THIRD DEGREE The Journal of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland
Santa didn’t put us back on The return of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa to the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park was, in no small part, due to the sacrifices of time, treasure and talent by a dedicated group of alumni. Our chapter house stands as an example of the “Castles on the Row” that our alma mater wants all along that coveted address. And the Eta Chapter house is a place where undergraduates, alumni, parents and prospective members can walk through “Six Columns” and experience the home of Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity.
Before the year comes to a close, please consider a generous gift to “Six Columns” campaign. Do more than read about our legacy...become a part of it. Donate Today to the Six Columns Campaign http://sixcolumns.umd.edu
* Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation Inc., an affiliated 501c(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents. Gifts are tax deductible as allowed by law. Please consult your tax advisor.

Happy Holidays...from the other Force.
I
t has been brought to my attention that a new Star Wars movie has been released and is doing well at the box office. That is perhaps the Understatement of the Year, right? Multiple generations of fans are flocking to movie theaters to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Many of these fans celebrate the return of the Jedi to the big screen dressed in costumes - a level of praise not seen since the College Park Theater was showing the “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
Now, I’m not suggesting that you, say, dress in a toga or even don your fraternity tie in order to read this issue - but - well, this is a fairly special issue. It’s our tenth. Ten. As in the one after nine. And just as Star Wars now commands the attention of humans from several decades, many generations of members of Phi Sigma Kappa will be reading the (68, can you believe it?) pages that have been put together as our, um, “newsletter”. I’m hopeful this issue will awaken you to the state of our chapter and of our alumni association. We need you now more than ever before. And we need more of you more than ever before. So, without further ado or sneak-peek trailers or appearances on the Today show, we humbly submit for your review and consideration this tenth issue of “The THIRD DEGREE”. May the Fraternal Force that resides in all of you be awakened by this issue, may you rekindle your interest in things of days gone by, and may you and yours have a Very Happy Holiday Season. Help Our Chapter Grow Eta Alumni can help to build our Chapter by keeping their eyes and ears open for students headed to, or heading back to, College Park each and every semester. Supplying our active chapter with the names of potential members, and/or giving information about membership in Phi Sigma Kappa to someone whom you feel could be a potential member, especially legacies, is a terrific way in which alumni can help to build our active chapter - and ultimately help to build our future alumni association. Please let us know if we can send any information about Phi Sigma Kappa to potential members as they make their way, or way back, to College Park - or let us know about outstanding young men who our chapter should contact about membership by writing to Alumni@PSK-Eta.com Damn Proud!!

ETA CHAPTER NEWS News Briefs from the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland
From the President’s Desk
Danny Mackey ‘15
Alumni, I’m enthused by the opportunity to address the distinguished group of men that have graduated from the University of Maryland as members of Phi Sigma Kappa’s Eta Chapter and eager to bring you up to speed regarding the current state of our fraternity. In the spirit of remaining honest, the Fall 2015 semester has been one of trial and change for the chapter. An incident in the beginning of the semester lead to the expulsion of six brothers, the suspension and sanctioning of several others, as well as sanctions being placed against the chapter as a whole. Rather than focus on the circumstances that lead up to what happened and the events that transpired, I’d like to focus on the present and future. It is no stretch to state that our chapter is better and stronger after what happened than we ever have been during my three years as a brother. A newly appointed executive board has been working diligently to move the chapter forward along with strong support from engaged members of the fraternity who recognize our situation as an opportunity to reconnect with our cardinal principles, improve our fraternal bond, and guarantee a strong future for generations of Eta members to come. We’ve had several successful events this semester. Delta Gamma co-hosted our large annual event, the Polar Bear Plunge. Brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa, sisters of Delta Gamma, and even our Resident Director Lindsey Templeton took the plunge into 32 degree water to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland. The event is developing into a strong yearly tradition that will continue for years to come - this year the event raised over $4,000, all of which went to Special Olympics. The Polar Bear Plunge is just one way brothers have stayed connected with our national philanthropy and local community. The first Sunday of December, twelve brothers, including Vice President Nate 4

Rogers and myself, volunteered at Special Olympics Maryland’s State 10 Pin Bowling Competition. Seeing brothers interact with athletes was a highlight of the semester – I know that the athletes were truly appreciative and our brothers enjoyed helping to run the event. The coordinators of the competition were impressed by our dedication to helping the community and I was impressed by the kindheartedness displayed by each and every athlete and volunteer. I hope this is an event in which brothers will continue to participate in future years. Taking a step back from social activities has allowed for more opportunities to develop brotherhood, scholarship, and character. A large number of brothers helped to clean up a community park, willingly setting aside a large portion of their Saturday to benefit their local community. The following Sunday a group of us travelled to the Appalachian Trail and hiked to Annapolis Rocks, one of the most scenic overlooks in the state. Both events helped to forge bonds of brotherhood and bring together brothers from different associate classes. Normal chapter operations have resumed on top of the large amount of community service we have been performing. We took a new associate class of five brothers this semester. Welcome to brothers Hodge, Culleton, Wagner, Lupo, and Labib. We are excited to have new members of our brotherhood and are confident they are motivated by our Cardinal Principles. Looking into the future, we hope to use the coming semester to remain focused on developing brotherhood and helping our local community, and to revitalize our recruitment process, driving it toward a more values-based system. While my executive board and I will be vacating our positions in midMarch, we wish to recruit a class of gentlemen who truly live by the Creed, and to motivate our current brothers to do the same.
The road ahead for Eta has no shortage of obstacles, but I am confident in our abilities to solidify a standing legacy on campus as a group of true gentlemen who do the right thing and live by their principles of brotherhood, scholarship, and character. To this end I dedicate My Life to the maintenance of this Faith and the pursuit of this Purpose so that the ideals of Phi Sigma Kappa, being embodied in me, may be fulfilled in my Character and Conduct, and be known and honored by all men. By these things I stand. Thank you,

