Why Use Bullets Throughout This Issue?            

Using Bullets could create greater interest in our magazine Provides an “at-a-glance” view of the state of the association Enables undergrad members to meet article submission deadline Potential for increased number of members who open magazine Increased number of readers who actually read cover-to-cover Boosts questions from membership requesting clarification Fewer number of pages needed to communicate our message Decreased cost in printing Decreased happiness of printing company Decreased costs in mailing Decreased happiness of postal service Provides greater opportunities for a chuckle as we eliminate unnecessary words here and there.  Shortens the “Editor’s Desk” article and makes room for a teensy promo message  Damn Proud,

ETA CHAPTER NEWS News Briefs from the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland

From the President’s Desk

Peter Danis ‘17

Greetings Alumnus, Been out of the loop on what’s been happening with your Eta Chapter this past semester? Here’s a quick overview:  Elections were held and we installed in a new executive board. Myself as President, Hugo Caldwell as Vice President, Jared McKee as Secretary, Tyler Weiss as Treasurer, Tony Starego as Sentinel, and Perry Ganz as Inductor.  We initiated a class of thirteen virtuous new gentlemen. Welcome to brothers Schnitzer, McKeon, Garibaldi, Boyd, Cipolla, Segal, Kao, Eapen, Glabach, Berhane, White, Kraus, and Riese.  We established a program with Big Brother / Big Sister Association of D.C. and had six Eta brothers mentor at-risk children once a week at Bruce Monroe and McKinley Tech Elementary schools. It was a rewarding experience for all and we are already working to do the program again next year.  The Sisters of Sigma Kappa had a pipe burst just days before sorority recruitment so we offered them the use our house for a few days as a substitute. They greatly appreciated our help and even made us cookies as a token of their thanks.  We filed a lengthy appeal to the university seeking to end our social probation which was to last until the end of the semester. In a matter of days an agreement was made and the sanctions were lifted in late April.  We attended an “Away Weekend” in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in which we all brought dates. A fun time was had by all.  We created a committee dedicated to chapter house improvements, Eta B.I.T.C.H. (Brothers Improving the Chapter House) and have been working to try and get some renovations completed over the summer. At the moment nothing is finalized, but a brick patio is currently under discussion.

 We had more chapter expectations (programming requirements set by the school) completed and accepted by the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life than any other fraternity on campus. What the future holds:  We look forward to continuing the Big Brother program with even more involvement.  Next semester we will host our biggest and best Special Olympics Polar Plunge to date.  We are excited to see you all at the Annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate.  We will thoroughly enjoy not being on social probation. Damn proud of what we’ve done and where we’re going. Fraternally, Peter Danis ‘17 Eta Chapter President

New Eta Chapter Leadership for ‘16

The Latest News from “House Mom” Lindsey Templeton It is hard to believe that two years have passed since moving into #2 Fraternity Row and becoming the new ‘House Mom’ for the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland These have been two very eventful years to say the least - filled with family dinners, illegible white board messages, entertaining lunch conversations, laffy taffy jokes, porch study sessions, loud nights, lots of cookies, and significant chapter growth. While I officially graduated with my Master’s degree in Higher Education this May, I am happy to say that I won’t be leaving this place that has become home just yet. I will be pursuing my PhD in Higher Education here at the University of Maryland starting this fall. And I will be staying with Phi Sigma Kappa for the foreseeable future. Here’s to another year with the men of Eta!

Eta Alumni Association News

“A wonderful evening. I would not have missed this event for the world.” What can you say about the crown jewel of the Eta Alumni Association's Spring event? As always, Stupendous! Held on the last Saturday in April, in concert with the University's annual Open House, Maryland Day, the event drew alumni new and "not so new", as well as current actives. Alumni from as far away as Texas, North Carolina and Florida were in attendance. They enjoyed conversation about memories of the past with fellow alumni and about the current House and members with recent alumni from 2012 - 2016. A slideshow, featuring photos of 1976-77 Greek week and Homecoming, brought a smile and laugh to all (current undergrads tried to see if they could recognize the alumni present in the photos when they had hair and it was not gray). The Eta Alumni Association continued its “Rings and Pins Program” tradition. Founded by Bob Pemberton, the program presents new Chapter Presidents a PSK jeweled pin as well as an Eta Guard and presidential gavel. Peter Danis ‘17, elected Chapter President just the week before, was presented his jeweled pin, donated by Charles C. Broadrup ‘60. Two alumni from 2013, First Vice President (and past chapter president) Christopher Flood, andVictor Alonso, just installed on the Eta Alumni Association Executive Board as Treasurer, had the honor of presenting Peter with his jeweled pin and letter of inspiration from Brother Broadrup. With the good food, great drink and fabulous music from the past, the evening flew by. 8

