Dear Brothers of Eta Chapter, It has been 89 days since my first “Letter to the Alumni” and our Executive Committee asked me to brief you on the progress that has been made to-date, and the immediate goals and challenges that are a part of the effort to revitalize your alumni association and bring the Eta Chapter back to the campus of the University of Maryland.

The Eta Colony now boasts 36 active members. The Colony is eagerly awaiting the recognition of the Inter-Fraternity Council and is preparing the petition to our Grand Council for the return of a Charter to College Park. As the time draws near for the evaluation of our Colony, the existence and involvement of a strong and organized alumni association becomes ever more important.

Unfortunately, I must report to you that without your personal assistance and commitment to our cause, I am concerned that the alumni may not provide a compelling case for our return to campus.

Membership Development When I first wrote to the alumni on July 30th, I did so with the verbal support of 125 Brothers who had authorized me to use their names as signatories to an alumni pledge, “We Believe.” Now, just 89 days later, we have 167 Brothers who have become paid contributors to our endeavor. This is a terrific accomplishment, and I am very grateful to those who have already stepped forward with their support.

However, there are still 36 signatories to that pledge, and 715 Brothers in total, who have not yet joined our ranks. This letter, straight up, is designed to bring all our alumni into the fold...to compel you to join us...today.

So, What Have We Done Lately?

The Executive Committee of your Alumni Association has been a busy group. To-date we have:         

Secured Articles of Incorporation Secured a federal tax identification number Secured recognition of our corporate charter by the State of Maryland.

Launched our own Website Launched a Facebook Page Established a LinkedIn Group Developed and distributed two mailings Distributed several e-mails to all alumni Improved our membership listing accuracy

Supported the initiatives of the advisory board guiding the colonization effort Held regular monthly meetings Published a 40-page, full-color magazine Sponsored an Alumni-Colony Cookout Sponsored an Alumni Tailgate Event Assisted with Colony Rush Prepared a Video: “Rush Phi Sigma Kappa Fall 2010” Established our own YouTube Channel

Here are a few of our “coming attractions”:  Publish and distribute a comprehensive membership directory  Encourage business contacts and networking amongst alumni members  Sponsor, plan, and execute several social/networking events prior to the re-chartering event  Ensure that 100+ alumni members attend the re-chartering event  Establish, promote and maintain a scholarship program benefitting the undergraduates  Assist our housing corporation in the search, and financing, for a chapter house Where Can You Help?

Where do we really need your help? There are 2 important items where you, and only you, can make a substantial difference.

 During the past few months we have greatly reduced our number of “Lost” Brothers. However, we still have no way of contacting 105 Brothers who graduated between the years 1950 and 1999. We need your help with our “Lost” Brothers, and a list of the missing is presented in the third column of this page. Take a look and see if you can tell us where to find these brothers by writing to me at alumni@psk-eta.com

 You can help with the growth of our alumni association. If you are reading this letter, well, we haven’t yet added your name to our list of members.

I would like to ask if every Brother reading this letter would please complete the Alumni Data Sheet on page 4 and mail it to me at your very earliest opportunity. This sheet collects an expanded amount of information designed to enable us to reduce the costs associated with alumni communications, speed breaking news to our alumni, encourage networking on a professional and personal level, and provide our national headquarters with an example of how effective our outreach program has been.

I would also like to invite you to contribute to the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa. Any amount will be most welcome and greatly appreciated. If your donation is $35 or more, we will list you as a Member of our association and remit $5 to our Fraternity’s Headquarters in your name, which will qualify you as a Sustaining Member - and also provide you with a subscription to the Signet magazine. While supplies last, we will also see that you receive the inaugural issue of The THIRD DEGREE, the Eta Alumni magazine, and the Fall 2010 issue of the Signet magazine, our national magazine.

-3It’s Time to Make the Commitment Since June 21st, your Alumni Association has recruited 167 paid members, Eta alumni who graduated as recently as 2002 and as long ago as 1944, each of whom have answered my call and who stand as one in support of a new and vital alumni association.

As a result of this letter, I sincerely hope that you will take the first step in making a commitment to become a part of a permanent and revitalized alumni association. We really need to count you amongst those who support a revitalized Alumni Association and the return of Eta Chapter to Maryland.
