Dear Pallotti Football Family and Friends, High school football has a special place in America. I grew-up in the mid-west and even as a “so-so” running back I realized that there is a unique culture around high school football. Pallotti has great varsity teams in many sports and football certainly sets the standards for what we call “Pallotti Pride.”

It is easy to point to titles and win/loss records to show success, but the deeper values that are instilled in our young men are really what make the football program outstanding. The high standards set fourth for character and integrity is what makes this program a true reflection of St. Vincent Pallotti’s mission for educating our youth.

Coach “C”, Coach Messay, and their assistant coaches have set their priorities for our young athletes. Of course we like to win, but doing it the right way is what we are all about.

Bringing Christian values and a work ethic into these young men’s lives will serve them well as adults.

This program has all the right ingredients for success: the great dedication of the coaching staff, the dedicated players, and the supportive parents. We all are looking forward to a safe and great season.

Welcome to St. Vincent Pallotti High School and the 2007 Football Season at Supplee Field at T. Howard Duckett Park.

Tonight’s football game is the culmination of many hours of sacrifice, dedicated weight lifting and rigorous practice. Pallotti is proud of all the young athletes who represent their school, communities, and families.

We are looking for an exciting season of competition and anticipate the best from all of our student athletes.

We appreciate you attending tonight’s game and hope that you become a regular, not only for football, but for all of our athletic contests. Thank you for your support and for your enthusiastic participation as spectators.

Attendance at St. Vincent Pallotti High School interscholastic athletic events entitles spectators to enjoy a competitive exhibition of skill in a Christian educational setting. Spectators, please give the student athletes positive encouragement and support. Show respect for opposing players, coaches and spectators. Please refrain from booing, taunting or intimidating the officials and opponents. Such behavior is unfriendly and unacceptable. Please respect the integrity and judgment of game officials; they are doing their best to promote the student athlete and the game. Be a positive representative of your school community.

Dear Pallotti football team, I am very honored to be the chaplain for the Pallotti football team this fall. Sports have always been a very big part of my life. I played College baseball for the University of Dallas, and loved every moment of the competition, practicing, (excluding running drills), and fraternity with my team. I remember one line that my coach, Coach Viladed, used to say to us all of the time to get us motivated: “The only person that you are cheating, when you don’t give your all is yourself.” The same holds true in our journey towards God and giving God his due. I recently started training for boxing again (we had a boxing club while I was in the seminary), and throughout the strenuous workout that the trainer was putting me through I thought about the words of St. Paul: Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.

(1 Corinthians 9: 24-27) What is St. Paul saying? Gentlemen he is saying that we are to sacrifice all for our eternal destiny: Heaven.

Imagine…You could be the greatest football player of all time; make tons of money; be famous, etc. but all is lost if we did not care for our soul and did not make it to the “Big Show”, Heaven. We have to put the same discipline and care for our souls as we do for our bodies to prepare for the season. We have to fight against any of our passions that can lead us into sin. Sometimes this takes a little pain and saying no. One saint said, a good Christian learns to say “No.” Just as an athlete needs to sacrifice time and live with some pain to attain his goal, the same is true to become a saint. We need to spend time in prayer, get to Mass on Sundays, and get to know the Lord. Now, you are not going to win all the battles in the spiritual life, just as your not always going to have the greatest game. Yet, through the grace of God and the mercy we receive from Jesus in the sacrament of Reconciliation, we call all win the war! What separates the men from the mice is how a man deals with fear and failure. A man who trusts in the Lord can get up after a fall and try again.

May God bless you all this season and may you all play for the glory of God. Let us all fight for the imperishable wreath which God has prepared for those who fight for Him!

This is Coach Courtemanche’s sixth year as a Pallotti football coach and his second year as Head Coach. He began his coaching career in 2000 at Pallotti as an assistant coach under then Coach Stu Mackintosh. From 2002-2003, Coach C was an assistant coach under Bob Milloy at Good Counsel. In 2004, Pat returned to Pallotti as the offensive/defensive line coach, helping Pallotti win their first MIAA Football Championship. Pat played high school ball at Our Lady of Good Counsel and received an academic/athletic scholarship to play at NCAA Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College. He received All-WVIAC honors his senior year in 1997. Pat lives in Bowie with his wife, Courtney.

They have a daughter, Addison, who will celebrate her first birthday in November, and Casey, a 6 year old yellow lab.

This is Coach Hailemariam’s fourth year on the coaching staff and his 2nd year as Assistant Head Coach /Defensive Coordinator. He began his football career at Wootton H.S., led his team to the ‘91 state championship, was team captain, and lead the state with 8 interceptions. He went on to play football for the University of Maryland, one of only four walk-ons on the ‘91 team.

He played Strong Safety for the Maryland Cougars of P.G. County, a semi-pro team, from ‘96-’99, and coached football with the Lanham B&G Club and High Point H.S. As owner of Star Fitness, a personal training company, he provides training to athletes including Jerome Nichols (Packers) and Shawn Merriman (Chargers).

Messay and his wife, Lana, are expecting their first child in November. They reside in Columbia with their affectionate dog, Destiny.

Head Coach - Junior Varsity Squad This is Coach Gibson’s first year at Pallotti. Prior to this, he coached with the Elkridge Hurricanes and served on their Board of Directors. He has also coached basketball for two seasons with the Savage Boys and Girls club, and has been a referee for both basketball and football. He attended East Carolina University.

This is Coach Oby’s first year with the Panthers. Playing at Mt. St. Joseph’s in Baltimore, he became the all-time sack leader at Howard Univ., and went to training camp with the Baltimore Ravens in ‘01. A starter for the Montreal Alouettes (CFL) in ‘02 & ‘03, he played with the St. Louis Believers ( Nat’l.

Indoor Football League) in ‘04, and the Albany Conquest of the Arena Football League in 2005.

This is Coach Bouie’s second season with the Panthers. He played high school football at Randallstown (MD) and was the starting Middle Linebacker for three years with the Howard University Bison, part of a defense that was ranked in the Top 5 in Division I AA in run defense and turnovers in the red zone. Mykle’s Motto is: “Actions speak louder than words”.

This is Coach Ted’s 2nd season with the Panthers. He’s been a successful soccer coach in So. Carolina & Maryland since ‘77; his expertise with special teams and the kicking game will be a great benefit. He lives in Berwyn Heights, with his wife, Marian. They are proud to have their son Ted, a Senior, on this year’s Panther roster.

In his first year at Pallotti, Coach “A.J.”, was a 2-time letter winner at Gwynn Park H.S. and selected 1st team all-league by The Washing-ton Post. He played 2 yrs. as a line-backer at Delaware St., trans-ferring to the Univ. of Maryland as a FB and TB. He recently com-pleted his 2nd season as a FB and LB with the Baltimore BlackBirds of the American Indoor Football Assn.

Offensive / Defensive Line Coach This is Coach Marks’ 3rd year at Pallotti. He played at St. John’s H.S. in D.C., and at NAIA Div. II St. Mary of the Plains. Named to the D.C. All-Met team, and a college All-Conf. standout, he played with the semi-pro Mont.

Co. Tigers and has 20 yrs. coaching experience. He lives in Ellicott City with his wife, Barbara.

They have three children: Sean (’96), Mary (’03), and Mike (‘09).

Coach Jamar Smith

Coach Steve Stanley Line Coach - Jr. Varsity Squad

This is Coach Stanley’s third year with our coaching staff.

Steve played on our varsity squad for three years and played both sides of the line, at offensive and defensive tackle, during two of those years. In his senior year, Steve was named to both the offensive and defensive lines of the AllConference Team before graduating in 2004

Courtney Courtemanche ATC, CSCS Athletic Trainer

QB/RB/Cornerbacks/Conditioning This is Coach Jamar’s second year on the Panthers coaching staff. Jamar played collegiate football at West Point and Howard University, where he excelled at the Running Back position and graduated at the top of his class in Health Sciences.

He also coaches development programs for NFL junior players.

This is Coach Morgan’s 3rd year with the Panthers. He previously coached WR’s at High Point H.S., his alma mater, where he lettered in Track & Field, Baseball, & Football. At Div. 1 AA Robert Morris Univ., he played WR & TE . A Phys. Ed. teacher at Phyllis E. Williams Elem. School, he resides in Gwynn Oak, MD.

Courtney is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College where she earned a B.S. degree in Sports Medicine. She has been an ATC for six years. She previously spent one year at Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. and this is her fourth year at Pallotti High School.
