Welcome Inside this issue you’ll find hundreds of programs to keep you active this spring and summer. Our catalog is organized by age-based sections with alphabeticallyarranged topic-related subheadings. Special events are listed in the agebased sections they fall under. To the right, you’ll find a table of contents for the sections, as well as separate indexes for articles and other information. On our inside back cover, you’ll find a map of JCPRD parks and facilities. Additional information and details about most of the programs in this catalog can be found at JCPRD.com.

About Our Cover Now that’s the look of a kid having fun! With 24 playgrounds located in 17 parks across the county, JCPRD sees these happy looks on a nearly daily basis. This particular child was among folks who attended the early July 2019 opening of the inclusive playground at Shawnee Mission Park. While designed for people with special needs, this playground and JCPRD’s other inclusive playground at Stilwell Community Park - are also meant to be really fun playgrounds for people of all ability levels. For a map of JCPRD parks, see the inside back cover, or find a listing of park amenities online at JCPRD.com.

Go to JCPRD.com for more details on our programs and to register.

Ten-year natural resource plan already making a difference Have you walked or biked on the orange or violet trails in Shawnee Mission Park yet this year? If you have, you probably noticed a dramatic illustration of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s Natural Resource Plan in action and a glimpse of things to come. “Visitors will notice a wide-open woodland again. It’s a drastic change” said JCPRD Field Biologist Matt Garrett. “The woodland had gotten to the point where people felt uncomfortable and unsafe using them, because basically they were exercising in a tunnel of invasive species.” Removal of about 200 acres of bush honeysuckle from three parks is an early and highly-visible part of the first full year of implementation of the new ten-year plan, which was approved in early 2019. The process of preparing the 187-page plan took about one and one-half years,

8

and involved inventorying ground cover types in district parks, setting goals and objectives, benchmarking against other agencies, and numerous opportunities for public engagement. JCPRD’s parklands currently contain about 4,300 acres of forest, 540 acres of shrub-scrub, 1,000 acres of prairie, 2,400 acres of non-native grassland, 7 acres of non-forested wetlands, and 400 acres of water. In addition to about 125 acres of honeysuckle in Shawnee Mission Park, contractors are also removing about 50 acres of the invasive plant from Ernie Miller Park, and another 25 acres from the site for the future Cedar Niles Park. Another part of the plan involves large-scale prairie restoration at Big Bull Creek Park, which opened in 2018. “We are working towards the goal of a 500-acre prairie at Big Bull Creek,”

Garrett said. “It’s a combination of planting new habitat, removing woody species, and making the current prairies more diverse.” Prior to the park’s late September 2018 opening, there were about 300 acres of restored prairie, and 80 more are planned for this year. Another part of the plan will involve long-term monitoring of plant populations every five years to make sure that the resource management efforts are paying off. If the entire natural resource plan is fully funded, JCPRD will spend a little under $7 million towards restoring and improving natural areas through 2029. “With natural resource management, the first two to three years of work is very resource heavy,” Garrett explained. “Our goal is that, after an initial investment, these natural areas will be managed at a lower cost than turf grass.”

Pardon our mess as we improve your parks Two major construction projects in Johnson County Park and Recreation District parks will impact visitors this summer. The projects are: the construction of John Barkley Plaza near the Renner Road entrance to Shawnee Mission Park, and replacement of the amphitheater and addition of accessible parking at Ernie Miller Park. Work on John Barkley Plaza, named after JCPRD’s first superintendent, got underway in January and is expected to conclude by mid-fall. The concept for the plaza is a more open and inviting area, which will serve as an informal meeting place, and let visitors get a better first glimpse of the park. The existing flagpole near the park entrance will remain where it is, and will be the central point of the area. A new 26’ by 60’ shade pavilion to

the west will not be rentable and is intended as a casual gathering area. The plaza will also feature a plantscape involving native grasses and forbs, a drinking fountain, bike share hub, and a bike fix-it station. Users of the plaza will have access to existing restrooms inside the vestibule of the nearby JCPRD Administration Building. An included road realignment will involve replacing the park’s “T” entry with more of a “Y,” with a new satellite parking lot to the northeast. The new road realignment should be completed in time for the start of summer camps in early June. Work on Phase 1 of a master plan for Ernie Miller Park will begin in late April, with completion by the end of the year. This will involve replacing the park’s outdoor amphitheater at its current location, while

Program locations, page 61

(913) 831-3359

increasing seating from 90 to 140, greatly improving accessibility, and replacing the stage and adding new lighting, storage, and rebuilding a fire pit. An outdoor discovery area consisting of a 20’ by 20’ deck on the pond near the amphitheater will be constructed for nature programming. A new accessible parking area and drop-off loop is being constructed near the nature center to provide easier access for patrons with a disability. A separate project will involve the replacement of a pedestrian bridge across the creek on the south trail. This is in an effort to protect the bridge from increasingly frequent high-water events through the creek. This work will begin in late March, and is expected to take about 60 days. Park patrons should expect trail closures and redirections, and relocation of some programs.

Paul McCobb - America’s Designer is the name of this exhibit, which opens April 4 and runs through Aug. 15. McCobb, who was active in the 1950s and 60s and died at age 52 in 1969, designed all kinds of household items from furniture, to electronics, to textiles, to air conditioners and heaters, to fine china, to kitchen cabinets, and much more. “No other museum to our knowledge has done a solo exhibit on Paul McCobb’s products and legacy,” said Museum Curator of Interpretation Andrew R. Gustafson. “I think this exhibit is going to be really popular with both Mid-Century Modern enthusiasts who know lots about this era, and also with folks who don’t know much about design.” Related program offerings will include History on Tap programs on April 9, May 14, and Aug. 13, and a Lunch & Learn on May 14 (all on page 41).
