National Gold Medal Award Winner for Excellence!

Welcome Inside this catalog, you’ll find hundreds of programs to keep you active this fall and early winter. We’ve got everything from the Second Annual Park Palooza to winter break camps, to classes, trips, and lots of special events planned for your enjoyment. Keep in mind that additional information and details about most of our programs are available on our updated and improved website at JCPRD.com. With the exception of the Special Events section, which has age-based subheadings, our catalog is generally organized by age-based sections with topic-related subheadings. To the right, you’ll find a table of contents for the sections, as well as separate indexes for articles and other information. On our inside back cover, you’ll find a map of JCPRD parks and facilities.

About Our Cover Fall hayrides are a long-time tradition with the Johnson County Park & Recreation District! There’s no better way to gather with friends and family to enjoy the crisp fall air as the leaves display the change from summer to autumn. Each year, we offer opportunities for Fall Group Hayrides from mid-September to mid-November at both Shawnee Mission and Heritage parks (page 12). Apple cider and a fire to roast marshmallows are part of these outings as well. There are also two dates for individuals and smaller groups to enjoy similar Public Hayrides in Shawnee Mission Park, set this year on Sept. 30 and Nov. 4 (page 12). Two of JCPRD’s major fall special events also offer chances for free hayrides. Shown here are hayrides offered during Park Palooza, which returns to The Theatre in the Park complex for a second year on Sept. 16 (page 11). Hayrides are also part of the Mildale Farm Fall Fest on Oct. 27 (page 11).

While it’s no longer in our printed catalog, our JCPRD U holistic wellness initiative is still available for most programs for ages three to 18. You’ll find information about which wellness dimension applies to each program as part of the online descriptions for the applicable programs.

Museum’s temporary exhibit takes another look at the 1920s Showing visitors that the reality about the 1920s is much more complicated and tumultuous than popular ideas would indicate is one objective for a new temporary exhibit at the Johnson County Museum. Called The Turbulent Twenties, the exhibit coordinates with the 2018 centennial of the ending of World War I, and will run from Aug. 25 through May 11. “A new modern era begins in the United States after the war, and the exhibit highlights those changes in the social, cultural, political, and economic lives of Americans,” said Museum Director Mindi Love. “PostWorld War I America is often presented as a triumphant decade for the country: the U.S. was victorious in the war, technology and mass production led to the appearance of societal and economic prosperity, and popular culture led to the decade’s nickname “The Roaring Twenties.” Yet below the veil of American victory and prosperity, the long 1920s were a decade of tumult and fractured American society. The decade also saw the rise of nativist movements including a resurgence of the Klu Klux Klan, voting rights for women, and national prohibition. The 1918 flu pandemic, often referred to as the Spanish Flu, also had a lasting impact.” The Turbulent Twenties exhibit will fill a 1,600 square foot gallery space with more than 100 images and over 50 objects, plus music, and video. The museum collaborated with the National World War I Museum, Kansas State Historical Society, Kansas City Museum, and the Indiana State Museum to secure objects. Images have been secured from over twenty institutions.

8

The exhibit will provide visitors with a national view of the issues, while also highlighting how the local region responded. Love said other objectives for the exhibit are: exploring connections between Johnson County, the state of Kansas, and the larger national history of the decade; and drawing connections between the 1920s and our current society and culture. Officials project that over the exhibit’s eight-plus month run, more than 50,000 people will visit. Several tie-in programs and events are being planned, including a Lunch and Learn about the 1918 flu pandemic on Sept. 12 titled The Flu: Worse than the Black Death. See page 38 for more information. The exhibit is included with regular museum admission rates of $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children. For more information about the museum or this exhibit, go to jcprd. com/museum.

Inclusive Playgrounds meant to be fun and accessible for all Making sure they’re fun for everyone, is one of the top goals for JCPRD’s two new inclusive playgrounds. “Hopefully, lots of families will come there, whether they have special needs children or not; they’re just going to come because they’re really fun playgrounds,” said Planning and Development Manager Cliff Middleton. “Of course, having something that accommodates kids with special needs will be popular, too.”

Both projects also include a nearby restroom building with four extra large stalls meant to provide extra space for someone to be able to assist youth with special needs. The Stilwell project also includes a picnic shelter. Unique elements of the playgrounds include a recessed merry go round which can accommodate a wheelchair at the Stilwell site, and piece of play equipment called a Sway Fun Glider at the Shawnee Mission Park site which can also accommodate a wheelchair.

As of press time, officials anticipated an inclusive playground at the Stilwell Community Park would have a late July or early August opening, while construction on an inclusive playground in the north Walnut Grove area of Shawnee Mission Park was just getting under way, with a tentative October opening expected. Sometimes also called universal playgrounds, inclusive playgrounds are meant to enable all children to play together without physical or social barriers. “There are some common elements between the two (JCPRD inclusive playgrounds), but we did try to make them different enough that you might want to take your family to one on one weekend, and you might want to go to the other the next weekend,” Middleton said. Both playgrounds will feature: sloped areas with climbing elements; areas with musical instruments; swings of some kind; shade structures with a mister element, double-wide slides, and rolling slide tables that participants can pull themselves along.

The inclusive playground projects were added to the 2018 capital improvements budget after the Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners expressed interest in adding inclusive playgrounds into the JCPRD park system. Once the funding was in place, a steering committee was formed and included representatives of the Stilwell Community Organization, local disability advocacy groups, as well as JCPRD board members Nancy Wallerstein and Paul Snider. Landscape architecture, planning, and design firm Verio was hired for the project, and two well-attended public comment sessions were conducted. Wilcott Construction of Olathe was the successful bidder for the project.

You’re invited to Park Palooza on Sept. 16 Now back for a second year, Park Palooza is a great way to spend a mid-September Sunday afternoon. This free event promises entertainment, information, and fun for the whole family. First presented in 2017, Park Palooza was envisioned as a way of showing appreciation for the community’s long-time support of JCPRD. This family-friendly celebration includes live music, interactive children’s performers, activities for all ages, hayrides, food trucks, and family-priced concessions. Based on public input, a few changes to the event have been made for 2018. This year, the booths representing different JCPRD programs and county departments will be concentrated around the theater bowl, so participants can be closer to all the activities. Most of the performers for kids, including Mr. Stinky Feet, will be back for 2018, but there will be only one act on the main stage this year. The singers, horns, and rhythm section which comprise Atlantic Express start a twohour concert of soul, funk, and R&B at 4 p.m. Visit JCPRD.com/ parkpalooza for details.
