Welcome Inside this issue, you’ll find hundreds of programs to keep you active this fall and early winter. Our catalog is organized generally by age-based sections with alphabetically-arranged topic-related subheadings. Special events are listed in the age-based sections they fall under. To the right, you’ll find a table of contents for the sections, as well as separate indexes for articles and other information. On our inside back cover, you’ll find a map of JCPRD parks and facilities. Additional information and details about most of the programs in this catalog are available on our website

About Our Cover The Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s second Natureplay Preschool (page 15) is among the many amenities of the new Meadowbrook Park and Clubhouse, which opened in June. These discovery-based learning programs for ages three through five are meant to increase awareness and appreciation of the natural world. Morning and afternoon sessions are offered with options for two to five days per week. For more about Meadowbrook Park and public reaction to it, see related story on page 8.

Go to www.JCPRD.com for more details on our programs and to register.

New Meadowbrook Park well-received by residents If you haven’t yet experienced Meadowbrook Park and Clubhouse in northeastern Johnson County, consider yourself invited to check out all this new park has to offer! Located primarily on the northern portion of the site of the former Meadowbrook Country Club at 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, the new park hosted more than 2,000 people for a grand opening event on June 22, but actually started offering programming at the site in early June. “We have received overwhelmingly positive comments about the park,” said JCPRD Executive Director Jill Geller. “So many of our parks and programs are considered jewels within Johnson County, and we can now add Meadowbrook Park and Clubhouse to that list.” “We’ve been so pleased with how many people have just dropped in to check out the building,” added Recreation Coordinator Kari Baesel, Workout at our outdoor fitness area

who is the facility manager for the park’s 10,000 square-foot clubhouse. “They’re so excited to have a facility and park in their neighborhood.” “‘This room is amazing!,’ ‘What a great concept!,’ and ‘This is where I want my child to go to preschool,’” are among the reactions Children’s Services Specialist Lisa Hughes has heard to the new Natureplay Preschool at Meadowbrook. JCPRD Deputy Director Jeff Stewart ticked off some of the park’s many popular amenities. “The Treetop Adventure destination playground has been extremely popular since opening,” he said. “It seems to always have a large number of children and families enjoying it. The 3.75-mile trail system is also heavily used throughout the day and there are many inquiries about the clubhouse, Grand Pavilion, and three picnic shelters - all which are available for rentals. Of course we already know on a snow covered Explore the Treeline Adventure Playground

day, Meadowbrook Hill is packed full of families enjoying some sledding. The park’s eight pickleball courts are very popular too, and we’re working on lighting for them.” The park also includes a separate play and picnic area called The Groves, located in a grove of Oak trees; three ponds of approximately three, two, and one-acre each, which have been stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish (state and JCPRD permits required for fishing); and an area containing low-impact outdoor fitness equipment. Programs at Meadowbrook are offered for all ages and can be found throughout this catalog. Development of the 83.2-acre park would not have been possible without the partnerships with the city of Prairie Village, and real estate company VanTrust.

Late fall opening anticipated for SMSD Aquatic Center When it opens later this year, the new Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center will be a state-of-the-art competitive aquatic facility located in the heart of Lenexa’s City Center. While owned by the school district, the new aquatic center will be operated by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District and officials are excited about operating the facility in partnership with the school district. “This facility will provide a venue for the competitive swim world, including swimmers with SMSD’s five high schools, and U.S.A. Swimming, as well as the members of the public who are interested in lap swimming, water polo, and swim lessons,” said JCPRD Aquatics Manager Marshall McKinney. The centerpiece of the 53,000-square-foot center will be a 50-meter competition pool with one large video board and two scoreboards, and two one-meter and two three-meter diving boards. “It’s an Olympic-size pool, but it can be converted to numerous different

setups,” McKinney said. “The pool is very versatile in its setups. You can set it up for a 25-yard short course, 25-meter short course, long course 50-meter, or water polo, to name a few. The center will also include seating for up to 1,500 competitors and spectators, a diving well, a 25-yard pool that will be used for training and non-competitive swimming, locker rooms, concession areas, and additional training facilities. The center will also be served by a connected two-story, 200-space parking garage to the west. “We will be able to host local, regional, and hopefully national meets,” McKinney said. “So it’s going to bring numerous competitive events in the world of swimming to our area.” Located at 17251 W. 87th St. between the westbound and eastbound lanes, the new center will be across the street from Lenexa City Hall and the recently-opened Lenexa branch

of the Johnson County Library. “We’re working with the city of Lenexa, as well as other area businesses, to make the venue somewhere where you can go to the farmers’ market, stop by and take swim lessons, and then enjoy lunch in the marketplace,” McKinney said. “To me, the aquatic center will only enhance that area.” As of press time for this catalog, no specific opening date had been set, but a late fall opening for the SMSD Aquatic Center was anticipated. That event will involve a ribbon cutting hosted by building contractor J.E. Dunn, the Shawnee Mission School District, and JCPRD. Check jcprd.com/SMSDaquaticcenter for information about the opening, as well as programming, hours of operation, and employment opportunities.

2019 marks four decades of JCPRD Hayrides For 40 years now, JCPRD has been providing opportunities to enjoy the crisp fall air with a scenic hayride, followed by an outdoor campfire experience. Since 1980, an estimated 133,000 people have taken part in more than 5,000 hayrides in Shawnee Mission Park, and, since 1992, in Heritage Park as well. “Our hayrides are unique because they are held in a park setting and they feature a campfire and refreshments of apple cider and marshmallows,” said Outdoor Education Manager Bill McGowan. “It’s a great fall activity for birthday parties, scouts, church groups, family reunions, and neighborhood events.” In addition to hayrides for organized groups, there are also two dates for individuals and smaller groups to enjoy similar Public Hayrides in Shawnee Mission Park, set this year on Sept. 29 and Nov. 3. Group hayrides at both park locations are offered by appointment from Sept. 21 to Nov. 24 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only. For more information, about JCPRD group and public hayrides, see page 11.
