National Gold Medal for Excellence Award Winner!

Welcome As winter finally yields to spring and a warmer and greener world, you can keep active with the hundreds of programs you’ll find in this catalog. In this issue you’ll find everything from the annual Great American Family Campout to beach and marina hours, to classes, trips, workshops, lunch and learns, and special events for your enjoyment. Keep in mind that additional information and details about most of our programs in this catalog are available on our website at JCPRD.com While this catalog contains some summer camp listings, many more can be found in our 2019 Camp Guide which came out in late January, and all of our summer camps can be found online. Our printed catalog is organized generally by age-based sections with alphabetically-arranged topic-related subheadings. A change we’ve made with this issue is that all special events are now listed in the age-based sections. To the right, you’ll find a table of contents for the sections, as well as separate indexes for articles and other information. On our inside back cover, you’ll find a map of JCPRD parks and facilities.

About Our Cover “Annie” will kick off the Theatre in the Park’s 50th season of musicals this summer outdoors in the theater complex in Shawnee Mission Park. With the lovable orphan and her dog Sandy, this show begins a full season of family-friendly shows. This will be the fifth time “Annie” has been produced on the TIP stage (others were in 1986, 1993, 2001, and 2010). Some other local favorites are also part of this season, including “The Music Man,” and “The Wizard of Oz,” as well as two shows which have never been produced by TIP before: “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” and Roald Dahl’s “Matilda.” We look forward to a historic and fun 50th season, and invite you to join us! For more about the theater’s history and the 2019 season, see the articles on pages 8 and 9.

50 seasons of Theatre in the Park Extraordinary community support for something creative and unique is a big part of the reason the Theatre in the Park has endured since 1970. The local community theater, which is also a showcase for Johnson County talent, celebrates its 50th season in 2019. “It was (and still is) an outlet for people with creative talents, some of who may not have chosen to use their performing and artistic talents in a career kind of way,” said Producing Artistic Director Tim Bair. “I think the ability to provide an artistic outlet for such a wide and diverse demographic is also part of it.” The idea of presenting live theater in a Johnson County park was initially developed in 1969, and the first production, “Mame,” was presented on a small wooden stage in Antioch Park in 1970. After just two seasons, the fledgling theater outgrew that space and realized a need for more restrooms, concessions, and parking. A temporary wooden stage was constructed in the Small Lakes Area of Shawnee Mission Park in time for performances in 1972 with a plan to eventually construct a permanent facility. With fundraising help from the Shawnee Mission Sertoma Club, construction of a permanent stage at TIP’s current location began on ten acres in 1979 and was dedicated on June 20, 1980. When the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center opened in mid-2017, it provided TIP with a new indoor venue called The Black Box Theatre, suitable for presenting theater productions year-round.

Bair conservatively estimates that since its start, the Theatre in the Park has entertained more than 1.5 million people. Over this time, TIP has presented 212 productions of 117 different shows, including both the indoor and outdoor venues. It seems fitting that three of TIP’s most popular productions are among this summer’s five musicals. These are: “The Music Man,” for which 2019 will be the eighth TIP production; “The Wizard of Oz,” which will make its sixth appearance on the local stage; and “Annie,” for which this will be the fifth production. Bair also estimates that since its start, 8,500 to 9,000 actors have taken part in TIP productions. “Many people who performed on our stage in their youth have gone on to professional theatrical careers,” he noted. “ There are a good number of people who have enjoyed Broadway, national, and international careers”

Help us celebrate this special milestone! Come enjoy a show (or five) this summer to help the Johnson County Park and Recreation District celebrate its 50th outdoor season of musicals at the Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park. “We have picked shows this season that appeal to family audiences across the board,” said Producing Artistic Director Tim Bair. “I hope that everyone who has ever visited TIP will join us this summer!” Outdoor summer productions at the TIP facility in Shawnee Mission Park will include: “Annie,” which is Rated G and on stage June 7 through 15; “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” which is Rated PG; and on stage June 21 through 29 “The Music Man,” Rated G, July 5 through 13; Roald Dahl’s “Matilda,” Rated PG, July 19 through 27; and “The Wizard of Oz,” Rated PG, Aug. 2 through 10. The 2019 indoor season begins April 19-May 5 with “Forever Plaid,” Rated PG, and also includes “Sweet Charity,” Rated PG, Oct. 11-27, and “Frozen Jr.,” Rated G, Dec. 6-15. Indoor shows take place in The Black Box Theatre inside the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center. Productions of TIP’s Summer Theatre Academy for youth will also take place indoors at The Black Box Theatre, and include: “Madagascar - A Musical Adventure Jr.,” which is Rated G, will take place June 15; “Once on This Island Jr.,” (an original adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid) Rated G, on June 29; and “Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.,” Rated G, on July 19 and 20.