Eta Chapter News - New Executive Officer Profiles Daniel Mackey, President Danny is a senior Civil Engineering major. He is proficient in Spanish. He is from Columbia, Maryland where he earned his Eagle Scout Award. He was also one of two College Park Scholars Program undergraduates to receive the Outstanding Citizenship's Award. Danny has set some high goals for his tenure. He wants to continue the PSK Gentleman program that was started under the prior Executive Board. The two-fold program aimed to brand members of the fraternity to the outside community as respectable, well rounded individuals as well as to motivate members within the fraternity to live the Phi Sigma Kappa Creed and better align themselves with our cardinal principles. He also states; "I believe that strong alumni and chapter advisor involvement plays a crucial role in a successful fraternity. I want to lead this chapter to work closely with alumni to further align the fraternity with our cardinal principles as well as move the fraternity forward.
Nathaniel Rogers, Vice-President Nate Rogers is a senior Mechanical Engineering major. He is from Silver Spring, Maryland where he also earned his Eagle Scout Award. While assisting his President with the Chapter, Nate wants to see the Chapter hold each Brother to a higher standard and give more thought into living out the cardinal principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Character. He believes that events or actions to improve the friendship and relationship between the advisors/ alumni can help benefit the Chapter. A successful chapter should have a clear and good friendship with the alumni because we are all looking out for the best of the organization and members of the fraternity to which we both belong.
Michael Barnette, Treasurer Michael is from Gaithersburg, Maryland and is a senior Accounting and Finance major. He has interned for both the Federal Housing Finance Agency Washington, D.C. Office of Budget and Financial Management and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Michael states; "A monumental aspect that stands out, other than the three cardinal principles, is accountability. I feel passionately about the importance of upholding chapter standards," 6

DAMN PROUD! Mitchell Parrish, Secretary Mitch is a Kinesiology major. He is from Ellicott City, Maryland where he earned his Eagle Scout Award. He is planning on pursuing a Master's of Science in Athletic Training upon graduation. He views alumni and chapter advisors as key members of any successful fraternity. They are also our way of communicating with the Grand Chapter. Alumni can have a major role in helping an Executive Board maintain standards for a Chapter’s members.
Steven Lopez, Sentinel Steve is a Kinesiology major and expects to graduate in May 2016. He is from Forest Hill, Maryland and has held many Chapter offices in the past . This Summer and Fall he worked with the Football team as a student manager. Steve wants to see Eta Chapter develop future leaders in order to prepare them for the real world. With the implementation of optional workshops for leadership and character development, along with etiquette and business techniques, we can help turn Phi Sigma Kappa into a leader for all of Greek life and the post-graduate world. The alumni have connections, experience, and knowledge that are extremely valuable to the chapter and should be included and aware of all chapter activities and happenings on a consistent and timely basis. Along with the bylaws, contact with the alumni will help us retain honor and respect in our community.
Zachary Portnoff, Inductor Zach is a Computer Science senior from Ellicott City, Maryland. He interned this year with Booz Allen Hamilton. Zack thinks that the whole point of the association process is to welcome new members-to-be to our fraternity. “I hope to bring about this culture change by organizing events with the associates where they can spend time and get to know the brothers and actually enjoy the association process. He strongly believes that hazing is counter productive and has no place in our society. He would also welcome input from alumni how to make the association process, enjoyable, educational and truly non-hazing. He looks to see how such ideas could lead to incorporating different activities into future association programs. December 2015

Eta Chapter News - New Chapter Advisor
Mentorship and Fraternity By Jay Gobeil ‘12 Eta Chapter Advisor
M
y fraternity experience was incredible, and helped shape me beyond my years at Maryland. Through Phi Sigma Kappa, my horizons were broadened, my professional network strengthened, and my social experience enriched. My fraternity experience also challenged me, and placed me into circumstances for which I was not always ready, or experienced enough to handle alone. In these situations, I relied heavily on the valuable mentorship of my alumni advisors, and volunteers. When I hit a wall, my network of advisors offered advice, guidance, and their honest feedback based upon their own personal experiences. This guidance greatly enriched my college experience, and allowed me to learn more than I ever thought possible.
I
n addition to connecting alumni members throughout the decades, the Eta Alumni Association is in a unique position to assist the undergraduate chapter at Maryland. Our Alumni Association is huge...a testament to the hard work of our Executive Committee - and has a diverse membership with unique stories, and equally
unique life experiences, all of which can be of benefit to the active members of the Eta Chapter. Influential alumni members helped enrich my collegiate experience by investing in me, and I would like to challenge our alumni to invest in the current embers of our chapter in whatever meaningful capacity they can. Whether it’s offering to edit a resume, assisting with career development, or even volunteering as a chapter advisor, there are many different ways to get involved once again with Phi Sigma Kappa.
I
f you are an alumni member, and have any interest in mentoring the current undergraduate chapter in any way, please feel free to reach out to me at jgobeil@gmail.com. The active chapter seeks to involve more of our dedicated alumni members in maintaining a strong active chapter at the University of Maryland! DAMN PROUD!

SPECIAL FOCUS: Chapter Expectations UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND CHAPTER EXPECTATIONS The positive experience of being a member of a Greek-letter organization is sustained through the management of a successful chapter. The experience should reflect an obvious commitment to fraternal principles and should be compatible with the goals and objectives of the University. The Chapter Expectations Resource Guide has been designed to assist chapters in preparation for the fulfillment of these expectations. The Guide includes a checklist for all expectations, deadlines for when chapters must submit proof of compliance, an inclusive summary of each expectation, as well as examples of programs. PAPERWORK REQUIREMENTS Chapters must fulfill four (4) of the five (5) paperwork requirements to be placed in the “meets expectations” category. Chapters with a residential component and facility must also fulfill paperwork requirements 6 and 7 to achieve meets expectations. 1. CHAPTER ADVISOR An active, involved chapter advisor is a key ingredient to a successful chapter. Each chapter shall have a chapter advisor who either lives or works within the immediate metropolitan area, and who has the support of the inter/national organization. The advisor shall be an alumnus/a of the fraternity or sorority (unless a specific exception is granted by DFSL in conjunction with the inter/ national organization), should have some form of active fraternity/sorority experience, and shall provide the chapter and its membership with continuing advice and support. The Chapter Advisor contact information must be submitted through OrgSync. 2. OFFICER LIST In order for DFSL to serve as a resource for all officers, it is necessary that an updated officer list is submitted via OrgSync each semester. 3. MID-YEAR REPORT This document serves as the chapter’s summary report for their progress on meeting expectations through the Fall semester. The MidYear Report is due by the last day of class in the Fall Semester. 4. ANNUAL REPORT This document serves as the chapter’s summary report for their progress in meeting the expectations over the course of the year. This is a summary report of how the chapter met their goals in addition to serving as a reflection tool about these goals. With permission, chapters may substitute documents that they send as a summary report to their headquarters if that report covers items required in the annual report. Chapters should include the number of community service hours performed by all members, total amount of money raised for all philanthropic activities, and the membership involvement survey. Annual Reports are due by the last day of class in the Spring Semester. 5. SEMESTERLY MEMBERSHIP ROSTERS Each chapter must be a registered student organization and maintain an active membership roster on file through the OrgSync online process and DFSL at all times. To do this, rosters must be submitted according to the following schedule: September 1st – Active member

Eta Alumni have often asked, “What is the active chapter up to?” - well, here’s just a bit about their current activities... roster submitted to OrgSync and DFSL New Member rosters submitted to OrgSync and DFSL within two weeks of bids being offered during the fall semester. December 1st – Active member roster updated in OrgSync and DFSL to reflect full membership February 1st – Active member roster updated in OrgSync and DFSL. New Member rosters submitted to OrgSync and DFSL within two weeks of bids being offered during the spring semester. May 1st – Active member roster updated in OrgSync and DFSL to reflect full membership. Chapters with Residential Programs and Facilities: 6. HOUSE DIRECTOR/RESIDENT DIRECTOR All fraternities and sororities with a residential component of fifteen (15) or more occupants must employ a live-in House Director (HD) or Resident Director (RD) at all times the house is occupied under the coordination and approval of the House Corporation and the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life. The purpose of the HD/RD is to oversee the facility management and associated operations and to establish a liaison among the chapter, House Corporation, and University. A House Director is an individual hired and supervised by the house corporation; a Resident Director is a graduate student hired and supervised by the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life. More detailed expectations and a full position description for each position can be obtained through the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life. HD/RD contact information must be submitted through OrgSync. 7. HOUSE CORPORATION An active and involved house corporation board is an important component for the effective operation of the chapter house. This house corporation entity can manage the affairs of the property and serve as an indispensable resource for the chapter members who have limited time and ability to worry about the long-term maintenance needs of the structure. The University requires each chapter that is housed – and encourages those chapters not currently housed but seeking housing – to have an active and involved house corporation entity. DFSL will assist chapters in identifying prospective board members December 2015
The THIRD DEGREE 11
SPECIAL FOCUS: Chapter Expectations (cont.) and will host periodic meetings for representatives from all corporation boards. Articles of Incorporation will be required for all house corporation boards and should be submitted to the DFSL Housing Coordinator. The House Corporation Board contact information must be submitted through OrgSync. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS The development of individual members is a primary goal of Greekletter organizations. Providing opportunities for members to attain their academic goals, experience new opportunities, connect with the communities of which they are a part, and realize their individual potential are important initiatives for chapters. The goal of these programs is twofold: first, to enhance the experience of the members in each chapter; and second, to improve the image of fraternities and sororities on campus and in the local community. Ideally, chapters will either sponsor or co-sponsor each program. In general, cosponsorship means helping to plan and implement a program; it must be more than just financially contributing to the program. Programs that are hosted by outside groups may also be used to fulfill these requirements on a case by case basis with approval from the respective DFSL advisor. Program Event Evaluation forms should be completed and submitted online for each program. In general, programs will be evaluated on a case by case basis. In order to make the programs meaningful, a significant number of members should attend each program. Although a minimum percentage is not required, it is recommended that at least 50% of the chapter attend each program or at least 50% of the members participate in a program in a specific category over the course of the year. Many chapters already have programming requirements from their inter/national organization or from their respective governing council. To assist chapters in accomplishing these requirements, the University will be flexible in allowing inter/national programming assignments or governing council programming requirements to meet the criteria for University programming requirements. Before the program occurs, the chapter should request to the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff to have their unique programming requirements substituted for the programs mentioned in the standards below. Chapters must fulfill eight (8) of the twelve (12) programming requirements. Four (4) of these programs are required: 1. ALCOHOL/DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAM A persistent challenge facing college students across the country is their misuse and abuse of alcohol and drugs. Research often shows fraternity and sorority members experience high rates of binge drinking and the associated negative consequences. To help educate members about the effects related to alcohol and drug use, chapters are required to host a program each year addressing this topic. 2. HAZING PREVENTION PROGRAM The new member education or intake process sets the foundation for the fraternity or sorority experience. Therefore, it is important for chapters to bring new members into their organization in an intentional way. To help ensure a positive and safe new member process that excludes hazing practices, chapters are required to host a program each year that addresses hazing prevention. 3. MULTICULTURAL COMPETENCY PROGRAM This program should enhance the chapter’s knowledge, awareness, or skills and stretch members to consider different perspectives and experiences around areas such as race, religion, ability, sexual orientation, etc. The richness of the fraternity and sorority experience is enhanced by chapters’ abilities to engage with the diversity of the University of Maryland community in meaningful ways. Chapters are 12
December 2015
The THIRD DEGREE
required to host a program each year that addresses this topic. 4. SEXUAL ASSAULT / VIOLENCE PREVENTION & AWARENESS PROGRAM Sexual assault and relationship violence are significant problems in the community and on college campuses across the country. Given the founding values of fraternities and sororities, each chapter should commit to raising awareness about these issues. Each chapter must demonstrate its commitment to this effort by participating in a sexual assault prevention or relationship violence program each year. Chapters must also fulfill four (4) more programs from the list of eight (8) options below in order to be placed in the “meets expectations” category: 5. ACADEMIC PROGRAM Scholarship is the primary reason students attend college and is another cornerstone value of our fraternal organizations. With the high caliber of students at the University of Maryland, the pursuit of academic achievement is a key value. Fraternal organizations should demonstrate this value by assisting members with their performance and promoting a culture of scholarship within their organizations. Each chapter should participate in an academically related educational program each year that meets the needs of their membership. The University provides a wide variety of services and resources to enhance academic performance. 6. ALUMNI PROGRAM Alumni represent a critical component of chapter operations and help ensure the health and longevity of a chapter. Alumni programming gives chapters the opportunity to connect with these important people in meaningful ways. Chapters are encouraged to sponsor at least one program or outreach effort to alumni each year. 7. COMMUNITY SERVICE/SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS The act of serving others is one of the cornerstones of fraternities and sororities. Therefore, chapters are expected to create opportunities for each of their members to engage in three hours of service. In order to fulfill this category, the chapter should submit a total number of service hours that equals three times the chapter’s membership. Chapters that go above this minimum will be eligible for the “exceeds expectations” category. It should be noted that community service is defined here as direct, hands on service as opposed to philanthropy/ fundraising, which is not considered a fulfillment of this expectation. 8. FACULTY/STAFF OUTREACH PROGRAM The University of Maryland is rich with resources in the form of faculty, staff, and other community members whose presence significantly enhances the student experience. This expectation provides chapters with the opportunity to tap into these resources and create a program for their membership that allows for meaningful interactions with these people. 9. NON-GREEK PROGRAM Each chapter should co-sponsor a program each year with a nonGreek campus organization. Programs can be educational, cultural, philanthropic, or social (non-alcoholic) in nature and can be combined with other programming or service requirements in this document. This expectation gives chapters the chance to forge connections and relationships in a mutual sharing of knowledge and appreciation of different experiences. 10. PARENT/FAMILY PROGRAM Parents and family members often provide a meaningful level of support to students and can enhance the college experience. Chapters
should recognize the importance of these people and find ways to engage and educate them about the fraternity/sorority experience. 11. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The personal development of each chapter’s membership should be of paramount importance. Many chapters have membership development programs in place that address the broad range of issues, challenges, and interests students face during college. Each chapter should host a program each year to demonstrate their commitment to personal development. The purpose of this program is to prepare members for life after college. 12. VALUES CLARIFICATION PROGRAM Fraternities and sororities are each founded on fundamental values that represent the ideals for which members should strive. While not all founding values are the same, each chapter should make it a priority to educate the membership about their respective founding values. While it is our hope that all educational programs address the chapter’s founding values, this program should specifically address the importance of the values. To that end, each chapter should host a program that discusses the importance or relevance of one or more of the chapter’s founding values for their members. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS While sponsoring and co-sponsoring programs is important, there are other responsibilities chapters have as part of the fraternity and sorority community. Sending representatives to appropriate meetings, programs, and events on campus is also a significant component of developing a supportive community. Chapters must fulfill four (4) of the five (5) attendance requirements to be placed in the “meets expectations” category. 1. ANNUAL MEETING Each chapter must complete an Annual Meeting with their respective DFSL Advisor at the time their chapter transitions leadership positions. This meeting should include the chapter advisor, faculty advisor, and members of the chapter executive board. It is also recommended to include the house director/fraternity resident director (for chapters with houses). The chapter is responsible for scheduling this meeting and for completing all pre-meeting materials provided by DFSL staff in advance. 2. FALL MARYLAND GREEK LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Each Fall, DFSL hosts the Maryland Greek Leadership Conference, a day-long conference where students can choose different sessions to attend in order to build their leadership skills. The chapter President, Chapter Expectations chair, and House Manager (if applicable) are required to attend but chapters are encouraged to send additional members. There is also a mandatory fee, regardless of attendance, each chapter is expected to pay. 3. SPRING GREEK LEADERS’ RETREAT Each Spring, DFSL hosts a leadership retreat for all chapter presidents and the governing council executive boards. Each chapter president must attend. If the chapter president is unable to attend the retreat, a member of the chapter executive board must serve in his/ her place. There is also a mandatory fee, regardless of attendance, Each chapter is expected to pay. 4. FALL & SPRING NEW MEMBER CONVOCATION Each semester, DFSL hosts a convocation for all new members.
Attendance is required for all students involved in a fraternity or sorority new member process at the time of the convocation. Students who join a fraternity or sorority after the convocation has occurred must attend the next semester. New Member Educators/Intake Coordinators must also attend. 5.FALL AND/OR SPRING NEW MEMBER EDUCATOR WORKSHOP Fraternities and sororities often struggle to identify appropriate activities for new members and interests to participate in as part of the new member program. Therefore, it is required that each chapter sends its New Member Educator/Intake Coordinator to a training program spon sored by DFSL. If the New Member Educator/Intake Coordinator is unable to attend the training, then a suitable executive board officer can attend in his/her place. Chapters that do not comply with this expectation will not be allowed to host intake/ recruitment the following semester. CATEGORIES OF COMPLIANCE Chapters are expected to comply with all expectations as outlined in this policy. Failure to do so may result in restricted privileges and/or loss of recognition. These expectations should not, however, negatively impact a student leader’s ability to achieve academically. Therefore, chapters with fewer than fifteen (15) members have the ability to propose reduced requirements if the burden of fulfilling the expectations has the possibility of negatively impacting students’ academic performance. At the conclusion of each academic year, chapters will be placed in one of the following categories for each area (paperwork, programming, and attendance). Failure to achieve at least “meets expectations” status in each area will result in an overall category of “below expectations.” 1. EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS To be in the Exceeds Expectations category, chapters must comply with all standards at all times and meet all respective deadlines. 5 of 5 Paperwork Requirements 12 of 12 Programming Requirements including the four required program areas 5 of 5 Attendance Requirements Chapters that meet this standard will be recognized on the DFSL website. 2. MEETS EXPECTATIONS In order to meet the basic expectations of being a recognized fraternity or sorority, chapters must have completed the following requirements by the stated deadline: 4 of 5 Paperwork Requirements - Chapters that submit paperwork past the deadline will be granted “compliance” status provided they submit the component within 24 hours of the posted due date. These chapters will not, however, be eligible for exceeds expectations classification. 8 of 12 Programming Requirements including the four required program areas.

Eta Chapter's 2015 Open House Reveals “Castle on the Row”
T
he Eta Chapter's Forth Annual Open House was held on Saturday, April 25, 2015, in conjunction with the University's annual, campus wide, open house known as MARYLAND DAY. Maryland Day, held on the last Saturday of each April, draws over 100,000 visitors each year. The annual Open House event is the Chapter's opportunity to “Show Case” their House, not only to Alumni, but to their parents. As in prior years, many parents of Active Brothers took this opportunity to come to the House, meet their son's brothers, learn about Phi Sig's rich history from the Alumni and see the living conditions within the House. The Open House featured an hors d'oeuvre buffet of wings, shrimp, subs and sweets. Alumni who had not seen each other in several decades reunited, introduced family members and swapped stories. One of the true values of Open House is seeing the interaction between Alumni and Actives. The Alumni get to see the fine young men who are now maintaining the Phi Sig tradition and the Actives get to learn a bit about their history and the true meaning of "Brother for Life".

his wife, Lynn. Not to be outdone, Brother Robert Mondonedo, '85, from Harwood, Maryland, had quite a gathering of sorority girls pose with his vintage 70’s Camaro. The only problem is they blocked the view of the car in the picture (when you got mint condition muscle cars you wanna see them). The 70's drew Brothers from near and far; Brother Leon Boulavsky ‘75 from Arlington, Virgina; Jim Allen ‘77 from Fairfax Station, Virginia, Townsend Reese ‘76 from Alexandria, Virginia, as well as Michael Boulavsky ‘77 from

Kayla Flood, Wayne H. Bethards ’59, Betty Bethards, and Alumni First Vice President Chris Flood ‘13 and Janie Wright enjoy the festivities. The tables were crowded at feeding time. UMD Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Matt Supple dropped by to share a “leadership” story with Chapter Advisor Jay Gobeil ’12.
Houston, Texas and Drew Connor ‘76 from Cooper City, Florida, were present and accounted for. Pictures from the event can be viewed at your Eta Alumni Association Photo Vault: https:// etaalumnivault.smugmug.com/Other/Open-House2015/ A highlight of the Open House Event is the annual presentation to alumni honorees being enshrined in the Eta Hall of Fame. This years honorees were: Jay Gobeil, past president ‘13, and Ryan Kief ‘12, We congratulate them both. Phi Sig Alumni from all decades have come to look forward to the Alumni Reunion, held during the evening following the Open House, at the Cornerstone Loft or, as the 'old guys' remember it, the 'Vous. This year was no different, drawing even more Alumni than in past years. The reunion was so successful we plan to make it an annual event. So mark your calendar now for April 30, 2016. - John J. B. Eta Alumni Association Motto: "Neither rain, nor cold, nor an early game time stays these alumni from a great tailgate." - John J. B. Wright 2015 a.d.
November 7th. 9:00 am ET Lot 1d - University of Maryland. Members of your Eta Alumni Association Executive Committee, along with a few helpful family members and friends, braved the blowing wind, the sweeping rain and a temperature below 40 degrees, in order to arrive when the lots were first opened by the University for tailgaters, to set up your Alumni Homecoming Tailgate. We had to, like 'the Sooners' of old, "rush to claim our prime tailgating spaces" taking into account space enough for the wood-fired pizza oven and proximity to the facilities (port-a-johns). Our first mission accomplished, we took to setting up the foul weather shelters, the sound system, numerous decorations and, most importantly, the beer coolers. Shortly after 9:00 am, so very early in the day, we were joined and assisted by first three Phi Sig Alumni to arrive: Greg Young '84 from Florida, Steve Baker '82 from New Jersey and Vic Alonso '12 (recently from New Hampshire). I guess this was the "ready-for-a-good time" crew. We renewed our brotherhood, caught up on the families and jobs and then watched in amazement as the chefs from River House Pizza fired up their wood burning pizza oven. The oven is manufactured in, and imported from, Italy, and sent to Maine, where it is fitted to a custom trailer, and then driven to the University of Maryland just for us. After about 20 16

HOMECOMING TAILGATE: A ROARING SUCCESS minutes and six good size logs, the oven is hot enough to begin cooking. The owner explained to us that once the oven is ready (1100 degrees F on the bottom and 1800 degrees F at the roof of the oven), it is so well insulated that it will retain a heat of 500 degrees for 24 hours after they stop cooking. With drooling mouths, we watched as they prepared and cooked dozens of pizzas. Taking only 90 seconds to cook a single pizza, they soon had our feast ready. As the rain tapered off and the temperature climbed to a refreshing 54 degrees, Phi Sigs converged on our location. For, as we all know; "It is always fair weather boys, when the Phi Sigs come back home." Soon our tailgate tents were full and our Alumni gathering, like a good pizza sauce, spread out to cover the entire parking lot aisle. Comprising over 120 Alumni, family and friends, the Eta Alumni Association Homecoming Tailgate boasted being one of the largest Tailgates that morning. Brothers dined on the custom made fresh baked pizzas. Greg Young even got a lesson from the chefs on how to toss the pizza dough and he was soon looking like "Papa John".

Homecoming 2015
With Phi Sig Alumni representing all decades, from the 60’s to 2015, the gathering was a celebration of our Fraternity, days gone by and those to come, our Alma Mater's traditions, basketball not football, as well as our Brotherhood, family and friends. Michael Boulavsky '77, in for the weekend from Texas and attending his third Homecoming Tailgate, stated that he loves coming north for this event and that he plans to see everyone next year (or maybe he said something about wanting to stick something in your ear). We’re frankly not so sure because it was rather crowded, loud, and noisy.

Make plans now to gather with us next year. Looks like October 15th against the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. I am looking forward to see all of our Alumni in 2016. - John J. B. Wright, Esq. ‘82
Photos (clockwise, from opposite page): Our flag flew high, yet soggy, over the Eta Alumni Tailgate; The oven was warm, and brought forth delectable pizzas eagerly sought by those who were chilled and who were chillin’. Always prepared, Alumni President Criscuoli arrived in style courtesy of the College Park Fire Department Adrienne and Michael ‘83 Albers braved the weather and wondered in amazement at the size of the crowd and quality of the pizza. Both the chefs and the oven were cooking up a storm as Eta Alumni scarfed-down slice after slice of woodfired pies. December 2015

Oh, You Phi Sig Brothers!. Over 40 Brothers, and some of their wives, attended a 50th Reunion over the October 2nd weekend at the University. The effects of Hurricane Joaquin disrupted the weekend plans somewhat but nothing stops a Phi Sig from a good party. And a good party it was!! On Friday night a reception, dinner and program were held at the Marriott Conference Center on campus. Cecil Given ‘68 was funny and poignant as Master of Ceremonies and many brothers shared stories and memories of their days in College Park, including George Buck ‘65, Hank Lins ‘64, Ron Rayne ‘64, Woody Stark ‘65, Bob (Bluto) Berry ‘66 and Bob Wagner ‘64 to name a few. The laughter was nonstop! Fortunately for the wives, we didn’t sing any songs, although “Oh ,You Phi Sig Brothers” (think about the first few lines of the song) might have been appropriate. On Saturday the tailgate party was moved to the Marriott because of the weather, but the Bloody Mary’s and breakfast made for a cozy and intimate

time. A number of other Brothers, including Skip Zahniser ‘65, Ed Banks ‘63 and J.P. Smith ‘65 (who came with Chuck “Nipple Head” Newman) came for the tailgate and the Maryland-Michigan game. Art Brzostowski ‘68 showed up with Tony Santi and a few of their football teammates. Fortunately the football game was moved to 12 noon from the scheduled 8:00 pm start. While the game didn’t turn out well for the Terps, a 28-0 loss to Michigan, a better time could not have been had. The post-game gathering at The Commons in the Marriott was great as Phi Sig’s told stories and shared their memories from 50 years ago. Roland MacDonald ‘68 and Sue, his wife, were in attendance. Sue summed it up the best - “the faces have changed but when you look into each other’s eyes it’s like we were back when we first met”.

“It’s like we were back when we first met” Memorabilia of many kinds was on display at the Reunion. Ed Banks ’63 explains: “The difference between the two photo ID's is not a camera defect but rather the result of consuming 6,200 beverages and 1,900 pizzas.I offer my Gate and Key Social Honorary ID membership card rather than the Phi Beta Kappa membership card because, well, frankly we Phi Sigs, as you recall, had different priorities.”
Life as a Phi Sig at the University of Maryland in the 60’s was an experience which we will never forget. It shaped our lives for the better. How lucky we were to have been together during those formative years.

Bob Mister ‘65 put the Reunion together, as he had in 1992, and he had invaluable help from Walt Laake ‘65 who arranged for the dinner at The Marriott and procured great football tickets, from Si Chebithes ’66 who assisted in drafting the Reunion flyers and keeping a record of who was coming, etc., committee members and from Joe Criscuoli ‘82 who continues to keep the Phi Sig alumni spirit alive. Wayne Bethards ‘59 put together a great Reunion in Columbia in 2005 and Mike Stevenson ‘63 and Cal Hook ‘60 did the same in Ocean City in 2007. Thanks to them, Bob Mister and all who have helped in all of the Reunions. It’s been a great ride.

J. Eric “Vinny” Vinson Eta Class of 1986 B.S., Accounting President of Vinson & Company, a full service CPA firm specializing in business consultation & taxation Never married, live with my daughter, Summer Vinson (my favorite season) Joined Eta Alumni Association: 07/15/10 6-Year Member. Last Renewed: 07/01/15 Six Columns Donor: Phi Level
The THIRD DEGREE: What first compelled you to become a member of Phi Sigma Kappa? Eric Vinson: I was spending my first season in Ocean City as a busboy at Phillips Crabhouse, had been accepted into the Engineering Program right out of High School, and found out I was 10,000 or something on the waiting list for student housing. Another busboy, Clyde Taber said he was pledging Phi Sig and offered me the chance to room with him at Phi Sig. I remember moving in, telling myself I was not pledging for a year or two, just get the lay of the land. By the sixth or seventh night of heading to the Vous with my newfound friends, I can vaguely remember accepting my pledge bid. Best thing ever happened to me. I played Soccer, wrestling and Spring and Summer lacrosse most of my life and I think it was the camaraderie that attracted me. TTD: What were your lowest and highest points at Phi Sig? Eric Vinson: My lowest would have to be failing out of Engineering after three semesters. I was way too social and after coasting through high school and graduating tenth in my class, I didn’t think I had to study. Dru Bagwell saved me. I took a time management course (most valuable course I ever took), and had to see Dru at 7 a.m. every Friday morning. We reviewed my grades, etc. and he inspired me to succeed and I graduated in Accounting, got a job at a small CPA firm in Ocean City; passed the CPA exam shortly thereafter. When my daughter came, I started my own practice out of my house and had Summer with me 24/7. Hmmm, maybe joining Phi Sig was the second best thing…. My highest point was being a member of a team of brothers who recolonized the Kappa Hexaton Chapter at Stetson University in Deland Florida. I received the “Stuart H. Rudisill National Leadership Award” and was
proud of our accomplishment, I believe it was the first ever to be re-colonized by underclassmen. The following year we started the Phi Hexaton Chapter at Towson University. TTD: What were the most important things you learned as a member of Phi Sigma Kappa? Eric Vinson: I would say number one would be treat everyone fairly and with respect. I met a lot of brothers with diverse backgrounds and, after being a “jock” all my life, I realized that I liked people of sometimes diverse and strange (at least to me) backgrounds, and It’s truly helped me throughout my life and I am a better person for it. TTD: What advice would you like to share with our current undergraduate members? Eric Vinson: Don’t hold back. You will live a much fuller life if you try and fail, rather than never to have tried. Also, don’t take life too seriously. Get the work done, then have a ball. TTD: What was your greatest accomplishment at Phi Sig? Eric Vinson: I was, if I remember correctly, the number one requested big brother for my nine semesters at the house. That always did, and still does, make me Damn Proud!!! p.s. I am also the alumni who named “Quarter”!

Membership Report
Payments From Eta to IHQ Top $9,000.00 On November 14, 2015 donations from the Eta Alumni Association to our International Headquarters reached a new milestone. These donations, in the form of Sustaining Member Dues, rose above $9,000.00 with a payment of $1,630.00 designed to register 326 Alumni of the Eta Chapter in the program. The "Forever Phi Sig" Sustaining Member Program was created in 1995 at the 55th General Convention to help provide a source of steady income for alumni clubs and associations while helping to offset the cost of printing the Signet and maintaining the Fraternity's membership files. The program led to the setting of alumni dues for all Phi Sigs. How did the Sustaining Member Program come about? The Signet has been the quarterly journal of Phi Sigma Kappa since 1879. Currently the Signet is funded jointly by the Grand Chapter and the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation. The increases in the publishing and postage costs associated with producing the Signet, combined with the Fraternity's growing membership roll, was the primary catalyst for creating the Sustaining Member program. These increasing costs, combined with the need to continue adding programs like traveling leadership consultants, regional and national leadership schools and conclaves, and improved technology, made it vital to seek additional
income sources. Further, it was decided not to saddle the active members with an additional fee increase that many could ill afford (presently, initiate and census fees from students make up 63% of the Grand Chapter's operating budget income). Additionally, the 1997 General Convention approved legislation to tie alumni club voting strength to the club's number of Sustaining Members. How the Sustaining Member Program works: The 55th General Convention provided an option where an alumni club collects the Sustaining Member dues from its alumni membership and remits to the Grand Chapter a fee of $5 per respondent. Alumni from closed chapters (provided the alumni club is not operating), chapters without alumni clubs, and alumni clubs that choose not to participate in the Sustaining Member program, are billed through the Signet. All proceeds will be retained by the Grand Chapter. Since it's inception in 1995 the "Forever Phi Sig" Sustaining Member program has raised thousands of dollars for alumni clubs and house corporations to fund local alumni events, alumni club newsletters, chapter house improvements, and alumni club scholarships for undergraduate chapters.
The "Forever Phi Sig" Sustaining Member program has been an unqualified success, not only for the Grand Chapter but for the participating alumni clubs as well. The money raised through this program will continue to help both the Grand Chapter and alumni clubs provide important services for our growing membership as we face the new challenges and opportunities of the next millennium. Typically the Eta Alumni Association registers our alumni in “batches” so that Eta Brothers will receive the upcoming Signet magazine, distributed by the International Headquarters staff. The “batch” on November 14th represents the fourth largest single year contribution. Our past contributions are as follows” Members

Be Someone’s Superhero...
Give a Brother a Gift Membership in the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa There are 844 living alumni of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. However, you are one of just 332 alumni who will have received this magazine, and will have read this ad. Why? Well, to quote an ad for a little green credit card, it’s because “membership has it’s privileges.”
On the inside back cover of this issue is a form that will enable you to “Give the Gift of Membership” to a Brother who has not yet renewed for “Year 6.” If you choose to, a Brother can enjoy the benefits you enjoy and you can enjoy knowing that you gave the gift of membership (and a subscription to this magazine).
Only members in good standing of our Alumni Association receive each and every issue of our award-winning magazine. Our members in good standing will also receive advance notice of social events, members discounts and a host of current and soon-to-be-released benefits.
This year, you can be a hero by giving someone a membership in the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa.
While revived and going strong, your alumni association in its sixth year has a goal to retain 100% of our “Year 5” members, and to grow to a total of 400 members. You are a member in good standing for “Year 6.” But, what about those listed on the previous page?

A Brief History of “The THIRD DEGREE”
I
n the 5 years, 5 months, and 15 days since the revitalization of our association, we have published ten “newsletters” (yeah, right, sure… “newsletters”) - totaling 516 pages and featuring 656 photos. Along the way, in our efforts to communicate with our members and a small, but seriously broken, fan base, we have killed both a small to mid-sized rainforest and whatever honor may have remained in the fields of journalism and publishing. With our mailings we have literally kept a small Post Office from closing, and we now proudly present our favorite “Top Ten” for review, remembrance and appreciation. DAMN PROUD.

Shown above, in a rare photo from the archives of the National Geographic Society, are the members of the Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa. In their spare time, they’re responsible for building our alumni association, for meeting our goal of 400 paid members in 2015, and for membership renewals for “Year 6” of operations of your alumni association. Membership Certificates Released The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association is pleased to announce that fullcolor versions of Membership Certificates have been unveiled. The certificates proudly display our association logo in full color. Our original logo was drawn by hand in 1994. The artist, Joe Criscuoli ‘82, used a traditional technical pen and indigo ink to create a logo that could be used to garner the interest of Eta Alumni in attending the 1997 Eta Centennial Celebration. John J. B. Wright, Esq. ‘82, then serving as President of the Eta Alumni Association, also served as Creative Director for the development of the logo.
5” x 7” VERSION - READY TO CUT-OUT AND FRAME
Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa
In 2010, when the alumni group was revitalized in support of the re-chartering of the Eta Chapter, Criscuoli reached back in time, scanned the old art and used it in the development of a number of communications projects. Our full-color logo was prepared with the help of a local professional computer illustrator who remarked, “This logo is one of the most intricate designs I have encountered in some time. It is striking in its combination of heraldic and fraternal icons and images that are readily associated with Maryland. It was a pleasure to work with Joe to create this image and I hope you will be very proud to display it.” DAMN PROUD

Alumni Notes (cont’d.) Nancy and I retired to Vero Beach, Florida in 1993, where we currently reside. Our house is in a tennis complex and I play almost daily. We also belong to the Space Coast Miata Club and enjoy trips and activities with other Miata enthusiasts. We also cruise several times a year. I'm fortunate that Nancy loves watching sports. We both follow Terps football and basketball, the Nationals and, most of all, the Redskins. Staying in Touch Brother Greg Barber ‘68 writes: “I was only at Maryland for two years but they were fun years. I usually hung out with Mike Anderson who was my roommate and we both wrestled for Phi Sig and I played on our golf team and we won the frat championship in my freshman year. Now I live on Long Island and snow bird at Ponte Vedra, Florida. I got to see my big brother, Bob Manuel, on our way back north two years ago
in South Carolina. He has a beautiful home and is quite an artist. I threaten to finally return to College Park and I have been in touch with several of my frat brothers. I own Ecofriendlyprinter.com and my passion is neilswheelsny.com for donating Food and for Destigmatizing Mental illness. Both sites tell my story. My toughest task related to Phi Sig was telling my Dad I lost my golf clubs in a poker game to Nick. He would have been so happy and proud of Paul for being a "Brother" in the same fraternity he belonged to so many years ago. I wish he had lived to see it. James Victor Anthenelli
Eta Class of 1972
July 30, 1950 - May 26, 2015 James Victor Anthenelli, Esq., late of Millsboro, Del. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 26, 2015 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Jim was born on July 30, 1950 in Middlesex, New Jersey. He was the son of Michael and Edith Papa Anthenelli. He graduated from Middlesex High School in 1968 and received his B.S. in Economics from the University of Maryland in 1972. He received his juris doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1976. He began his career as Assistant State's Attorney for Wicomico County and practiced as a criminal defense attorney with several law firms in Salisbury, Md. These included Hearne and Bailey; Robins, Johnson and Anthenelli; Anthenelli and Otway; and Anthenelli, Phoebus and Hickman. Jim participated as a member of the Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland for over 21 years and held three gubernatorial appointments. He received a variety of accolades from the legal community, including being a repeat winner of Metropolitan Magazine's Best Lawyer in Salisbury award. Jim was the beloved husband of Monica Anthenelli for 42 years and he is also survived by his son Michael Anthenelli and his wife Danielle, his daughter Elizabeth Baynard and her husband Robert, his grandson Nolan James Baynard, his brother Robert Anthenelli, his sister-in-law Bridgett Besinger, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Edythe Klein Fallon. A memorial Mass was held at Holy Savior in Ocean City, Maryland, on June 25th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice or the Believe In Tomorrow Children's Foundation of Ocean City. Salisbury attorney Jim Anthenelli was “the lawyer that everybody aspired to be,” former law partner Jim Otway said. “He exemplified civility and professionalism,” said law partner John Phoebus of Anthenelli, who he said was a mentor to him and many others. Anthenelli and Phoebus became law partners in January 2014, and the law firm became Anthenelli, Phoebus & Hickman at the beginning of this year, Phoebus said. Phoebus and Kristy Hickman will continue to leave Anthenelli’s name at the beginning of the law firm’s title, he said. Anthenelli was somebody other attorneys would turn to for advice, Phoebus said. Anthenelli represented many clients during his more than 35 years as a defense attorney, including Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps when he faced impaired driving charges in Salisbury in 2004. Greg Coburn, an Ocean City-based attorney who was friends with Anthenelli and had played golf with him in recent years, said his death is a loss to the legal community as well as his friends and family. “You really can’t measure the loss of someone like Jim,” Coburn said. And while he was well known as a lawyer, both Coburn and Otway talked about how funny he was. Coburn said Anthenelli got into golfing three or four years ago, and he never liked to hit while people were behind him because he’d say they were looking at him. Anthenelli was also a friend and mentor to Salisbury attorney Bruce Anderson. “Out of court, he was one of my best friends, and we shared many laughs together either in his office or on the golf course,” Anderson wrote in an email. “I miss him very much but I have so many fond memories that will last for my lifetime. I was happy and proud to be a part of his life and I’m so glad he let me be a part of his.” Anthenelli wasn’t just respected by his fellow lawyers, but also by law enforcement officials and judges, Otway said. Phoebus also spoke of how Anthenelli and police officers respected each other despite being on the opposite sides of court cases. David Elzey, a former Mothers Against Drunk Driving advocate who has come to court on the opposite side of cases as Anthenelli, said Anthenelli treated him and MADD’s mission with a lot of respect. Even if Anthenelli had handled, for example, a DUI case many times before, he’d still treat it with the same importance, Phoebus said. He was detailoriented and brought a good presence in court, he said. Jim approached every case like it was the first case he ever had,” Phoebus said. Otway also spoke of how ready Anthenelli was for his cases. “He was always extremely wellprepared,” Otway said. “He always advocated vigorously for all of his clients.” He was a “wonderful guy,” Coburn said, “Everybody respected him and thought the world of him.”

The THIRD DEGREE 61
Charles Daniel “Danny” Held
Eta Class of 1963
December 4, 1941 – October 31, 2014 Danny Held died on October 31, 2014. Danny was a great guy, a roommate and my good friend during our days at College Park. He was born in Lutherville, Maryland, graduated from Towson High School, the University of Maryland and the University of Baltimore School of Law. After being admitted to the bar, Danny practiced law in Towson and then joined his father, who was also a lawyer, in his offices across from the courthouse in Towson on West Pennsylvania Avenue, retiring when he was diagnosed six months before his death. He had a general law practice with concentrations in criminal law, traffic cases and estates. He left behind his son, Christopher, Chris’ his wife Jessica, his grandson, Daniel, his daughter, Sarah Held, his former wife, Matoula (“Mattie”), seven brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Danny was the fifth of ten children. Danny’s avocation was racing stock cars. He raced his 1970 Plymouth Duster under the name “The Counselor” which, by 2010, had 445 one-quarter mile track runs in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia. He also had a 1970 Plymouth Duster which he showed at auto shows which had been owned and raced by his uncle, and which was shipped to Danny from Longview, Texas. Danny was very social, had a contagious smile, and many friends. His sister, Sarah Adams, remembers him as playing a “mean” trumpet, loving Lionel trains and singing. She also remembers him as being very fastidious (this must have happened after Phi Sig), quite organized and a great cook, who had a wonderful garden with apple, pear and peach trees and who canned his own pears, peaches and fresh vegetables throughout the summer. His nickname at Phi Sig was “The Stork” – he was long – and tall (6’4) and thin. Danny embodied the traits of many Phi Sig’s during the 1960’s – he was eager to help his friends, always ready for a party, sometimes did crazy things, but was smart and did what he had to do to prepare himself for a successful career after college – in Danny’s case, law school and the practice of law. We were fortunate to have Danny as a fraternity brother and I was fortunate to have him as a friend.

James D. Reese
Eta Class of 1967
May 24, 1945 – February 11, 2015 James David Reese, known as “Reese” to his boyhood friends and “Fudd” to his brothers in Phi Sig, passed away on February 11, 2015 from metastatic kidney cancer. He leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Pamela Reese, mother Eleanor Reese of Baltimore, and his sister Linda Ray and husband Nelson of South Carolina. Jim was born in 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Harold David Reese and Ruth Burrows. His birth mother, Ruth, passed away when Jim was in high school. Relatives still reside in Mt. Carmel, PA. I first met Jim when I was in the 5th grade when he moved to Catonsville, Maryland from Frostburg, Maryland where his father taught mathematics at Frostburg State. We formed a friendship that lasted from that time until we lost track of each other in the early 1970’s. While at Catonsville High, Jim and I were team mates on the lacrosse and soccer teams and were members of Gamma Sigma Beta Lambda fraternity. At the University of Maryland we were team mates on the freshman lacrosse team and roommates during our sophomore, junior and senior years. In 1966 we joined the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. Around #7, Jim was known by most as “Fudd.” Brothers remember him as always lighting up a room when he entered. His intellect and wit stood out. When Jim and I re-connected about two years ago we reminisced about our adventures and escapades both growing up in Catonsville and at the U of M. One of the most memorable of these adventures was the 1966 Spring Formal held at the Carousel Motel in Ocean City, Maryland. At the time it was owned by Bobby Baker, an associate of President Lyndon Johnson. Apparently whoever booked the Carousel neglected to tell the management about “the band.” Yup, we brought a band – Little Leroy and the Five Kings - out of DC. It turns out the motel was segregated. The arrival of the band was not taken well. Through the diplomatic intervention of some of the brothers (perhaps to include….or not to include brothers Stearns and Givens) the band was allowed to stay. Thus we did our part for the civil rights movement in Ocean City. Jim came up short on credits in 1967 and rather than be drafted, he joined the Marines Corps. In four years he rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant -- “Gunny Reese”, as he was called. Though volunteering for Vietnam several times, his MOS kept him at Twentynine Palms in the California desert. Once the “Hawk Missiles” of which he was in charge were decommissioned, the Corps made him an “Intelligence Officer.” His story of that posting, in the middle of the California desert, is the stuff of “Catch 22.” Jim returned to Baltimore in 1971 to complete his degree at Maryland and went on to work for Frito Lay. Ultimately he ended up in California. He worked briefly for Prudential and retired as a manager at Autozone in 2004. In retirement Jim enjoyed the company of his wife Pam and her family. He was an avid Civil War buff, enjoyed sports on TV still keeping up with the Terps as well as West Coast teams, eating popcorn and savoring a few beers. I will miss Jim’s daily emails and the occasional phone call as we solved the nation’s and world’s problem’s injecting humor into even the most serious of situations, and our in depth analysis of sports, particularly the coaching tactics of Coach Edsall and Coach Turgeon. Best wishes in the Chapter Eternal Brother Reese. We’ll miss you. - Dennis Sirman, H ‘67

Final Word
Ten Issues, and 2,000 Days.
H
ave we really published ten issues of this “newsletter”? Has it really been 2,000 days since we revitalized this alumni association? Contrary to the old adage, time does not fly by when one is involved in a volunteer effort as immense as this one has become. I have always said that I have been blessed to be surrounded with a small, yet terrific, crew of Brothers, the members of our Executive Committee, who have made these past 2,000 days a great deal of fun. But times have not always been enjoyable. These past few semesters have been especially difficult. And I have asked, when the times were most challenging, “Are we having fun yet?”. To which the reply was always, “Of course!” I owe a great deal to the Brothers with whom I have served. I fear it is a debt I may never be able to repay. In the pursuit of association excellence, your Executive Committee has performed better than I ever could have asked. In pursuit of that elusive “400 member goal” - well, I still have hope and I have continued to pitch (and bitch) long after my arm should have been iced-down and retired (and my verbal urgings should have been silenced). I want to especially thank my family for their support. No one has put more effort into the innumerable mailings that this association has put out than my sons, Joseph and Michael, and Grace, my wife. Our First Lady has served just as long as I have - as proofreader, photographer, and as advisor. And I am extremely grateful to these three people for allowing me the time that this association has kept me - and us - from otherwise enjoying a restful weekend here or there. It has been an honor to serve as your President, but more so to have served with the other members of the Executive Committee and to have had the support of my family these past 2,000 days...and ten issues. My wish for you is a bright and prosperous new year, filled with good health and happiness. Without these two things, as my Grandfather would say, things are quite a bit harder. Damn Proud,
Joseph E. Criscuoli, ‘82, Editor 64