Seeing and talking with Brothers and friends from far away whom you have not seen in some time is what Brotherhood is all about. The Alumni association and the events we sponsor is what allows such Brotherhood to continue and benefit us all. The great thing about the Grand Reunion, now, is seeing and meeting the new Alumni, who were part of the re-chartering and current Chapter, rekindling their ties with their fraternity brothers and interacting with the older Alumni, with their memories of life at #7 Fraternity Row. If you haven't been to a Eta Alumni Association Grand Reunion, plan now to attend next year. If you haven't been for a couple years, contact your associate (pledge) class and brothers and plan to have your entire chapter brotherhood there next year. If you have been to all the Grand Reunions, don't let the streak end now. The only thing better than socializing with your Brothers at the Grand Reunion is meeting them for the Eta Alumni Association Homecoming Tailgate, to be held this year on Saturday, October 1st at noon-3:00 p.m. Don't miss it. And then watch your mighty Terrapins take on Perdue, a 3:30 p.m. kickoff (may need a few boiler-makers before that game). The Alumni Association will be obtaining a block of tickets for Phi Sig's and their guests, email the Eta Alumni Association with your requests. - John J. B. Wright, Esq. ‘82

Clyde Taber Foothill Ranch, California Eta Class of 1984 B.S., Computer Science; MDV, Denver Seminary ‘92 Director, Visual Story Network, a faith-based non-profit . Married (Shirin) with three children: Clyde Ellis Taber V (we call him Quinn), Elena, and Sage. Joined Eta Alumni Association: 09/25/10 6-Year Member. Last Renewed: 08/11/15 Six Columns Donor: Brother Level

The THIRD DEGREE: What first compelled you to become a member of Phi Sigma Kappa? Clyde Taber: The first time I pledged was because Robert Russell O’Haver (if I remember his full name correctly) recruited Todd Lang and me while we all worked at Phillips Crab House in Ocean City the summer of 1980. I thought Russ was a stylin’ guy and the idea of a fraternity sounded like fun. I went through the whole pledge program but couldn't afford the bill for brotherhood fees that I got a Christmas break. I didn't join. Becuase I lived off campus my freshman year I felt very isolated. I knew that I had to find a place to fit in on such a large campus. For my sophomore year, I moved into the house and pledged a second time. Greg Young, a former fellow pledge, was now my Pledge Inductor! TTD: What was your most triumphant moment as an undergraduate at Phi Sig? Clyde Taber: The initiation ritual was meaningful and significant after all we had been through (especially after I pledged twice!). I thoroughly enjoyed the guys I went through it with. I was deeply touched when I was voted Brother of the Year in 1983. I had gone through a sometimes traumatic “faith-awakening” that included staff members from Campus Crusade speaking to the brotherhood, unusual spiritual encounters and a mugging (another Todd Lang connection) that required several surgeries to put my jaw back together. For me, it was a vote of affirmation in light of all I had been through. As it turns out, I spent 23 years on three continents serving with Campus Crusade as a campus minister. I felt very loved and supported after the mugging. Lots of guys came to visit at Leland Memorial for the week that I was there. I'll never forget Corky (Mark L. Coppola, ‘82) coming to see me all by himself. He was older than me and not a guy that I naturally connected with. It was obvious that he cared. I was proud to be able to help recruit several guys from my high school to join the Eta chapter (Dave Tilley ‘84, John Meadowcroft ‘84, and John Pflugrad ‘86). 10

