2018 Athlete Guide (Updated)

Johnson County Park & Recreation District is excited to welcome you to the 2018 JCPRD U Kids Triathlon in Partnership with Charlie’s House Presented by HCA! Welcome to one of the fastest growing youth sports in the country! This youth triathlon is for children ages 14 and under. Athletes will be competing in three race categories: Intermediate: ages 11-14, Junior: ages 6-10 and Tots: ages 5 and under. There are separate courses and distances for the three categories. All athletes will be scored in the results according to their age as of December 31, 2018.

This triathlon welcomes youth of all experience levels! Everyone will participate in this fun and exciting course inside beautiful Kill Creek Park.

The park is closed to ensure the safety of each child. There will be no outside traffic on the bike or run courses throughout the duration of the event.

This event is the Championship Race for the Midwest Youth Triathlon Series.

It will host youth that have also participated in the following events: The JCC Youth Triathlon, the TRiKC Longview Jr. Triathlon and the Ottawa Iron Kids Triathlon. Thank you for your participation in the JCPRD U Kids Triathlon in Partnership with Charlie’s House Presented by HCA!

Charlie’s House is named in memory of Charlie Horn whose life tragically ended at the age of two when a dresser fell on him in his home.

The mission of Charlie’s House is to prevent injuries to children in and around the home. Check out their website at charlieshouse.org for more information on keeping your home safe!

Race Course orientation and Q&A with the Race Director inside the beach house. First time athletes are encouraged to attend!

Transition Area & park roads close, all remaining vehicles will park outside of Kill Creek Park (see “Parking� section for more details)

Awards Ceremony begins & park roads reopen (Park roads will be closed and NO vehicles will be permitted to leave until the last athlete has crossed the finish line.)

Gates to Kill Creek Park will open at 6:00am on Saturday, August 25th.

There will be several volunteers stationed throughout the park to direct you to a designated lot. Please assist us by following the directions of the volunteers to ensure everyone has a parking spot.

Below is a map that will show the parking lots you may be asked to park your vehicle in. All handicap parking will be in the lot labeled “1�.

White arrows indicate what route you may be asked to use by the volunteers to get to your designated parking spot. Yellow arrows show how to get to transition from each parking lot.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 25TH - 6:00-8:30am PACKET CONTENTS Helmet Sticker This adhesive sticker will be placed on the front center of the bike helmet.

Bike Tag This adhesive sticker will be placed under the bike seat (facing out) around the cylinder bar of the bike seat.

Two Blue Wristbands Please see the next page for more details on this.

Race Bib This will be worn during the bicycling and running portions of the race. Athletes need to wear this on the front of their shirt during these parts of the race. They can either use safety pins (provided) or wear a race belt.

Swim Cap (not pictured) Athletes will be required to wear a pre-designated swim cap during the swim portion of the race. The swim cap color will denote the race category. See the Heat Sheet for more details.

Timing Chip (not pictured) Athletes will be required to wear a timing band around their left ankle for the entire race.

This will be in a white envelope inside the race packet. Athletes in the Tots Tri will not have a timing chip.

Be sure to wear this as no chip = no time.

Athlete pick-up/check out safety procedure For the safety of all athletes, parents/guardians will be REQUIRED to check their athlete out at the finish line. The athlete race packet will contain 2 wristbands with the same number: one for the athlete and one for the parent/ guardian. The parent/guardian must be wearing the matching wristband in order to pick-up the athlete once they have completed the race. Athletes will not be allowed to leave the finish line without a parent/guardian with the corresponding wristband to check them out from the race management team.

These times are estimated start times. Please be sure to have your child ready to swim at least 10 minutes before their heat is scheduled to begin.

After completing your race, stick around to cheer on the other athletes and enjoy some great post-race food!

Post Race Food: Athletes can enjoy post-race food including chocolate milk, fresh organic fruit from Natural Grocers, and Cabot cheese. Participants will also receive a complimentary shaved ice from Kona Ice after completing the race. ** Additional Kona Ice refreshments may be purchased with cash or card

Photos on the Podium: podiums will be set up on the beach and will be available to take photos on prior to and following the awards ceremony.

Fun Activities for the Kids: stop by all of our vendor booths to check out all they have to offer! FREE face painting, make a CHEER card for your athlete and get a FREE bike helmet from Safe Kids Johnson County!
