And it was almost always kid-related.”

way,” Bob Conley, the VP of operations, said. “And the one thing he was most passionate about was the youth leadership award, when he’d speak very persuasively to kids about setting life goals. It’s a speech that the kids always said stay with them.”

Or talk to the lady at the Roots and Wings program in Mountain Lakes, which counsels aged-out foster youth: “Over the last five years, Bill mentored a young man from a difficult background who is now doing really well — in large part because of Bill,” program director Jenni Briggs said. “He was just the kind of person who made everyone feel great.”

They don’t talk about the time he worked the Giants -Ravens Super Bowl in Tampa, even though it was a conversation starter that Lovett never tired of. And they don’t repeat his stories, like the one Lovett loved to tell — about how his call cost Nebraska a bowl bid, and how the 73,000 people in the Sea of Red that had been issued Oranges at the gate “showed me those oranges up close as I left the field.”

His five kids, all achievers, can only guess the source of his altruism. Some think it came from Bill’s older brother, Chip, who passed away in 2009. It was Chip who helped Bill become an AllStater in football and track at Cherry Hill High School. “Dad felt an enormous amount of support (continued on Page 37)

Robert M. & Martha S. Wright

Eta Class of 1944

On October 20, 2011, Martha (“Marty”) Wright, widow of Eta Alum Robert M. (“Bob”) Wright, passed away at age 82. At age 88, Bob had predeceased her almost to the day two years prior. Their legacy of service to others will long endure in the memory of those privileged to have known them.

A friend and close associate of Marty’s in the Annapolis Opera remembered her as “a gracious and intelligent woman who was beautiful forever. You could look at her and think she was an opera star.”

Born in Denver, there Marty appeared in USO shows with film stars Fred McMurray and John Payne. During WWII, she moved east with her mother and worked as a fashion model and fashion illustrator in New York and Washington. She met Bob in 1947 and they married a year later. In 1962, the Wright’s moved to the Bay Ridge area of Annapolis, and Marty became active in the performing arts. She was the primary moving force in forming the Annapolis Opera, was a founder of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, a children’s theater group called the Tom Thumb Players, and the Annapolis Summer Garden Theater.

Marty’s calling to the ministry led her to become pastor of Woodland Beach Community Church for 10 years, and thereafter was active with a church in Epping Forest. It was said that “She touched many lives.” At a “Phi Sigs of the Fifties” Reunion I organized some years ago, Marty gave the invocation.

Bob was born in 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska. Later moving to the Washington, D.C. area, he graduated from McKinley Technical School, then attended the University of Maryland and the University of Cincinnati, studying Mechanical, Chemical and Aeronautical Engineering.

During World War II, Bob was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and flew the Lockheed P-38 “Lightning” with the 13th Air Force. His combat performance earned him the Bronze Star and numerous service medals in New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, Western Pacific, Southern Philippines, Luzon, China Offensive, and Borneo battles and campaigns.

I first met Bob when I was rushing Phi Sig in the fall of 1950, and found him to be most active and supportive of Eta Chapter. I subsequently learned that he was the primary force in the resurrecting of Eta Chapter after the War and the securing of a new fraternity house to replace the one on Dartmouth Avenue that was vacated when the Chapter was closed and the Phi Sigs marched off to war.

Bob’s service to Eta Chapter was not yet done, however. When Eta Chapter moved from College Avenue to its brand new house at #7 Fraternity Row in 1954, we moved in with all new furniture. It was, once, again, Bob Wright who was the lead force in raising funds for this notable accomplishment.

I will always remember Bob as a handsome, poised and articulate guy who, with his wife Marty, sought to make a positive difference in the lives of others, with a uniquely favorable tilt toward Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. Those Brothers who knew him personally and those who follow him in the years and decades ahead are the unique beneficiaries of the legacy of Bob and Marty Wright. Our lives have been enhanced as has the membership roster of Chapter Eternal.

Paul E. Harris

Eta Class of 1960

Paul E. Harris passed away on June 13, 2011, at the age of 74, following a courageous battle with cancer. The son of Ethel and Dwight Harris, Paul was born in Washington, DC, but lived and grew up in Takoma Park, MD, beginning in 1945. In his early 30's Paul moved to Old Town Alexandria, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He loved living near DC and always enjoyed the museums and was a strong advocate for the arts.

Following graduation from Montgomery Blair High School, Paul attended the University of Maryland at College Park, where he was an active and loyal member of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1960 and a Masters of Art in Public Administration in 1970. After serving in the United States Air Force, Mr. Harris spent the majority of his professional career working for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Paul was an active supporter of Eta alumni activities over the years. He was a member of the group that organized reunions for the Eta alumni of the 1950's and 1960's that were held in Columbia, Maryland, in 2002 and 2004. He regularly attended Eta alumni activities over the years, including the last reunion of the brothers of the 1950's and 1960's in Ocean City, Maryland, in 2007 where the photo on this page was taken. Paul was a proud donor to the "Phi Sig Gate" recognizing the contributions of members to the building of the Riggs Alumni Center on the College Park campus.