Show times for all outdoor productions is 8:30 p.m. Performances last approximately two hours with a 20-minute intermission. The celebrate its 50th season, TIP will be having special curtain speeches on opening nights of “Forever Plaid” and “Annie” and some VIPs are invited to attend, including former longtime TIP Executive Producer Demmaree Carns who retired in 2000 after 27 years, and who will come on stage and say a few words. Giveaways are planned for most nights of outdoor shows as well.

For more information about the Theatre in the Park, see page 10 or go to theatreinthepark.org.

Although specific films have not yet been announced, officials anticipate the popular Movies in the Park program will also return in 2019. Through this program, patrons can see popular films on a 40foot screen on the TIP stage on selected summer nights when musical productions are not scheduled.

Temporary museum exhibit examines “The Wizard of Oz” Exploring the expanding universe of “The Wizard of Oz” is the goal of a new temporary exhibit at the Johnson County Museum opening June 1. “What started with one juvenile book has become a major book series, several major motion pictures, stage productions and Broadway Musicals, cartoons, and television series,” said Museum Director Mindi Love. “It is worldwide, it is multi-lingual, it is multi-media, and it is not just of interest to children.” Tracing the growth of the Oz phenomenon, exploring its global appeal, and illustrating its influence on popular culture are aims of this exhibit. The exhibit ties into the 80th anniversary of the 1939 MGM movie, 100th anniversary of L. Frank Baum’s death, and the Theatre in the Park’s production of the play as part of its 50th summer season. Hundreds of objects and images, most from the vaults of a local private collector, will be featured. Officials anticipate about 30,000 people will visit this family-friendly exhibit during its five-month run that ends Nov. 2.

Three programs introduce young players to baseball and softball This catalog includes three programs meant to introduce young players to the game of baseball. These are: Introduction to T-Ball (page 19), and Baseball/Softball Camp - T-Ball and Coach Pitch Levels 1 & 2 (page 29). “These programs are great stepping stones, and are highly encouraged for the first couple years of baseball and softball,” said Youth Sports Coordinator Stephanie Chase. “From the perspective of the kids, they feel like they are on a team, and they get used to going to practice, and playing in games.” Chase said these programs represent a unique hybrid between a clinic and a league. Utilizing an experienced staff, the program is very instructional while also providing a league-like environment for players. The cost is also very low and a ball glove is the only equipment players need to provide. These programs repeatedly get positive feedback, in part because they also involve an on-site program supervisor who answers questions, helps with drills, and gives parents a lot of attention and feedback.

JCPRD’s longest running triathlon marks 35 years To help celebrate the 35th running of the Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon (page 37), event organizers have added an Olympic Course, which is longer than the triathlon’s regular Long Course, and a Super Sprint Course, which is shorter than the event’s regular Short Course.

Instead of finisher medals, each athlete who crosses the finish line this year will receive special “Mission Accomplished” medals, which is a nod to both the Shawnee Mission Park location, and the accomplishment completing this kind of event represents. Since 1984 this event has introduced thousands of people to the sport of triathlon, launched the careers of dozens of Iron Man athletes, and hosted numerous professional athletes in this one of a kind venue. For information about this year’s event and all four course options, visit JCPRD.com/SMPtri.

New day trip includes river cruise, historic sites A new day trip being offered for the first time this summer will take participants about 120 miles north of Kansas City to discover the many historic attractions of Brownville, Neb. Other stops will include a chance to explore the Meriwether Lewis river dredge first launched in 1931 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the beautiful Carson House, which was built by Brownville’s founder; the Wheel Museum featuring vintage farming equipment, wagons, buggies, a Civil War canon, a printing press, commercial fishing equipment, and more; Dr. Spurgin’s old-time Dental Office; and the 1854 Didier Log Cabin. “This trip offers so much variety,” said 50 Plus Assistant Rachel Rendina. “We’re always looking for new and exciting things to offer for our day trips, and we had no idea Brownville has so much to offer!”