TTD: What things did you learn as a member of Eta Chapter that have served you well in your life? Clyde Taber: Living in the house was my first encounter living with so many guys from different backgrounds. I began to learn how to allow for differences while focusing on common values. I actually learned how to clean… although I've never used a toothbrush to clean a floor since. At Phi Sig, I learned how to live out my faith authentically in a context of diversity. There were great lessons in leadership, especially as Pledge Inductor. TTD: What advice would you want to share with our current undergraduate members? Clyde Taber: You can change the world if you do these three things… 1. Figure out your calling. 2. Do it well. 3. Do it long. Decades long. You can hear Shirin and me teach 500 undergrads on this topic at www.visualstory.org/ciu2 (it includes a reference to hell week). TTD: Your favorite memories of Eta Chapter? Clyde Taber: Here are a few slices…  21 guys stacked like cordwood on 3 mattresses.  Arguing with Eric Vinson about who did more work to improve Room 207 (Greg Young ‘83 had to referee).  Pick-up hoops behind the house. Larry Kinsey ‘84 was the toughest slow guy I ever defended.  Hearing the herd of buffalo stampeding down the steps when “Dinner” was called (I was a bus boy my senior year).  The TV room erupting when two hands appeared at the bottom of the screen to drop in a missed shot giving NC State the national championship over Houston.  Dave Tilley chasing a giant palmetto roach in room 203 with a hammer (fail).  Greg Young making an art form out of...no, we won’t go there.

Alumni Notes

Are We Really Responsible for “The ‘Vous”? I have to tell you an important story about the naming of The VOUS.

In fall of 1964, Freshman pledge Cecil Given, and newly-activated Francis Nicholas "Bones" Denvir and Joe Midolo were tired of eating Howie's Subs or at the Hot Shoppes every Sunday when the campus dining hall was closed. One Sunday Bones had wandered into The Rendezvous Inn, had a sandwich and beer and, the next Sunday, he said let's all give it a try. So, we went in on Sunday about noon...one bartender, one blonde waitress named Terri with a beehive hairdo, and a couple of locals at the bar. We sat in a booth by the window, ordered roast beef sandwiches on white ($0.50) and short drafts ($0.15). I was 18, and Bones and Midolo were 19. Of course we had "fake" ID's and sipped our beers with big smiles, and chowed down on a fantastic 4" thick medium rare thinly sliced roast beef sandwich with chips! We then played some pinball, had a few more beers, got Terri calling each of us "Babe" and thought we had found a private heaven. The owner, Leo Cannon, was tending bar, and we shot the breeze with him, and I even think we met his partner, Sam, on that day. We went there nearly every Sunday for a number of weeks, and there was never more than 8-10

people there. We decided to go on a Thursday night with a few other brothers, instead of Town Hall or Varsity Grill, because there was no bouncer and it was a great place to eat, play pinball, pool, and drink on the cheap. They soon knew our first names, so we became bona fide regulars. We told everyone about "our find," The Rendezvous Inn, and a few more people started to go...mostly guys.

One afternoon in January of ’65, we were trying to decide where to have a beer, and Bones said, "Let's go to The Rendezvous Inn" One guy says, "Where??" And Bones said "Hey man, we're going to the Rendezvous Inn, you know, THE VOUS!, See you at the VOUS!!"...we laughed our asses off, and the rest is history. Bones was THE person to coin it. Everyone picked up on “The VOUS”, and it soon started to be the place to go. Lots of Phi Sigs, Phi Kaps, KA's, Phi Delts, Sigma Chi's, ATO's and SAM's were there in the beginning. We soon coerced a few women to come, and it didn't take long for Thursday night to become the busy night as no one had early classes on Fridays. Then, we went after Monday chapter meetings, and on Tuesday because it was a quiet night, and we could get some pinball or pool in. I don't believe I opened many books...actually, I

know I didn't. Leo, Sam and Terri were friendly, gracious, and always smiling. When the ABC boys were on the hunt, they moved south on Route 1, so Town Hall would call Leo, and he would calmly walk around and alert everyone, so those underage without ID's could leave. I don't remember many lines to get into The VOUS...maybe because being a regular was a privilege to bypass the line...can't remember...because when they did have a "doorman", we always knew him. Quite a few Phi Sigs tended bar there from 1965 on...Stofa, Casey, Arbutina and few more. We all knew Kenny Ambrusko too. I'm not sure if you knew how it got started as a college hangout, but thought I'd let you know. My facts might be off just slightly, but this is pretty close to how it all began. All thanks...to Bones. Go Terps, Damn Proud and Don't Forget The Vous, - Cecil A. Given III ‘68

Please accept my sincere thanks for all of your support during the last six years. I’ve had the unique opportunity to see the importance of a strong alumni association as a new initiate, a chapter president, a member of the third degree, and now as one of your volunteer officers. The membership numbers that we have achieved have allowed us to build the best and most active Alumni Association Phi Sig has ever seen! Renewals have already started to roll in for “Year 7” - I hope you have, or will soon, renew your membership for this very important year. Your Executive Committee is “all in on lucky number 7”, but everyone wants to know if it will pay out with 400 members? If you have not already done so, please use the personalized renewal document that was inserted into this magazine and renew today! For your convenience, you can always renew online when you surf over to http://alumni.psk-eta.com/join/ ! As you have read in this issue, the Grand Reunion provided a unique opportunity for great intergenerational bonding and memories. It was great to see so many brothers at this event, and I hope to see even greater numbers at our next major gathering. If you have a few moments to re-connect with your Brothers, I could really use some help making calls and sending e-mails to those of us who have not joined, not renewed, and/or are currently part of our “Lost” list. Drop me a line at alumni@psk-eta.com to volunteer just a couple of hours of your time. I will really appreciate it. Homecoming is on October 1st! How do you top last year’s brick oven pizza? Help us to reach 400 members by Homecoming and come find out for yourself - remember that the alumni tailgate is FREE for paid members and family & friends. Damn Proud!

A: Our hope is that alumni will review the list and send us a name or two of qualified young men from their local area who are headed to, or are returning to, College Park this fall. These names will be sent to the Membership Recruitment Chairman for pursuit. In this way our alumni can assist in the growth of the chapter and, ultimately, the growth of our own alumni association.

Eta Class of 1944

May 4, 1922 - December 4, 2013 John Ellicott Watson, 89, beloved husband, companion and friend of Jane Chapin Watson for 69 years and dearly loved by family and friends, died on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. He died peacefully, with his family at his side, of respiratory failure due to complications from a stroke. John and his twin sister Priscilla were born on May 4, 1922, in the Dominican Republic, where their father was stationed as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He spent his childhood in Spain, Nicaragua, Washington, D.C. and various other military posts as his father rose in rank to lieutenant general. John graduated from Charlotte Hall Military Academy in 1940 and entered the University of Maryland to study chemical engineering. He became president of his fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1941, shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. On Sept. 16, 1944, he married Jane Chapin before being deployed to Okinawa, Saipan and Tsing Tao, China. Returning home in 1946, John and Jane moved to Corning, N.Y., where he worked for the Corning Glass Company. He resumed his education at Cornell University, graduating with a master’s degree in chemical engineering. John went to work for E.I. DuPont de Nemours, Inc. in Linden, N.J., and the family settled in Fanwood. As their three children grew, John became active in Boy Scouts, serving for many years as scoutmaster of Troop 104 which had over 100 scouts. He also served on the vestry and sang in the choir at Grace Episcopal Church. In 1965, DuPont transferred John to Seaford, where he worked in plant management for the next 15 years. He developed a great love for the community and became involved in many activities. He served on the vestry, became treasurer, and sang in the choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. In 1970, he joined with other volunteers at the church to start the Seaford Federal Credit Union to benefit under -served members of the community. After retiring from DuPont in 1980 at age 58, John went to work as manager of the credit union, taking great pride and satisfaction in its development and success. He later became CEO and in 2010 was named Credit Union Professional of the Year by the Delaware Credit Union League. After 33 years he retired from this second career in June, 2013. John also served as executive director and treasurer of the Greater Seaford Chamber of Commerce, and in 2002 they honored him as their Business Person of the Year. He was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 381, sat on the board of directors of the Seaford Golf and Country Club and the Nanticoke Senior Center, was treasurer of the Seaford Historical Society, and volunteered for the Seaford Library as endowment committee chairman. Henry August Lins