He is survived by his loving sister-in-law, Clare Aiello Harris (wife of deceased brother, Wilbur Hayes Harris) and devoted nieces and nephews: Cynthia Harris Edgar (Chatham, NJ), Brian J. Harris (Crownsville, MD), Anne Harris Kirstukas (Timonium, MD), and Douglas M. Harris (Kennett Square, PA), and their respective families.

A visitation was held on June 20, 2011, at the Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA, during which the life of Paul Harris was celebrated by family and friends.

The Celebration of Life program included this tribute to Paul.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

William R. Lovett (continued from page 34) from my uncle, who worked with him all the time,” Brian Lovett, Bill’s eldest son, explained. “From this, he learned you don’t have to do things on a grand scale. You can take care of one person at a time.”

His eldest daughter, Maria Lovett, said her dad loved the starfish parable. You’ve heard it before: A little girl finds thousands of starfish washed up on a beach, throws one back, and is mocked by a passerby who says, “What are you doing? You can’t begin to make a difference.” And the little girl picks up another, throws it back in the ocean and replies, “I made a difference to that one.”

“He and my mom taught us that we’re obligated to help others, but you always wondered how he did it as he worked two jobs, basically,” said Keith Lovett, who worked with his dad at Langdon Ford. “But this is what he was.

He left his mark on everybody.

And he never left anything unfinished.”

It was unfinished business that brought Bill Lovett to Dallas on July 15, two weeks before he died. The NFL refs convened for their annual meeting, and Brian admitted that he feared his father could fall and hurt himself as he met with his peers and trainees for the last time. Bill replied, “Brian, if I fall, I guarantee you there will be 120 guys who would come to pick me up.” So in a weakened state, Bill Lovett went to Dallas, accom-



panied by his eldest son, to say goodbye. On the first day, his son wheeled him into the DFW Airport Marriott, “and it took an hour just to get across the lobby, he had to be hugged by every guy there,” Brian said.

On the second day, he was invited to speak at a meeting of the union members he had once led. The other men stood and applauded as Lovett entered the room — this time on his feet, supporting himself with a cane. Brian Lovett welled up, witness to perhaps the most moving chapter in a life well lived. There were only two things preventing him from enjoying it fully. He thought about how he wished the entire family could have seen the affection and respect Bill Lovett’s peers expressed. Second, Brian said with a slight chuckle, “This was a very special thing for a son to see, and I didn’t hide it very well.”

Before Bill Lovett could make it to the door — which inspired another standing ovation — Mike Pereira had a final private moment with his old friend, leaning over him and kissing him on the cheek. “I told him very few people leave a true legacy,” Pereira said. “We like to say they do, but they really do not. Bill’s legacy will last as long as we remember his name. He truly had a life that represented the kind we all need to think about living.”



A Final Thought...

As this issue of The THIRD DEGREE comes to a close, I want to leave you with a few thoughts to reflect upon at this time of year.

With thoughts of fall come the planning and preparations that go into the next several weeks – weeks that are filled with activities, events, gatherings and still more preparations. It is a time of year when folks take some time to reflect on their lives and accomplishments while also looking to future plans and goals.

This is also a time filled with thoughts of family…memories of holidays past when, as a child, certain traditions are forever made a part of the days and weeks that lie ahead. Along with these memories comes a desire to pass on these traditions to our children and to sometimes share them with close friends whom we have developed along our way.

These traditions are a part of the legacy we will leave behind one day – secure in the knowledge that certain time-honored events will continue long after we are gone.

As you finish your review of this issue I ask that you also take a few moments to reflect upon thoughts of our brotherhood. For, if you are reading this magazine, you are part of an exclusive group that had the good fortune and unique opportunity to learn and to grow together during an important time of our lives.

If you pause a moment to think about the person you are today and how you have grown and developed as an individual since your time in college, then I trust that you are like me – grateful to have had the experiences that our fraternity gave us at a critical point in our lives.

As a parent of an active member of the Eta Chapter, I want to afford my son, and all the active members of our chapter, the same opportunities and experiences as I enjoyed. This is the primary reason I joined our alumni association, agreed to serve as an officer, and even “dug deep” in order to make a contribution to our “Six Columns” fund.

The bonds of our brotherhood cross the boundaries of age, generations and cultural differences. In fact, it is our differences that stand as one of our key strengths. While the next generation brings with them their own unique experiences, I want to do all I can for our active members as they continue on their journey towards becoming members of the Third Degree.

THIRD DEGREE could very well be published three times a year by the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa if, and only if, the financial support is there to allow it. Barring the emergence of the support necessary, future editions may be limited to Sustaining Members only, the publication may be reduced to an all black and white document, or the publication may be available only as a digital document available for downloading from the internet.

Subscription rates for the USA: a minimum of $35.00 per year, of which only $30.00 is retained by your Alumni Association. Larger donations are eagerly sought. ‘Tis the Season to Give Yourself a Gift… ...a legacy of having helped to put the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa back onto Fraternity Row. As you know, your Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa has returned to the University of Maryland at College Park. Our letters are once again worn with pride on campus, The Eta Chapter continues to grow, and excel and compete for the top spot amongst fraternities at the University of Maryland.

What we need to compete for additional members is a chapter house where undergraduates, alumni, parents and prospective members can walk through “Six Columns” and experience the home of Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity.

Now is the time to do more than read about our legacy...it’s time to become a part of it. Only one question remains:
