JCPS Shines a Spotlight on Excellence with Inaugural Employee of the Year Ceremony
SMITHFIELD, NCJohnston County Public Schools (JCPS) honored 26 employees in various roles throughout the school district at the inaugural Spotlight on Excellence Employee of the Year Ceremony on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Honorees and their guests gathered at the Johnston County Agriculture Center in Smithfield for an evening filled with elegance, smiles, and gratitude in celebration of the extraordinary JCPS staff and their outstanding accomplishments that keep the school district moving FORWARD.
The Spotlight on Excellence Ceremony was created to highlight the hard work of JCPS educators and staff, and to directly acknowledge their impact on improving student outcomes and organizational success. Their dedication and commitment have set a remarkable example and have greatly contributed to JCPS’ overall success. Additionally, their ability to positively influence the school district’s students, staff, and families has made a real difference.
“The inaugural Spotlight on Excellence Employee of the Year Ceremony was hosted to show sincere honor and appreciation to the 26 award recipients for all that they do throughout the district,” stated Tracey Clark, Parent and Community Engagement Liaison and Special Events Coordinator. “As a school district, we strive to support all employees and ensure that each one is celebrated for their role within the system.”
This year’s event was particularly special in that it recognized educators from various positions, including bus drivers, custodians, coaches, information technology technicians, safety and security officials, school nutrition services managers, communication professionals, student services members, office support, teacher assistants, and more.

While many positions were recognized, the common theme was unity and collaborative effort. Event speakers reiterated that while the roles may differ, each one is vital to the overall success of the district and impacts the lives of students and staff in profound ways.
Benson Elementary Principal and the 2025-2026 JCPS Principal of the Year, Dr. Takicey Dunston, was the evening’s keynote speaker. Dr. Dunston’s remarks focused on excellence in education, stating, “Excellence in education is not defined by title. It is defined by dedication, compassion, and commitment that every student has the opportunity to succeed.”
Honorees ranged from first-year educators to those planning for retirement. Many of the educators share the same passion and commitment for education and an overarching belief that educators should meet students where they are, discover their strengths, and teach them techniques to use those strengths to improve in other areas of learning. This is what makes the recipients shine brightly.
“Excellence in education is about impact. Excellence requires sacrifice. Excellence in education requires us to have a heart,” Dr. Dunston continued. “You are the very essence of education, and tonight we shine a spotlight on you.”
The evening included award presentations with each honoree being individually recognized as they walked the red carpet to the stage, where JCPS Superintendent Dr. David Pearce and Johnston County Board of Education Chair Lyn Andrews presented them with an award commemorating their achievements. Pearce and Andrews expressed their sincere gratitude for each one’s role in supporting the JCPS vision.
Honoree Dr. Todd Holmes, Executive Director of Beginning Educator Support Team, was named the Human Resources Employee of the Year. A lifelong educator, throughout his career with JCPS, Holmes has transitioned from the classroom to his current administrative role, yet his passion for helping others in the field of education has never changed.
“Even though I haven’t been a classroom teacher for more years than I care to remember, I still view my job as a teacher. Now, instead of working with middle school students, I’m working with young professionals, principals, assistant principals, and district-level leadership as well,” he said.
“Continuing partnerships and collaborations with the various departments in the school system means that our actions, my actions, will encourage others to continue helping our beginning teachers and our international faculty as they continue the profession and move the school district FORWARD,” Dr. Holmes added.

Ms. Mariah Lee demonstrates exceptional dedication to both safety and student well-being, going above and beyond what is required of a bus driver. She combines excellent driving skills and professionalism with genuine care for her riders’ social and emotional needs, creating a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment on her bus. Her contagious positivity, firm yet kind approach, and strict adherence to safety guidelines make her a role model for students and colleagues alike. Ms. Lee also actively collaborates with administrators to address timing and behavioral concerns, helping foster open communication and effective solutions.

MS. ROBIN HIATT
Ms. Robin Hiatt is deeply committed to excellence and consistently holds herself and others to high standards. She is intentional and thoughtful in the support she provides, skillfully synthesizing information to help teachers make meaningful connections across Johnston County Public Schools initiatives. Ms. Hiatt partners with teacher leaders to plan effective, standards-based instruction and seamlessly integrates learning from PLCs and Instructional Focus Friday into her coaching and support sessions. She also supports K–5 Math Teacher Leaders in unpacking the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, planning high-quality instruction using rigorous strategies, and analyzing data to guide differentiation and instructional decisions.

Mrs. Majena Howell, Printshop Manager for Johnston County Public Schools, is an exceptionally dedicated professional whose creativity, leadership, and integrity make her highly deserving of this award. Her outstanding design work strengthens district communications, while her efficiency, collaboration, and attention to detail ensure high-quality resources across the district. Through innovative, cost-saving practices, she has overseen a fiscally responsible budget for nearly a decade. Her positive spirit, servant leadership, and tireless work ethic inspire others, and her impact is felt throughout Johnston County Public Schools.

Mr. John Ross Robertson exemplifies high-quality CTE through his commitment to hands-on, real-world learning and student success. He aligns South Johnston’s agriculture program with Associate for Career and Technical Education’s High-Quality CTE Framework, integrates cross-curricular projects like the Blue & Gold Nature Trail, and dedicates extensive time mentoring students through FFA events. Under his leadership, students have earned state and national recognition, reflecting the strong impact of his program and professional leadership.

Mr. Kirk McLaurin’s quiet dedication helps make Selma Middle School a welcoming, safe, and supportive place to teach and learn. Mr. McLaurin builds meaningful relationships with those around him, showing thoughtfulness in small details and offering kindness and encouragement when others need it most. Mr. Curtis Bradshaw, Behavior Specialist for Johnston County Public Schools, was nominated by colleagues across multiple schools and is widely described as calm, dependable, consistent, supportive, and nonjudgmental. While serving 17 schools, he remains focused on what is best for students in every interaction. A true leader by example, Mr. Bradshaw problem-solves, thinks creatively, and models effective strategies for supporting behavior. He is an active listener who ensures staff and families feel heard. His dedication and advocacy make him a tremendous asset to Johnston County Public Schools.

COACH SCOTT CHADWICK
Coach Scott Chadwick, head football coach at Clayton High, exemplifies passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to studentathletes. With more than 25 years in scholastic athletics, he reached his 200th career win this fall while leading the Comets to capture the 7A North Carolina High School Athletic Association Eastern Championship—the program’s first since 1989—before advancing to the 7A State Championship. The Comets also earned the Greater Neuse River Conference title, and Coach Chadwick was named Conference Coach of the Year. Through the dedication of Coach Chadwick and his staff, the team brought pride, unity, and lasting memories to Clayton and the entire Johnston County Public Schools community.

Coach Scott Jernigan is the heart of Meadow Athletics, serving as head coach for boys’ soccer and track and generously volunteering his time to support both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams during the winter. With more than 20 years of experience, he is a valued presence in the hallways and in every athletic season. A true team player, Coach Jernigan believes that seeing students learn, grow, and gain confidence is one of the greatest rewards of middle school athletics. In addition to coaching, he assists with all aspects of game-day preparation, from facilities to equipment, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