Eta Class of 1964

April 1, 1942 – April 26, 2016 Henry “Hank” August Lins, age 74, of Cumming, GA passed away on April 26, 2016. He is preceded in death by his mother Betty Smith, father Henry and stepmother Martha Lins and brother Jimmy Smith. Hank is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Molly Lins of Cumming, daughter and son in law Michelle and Tommy Miller of Cumming, daughter Tricia Fenske of Cumming, brother and sister in law Bill and Bonnie Lins of Marietta, brother and sister in law Bob and Suzy Lins of Cumming and brother and sister in law David and Vicki Smith of Groton, CT, grandchildren Merritt and Henry Miller, Savannah and Braxton Fenske and Christopher, Matthew, Jenny and Brittany Lins, and lastly his Havanese dog “Ryan” who has remained by his side for the last 18 months. Hank was a stockbroker for 47 years and worked up until the day of his death, just as he promised. He loved his job and let everyone know it. In addition to getting inducted to the Verona High School Sports Hall of Fame for soccer he also earned a soccer scholarship to the University of Maryland. Hank was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the South Forsyth Rotary Club, a 29-year member of the Polo Golf and Country Club, and he loved golf, boating, the ocean, his grandkids and any event not scheduled in the early morning.

When we were Hank’s fraternity brothers at Maryland we knew him as a force of nature. He lit up a room with his presence and personality. Hank was an extravert who genuinely loved people. He was outgoing, but approachable, concerned for others and most of all possessed a top notch sense of humor. While battling a serious illness, Hank and Molly traveled from outside Atlanta to College Park for the Reunion on October 2. From the moment we saw him all the years melted away. He looked great, had the same energy, personality, laugh and contagious smile. Hank regaled us with his stories and helped make the Reunion such a success. Henry A. Lins........ ven though we committed to an “all-bullets” issue, we just can’t seem to give up on having at least one item starting off with an elegant “Drop Cap” - some habits, especially those developed over the past six years and eleven issues, are just too tough to break, and too painful to leave behind. Okay, now back to the bullets:

 We know we should not harp on this, but it would be really nifty - we  

mean really nifty - if we could reach 400 members by Homecoming this year - our 7th Year Membership is so inexpensive - we can’t imagine why more Brothers don’t jump on the chance to be with us - sometimes it makes us sad But we are so very grateful to the Brothers who donate far above the minimum - because your dues donations make it possible for us to do things that leave people scratching their heads (you know who you are) Reaching our goal would set a new record for our association, for Phi Sig, and probably the Greek System at the University of Maryland We think we can get there - especially if everyone who was a member last year renews for this year - our 7th Year We think we can get there - especially if a few of you, who have let your membership lapse over the past couple of years, would come back into the fold for this year - our 7th Year We think we can get there - especially if just a few Brothers would volunteer to help us to find our 162 “Lost” Brothers - and maybe invite them to join our association for this year - our 7th Year We think we can get there - especially if a few of you will step forward and encourage one or more of the 492 Brothers who were not members last year to join us for this year - our 7th Year We think we can get there - because we believe that our 7th Year is our lucky year - and that we’ll be lucky enough to hear from you about how important your fraternity is to you, how you want to help our association to grow, and that we’ll have the chance to see you at one or more of our social events Damn Proud to serve you this year - our 7th Year,

named “Alumni Association of the Year” by our Grand Chapter. For the 6th Year in a row, the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa failed to reach its goal of 400 paid members. Now we have reached our 7th Year of Operations, and this MUST BE THE YEAR we reach that goal. But only if you are on board. Only if you are on board. Only if you renew, recruit, and gift our way to that lofty goal - that shining achievement. Will you help? Will you make a commitment? Will you be a part of the “Lucky 7th Year”? Will you do these things in memory of #7 Fraternity Row? ...Or will our hearts be broken yet again.
